00:00Hey, what's up guys, I'm KBHD here.
00:06Hey, what's up Marques?
00:07Are you getting the Tesla Cybertruck?
00:10No.
00:11Well.
00:13All right, it's been about 48 hours and I'm back at the studio and I've been able to sort
00:20of crystallize a lot of my thoughts that have been floating around about the Cybertruck.
00:24You may have watched my initial super quick early video of it from the event.
00:28A lot of people have then after that event, I didn't order one and a lot of people kept
00:32asking me, hey, wait, Marques, did you preorder the Tesla Cybertruck?
00:36And my answer is usually, I don't really need a pickup truck.
00:39So no, the Cybertruck didn't really change that, but it was really interesting.
00:44But then of course you have the test ride, which for Tesla is notoriously effective.
00:47And then just a bunch more information and images and videos since that event have come
00:51out.
00:52A lot of these photos and videos show new angles of things like the interior, the lights
00:56in the bed of the truck and a view from the back seat and the spacious roof line.
01:00And even how much that weird marble countertop looks so strange in the front.
01:05I'm not sure still how I feel about that, but it's definitely still there.
01:09Twitter user Matt Landry got a video of the opening and closing of the rear hatch.
01:14So the driver presses a button on the side and it's pretty cool to see it basically slot
01:18open and reveal the rear view mirror and slotting closed will protect the six and a half foot
01:24bed that's allegedly so strong that you can stand on it.
01:27And also Elon on Twitter has since confirmed that there will be an option to make that
01:31cover a solar panel, which could regenerate up to 15 miles of extra range per day if you're
01:36into that.
01:37So if you're really out in the middle of nowhere, then this could help you get a couple extra
01:40miles, which could be useful.
01:42It's really cool, but it's not the reason I ordered it though.
01:45The specs of course are still right.
01:47And a lot of people who did their test drives posted their videos of them and they were
01:50demoing the dual motor version, which is doing zero to 60s in like four and a half
01:55seconds.
02:01So that's definitely faster than most other pickup trucks.
02:03And even though that's about the least important spec for a pickup, you know, you care more
02:07about things like total load capacity and how much you can tow.
02:11That is still a fun by-product of having an electric motor and they will definitely show
02:15that off.
02:16So it's fun, but that's not why I ordered it though.
02:18And then something pointed out by Quinn of Snazzy Labs in his video, the bed itself has
02:23an L-track rail on the inside of the bed.
02:26And then the floor of the bed, there's a bunch of slots that you can use.
02:29And these two things together can make whatever combination of mounting points you want to
02:33tie things down or arrange what you're carrying in that huge six and a half foot bed.
02:38That is really smart.
02:39I think they should have mentioned that on stage.
02:40It's not why I'm buying it, but I do appreciate a good modular design.
02:43Also, since the event, Elon has tweeted at SuperSaf confirming that there will be a matte
02:48black version of the Cybertruck after people sent him renders.
02:53And that's, I swear that's not why I'm ordering one.
02:58Look, at the end of the day, when people are talking about Cybertruck, you inevitably land
03:01on the design, just what the thing looks like.
03:05And some parts of it are dope and some parts of it are weird.
03:09I actually think the lights in the bed are pretty cool, assuming you can turn them off.
03:14The huge bar light on the front looks sick, and it's actually very functional on the road.
03:19And the roof light is more of just cool looking lights.
03:22But yeah, it's the angles and the line choices that make this one of the most polarizing
03:27vehicles I think I've ever seen.
03:29There were well over 20,000 comments, actually, let me just check.
03:32It's over 30,000 comments now on the Cybertruck first impressions video.
03:36And reading through the comments, they almost alternate hilariously between like, this
03:40is amazing.
03:41This thing looks dope.
03:42It's one I'm glad they think outside the box.
03:45I'm really happy.
03:46I want one.
03:47And then the others will be, this is stupid.
03:49I hate it.
03:50It's the dumbest looking truck ever.
