00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here and welcome back to Apple Pro Week.
00:09You saw the Mac Pro video, the second impressions, if you didn't, that will be linked up here
00:13or below the like button.
00:14This is the other piece of that kit, it's the Pro Display XDR.
00:18So these will both get longer term reviews and I've committed to keeping you guys updated
00:22on Twitter with interim findings and things like that, suggestions for things you want
00:26to know, whatever benchmarks may happen, etc.
00:30But in the meantime, this is a quick sort of second impressions after using them for
00:33a bit and an unboxing of the Pro Display XDR and the Pro Stand.
00:38Also before you start freaking out about my eye being a bit red, yes, your boy got LASIK
00:43two days ago, no more glasses, and my vision right now is actually incredible, like I can
00:49see like kind of everything, in fact you got a little, you got a little lint on your shirt
00:54right now.
00:55Anyway, that little bit of bruising, it'll go away soon, try to ignore it for this video.
01:00Let's get into the unboxing.
01:00Alright, so huge cardboard shipping box again and inside you have the Pro Display XDR box
01:27that's very large and very flat.
01:30I kind of expected it to be a bit more colorful like all the rest of the ads for it, but just
01:34a plain white box again.
01:36And then you get the box within the box, which should have some accessories.
01:39For the monitor that would be a thick 7 inch by 7 inch microfiber cloth with a little Apple
01:44logo on it.
01:45The whole thing's about the size of a CD.
01:47It's really thick actually, but okay.
01:49And then you get your power cable and your Thunderbolt cable, both black, both braided,
01:54both very high quality.
01:56And then the box like cleverly shifts to each side to give you a little more room to
02:00pull the display out.
02:01This is a really nice touch and it's easy to come off like a fanboy saying this, but
02:05the Mac Pro packaging and the Pro Display packaging are some of the nicest product boxes
02:10I've seen in a while.
02:11So yeah, they'll do great on Unbox Therapy.
02:15And then of course, you can't forget your paperwork, which does include two more gigantic
02:20Apple stickers, the same size as the Mac Pro's Apple stickers.
02:23Again, I'm not putting them on my car, but if I did want to match a matte black car,
02:28I totally could.
02:29Anyway, all right.
02:30I've been a fan of boxy designs on stuff in the past, the new iPod Pros, some smartphones
02:35like the Note 9 and Note 10 in the past and boxy stuff like this.
02:39So I really like the squared off sides of the new Pro Display XDR and you see that right
02:44away.
02:45It's so flat on the sides that you can just stand it up on its own without a stand.
02:49I actually thought about leaving it there for a while while I went and got the stand,
02:53but then I thought a bit more rationally about it and just resting it on the side for a bit.
02:58So then comes everyone's favorite piece, the Apple Pro Stand.
03:03So Apple famously on stage announced this as a $5,000 monitor with an optional $1,000
03:09stand.
03:10I said, that's crazy.
03:11It's a $6,000 monitor that you can buy without the stand if you want a thousand bucks off,
03:14but either way, this is the grand for a stand that got a lot of attention.
03:19The box it comes in though, which is separate, not going to lie.
03:22It's also a really nice box and you get the stand out and it's just this slab of solid
03:28aluminum as you'd expect.
03:30It's protected in all sorts of ways by various stickers and cloths.
03:34But then the final piece of the puzzle is taking the Pro Display and snapping it on,
03:38connecting it to the stand, which thanks to magnets is super easy and really satisfying.
03:44So there you have it.
03:49So I'm not even going to lie, low key, between the new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR, I
04:01think I was looking forward to the new display for longer than I was looking forward to the
04:06new Mac Pro.
04:07Like some of you guys might not know if you're newer, but for years I was a dual monitor
04:11person.
04:12Hardcore.
04:13I loved my older pair of 31 inch Dell UltraSharp matte finish boxy monitors that I used for
04:20years and years after some other dual monitor combinations that I tried.
04:24These were amazing.
04:25So when the iMac Pro came out, you know, it was great having all that power and everything,
04:30but now that I've moved to a single glossy display with huge ugly bezels, that was kind
04:36of killing me.
04:37These displays are clean, modern looking, kind of boxy the way I like them.
04:42Yeah, I'm just really happy they exist.
04:45But yeah, these are very unconventional, very unusual displays in a lot of ways from the
04:50spec sheet to the price, to the target demographic, to the stand it comes on.
04:56So two weeks into using it, here are some of my thoughts.
04:58First of all, this is the anti-glare version.
05:00So you're not going to see any sort of light reflections.
