00:00When it comes to money, Britain is a divided nation.
00:05The gap between rich and poor has grown by a third in the last decade
00:10and continues to widen.
00:12But how much difference does money make?
00:15Two families from opposite sides of the wealth gap
00:18are about to find out.
00:20Natalie is mum to two-year-old daughter Ava.
00:24I don't have a lot of money,
00:26so my budget monthly is very, very tight.
00:29To provide more for Ava,
00:31Natalie wants to break into the beauty business.
00:34This genuinely is my dream career.
00:38The Sings run a thriving cosmetics clinic
00:41that's taken a close partnership to build up.
00:44I always thought, I don't want to work with my husband,
00:47but in the end, that's exactly what I'm doing.
00:50For one week...
00:52THEY GASP
00:53..they're swapping homes...
00:54Why are you crying? It's just so nice, innit?
00:56..budgets...
00:57Shall we get it all out, Amrit?
00:59I've never ever seen this much money in cash or in a bank account.
01:02Ever. ..and lives.
01:04What do you think?
01:05..to discover if money really does buy happiness.
01:09We're £66 overspent. We've only got 20 quid.
01:18In a quiet suburb of Middlesbrough,
01:20a million-pound house is home to Dr Rajpal Singh and his wife, Kiran.
01:25We have six bedrooms and... Seven.
01:28We've gone from six to seven cos it was a walking wall.
01:31I know. How many bathrooms?
01:33The house has been expensively redesigned just to suit their tastes.
01:37One of the biggest things that I really wanted to incorporate
01:41was the bench that we have here.
01:43So the curved bench was specially designed for us.
01:47There's lots of space for them and their children,
01:50three girls and a baby boy.
01:53Rajpal is founder of the upmarket DRS clinic
01:57offering high-tech facials and non-surgical treatments
02:01like facelifts, nose reshaping and collagen stimulation.
02:05Sharp scrunch.
02:07He's worked hard since qualifying as a GP.
02:10When doing aesthetic procedures, there's no room for mistakes.
02:14So people come to us because they trust us with their face.
02:17I thrive on high pressure... Yes. ..generally,
02:21because I do a lot of high-pressure situations,
02:24so I do thrive on that.
02:26The key to Rajpal's success is his working relationship with Kiran,
02:30who's the clinic's administrator.
02:32Most of the time I'm listening to Rajpal.
02:35Rajpal does all the talking.
02:38But, yes, it's been an amazing journey to grow the business together.
02:42Wow. Lovely.
02:44But wealth hasn't come easy.
02:47Both came from migrant families experiencing a good deal of racism.
02:52Even now, it's not easy to talk about.
02:55Our parents had come from India. We didn't have the nice things.
02:59And that would mean that we'd be picked on at school.
03:02We were taught by our parents to stand up for ourselves,
03:05to believe in ourselves.
03:07I had a very similar background to Rajpal and we had a lot of racism.
03:11My parents owned a corner shop
03:13to the point where we were attacked, even in the shop.
03:17Parents and the police were always involved.
03:20It was very much a common scene.
03:22Going through what we went through, it definitely made us stronger.
03:27When you reflect and you have children,
03:30you kind of think, gosh, if they had to go through that,
03:33it's not very nice.
03:36For the week of the swap,
03:38they'll be taking twins Anisha and Amara and their sister Amrin
03:42while baby Zorava stays with family.
03:45The twins are confident they have what it takes
03:48to thrive in the face of adversity.
03:50They already have their own business.
03:53The product that we sell are jeans.
03:55So these are some of the pairs.
03:58We put stars on them and then they all go on different types of jeans
04:02that we design and we create ourselves and we really enjoy doing that.
04:06We work well together.
04:08Amara's good at marketing, designing
04:10and then I'm good at selling.
04:12But Kieran wants the girls to learn from their week without wealth.
04:16We're hoping that the children will really have an understanding
04:19of the environment that we grew up in.
04:22You pop your stuff on that side and you should pop her stuff on this side.
04:26Hopefully they'll understand how privileged they are
04:30and really value what we do have.
04:34Less than an hour's drive away in County Durham,
04:38near the town of Gateshead,
04:40is the home of single mum Natalie and two-year-old Ava.
04:45Ava is genuinely the best thing that's ever, ever happened to me.
04:49I couldn't imagine life without Ava.
04:52Just like Ava, Natalie was raised by a single mum with little money,
04:57but she learned to get by.
04:59We didn't have much when I was growing up.
05:02My mum didn't have the best job.
05:05Our family kind of just stuck together and helped each other.
05:08So we didn't have a lot, but we had everything we needed together.
05:16Home is a two-bedroom rental.
05:18After all the bills are paid, they have just £60 to live on,
05:22most of which goes on food.
05:25There has been times where I have literally had nothing
05:28and I haven't been able to cover priority bills.
05:32Natalie has a big plan to get out of poverty.
