A woman bought her grandmother's "hoarder home" for $20k to "keep it in the family" - and spent eight months transforming it to raise her children there.

Brandy Hagewood, 31, purchased her grandmother Marian's three-bedroom home in Angola, Indiana, US, in December 2022 after she went into a care home.

In Indiana, when a state resident goes into a care home their home is taken over by the state and sold when they pass away.

Brandy grew up in the home and wanted the property to stay in the family so she bought it off the state for just $20k.

Towards the end of her grandma's life, Brandy says her she started hoarding but she wasn't prepared for how many items were stashed in the house - including gifts, newspapers, antiques and old mementoes.

Brandy has spent eight months clearing out the property - getting rid of hundreds of trash bags full of furniture, newspapers, clothes and old gifts but still has a way to go before they move in.

00:00Come with me inside the hoarder house I bought for my grandma to save it from being taken
00:21by the state.
00:22Now the house did not always look like this.
00:26Nan was a shopaholic.
00:28After my grandfather passed away in 2010, it got a lot worse.
00:33She had to have her feet and then her legs amputated, I believe it started in 2020.
00:38It's hard coming in here because I miss her so much.
00:42Our goal is to eventually demolish this and build a new house on the property.
00:47To be really careful walking off of this porch, it is rotted, you have to step on the seams.
00:59First things first, we had to move this very heavy electric fireplace away from the door.
01:03After that, we kind of just formed a little assembly line and started tossing the trash
01:07out the door.
01:09After that, I wanted to clear out a space against this wall so that way we could put
01:16stuff here that was going to get sold, donated or kept.
01:18I'm so happy that I had a team full of my family here to help me get this all done today.
01:24After we got the big couches out, I figured we better go ahead and get this mattress and
01:28box spring.
01:29Thank God we found a shovel in the backyard and it made it 100 times easier just to scoop
01:33it into the trash.
01:34It was definitely very emotional seeing the room get emptied, it's a mix of happiness
01:39and sadness all at the same time.
01:41This is what the house looked like after we finished with day one.
01:54This is how full the dumpster was after the first day.
