00:16Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here
00:17And this, this is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus
00:24So not the Galaxy Note 10
00:25I think that's enough of a different phone that deserves its own video
00:29And it'll get that
00:30But I've been using the Galaxy Note 10 Plus for about the last week daily
00:34And I have some thoughts
00:36So this is actually my favorite Samsung design smartphone
00:38By just a little bit over the rest
00:40Yes, they're all kind of the same slab of glass and metal
00:43But the Note is always a little boxier than the others
00:46A little bit more squared
00:47And this year it really is full on squared off and boxy and edge to edge
00:51And I actually like that a lot
00:52It's still aluminum on the sides
00:54And then glass on the front melting into the back with these slopes and curves
00:59But the phone for whatever reason is just a little bit lighter than you'd expect it to be
01:02Like it's a huge phone but it's not that heavy
01:05But that's nice I guess
01:06And then Samsung has done build quality really well for years now
01:10Fully IP68 water resistant as you'd expect
01:13The display comes all the way to the edges and the corners
01:16The camera bump on the back is there
01:18But it's not too much that it affects typing on a flat surface
01:22And for once all the ports on the bottom of the phone line up through one line of symmetry
01:27Nice
01:27And then we all seem to have something to say about this crazy Aura Glow color
01:32There are other colors of the Note 10 Plus
01:34But you might not even know about those because this is the one that gets all the attention
01:38It's almost like they saw Huawei's three color gradient phone getting a little popular
01:42And they're like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait
01:44Hold up
01:45What if we just give them all the colors?
01:47So now you have this crazy psychedelic every color look
01:51So it looks impressive on camera
01:52But it's really mostly more of a shimmery silver most of the time you're looking at it in real life
01:57And then the best way to get those colors to pop and photographs and things like that
02:01Is to shine a lot of light on it at the right angles
02:05But on top of that, it's also a mirror finish and a fingerprint magnet
02:09Earning it, I guess my award for most difficult phone to make videos of, of all time
02:14The question is, would you still skin it or put a case on it?
02:17Like pretty much everyone does with every other phone
02:21And I think just because of the fingerprints, I'd end up skinning it
02:23But the good news is if you grab a dbrand skin
02:25You'll still kind of get some of the bits of psychedelic rainbow colors picking up a little bit
02:31So I'll link these in the description for the channel sponsor below if you want to check those out
02:34So yeah, I guess final word on the build
02:36Big glass phone
02:38Again, you know, but it's a nice shape
02:40And I like the build quality over some of the other big glass phones
02:44So I like it
02:45There's only two things that they changed that were questionable
02:47One is the button placement
02:49It's now just the power button and volume rocker and they're both on the left side
02:54And then there's nothing on the right side of the phone at all
02:56I personally prefer the power button on one side and volume on the other
02:59But this wasn't so bad to get used to
03:01And the whole Bixby thing is actually hideable
03:04You can set a long press of the power button to just open the power menu instead of Bixby
03:10So you can essentially silence accidental Bixby presses forever, which is great
03:14But the other one is the headphone jack or the lack thereof
03:18And this was a tougher one to stomach for a lot more people
03:21The Galaxy Note, the phone that's been known to do it all
03:24The big phone with the room for all the big features
03:27Gets rid of the headphone jack
03:29Like not a couple more months, Samsung
03:30You couldn't have waited to the Galaxy S11 or something like that
03:33You had to get rid of it starting with the Note and the flagships
03:37Seems like kind of a weird choice, but that's how you know it's dead
03:41So if you really need a headphone jack in your next phone
03:43You can now cross Samsung flagships off your list
03:47Because there's no way the S11 has one either
03:51Now I've said in the past it's not a huge deal for me
03:53But what I think really rubs salt in the wound here
03:55Is the speaker on the Note 10 isn't exactly great either
03:58But hey, at least they put some USB-C headphones in the box
04:01And there's a growing world of good wireless headphones out there
04:04So it's just the world we're in now
04:06The fingerprint reader has moved underneath the glass on the Note 10
04:09Just like on the S10
04:10And it's still just a half a beat slower
04:13And a half a little bit smaller than the one I'm used to from the OnePlus 7 Pro
04:17You can see in a side-by-side the difference
04:19If you open up and unlock your phone many, many times a day like me
04:23You will kind of start to notice this
04:25I was hoping the ultrasonic fingerprint reader would be better by now
04:29But that waiting game continues
04:31It's definitely not terrible, just something I noticed
04:33Like I'm basically nitpicking at this point
04:35But then again, when a phone costs $1,100
04:39You really should be nitpicking at this point, right?