05:35As well as working part-time in a petrol station,
05:38she's also trying to build her own nail business,
05:41but it's far from easy.
05:43I took out a business start-up loan to get the courses that I needed
05:48and some of the products that I needed to start up.
05:51It's so expensive.
05:53In addition to the expense of setting up,
05:56Natalie feels one other thing is holding her back.
05:59I think I do lack in confidence in the beauty business
06:04because there are so many other people around me
06:07who already have built up a big client base,
06:11but I would love to grow my confidence
06:14and have the same size client base as everyone else.
06:18Best friend Callum will be joining Natalie and Ava on the swap.
06:22He's seen her struggles with confidence and direction.
06:26She just needs someone to sort of give her the push
06:30to say, you're doing really well, essentially keep it up,
06:34yeah, look how well you've done so far, look how far you've got.
06:37Wow!
06:39This week could be the inspiration Natalie's been waiting for,
06:43to create a thriving business
06:45and a new life for herself and Ava.
06:48By doing this, I would really love to see
06:52how the other family have got to where they are now.
06:56Do you want to try?
06:58But Natalie's also aware she may not be the only one who needs educating.
07:03I would love for a family who do have more money
07:07to be able to see just how hard it can be
07:10being a young mum with a lot on, on a very tight budget.
07:14Look at your face!
07:16Look back!
07:18I have no idea what to expect out of the other family's house.
07:22I am hoping that it's going to be just as homely as it is in my house.
07:26The reds are gone.
07:28Oh, well, what are you going to do now?
07:30Let's get some more.
07:32It's day one and anticipation for the swap is building.
07:37One bag done, four to go.
07:44Despite a chilly start to the day, everyone is keen to get on the road.
07:49It's a quick ride, but while their properties are only 40 minutes away,
07:53in reality, they're worlds apart.
07:56I'm excited. Yeah.
07:58I'm very excited, but I'm nervous.
08:01Ready? One, two, three.
08:03Oh, my goodness.
08:05It's huge!
08:08Are you excited? This is home for the next week.
08:11Oh, my God, it is massive!
08:14It's really nice.
08:16Time for them all to work out who their mystery hosts are.
08:20Right, guys.
08:21So we can see mum and her little girl.
08:24Looks like quite a young child, doesn't it?
08:26That's her six days old.
08:28What a beautiful, beautiful picture.
08:31Hi, welcome to our home.
08:33Hi, welcome to our home.
08:35We hope you have a lovely time.
08:37Can't wait to meet you, Natalie and Ava.
08:40What a place, that's beautiful.
08:42Oh, my goodness gracious me.
08:45Wow!
08:47Oh, my God!
08:50That's unreal.
08:52Gobsmacked.
08:54And look, they've got a Wendy house like you!
08:56That's a beautiful picture of Natalie and Ava.
09:00Natalie looks really young as well.
09:02Oh, they've got four kids.
09:04Mum, Dad, baby and then three girls.
09:07Yeah.
09:08Rashbal.
09:09Anisha.
09:10Kiran.
09:11Amara.
09:12Amran.
09:13So, girls, what do we have here?
09:15It looks like some beauty things.
09:18She might be a beautician, maybe.
09:20What is in there?
09:21What's in there?
09:22They've got a whole giant playroom!
09:25It's bigger than my living room and kitchen put together.
09:29This looks like the little girl's room.
09:32Aw, she loves bunnies like you as well, Amran.
09:34There's a bunny picture up there.
09:36That's cute.
09:37It looks like Natalie is training,
09:40or has trained in beauty as well.
09:43That's just relatively recently as well.
09:46Ooh, clinical medicine.
09:48Ooh, he's a doctor.
09:50That's cute.
09:51The girls start realising how different life will be.
09:55There's only two bedrooms.
09:57I'll sleep on the block bed.
10:01Oh!
10:02While Natalie is getting a taste of just how privileged
10:05the Singles are, and spies a note they've written to their parents.
10:10It says, to my amazing dad,
10:12because of all of your hard work and dedication,
10:15we've managed to get this far.
10:17I really appreciate everything you do and your commitment.
10:21SHE SNIFFLES
10:23It's such a lovely house, but why are you crying?
10:26Cos it's nice.
10:30They've got everything.
10:31Like, they obviously give their kids everything.
10:36I want to be able to give her a lot and I can't.
10:40The Sings are already looking for ways they can help out.
10:44You know, I can see that.
10:45I can see the front of the shed's been painted,
10:47the side needs to be done.
10:49I can see a little bit of tidying up as well.
10:55The big moment has arrived.
10:57This is too much.
10:58How much will they have to live on?
11:00I've not seen this before.
11:02I've not seen this before.
11:04I've not seen this before.
11:06How much will they have to live on?
11:09I've not seen this much money in my life.
11:11I don't think I've ever seen or touched this much money in my life.
11:1440, 50, 60...
