00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're pulling back that extra layer of skin to see what's
00:11under the surface I wish I'd used a different analogy.
00:15The Silent Hill 2 remake is filled with fantastic easter eggs that pay tribute to other games
00:19and most importantly the original game, which new players would have definitely missed.
00:24Let's educate them.
00:25Spoilers ahead.
00:26Before we continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:31the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:34Jax Inn Safe Code
00:41After leaving Rosewater Park with Maria and arriving at Jax Inn, players must unlock the
00:46safe in the main office to obtain a key with a chain-linked gate.
00:50The safe's code is revealed to be the infamous 0451, a number that has appeared in numerous
00:56games including Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Bioshock Infinite and Prey.
01:01This tradition dates back to System Shock, where the code was first used.
01:04It was also the security door code for Looking Glass Studios, the creators of System Shock.
01:09As the first door code puzzle in video game history, 0451 has since been reused in many
01:15games as both a nod to gaming history and a tribute to Looking Glass Studios.
01:19I'm hesitant to say this on a Mojo platform, but I actually used this pin for some very
01:24important things in my life, and now I gotta go change the pin before one of you works
01:27out what it's for.
01:34Achievements
01:42Some hidden details in Silent Hill 2 come in the form of achievements, or trophies depending
01:47on where you play the game.
01:49The easiest one to unlock is No Turning Back Now.
01:52If you try to leave Silent Hill by heading back up the road from the parking structure,
01:56an invisible wall stops you and you'll earn this achievement, which plays out much the
02:00same as the original.
02:01Another amusing easter egg is the It's Bread achievement, which you get by interacting
02:05with trays of moldy bread in the Lakeview Hotel kitchen.
02:08This is a playful nod to Silent Hill 3, where Heather Mason encounters a similarly famous
02:12caption at Helen's Bakery.
02:14We love a game that can poke fun at itself, and Silent Hill does it better than most.
02:20Original Map
02:23In Silent Hill 2, your most useful tool is not your gun, it's not your melee weapon,
02:27it's your map, which the player will undoubtedly pull out more than any other item in their
02:32inventory.
02:33But players who have never experienced the original wouldn't know that the importance
02:37of the map is nothing new.
02:39When players enter the Woodside Apartments, they can spot the iconic, original Silent
02:43Hill 2 map in the courtyard, a nostalgic nod for veteran fans who likely memorised the
02:48layout during multiple playthroughs while waiting for the remake.
02:52A more sinister version of the classic map can also be found in Nilly's Bar in the
02:56Otherworld version of Western South Vale.
02:59This version is bloodstained and tattered, mirroring the darker, more twisted environment
03:03it belongs to.
03:05The Bodies
03:08A particularly eerie detail from the original Silent Hill 2 makes a return in the remake,
03:13unfortunately with far better graphics.
03:15Whenever you encounter a dead body in Silent Hill 2 Remake, take a closer look.
03:20With the exception of the corpse found with Eddie in the Toluca Prison Canteen, every
03:24dead person you come across either resembles James, or could easily just be him.
03:29While some bodies are too obscured with blood, mud or acid puke to make this immediately
03:34clear, many are wearing the same army jacket as James, adding to the unsettling atmosphere.
03:40If I saw a dead me, I can't tell you how quickly I'd get back in the car.
03:46Douglas Cartland's Hat
03:51Who'd have thought we'd get so many Silent Hill 3 easter eggs in the Silent Hill 2 Remake.
03:56Jack's Inn in Silent Hill 2 is packed with hidden references, and one of the most clever
04:01can be found in Room 106.
04:03There you'll see a hat hanging on a chair, with a colour, design and patterned band that
04:08unmistakably belongs to Douglas Cartland, the private investigator who accompanies Heather
04:13Mason in the third entry.
04:14The hats present in Room 106 is no coincidence.
04:18This is the same room where Douglas and Heather stay during the events of Silent Hill 3, adding
04:22a thoughtful layer of detail for fans, but also making the timeline even more frustrating.
04:28Secret Chainsaw Animation
04:37After unlocking the chainsaw in New Game Plus mode, players can use it for the remainder
04:41of the game.
04:42Oh yes, there's a chainsaw by the way.
04:45As the strongest melee weapon, it's incredibly useful for cutting through enemies with ease.
04:49However, if you equip the chainsaw and let James stand idle for a few minutes, he'll
04:54perform a special animation, lifting it above his head and screaming like a madman.
04:59This is a callback to the original Silent Hill 2, where the same animation originally
05:03appeared.
05:04It was a nod to Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise and his iconic
05:07screams while chasing his victims.
05:09So in the remake, it's technically an easter egg to an easter egg.
05:12Another egg-ception.
05:15Pizza Line
05:31The Silent Hill 2 remake made several changes to gameplay that made the tone of the game
05:35feel less cheesy.
05:37This included a rework of the comical interaction between James and Eddie at Pete's Bowlerama.
05:42In the original, James arrives at the bowling alley with Maria and finds Eddie eating pizza,
05:46prompting the now iconic line, this town is full of monsters, how can you sit there and
05:50eat pizza?
05:51The game's community found the scene hilarious and it became a popular meme.
05:56Although the remake alters this moment to maintain a more serious tone, it's still referenced.
06:00If players visit Bowlerama before heading through Jack's Inn, James notices a pizza
06:04box on the table and delivers a rephrased version of the line.
06:19Classic Outfits
06:20The Silent Hill 2 remake gave its characters a major graphical overhaul, including Maria
06:25who now sports a fancy new outfit.
06:27However, if you visit room 108 in Jack's Inn, you can find Maria's classic dress hanging
06:32in the closet.
06:33Unlocking the door and letting Maria in triggers a special interaction where she asks James
06:38if he thinks the outfit would look good on her.
06:41But don't think that's all the nods to classic outfits.
06:44If you explore the remake's version of Heaven's Night, you'll find a nurse costume in one
06:47of the booths by the stage.
06:49This serves as a playful bit of foreshadowing for the hospital level and bears a resemblance
06:53to the nurse costume unlockable for Eileen in Silent Hill 4.
06:57So many references.
06:59Comic Sans Sign
07:01In the Silent Hill HD collection, there was controversy over many of the changes, the
07:05most egregious of which was when the Silent Hill Ranch sign was changed to Comic Sans,
07:10a choice that sparked outrage among fans and critics for making the sign look comical.
07:15Also, this was well after Comic Sans became somewhat of a meme.
07:18With the release of the Silent Hill 2 remake, fans were eager to see the updated version
07:23of the sign.
07:24To their relief, the developers restored the original font, pleasing the community.
07:27However, some players using a free camera mod discovered that the infamous Comic Sans
07:32version of the sign is still in the game, hidden out of sight in the Silent Hill Ranch's
07:36barn, as a subtle nod to past mistakes.
07:54Mary's Body
07:57Could you really be in this town?
08:02This one is a big spoiler for those who never completed the original Silent Hill 2, so if
08:06you haven't, stop watching now.
08:08One of the long-standing debates from Silent Hill 2 revolves around whether James' wife
08:12Mary is in the trunk of his car or lying in the backseat since he did kill her.
08:17In 2012, Masahiro Ito, the former art director and creature designer for Team Silent tweeted
08:22Mary's body is on the backseat of James' car, not in the trunk if I remember correctly.
08:28Blooper Team has officially settled the debate in the remake by confirming that Mary's body
08:32is indeed in the backseat, covered by a blanket.
08:35If players use a free camera mod to look through the car window, they can find this significant
08:41detail which the developers deliberately included to add some clarity to this mystery.
