00:00Hey what is up guys, MKBHD here and welcome back to some extended coverage of the world's
00:09most densely packed keynote WWDC 2019.
00:12So one of the many things that showed up on stage during that 2 hour plus event was the
00:17next version of iOS, iOS 13.
00:20So I sat through that 2 and a half hour keynote so you don't have to and I installed the super
00:26buggy iOS 13 beta on my iPhone so you don't have to either.
00:31So these are the best of those new features coming to iOS for your future iPhone or maybe
00:36your current iPhone.
00:37Top 5 iOS 13 features.
00:39So number 5 is the speed optimizations.
00:42So this is a pretty minor thing it seems, they sort of opened with it for a hot minute
00:46and if you blinked you might have missed it but they made some pretty bold claims about
00:49iOS 13 speed versus the already really fast iOS 12.
00:52They went along the lines of 30% faster face ID unlocking and 50% smaller packages for
00:58app downloads and 60% smaller for app updates.
01:01So there should be much faster downloads and installing of apps especially the bigger ones
01:05and 2x faster launch speeds.
01:08Wow.
01:09Now again this is a beta so these things are still being worked on and I don't know if
01:13it's a placebo but the one thing I do feel like I notice is the faster face ID unlock
01:17especially when putting it side by side against iOS 12.
01:20The 2x faster app launching speeds that is tough to see because the beta is so buggy
01:24and things are constantly crashing and lagging all the time so I can't verify that but I'm
01:28really looking forward to that.
01:30Overall iOS 12 is already faster than previous versions especially on older devices so I'll
01:34welcome another free speed upgrade.
01:36The number 4 is shared wireless audio.
01:41So this is like a headphone splitter but for AirPods.
01:45So they showed it on stage as two people sort of holding their iPhones near each other and
01:48then enabling audio sharing so they can basically hear the same thing from one source.
01:53So then that gets your mind going about different ways that this could be useful.
01:56That could be fun for two people next to each other on a plane watching the same movie together
02:01but both with wireless headphones or maybe going for a run with someone and both listening
02:05to the same music at the same time.
02:08Things like that.
02:09So it seems like a pretty cool feature to have.
02:10Now I say seems like it because I haven't gotten it to work yet on my beta.
02:15I tried for a while.
02:16Apparently other people have gotten it to work.
02:18I'm just going to attribute it to the fact that it's super unstable.
02:21But this is something that I'm going to be thankful for having when traveling.
02:23So it's a solid new audio feature that of course takes advantage of having Bluetooth 5.0.
02:27The number 3 is the new keyboard and I can put new in air quotes because Android's had
02:33this feature for I want to say maybe about a decade now.
02:36But the stock keyboard now in iOS 13 has swipe typing and that's it.
02:41So you could do this with third party keyboards like swipe or the Google keyboard if you installed
02:45them on your iPhone in the past.
02:47But now it'll be built in so you can have all your keyboard suggestions and everything
02:50you're used to in one place with swipe typing.
02:53I personally love it for typing longer sentences on bigger screens.
02:57Not sure if this is also coming to iPadOS but it's welcome on the iPhone.
03:01Okay so those last three were a bit more minor updates as you could tell.
03:04But I think these next two, the top two, are pretty major.
03:07So number two is an overhaul of what's maybe one of the top three most used apps on anyone's
03:13iPhone.
03:14The photos app.
03:15I did a very good demo of this at WWDC but it's also working pretty well on my beta too.
03:20Basically the UI is organized a bit different and it gets a bunch of new features that I
03:24like.
03:25So at the bottom you have these couple of different photo modes.
03:27You have all photos mode which is literally just a grid of everything.
03:31Then days mode which lets you scroll through the best photos you've taken each day with
03:35sort of smart highlights of certain ones it thinks you'll like.
03:39Then months again zooms a bit out and gives you the best photos of each month.
03:44Then years again zooms out giving you a throwback of some of the best stuff from each previous
03:49year.
03:502018, 2017, 2016, etc.
03:52Sort of a rewind of what happened around that day each year.