11:19..five...
11:201,000.
11:221.5.
11:23This would pay off nearly all of my debt.
11:29£67.20.
11:32Well done. Well done.
11:33It's crazy to think that we could spend that much in one day
11:36and that's their weekly budget.
11:38That's correct.
11:39So we have to be quite careful about what we're spending.
11:41We do, yes, definitely.
11:44Each family has left an activity board for the week.
11:47Visit Andy and Nan.
11:49Food shop.
11:50Regan.
11:51Family fun.
11:52Clinic.
11:54You all right?
11:55Shopping spree.
11:56Shopping spree.
11:57Yes.
11:58And look, nail it.
11:59So what do you think that's going to be about?
12:01I think maybe her nail business.
12:03Yeah, she could have her own business doing nails.
12:06Temple.
12:07I think the temple is going to be interesting.
12:10And we're going to be visiting Andy and Nan as well.
12:13The body mechanics one.
12:15I don't even know what I think that is.
12:17They'll also record a video diary.
12:21A camera's been set up where privacy is guaranteed.
12:25I don't think I've ever been in a house this big before, to be honest.
12:29I think there was a tiny little bit of shame in there
12:32where I thought, I haven't given over this yet.
12:38A budget of £67.20 was a bit of a shock
12:42because for five people, you know, that's going to be challenging.
12:47It became very apparent that we are really going to struggle.
12:52Coming up, Natalie's confidence is put to the test.
12:57Do you think you could have a go at doing it yourself?
13:00And Rashpal feels the financial squeeze.
13:04We're £0.66 overspent. We've only got £20.
13:21Single mum Natalie, for the first time in her life,
13:24is sizing up a mountain of cash.
13:27This would pay off nearly all of my debt.
13:30While Dr Rashpal is facing the cost of living.
13:34A budget of £67.20, you know, that's going to be challenging.
13:41It's day two.
13:43In Middlesbrough, Kieran's parents have dropped by
13:46to meet the new occupants of their daughter's home.
13:51I'd love to know more about your family and Kieran and Rashpal.
13:54We live in a lovely house now, but we started off in a council house.
13:57Didn't have much at all.
14:07That's what we used to work at.
14:09Just like Rashpal and his siblings,
14:11Kieran and her sisters worked in the family shop.
14:16It seems harsh dragging the kids into the business
14:19and making them work when they were still young.
14:22But it gave them that work ethic.
14:24And they were never forced into anything.
14:26Initially, we did get a lot of abuse, racially.
14:31It wasn't nice for us.
14:33But we even wanted to move the kids out of the school.
14:36It was that bad.
14:37I mean, Kieran gets upset when we talk about it.
14:39The other two do as well.
14:41Yeah.
14:42Because they don't want it to happen again.
14:44I've never experienced that kind of abuse.
14:47They went through that and they still thought,
14:49no, I'm going to go to school, I'm going to do well in school,
14:52I'm going to go home and help in the business.
14:54It's just really inspiring.
14:56If you're determined and, you know, you want to succeed in life...
15:00Yeah.
15:01..it shouldn't be much that will stop you back.
15:05In Gateshead, Kieran has made a shocking discovery.
15:09Natalie has a business loan, furniture and laptop to pay off.
15:13The payments are crippling her.
15:16I mean, there's just shy of £1,300 there,
15:19£800 on that one...
15:22..and £700 there.
15:24Wow.
15:25I mean, there's monthly finance debt of about £120 a month.
15:31Everything's on finance, isn't it?
15:33I've got a laptop as well, so...
15:35Yeah.
15:36And look at the interest rate.
15:38I'm really struggling to see how she is going to achieve her goals
15:43because we understand what she's going through
15:45and we've lived some of it.
15:47I think we really grasp a good understanding of her difficulties
15:51and, therefore, by putting our heads together,
15:55which is how me and Rashpal always work,
15:58hopefully we can come to some solution
16:00and see how we can really help and support Natalie to achieve her goals.
16:04She needs cash flow, she needs some income
16:07to be able to service and clear these debts
16:10because the interest rate is just...
16:12It's mad.
16:16To find out more, Rashpal and Kieran are off to the local park
16:21for a meeting with Natalie's auntie Vicky and her nan, Paula.
16:26Tell us a bit about Natalie.
16:27Natalie is my granddaughter.
16:29She's even my great-granddaughter.
16:31Wow.
16:32She don't look old enough to be a great-granddaughter.
16:34She's always had this lovely soul about her, just, you know,
16:38and she's my oldest granddaughter.
16:41And growing up, yeah, there was hard times for her growing up,
16:45but she just took everything in her stride.
16:48We saw she, back in November last year,
16:50she did some qualifications in nails, brows, tanning as well.
16:54So, do you think that's what her goals are and that's what her passion is?
16:58Yeah, she loves the beauty side of things.