04:41So on the subject of nitpicking
04:43The display
04:44No pun intended
04:46It's beautiful, right?
04:48It's a 6.8 inch corner-to-corner 1440p AMOLED panel
04:53Very bright
04:54Great colors and customizable color profiles
04:56Like I said, it goes right up to the corners
04:58Tiny bezels
05:00Like, I mean, almost not even there anymore
05:02And the edges roll over the sides a bit
05:04But not as dramatically as they used to
05:06And the ultrasonic fingerprint reader is underneath it
05:08And it's been one of the best phone displays in the industry
05:10For multiple years running
05:12There's just a little bit of off-axis color shift
05:15It's not too drastic
05:17You know, you see it on some OLED panels
05:19But overall, it's not too bad
05:21It's just a pleasure to look at
05:23But, and you probably saw this but coming from a mile away
05:25But
05:27It's 60hz
05:29And that is my sticking point
05:31Again, I just came from the OnePlus 7 Pro
05:33Which had a 90hz display
05:35And I've been using other high refresh rate stuff
05:37The iPad Pro is 120hz
05:39The ROG phone
05:41The Razer phone
05:44The difference is actually really noticeable
05:46As far as smoothness
05:48And perceived speed
05:50Like even if things are happening at the same speed
05:52They feel faster on the high refresh rate display
05:54But I really miss it
05:56In the Note 10
05:58I really wish the Note 10 had a smooth high refresh rate display
06:00Even just 90hz
06:02I don't need the full 120hz
06:04And I'm pretty sure Samsung can do it
06:06Fairly confident they're already making high refresh rate OLEDs
06:08For other phone OEMs
06:10But it's not in the Note
06:12The phone that's supposed to have everything
06:14Doesn't have just this one thing
06:16That I happen to really like
06:18The Infinity O display
06:20With this little hole punch cut out at the top
06:22For the front facing camera
06:24Is totally fine with me
06:26It disappears to my eye pretty quickly
06:28Since there's almost no information ever up there
06:30In the middle of the top of the screen
06:32And the cut out is nice and small
06:34Because there's no extra depth sensor
06:36Or any of that stuff
06:38And speaking of cameras
06:41They're essentially the same as what we've seen
06:43From the Galaxy S10
06:45It still has the dual aperture main camera
06:47Which I think a lot of people forget about
06:49Like they could have ditched this
06:51And many people would never have noticed
06:53But they kept it
06:55And there's also a 2x telephoto camera
06:57And an ultrawide in tow here
06:59And Samsung hasn't made the most gigantic leap forward
07:01With their cameras over the past couple of years
07:03But it feels like that's mostly because they were already pretty good
07:05Still top 3 or 4 out of all the smartphone cameras
07:07Right behind your classic Pixel and iPhone
07:09And you gotta get it up there with Huawei
07:11Dynamic range and colors are still great
07:13And as you can see
07:15Even a pretty good amount of overall contrast
07:17To bring in some real shadows
07:19And I feel like I've noticed the consistency
07:21Between the three cameras get better
07:23And handle more challenging shooting scenarios overall as well
07:25So that's just the beauty of computational photography
07:27Is the software just keeps getting better and better
07:29A new feature they talked about
07:31Is called zoom in mic
07:33I believe
07:35So you'll be taking a video
07:38And whatever subject you've zoomed in on
07:40You'll also zoom in the audio
07:42For that subject based on the microphones all over the camera
07:44Seems fine
07:46Alright this is the test of zoom in mic
07:48On the Galaxy Note 10
07:50I'm convinced it's not actually like
07:52Laser focusing on my voice
07:54So much as it's just making me louder
07:56But what do I know
07:58One of my favorite new things is actually
08:00That there's now a dedicated night mode
08:02That I do leave on
08:04It's kind of similar to Pixel's night sight
08:07You can actually turn it on in a dark environment
08:09Take a much better photo
08:11So now it's up to Apple I think
08:13As really one of the last major ones
08:15Who doesn't have a dedicated night mode
08:17Hopefully we'll see that in iPhone 11
08:19Battery life
08:21A, almost A plus
08:23It's a 4300 mAh battery in this phone
08:25So I love that it's a huge battery cell
08:27Even though there's a whole slot
08:29In the side for a stylus
08:31It has wireless charging
08:33I really miss that a lot with the OnePlus 7 Pro
08:35And this big Note 10 Plus