03:52It's the worst.
03:53I think when it comes down to it, it's these two lines here, instead of curves.
03:57I mean, when you look at this truck, there isn't a single curve anywhere.
04:01It's all angles and points and lines.
04:04That's kind of like how I'd draw a truck when I was like five years old and didn't
04:06know better.
04:07But the simplicity of it means it's very different from all the other trucks that are on the
04:12road right now.
04:13Much more striking.
04:14And when you think about it and you take some time with it, the more you realize this was
04:19all on purpose.
04:20To stand out in a sea of hundreds of other pickup truck options, this one had to be different.
04:26It had to be striking and it had to stand out in a way.
04:29And then they had to really lean into it unashamedly and really embrace it to give
04:34people a reason to think about it differently.
04:36It's the same way I'm convinced right now that Apple lately does think about making
04:41new product design choices that are intentionally a little bit jarring.
04:46Just knowing that the memes will come, but soon enough when people get used to it, it'll
04:50be the reason it's recognizable and even iconic.
04:53Tesla here is trying to break into a market, pickup trucks, that has been established for
04:58decades and it's so mature that the top five best selling cars in America for like 30 years
05:04running are the Ford F-150 and a bunch of other trucks that look like the Ford F-150.
05:10Here's a really great tweet from a Twitter user and research director, Brett Winton.
05:14Imagine you're trying to break into a hundred billion dollar market segment that is 89%
05:19male, has stronger brand loyalty than any other segment, and doesn't give a shit about
05:24your eco-friendly bona fides.
05:27That is where Tesla is.
05:28The point being, it's a market that's not only super mature, but it's super locked in.
05:33There are literally millions of people that buy a Ford F-150, then five years later, buy
05:39another Ford F-150, and then six, seven years later, buy another Ford F-150.
05:44If you come out with a new Tesla pickup truck that looks kind of just like the Ford F-150
05:50and instead of an engine, it has a battery and some motors and a Tesla logo on it, they're
05:56not going to buy it.
05:57Just like they didn't buy the other competition that kind of looks like it, they're just going
06:01to buy another F-150.
06:03So after opening the presentation with a whole monologue about how pickup trucks have all
06:07looked the same forever, which is totally true, they leaned hard into a completely different
06:13look and never looked back.
06:15This is why I'm pretty sure next to Model Y, the Cybertruck could end up being the most
06:19important vehicle Tesla makes, and in this tech world, possibly the most disruptive.
06:23But yeah, in these two days, it's grown on me a bit.
06:26And in the two years between now and when they're actually into production and start
06:31to ship the thing, it'll be growing on other people too.
06:34As I'm recording this, Elon tweeted 146,000 Cybertruck orders so far.
06:39These are from people who didn't even wait for it to grow on them.
06:42They just liked it already.
06:43I still don't think it's pretty.
06:44It's definitely not.
06:45It's more brutalist, but I don't think other pickup trucks are pretty either.
06:49It just had to be different.
06:52And I'm here for its position as a disruptor, and I guess I'm finally starting to embrace
06:56my position as a tech reviewer, whereas this is sort of a piece of tech, I'm on the bleeding
07:01edge of this stuff and I'm investigating it just to figure out if it's good.
07:05So I ordered one.
07:06Well, I put down my $100 refundable deposit that holds my place in line.
07:11I can turn into an order when they finally do go into production, but I'm in line for
07:14a triple motor Cybertruck.
07:17I'm all in.
07:18So I'm looking forward to testing this thing and we'll see how it goes.
07:21Hopefully it's on time along with the other stuff that we're expecting in the next two
07:24years.
07:25But that's pretty much it.
07:26Also, if you want to get in on this merch, there's a couple days left of it to get ordered
07:30where it will ship before the holidays.
07:32I think nine days left.
07:33So link below to that as well.
07:35Think that's it.
07:36Okay.
07:37Thanks for watching.
07:38Catch you guys in the next one.
07:40Peace.