17:00She decided she wanted to go and rent a room
17:02and it didn't work out because, obviously, she was travelling,
17:05she's got Gafer and it was the childcare and everything, you know,
17:09so I came up with a bright idea.
17:11Let's do the shed up.
17:13Ah!
17:15Natalie plans to make her shed into the new premises of her nail business.
17:20I think she's sort of thinking, well, there's my next step.
17:23It needs a new roof.
17:25It's clear that she's got drive and she's got some vision.
17:28Who's there to guide her through things?
17:31Financially, that is not something we can do.
17:34I have my own family. Natalie's mum has other children.
17:37A business in the shed sounds quite exciting
17:40and me and Kieran are quite keen on helping Natalie
17:43to bring that vision to some fruition.
17:50In Middlesbrough, Natalie is about to get a taste
17:53of the cosmetic high life at Rashpal's prestigious clinic.
17:57She's booked in for one of their popular new treatments
18:01from aesthetic therapist Laura.
18:03So if you'd like to just lay flat, lying upwards onto the bed, please.
18:09The Hydrafacial removes dead skin, sucks out impurities
18:13and pumps in nutrients and moisturisers.
18:16At £140 for the hour, it's not something Natalie can usually afford.
18:23So vitamin C will target brightening, pigmentation.
18:27We've got retinol to target ageing and then also we do other boosters.
18:31Feels nice. Perfect.
18:34So how long have you been doing it for?
18:3612 years, I've been doing beauty therapy.
18:39So how does the training work?
18:42Training like this, which is your Hydrafacial,
18:44which is a specific brand,
18:46if you're in an employment, the employment pays for it.
18:50Laura's learned on the job.
18:52If Natalie can conquer her lack of confidence,
18:55it could soon be her turn.
18:57Do you think you could have a go at doing it yourself?
19:02I think so, yeah. You think so? Yeah.
19:04Well, what I'd love for you to do is come back into clinic this week...
19:07Right, OK. ..and trial it with our therapist, Carly.
19:10Right, OK. Are you up for that challenge?
19:12Yeah, definitely. Lovely. Yeah.
19:14Giving a Hydrafacial in this high-end clinic
19:17will give Natalie the chance to really push herself.
19:20I do have confidence, it's just I need to bring it...
19:23It's a little bit harder to bring it out.
19:25I would love to just do something that completely changes that.
19:31In Gateshead, the Sings are off to the shops with a £67.
19:37Can we just get a taxi?
19:39I think that might blow our budget.
19:41But when you live comfortably,
19:43it's easy to forget about the cost of travel.
19:48We need a return to Chesley Street, please. Yeah.
19:51We need the cheapest way, we're on a tight budget.
19:53£15, please. OK, mate, that's lovely. Thank you.
19:57It takes £15 and an hour of their time to reach the market.
20:04Here's the challenge. We've got 20 quid each, all right?
20:08And we need to try and get the most we can for our money.
20:12There's 20 quid for you, Kieran.
20:14I'm having this little one to help us.
20:16We'll take 20 quid as well, girls. Can you hold that?
20:19The challenge is on.
20:21Rashpal and the twins hunt for supermarket specials.
20:25So we need some bread and we need some porridge.
20:29Outside, Kieran and Amrin look for some bargain fruit and veg.
20:35£7.50, do you think we could ask for a little bit of a discount, Amrin?
20:39Do you think you could...? We'll do it for £7.
20:41£7? Thank you very much. Thank you.
20:44Rashpal's keeping a close eye on the money.
20:47Any food that you might have on a reduced section or anything like that,
20:51or anything that might be coming reduced,
20:53because we're on, like, a really tight budget.
20:55What a bargain. 14p each, yeah?
20:57Yeah. And he's shared them to our list.
20:59If you want, we could even make a cake.
21:01It's all going so well, until they get to the checkout.
21:06That is £20.66, Kieran. I'll get it for you.
21:09Sorry, we're actually... We're £0.66 overspent.
21:12We've only got 20 quid.
21:16We're going to have to put them both back.
21:18We're going to have to put them both back. Sorry.
21:21That's your 34p change.
21:23It's a lesson on the challenge of living on a budget,
21:26especially these days.
21:29For me, it really makes me empathise
21:32with how Nat has to consider every single penny carefully
21:37in a world which is only getting more and more expensive.
21:41So we spent £15 of our budget
21:45on just travelling to the local town to do this shopping,
21:50and it's made a massive hole in our budget,
21:52so that's really going to be challenging now.
21:56To be honest, I'm quite shocked that with £7,
21:59all I was able to get was three different vegetables
22:03and one piece of fruit.
22:06Did we bring to light that the budget really isn't enough
22:11for the next four to five days for a family of five?
22:14Hello.
22:19Day three of the swap.
22:21Underlying the Singhs' success is faith
22:23and giving back to the community.
