00:00A new facet of the war in Ukraine has been revealed in a recent report by the UN Population
00:05Fund. Before the war, Ukraine had one of the lowest birth rates in Europe and has seen
00:11many young people leave in search of more opportunities abroad. But the country has
00:16seen a drastic drop in population since the outbreak of war in 2022. At the time the Ukrainian
00:22population stood at 43 million. It has now dropped by 8 million people. The report puts
00:29it down to a combination of different factors.
00:32But with Russia's full-scale invasion that started in 2022, the situation got significantly
00:39worse. The birth rate plummeted and is currently at around one child per woman, which is one
00:45of the lowest in the world. At the same time, we have millions of people who have been displaced.
00:51We know that we have internally displaced people and we have 6.7 million that are externally
00:56refugees.
00:58Where the externally displaced tend to be women and children, an increase in male mortality
01:03is also at the heart of the problem.
01:06In addition to that, you have the casualties. As you know, it's difficult to have exact
01:11numbers of this, but the estimate range around several tens of thousands of casualties, which
01:18of course add to the equation.
01:21Ukraine's demographic crisis will have to be addressed if the country hopes to one day
01:25rebuild after years of war.