03:54And then when you're actually in a photo the editing controls are pretty sweet.
03:58They got an upgrade.
03:59They're much more extensive and smartly laid out and fluid.
04:02You can do auto adjustments if you want or really dig down into there with contrast and
04:07color sharpening, noise reduction.
04:09And there's also red eye correction built in and you can still mess with the same filters
04:13as before.
04:14But the best part, to me anyway, is that this also applies to videos.
04:19So you can mess with the same edits to color, contrast, sharpness, even noise reduction
04:25for video is still there which is amazing.
04:27And this also means you can now rotate a video which you literally could not do in iOS 12's
04:33photos app along with flipping and there's tilting and warping and perspective changes
04:39for every single clip.
04:41You can even change the aspect ratio.
04:43So there's a lot going on and I'm a fan and I hope Google Photos also can build this stuff
04:47in too eventually.
04:49And that brings us to number one, the most anticipated feature of iOS.
04:53It got the loudest cheer or at least one super loud one from the crowd.
04:57And that is dark mode in iOS 13.
04:59So love it or hate it, people have been wishing for this and asking for it for years.
05:03The default all white colors of iOS can be blinding.
05:06So now there's a system wide dark mode.
05:08You can enable it from the control center and it turns all your stock apps and menus
05:13and notifications and widgets and everything dark.
05:17Dark backgrounds, light text, the whole stock UI.
05:20Now all the third party apps inside those, you still have to change them yourself.
05:24So if you want everything dark like YouTube and Twitter and all the rest, you have to
05:27toggle those yourself.
05:29But yeah, that quick toggle for the UI is now super simple and easy to switch everything
05:33black.
05:34And now with that, there's also some new wallpapers to go with it built into iOS 13.
05:39So these actually, the couple of new ones with a little dark and light logo in the corner
05:43are dark mode compatible, I guess I'll say.
05:46So they will automatically switch when you toggle dark mode, they'll switch between them
05:50back and forth between dark and light.
05:52Plus if you don't use one of these, you can turn on dimming.
05:54So whatever wallpaper you have will dim to be darker if you have dark mode on.
05:59And hey, you might even save a little bit of battery since the iPhones of course all
06:02use OLED displays that don't use power when the color black is displayed.
06:05So there it is, finally dark mode for iOS 13.
06:09There's also a couple smaller things that didn't quite make this list, kind of like
06:13how every year Apple always has that little extra slide with all the stuff that they wanted
06:17to make sure you knew were getting included, but they didn't have time to go over.
06:20So if you actually pause on that exact slide from the keynote this year, they actually
06:24did it again.
06:25And there's something called Wi-Fi selection in Control Center.
06:28So now if you're in Control Center, you can 3D touch the Wi-Fi icon and a list of networks
06:33pop up.
06:34Seems like the intuitive thing to do.
06:36Bluetooth does the same thing.
06:38And that's actually something that the newest beta of Android just got rid of.
06:42There's also Memoji improvements, so you can add piercings now to your Memoji or even put
06:47AirPods in its ears.
06:50So I guess that's a thing worth knowing.
06:53There's also Login with Apple, which is designed to replace other social logins, but with much
06:58more security instead as the focus, like a really impressive dedication to shielding
07:03your information from the companies that keep asking for your login.
07:06So they'll generate a dedicated login email address randomly every time you log in, so
07:11they can't swipe yours.
07:13Very nice.
07:14And then the volume box, of course, is finally fixed.
07:18So for reference, here was iOS 12 and the ridiculous volume changing.
07:23And here is iOS 13 right next to the volume rocker, nice and small, clean, much better.
07:30So that is it.
07:31That is the best of the new features coming to iOS 13 that we know about anyway.
07:36My personal favorite is still dark mode.
07:38So obviously I put that at number one, but let me know what you're looking forward to
07:41most in the comments below.
07:43And this is still super early in the beta.
07:44It'll be a public beta in about a month and then eventually rolling out to people beyond
07:49that.
07:50So you can expect it stable in a little waste time.
07:53But either way, that's been it.
07:56Catch you guys later.
07:58Peace.