22:25Now Natalie and Callum are stepping into their shoes
22:28and visiting the local gurdwara,
22:30part Sikh temple, part community centre.
22:34The sharing of food, or langar,
22:37is a big part of visiting the gurdwara.
22:40Kieran and Rashpal come regularly to cook or clean up
22:44as an act of humble service to others.
22:47So I definitely got the sense that it wasn't just a religion,
22:51it was more of a family.
22:54After helping with the washing up
22:56and paying their respects in the prayer room,
22:58they catch up with Rashpal's friends Ravi and Gagan.
23:03So this place worships for Sikhs or anyone else,
23:06any other religion, from any background,
23:08you're welcome on a Sunday.
23:10The reason we sit on the floor is everyone's equal
23:12in front of God's eyes.
23:14The beauty of Sikhism is it's the main two pillars,
23:17like foundation is Simran and Seva.
23:19So Simran means chanting your holy rhymes
23:22and Seva is you doing selfless voluntary
23:25for anybody in terms of food,
23:27in terms of cleaning of the gurdwara.
23:29So you can have food with anybody regardless of their religion,
23:33so you're all equal.
23:35So did you meet him and his family through this?
23:38My dad used to work here, he was the main priest,
23:40and that's how we met through Rashpal,
23:42because he used to come in every week here and sing on the stage.
23:45Rashpal and his family have certain roles when they come in,
23:48or do they just do a bit of everything?
23:50They all come in as a family together,
23:52again, helping out where it needs to be,
23:55again, just bringing that humbleness into their personalities.
23:58Their friend said they were very generous and very humble.
24:02They're just like normal down-to-earth people.
24:06Very interesting.
24:07It felt like a big family community in there.
24:10I mean, they all do everything together.
24:12It was lovely, it was really nice.
24:20Back in Gateshead, Natalie's best friend Regan
24:24is taking Rashpal and Kieran into the backyard
24:27to reveal the details of Natalie's business plan.
24:33Nice and spacious.
24:34At the moment, she's trying to set things up,
24:37get a desk in there to kind of be able to do her nails on.
24:42So, yeah, it is a very much so work in progress,
24:45but that is what she is working towards.
24:48So, Regan, she's got a beauty couch here, then, yeah?
24:51Yeah, that's where she does her waxing and her eyelashes.
24:58Right, so this is a couch that she's working from.
25:01It's dawning on the Sings that Natalie's plan
25:04faces some major difficulties.
25:06This isn't going to work because of the weather,
25:10the fact the shed has no window, light source.
25:14No, it's not cheap to get it up and running.
25:18The Sings have some serious thinking to do
25:21if they're to help Natalie succeed.
25:24Coming up, can Natalie see out the swap?
25:28It's my idea of hell. I'm overcoming quite a loss.
25:31I'm just going to keep pushing now.
25:33And can Rashpal nail his next challenge?
25:36What do you think?
25:48Natalie's been learning the road to riches can be bumpy.
25:52Initially, we did get a lot of abuse, racially.
25:57While the Sings are getting a reminder of a life
26:00where every penny counts.
26:02So, we spent £15 of our budget on just travelling
26:07to the local town to do this shopping.
26:12It's day four.
26:14Natalie's struggled with confidence her whole life
26:17and has been dreading today's activity.
26:20Every week, Rashpal and Kieran keep themselves sharp
26:24by pushing themselves physically with personal trainer, Kelva.
26:28Pleased to have you here. Excited.
26:31I want to go home.
26:33A lot of people, they want the effects of the gym,
26:36they just don't want to go to the gym, you know.
26:38There's a lot of times I kind of think,
26:41I'm going to go to the gym, I'm going to go to the gym,
26:43and then I kind of walk in and see everyone,
26:46they know what they're doing and I don't know what I'm doing,
26:49so I just think, no, it's my idea of hell.
26:53This is awful.
26:56It takes a while, but with Keldra and Callum to encourage her,
27:00Natalie's giving up her inhibitions
27:02and stepping right out of her comfort zone.
27:05My whole body's shaking.
27:07That's what we want. Give me an extra one for that.
27:09Pull down, pull down, pull down.
27:11I definitely think I've built my confidence quite a lot, actually,
27:14because I didn't think about who was watching or who was there.
27:17Three reps.
27:18I'm overcoming quite a loss.
27:20I'm just going to keep pushing now.
27:22Beautiful.
27:23Was it as bad as you thought?
27:25I actually really like that, yeah.
27:29Like it?
27:33In Gateshead, it's Rashpal's turn for a test.
27:36Sophie is one of Natalie's few clients.
27:39So, would you like to pick a colour?
27:42Can this leading aesthetic doctor master a manicure?
27:45Go for that one, because it matches Rashpal.
27:47Nice, matches your gym for that, yeah.
27:49But Rashpal soon gets sidetracked by Natalie's shed.
27:53Her vision is to have the shed. Yeah.
27:55Do you think that's a good option?
