00:00I'm traveling to Toro Camp in the Makalali Private Game Reserve to learn more about how

00:07people are protecting these gentle giants.

00:11I'm here at Toro Camp and I'm going to be meeting my friend Dr. Julian Fennessy.

00:26He is one of the leaders and directors of Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

00:31Hi Mr. Julian.

00:32Hi Brooke.

00:33How's it going, mate?

00:34Fine, thanks.

00:35Long time no see.

00:36Yeah, it's been a while.

00:37How's it going?

00:38Fine, thanks.

00:39Cool.

00:40So do you know what we're up to?

00:41A giraffe?

00:42We're going to go do some cool giraffe things.

00:45That's going to be so awesome.

00:46So we've got this giraffe skull here, Brooke, and we can see how big they are.

00:51Look at the size of that head compared to yours.

00:54It's so heavy.

00:56Look how huge this giraffe skull is.

00:59It's almost as big as my body.

01:01Almost.

01:02Look how big these horns are.

01:04Actually, while they look like horns, they're not.

01:06They're called ossicones.

01:07So when these giraffes are born, these ossicones are flat.

01:11And after a week or so, they start to pop up.

01:14That's amazing.

01:15Super cool, hey?

01:16That's so cool.

01:17What's happened to his front teeth?

01:19Have they all fallen out?

01:21No, giraffe are a ruminant, so as a result, they don't have any front teeth.

01:25What?

01:26So if you pick it up, it's heavy.

01:29So the giraffe grabs the leaves with its tongue, chops it off with the bottom teeth, as it has no top teeth,

01:35and then it mixes it more here before it goes down into its stomach.

01:38That's amazing.

01:40And we found out recently that there's four different types of giraffe in Africa.

01:45Wow.

01:46So if we want to save them, we need to know how many there are,

01:49where are they, and we've got some cool, super little toys.

01:54Mr Julian, what are these?

01:55These are GPS satellite tags for giraffe.

01:58They've never been used on any animal before in the wild.

02:01Wow.

02:02So what we're going to try to put it on is the ear, like a cattle tag,

02:06and we're going to give it a try on the tail.

02:09And it's going to tell us where these giraffes are moving, what are they doing.

02:13Guys, I've learnt a whole lot about this giraffe skull.

02:16We can tell that it's a bull because these ossicones are huge.

02:20Did you know that ossicones are different to horns?

02:23Animals with ossicones are born with them, and they have skin on the outside.

02:28And I've just learnt that they're ruminant.

02:31That means that they have no front teeth at the top.

02:34And that also means that they have four stomachs, just like a cow.

02:38Check, this is where his nose is.

02:40That's how he smells.

02:42And guys, look how big this big eye is.