08:37Is capable of 45W fast charging
08:39Which is low key
08:41Actually insane for a phone
08:43I really want to try it
08:45Fastest charging I've ever used in a phone
08:47Was warp charge 30
08:49So this is 50% faster than that
08:51Which is crazy
08:53But either way
08:55You can expect 4 to 5 hours of screen on time
08:57Every day out of this phone
08:59Like I've gotten with normal to heavy usage
09:01It's pretty good
09:04So for a lot of people
09:06The S Pen is what really makes the Note
09:08So special
09:10I don't know about you
09:12But I've never really been the biggest S Pen user
09:14I feel like every time I'm using a Galaxy Note
09:16I try it for the first week or two
09:18And then I slowly use it
09:20Less and less
09:22This new S Pen is built a bit different
09:24It's a little bit shorter now
09:26And it's unibody of course
09:28But it'll feel pretty familiar
09:30Same idea with the button on the side
09:32And then also as you can see
09:34You get a blue pen with the Aura Glow phone
09:36Fun fact
09:38But the headlining new feature of the S Pen this year
09:40Is the ability to do gestures in the air
09:42I'll tell you right now
09:44I can never quite get them to work
09:46Great
09:48But even if I could
09:50I don't think I would ever use them for this
09:52Sorry, gimmick city
09:54I already know there's going to be one person in the comments
09:56Like well actually there's going to be an SDK
09:58So that people can build in Samsung's S Pen air gestures
10:01Into their apps
10:03Which is true
10:05But how many apps do you expect to do that really?
10:07Or how many users do you know
10:09That are on the edge of their seat
10:11Waiting to be able to fast forward
10:13Through YouTube videos
10:15By twirling their S Pen
10:17Yeah
10:19It's a gimmick
10:21But it still does all of the awesome stuff
10:23The S Pen has always done
10:25So things like annotating and drawing on screenshots
10:27It's the best version of that in my opinion
10:30It's cool
10:32So literally as you write
10:34It's transcribing what you write
10:36Into actual text with OCR
10:38That is searchable in the notes app
10:40This is dope
10:42So well done Samsung
10:44And there's also all kinds of little tweaks like that
10:46Throughout their software
10:48Samsung's come a long way
10:50Since they introduced One UI
10:52It's still not my favorite Android version
10:54Or skin if you want to call it that
10:56It's not the fastest updated
10:58And performance, despite the lack of high refresh rate
11:00Are pretty awesome
11:02Thanks to the big time specs
11:04Snapdragon 855, UFS 3.0 storage
11:06And 8 or 12 gigs of RAM
11:08I mean you can't really go wrong with that
11:10No heat issues
11:12Multitasking is great
11:14Gaming is great on this huge screen
11:16It's what note users are used to
11:18So all that being said
11:20Yes, the Note 10 is
11:22A small incremental upgrade
11:24To the Note
11:27That still makes it a pretty great phone
11:29It hits all five of my pillars of a great smartphone
11:31Which is awesome
11:33And if you remember, last year
11:35My best big phone of the year
11:37Was the Galaxy Note 9
11:39And this manages to be an upgrade
11:41In pretty much every way except for the headphone jack
11:43From that phone
11:45So that's impressive
11:47Just because none of the updates were revolutionary
11:49Or massive
11:51All that really means is
11:53Note 9 buyers don't have to upgrade to this
11:55If you're already a Note fan
11:57This one is also going to be a great phone
11:59That you're going to like
12:01And if you weren't already into the idea of a Galaxy Note
12:03Then this one won't really change your mind
12:05But for those of us who are just really into the tech
12:07The overkill lovers
12:09The big phone users
12:11The power users
12:13The Galaxy Note 10 Plus is a great phone again
12:15And it's also clearly now the favorite child
12:17Among what's now a Note family for Samsung
12:19The Galaxy Note 10 Plus has a lot of things
12:21That the smaller Note 10 doesn't have
12:23Including but not limited to
12:25The support for 45W wireless charging
12:27The depth sensors on the back for AR
12:29The micro SD card slot
12:31The bigger RAM and storage options
12:33The much much bigger battery
12:35The 1440p display
12:37All these things
12:39Only on the bigger phone
12:41But that's a rant for another day
12:43And a video for the future
12:45But for now
12:47That's my thoughts on Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 Plus
12:49Thanks for watching
12:51Catch you guys in the next one
12:53Peace