27:57Do you think it's a viable option?
27:59I think it's a lot harder in your shed,
28:01because it depends whether she's got the room,
28:04you need to get the council out and then stuff like that.
28:07Potentially a lot of hurdles.
28:09Yeah, to reach that point.
28:11Ten years in business has taught Rashpal
28:14that Natalie doesn't need the shed to succeed.
28:17What she does need is guidance and support.
28:20I think there's a lot more to this than simply, you know,
28:24buying some product and expecting people to be...
28:28..coming into your business.
28:30There's a lot more expenditure involved in this as well.
28:33What do you think?
28:35Very good. Thank you. I'm really, really impressed.
28:38I've really enjoyed it. Very, very pleased with it.
28:41The deal with Sophie is that she'll pay
28:43whatever she thinks the job is worth.
28:45For something like this, I think a customer or a client
28:48would pay £10 to £15.
28:50Yeah, well, that's... That'll help you.
28:52That's really going to help us. Thank you very much.
28:54Thank you. You're welcome.
28:56When Sophie handed over the £15,
28:59inside of me, I felt like,
29:02wow, this is going to massively help our budget.
29:05It also made me think about how Natalie would feel
29:08by getting £15 for a set of nails,
29:12and if she was to, say, make £30 to £60 a week, for example,
29:16it would make a huge difference to her life.
29:20In Middlesbrough, Natalie's nerves are on edge.
29:23She's agreed to give the cutting-edge hydrafacial treatment
29:27to Rashpal's senior employee.
29:29I've never really even looked into doing something like this before.
29:33I just have to go in and...
29:36..just be more confident in it.
29:41Giving a facial treatment in this high-end setting
29:44would intimidate any beginner.
29:47Hydrafacial room again? Hi!
29:49This is Carly, our senior therapist. Nice to meet you.
29:52She'll be observing the hydrafacial today.
29:54At first, I wanted to back out a little bit.
29:56I kind of wanted to just say, no, maybe I'll just watch.
29:59I didn't want to hurt anyone, didn't want to break anything.
30:02You'll be fine, don't worry.
30:04I didn't know what I was doing.
30:06Will you tell me how? Yeah.
30:09Oh, my God, I'm scared!
30:15It's hard, though.
30:16It looks so much easier when you're doing it than actually doing it.
30:20Yeah, like anything, isn't it, the more you do it?
30:22But it's just practice. Yeah.
30:2420 minutes in, she's starting to relax and concentrate on the job.
30:31Just on the nose. Mm-hm.
30:33So cool.
30:34You can feel the confidence in you now.
30:36Yeah, I feel really comfortable doing it.
30:39Being in the clinic again today
30:41just confirmed that that was the type of environment I want to be in.
30:45Amazing. Glowing. I love it.
30:48Lovely. You're doing a really good job. Thank you.
30:51It was really good.
30:53It was quite scary, I thought I was going to hurt her.
30:56I would maybe have a look at doing it in the future.
30:59It was just good to get, like, a little sense of what it's like.
31:04In Gateshead, the Sings may not think the shed
31:08is the answer to Natalie's business dreams,
31:10but it still needs painting and they are determined to help.
31:14We really want to try and finish this shed when Natalie comes home.
31:20We're making good progress. Halfway there.
31:23What starts out well soon turns to disaster.
31:27It's not quite going to plan, actually.
31:29We put the primer on on the outside.
31:31As soon as we finished, it started pouring down.
31:34The paint just washed off the shed.
31:38And we could just see it just going,
31:40and my heart just sank when that happened.
31:42And we know how much this means to her,
31:44and we were determined to get it finished despite the challenges.
31:47Rashbal's plans may have been dashed by the rain,
31:50but he's determined to get it done.
31:54Rashbal's plans may have been dashed by the rain,
31:58but in the kitchen, the entrepreneurial girls are flourishing.
32:02Are you sure it's two tablespoons of milk?
32:05Yeah.
32:06Normally at home, we don't really do that much baking.
32:09Cos Mum doesn't let us get the kitchen dirty.
32:13They've made cakes to sell
32:15and raised a few quid for the weekly coffers.
32:19The Sing girls aren't the only ones with a spring in their step.
32:23In Middlesbrough, Ava's leading the charge on a shopping spree.
32:27Going shopping today was obviously quite daunting at first
32:30because I'm not used to spending money on things
32:34that either I want or need, or Ava wants or needs.
32:39Ava shows her mum just how it's done.
32:42Seeing Ava's little face,
32:44I'm picking her up and I'm going,
32:46Ava's little face.
32:47I'm picking out her five million babies that she wanted.
32:50It was really nice, actually.
32:52It was a really nice feeling, watching her,
32:54watching how excited she was.
32:56Do you think we might be done now?
32:58I don't think she knew what to do with herself
33:00cos normally she's used to Mum saying no.
