Mimica designed a new food label to tackle food waste by showing consumers whether the food is fresh or not.

00:00If food waste were a country, it'd be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases
00:10in the world after China and the U.S.
00:32Mimika Touch helps reduce food waste because we show consumers whether their food is fresh
00:37or not and helps prevent them throwing away food that's perfectly good.
00:44We allow the true freshness to be known and that can achieve an extension of minimum two
00:49days but we can really extend up to an extra week on your main supermarket shop.
00:56Mimika Touch is a temperature sensitive indicator.
01:00Inside there is a bump trace.
01:02We cover these bumps with a hydrogel.
01:05When it's solid, the hydrogel is really smooth but during the activation, an activator solution
01:12is added on top of the gel.
01:14This solution reacts with the gel and it starts the change in phase from solid to liquid.
01:20So when the reaction is concluded, you can then feel the bumps underneath.
01:24When you feel bumps, the food is no longer good to be consumed and when you feel smooth,
01:30the food is still safe.
01:31We're tackling climate change by helping to reduce food waste.
01:35Food waste creates about 10% of all the greenhouse gases in the world.
01:47Our vision is to become the global mark of freshness.
01:50We're starting with food but anything perishable can benefit from our technology.