33:07Natalie's still nervous about spending.
33:10£161.
33:12I thought it was going to be worse.
33:15Like, it's the first time I've been able to just go,
33:17yeah, just go and get what you want
33:19and not have to worry about how much it costs at the end.
33:22Ava.
33:24Oh, OK.
33:25She went mad.
33:26She did what she went there to do.
33:28I won!
33:30I won!
33:33In Gateshead, the cakes are finished
33:35and the girls are off to sell them to the neighbours.
33:39The girls have really taken to the challenge
33:41and I've been really impressed by that.
33:43I think this may just be the start
33:45and they've been talking about making a cake for Natalie and Ava too.
33:52I think it went really well.
33:54We sold all four cakes and we made a profit of £3,
33:57which is good, so that can go towards a meal
34:00or maybe a treat at the end.
34:02I think it went really well.
34:04We sold all four cakes and we made a profit of £3,
34:07which is good, so that can go towards a meal
34:09or maybe a treat at the end.
34:11Coming up, Rashpal's desperate to find a way
34:14for the nail business to deliver for Natalie.
34:17What sort of kit do you need when you're first starting out to invest in?
34:20Well, it's probably about 2,000 to 3,000 pounds.
34:23Wow.
34:24While Natalie is also sizing up the cost of her dream.
34:27It's so expensive.
34:29£110.
34:38Dr Rashpal Singh is learning what a big difference a few pounds can make.
34:43That's really going to help us. Thank you very much.
34:46While Natalie and Ava are learning the joys of spending.
34:49She went mad.
34:51Did what she went there to do.
34:55Day five.
34:57Natalie's confidence in her plan is building.
35:00So far, she's spent money on toys for Ava,
35:03but now it's time to invest some of the budget in her business.
35:07Maybe I'll get a few...
35:10..neons.
35:11I think I just want a little bit more variation
35:14because I haven't got a lot at the minute.
35:17Getting into beauty is very expensive.
35:21The smallest things, like a pot of gel nail varnish,
35:24is anywhere up to £20 a bottle.
35:27It's so expensive.
35:30I do think the prices are really good.
35:33Especially for what you pay online and things,
35:37it's a lot cheaper than doing it that way.
35:40£110.
35:52In Gateshead, Rashpal hasn't given up on helping Natalie to succeed.
35:58So it's clear that the shirt isn't going to be the best option.
36:02I do really want to help Natalie.
36:04Given the high cost of travel,
36:06the Sings want to know how Natalie can establish herself
36:10in the local area.
36:11First stop is Paula, the nail specialist in a nearby salon.
36:16So the lady that we're doing the house swap with,
36:19Rashpal was able to do a set of nails
36:21and generally what she charges is about £15 for gel nails.
36:25That's slightly lower than most places.
36:27Typically, how many customers could they say a week?
36:30Seven clients a day would be, you know, I would say.
36:34But when you first start, it's a lot less than that.
36:37So what sort of kit do you need when you first start now to invest in?
36:40Well, it's probably about £2,000 to £3,000 worth of stuff.
36:44Wow.
36:45It's not cheap to start.
36:46I think until you build up that clientele,
36:49you need quite a lot of support, I would say.
36:52I understand.
36:53We also got some really good advice on what somebody might do
36:57to start in their own business
36:59and how long it takes as well to generate a nail business.
37:05Next, it's a visit to Caroline, owner of another local beauty practice.
37:12Caroline, in this field and where you are,
37:14is there a place for somebody who might be eager and keen
37:18to learn and develop their own skills?
37:21Most definitely, yeah.
37:22You're in a salon and there's somebody there that can help you,
37:26then that's better, because if she's doing it from home on her own,
37:30there's nobody there to guide her.
37:33She needs a little bit of experience, a bit of salon experience.
37:37It's a fantastic business to be in.
37:39I absolutely love my job.
37:41If somebody wants to do this as a living,
37:43I'm more than happy to help them.
37:45This is Caroline, owner of another local beauty practice.
37:49The Sings now have all the facts they need
37:52to put together a life-changing plan for Natalie.
37:57In Middlesbrough, the swap is almost over,
38:00but Natalie's got one last bit of pampering to enjoy.
38:04The salon today is a really nice treat for Natalie
38:07because she never gets her hair done.
38:09She doesn't like to justify how much it costs for her hair,
38:12so she just sorts it herself pretty much as much as possible.
38:17I never get to come out and treat myself and get my hair done,
38:20so it was a really lovely experience,
38:22and they were all really nice in there as well.
38:24So I think maybe it is something that I should focus on,
38:27going out more and just getting my hair done more,
38:30because it's made us feel ten times better.
38:36In Gateshead, the girls haven't spent the profit
38:40from their baking on themselves.
38:42Instead, they've bought some jeans
38:45and are applying their own fashion styling as gifts
38:48for Natalie and Ava.
38:52They've really, really surprised me
38:54at how well they've done with the swap
38:57and the fact that they've still got high spirits.
39:00Both Sing parents thought the swap
39:02would give their girls a life lesson,
39:04but instead, they've learned something about themselves.
39:08Both Rashpal and I,
39:10we need to spend more quality time together
39:13with each other and the children.
39:16We've made a curry, and we even managed, girls,
39:19we have a little bit of money left
39:21to buy that pack of biscuits we want.
39:23All for yours? Mm-hm.
39:28The week has been full of challenges for Natalie,
39:31but she's come away with a new resolve.
39:34I think it's really helped meeting people who know the family
39:40and when they're saying how much they really have struggled,
39:43even from being little, like, even from being kids,
39:46they have struggled, literally come from nothing. Yeah.
39:49And it's the same as me, and they've got all this.
39:52It just makes me think, well, yeah, I'm struggling now,
39:55but I could... I could have all this.
40:03Day six, it's time to go home.
40:06They're meeting up at a hotel midway between their homes
40:10to share what they've learned.
40:14Hello. Are you OK? You all right?
40:16I'm nervous. Natalie, are you all right?
40:18I'm OK. Good to meet you.
40:21The first topic of conversation is the budget.
40:25I was dreading...
40:28..obviously learning how you're managed on my budget.
40:31I've got immense respect for you.
40:33Oh, thank you.
40:34When we grew up, like, we didn't have everything.
40:37What people don't realise is just how difficult it can be
40:40with such a small budget.
40:42It's taken a week to understand Natalie's situation
40:45and come up with a way to help.
40:47Now it's time to reveal their plan.
40:50We saw that there was a lot of outstanding finance on a laptop.
40:53Yeah. So what we're going to do immediately
40:55is we're going to clear the finance on your laptop straight away.
40:59Sorry. No, don't worry.
41:04That's one of the things I struggle to pay for the most
41:07because it's always the last to come out
41:09and then by the time it comes out, I haven't got it there
41:12and then that's the one thing I constantly worry about.
41:16Getting on top of her debt
41:18will make a huge difference to Natalie's life.
41:21But the Sings' next offer could put her on the path to success.
41:25I know from my own experience it's really important
41:28to be the best you can be at a skill.
41:31Yeah.
41:32And also that means as well as having the right qualifications
41:36to be able to do that.
41:37So we're going to pay for accredited courses
41:40for nails and nail art.
41:42Thank you so much.
41:45Natalie can now build lucrative skills,
41:48but where will she put them into practice?
41:50You had a thought that you could possibly do your nail business
41:53from the shed?
41:54Mm-hm.
41:55We would advise that it probably...
41:57We've realised some of the challenges that you might have with that.
42:01Yeah, I noticed them too.
42:03The electrics and...
42:04The shed is not the answer to her problems.
42:07Instead, Rashpal's come up with a solution
42:10that with hard work will enable Natalie to reach her full potential.
42:16I've managed to get you an opportunity somewhere
42:19which is local to you.
42:21This person is an expert in nails for over 20 years
42:25and is willing to give you an opportunity
42:28which could lead to some substantial paid work for you.
42:32A break in a salon might just be the opening Natalie needs
42:36to give Ava the start in life she deserves.
42:39A way to start a new life.
42:41I don't think you understand how much just that changes my life.
42:46It's also important to remember
42:48that it's good to be part of a community as well.
42:51And I want you to consider yourself part of our community now as well.
42:55And I know how important it is to build self-confidence and belief.
43:00And, you know, you'll have me in your corner.
43:03LAUGHTER
43:05I'm going to go and get my nails done.
43:07The two families started worlds apart.
43:10Now they share a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
43:14I really appreciate everything.
43:18It's just going to completely change my life, so...
43:21I'm just... I'm more than grateful.
43:23I've just loved it. It's been amazing, yeah.
43:26Finally, it's back home.
43:29Natalie has been shown the path to the future
43:32she really wants for herself and Ava.
43:35Let's see here.
43:37What's that?
43:39Dear Natalie and Ava, I hope you enjoy your personalised gift.
43:42Aw!
43:43So, after six days of hard work,
43:46Natalie and Ava are finally back home.
43:49It's been amazing.
43:51It's been amazing.
43:53It's been amazing.
43:55Aw!
43:56So, after six days living like the other half lives,
44:00does money buy you happiness?
44:02I still don't think that money buys happiness, no.
44:05You can be the richest person in the world
44:07and you still need family and friends.
44:09So, no, I don't think money can buy you happiness.
44:12I just think it helps a little bit.
44:14It's important to have money for the basics and necessities in life
44:17and to make sure you've got a roof over your head for your children.
44:21But it certainly doesn't buy you happiness.

44:55But that'll be fine.
44:57I actually really loved it.
45:00I've just been in this, like, position for so long
45:03and it's hard to see a way out of it, so thank you.