05:04This is a thousand dollar option on Apple's website.
05:07Now typically a matte version of a display will have that top panel of glass, have a
05:11film on top of it that is anti-glare.
05:14What Apple's described this as is they've nano-etched the back of this top layer of
05:19glass so that the coating is not like visible or felt by your hand, but it's underneath
05:24and that'll scatter the light waves and stop the reflections.
05:26To me, the anti-glare reflectiveness is really, really good.
05:31So there was no way I was going to go back to a glossy monitor again and this super
05:35reinforced that decision.
05:36You can see with this monitor next to a glossy display, the difference is very clear.
05:41They have done a great job with this and it looks great from every conceivable angle.
05:45The only downside is I think this has a real effect, whoops, this has a real effect on
05:49the viewing angle.
05:50So if you see this, it looks like a pretty evenly lit display.
05:54If you look on Apple's site, they'll say it has an essentially 180 degree viewing angle.
05:58Like they say, you can look at pretty much any angle and get the same image, but look
06:01at the way it just sort of gets darker instantly on the sides here.
06:07And that's the way it looks in person.
06:08It's not perfectly uniform across the entire thing as far as viewing angle, which I want
06:14to test out possibly looking at the glossy version of this and seeing if it does that
06:18same thing the same way, but it's not perfectly uniform.
06:22This is why I tilt the monitors towards me in my setup instead of having them flat.
06:26Then the ports on the back of the monitor are pretty nice to have.
06:28So with this one, you get three USB type C and one Thunderbolt for input.
06:33And if you plug this monitor into a MacBook Pro, it charges the laptop through that Thunderbolt
06:37cable, which saves you a cable coming out of the laptop like some other monitors do.
06:41And also on the back is your power and the braided power cable, which is nice and high
06:45quality and about six feet long.
06:47And then you of course have all the holes in the back of the monitor for ventilation.
06:51What's nice though, is it is completely silent, which is not true about every other display
06:58in this class.
06:59Now for the full review, I'll be going more into detail with other pro displays, which
07:03don't all have the same feature set and don't all look like this, but for now, yeah, it's
07:07a silent monitor.
07:08So yeah, ventilation does its job and also you never have to look at the back of the
07:11monitor once you've put it on your desk.
07:13So that's great.
07:15But the front, the front of this monitor, which you look at all the time is great.
07:20It's everything I could ask for in a monitor except for high refresh rate.
07:24It's a 32 inch diagonal, thin bezels, boxy with sharp corners, 6K resolution, a thousand
07:31nits sustained brightness with 1600 nits peak, 576 local dimming zones, which give you a
07:37million to one contrast ratio and a fully accurate P3 color gamut and 10 bit color depth.
07:42To me, the 6K resolution is not the most impressive part.
07:45We had a 27 inch 5K iMac.
07:47If you scale that up to 32 inches, you naturally arrive at a similar pixel density for a 6K
07:5232 inch display.
07:53But what I really was impressed with was the contrast.
07:56All those local dimming zones have that about as close to an OLED as I've seen in an IPS
08:01or a not OLED display.
08:03It's not quite the same.
08:04You can still see a little bit of bleeding, which somehow Apple avoided in their demos.
08:08They look like there would be no bleeding at all.
08:10There's still a little bit, but it's really impressive.
08:13So as a pixel lover, I am definitely liking that.
08:16But also I should say when I connected the stand at the end of the video, I should reiterate
08:20connecting the stand is really impressive.
08:23It literally snaps on with magnets and takes no effort at all.
08:27And then this stand itself is actually really, really nice.
08:32Okay.
08:33So it's made of a solid piece of metal, so it's hefty.
08:35It's weighted.
08:36It doesn't wobble with a monitor of this size at all.
08:38So that's a good start.
08:39And then it's height adjustable with a single finger if you want.
08:42And at any point, if you want to switch to portrait for any reason, there's a switch
08:47on the back that only activates when you're high enough that there's clearance.
08:50So you find that switch, you flip it to unlock, and then the whole thing swivels easily to
08:55portrait.
08:56And the UI even automatically switches to portrait mode without you having to do anything
09:00in the settings.
09:02That's pretty sweet.
09:03So really the hinge that's holding it up is just perfectly balanced and weighted that
09:07a monitor this exact size feels effortless to maneuver around on your desk whenever
09:12you want.
09:13Now, all that being said, is this stand worth a thousand bucks?
09:18The good answer is just no.
09:19That's an insane amount to pay for a stand.
09:22But then again, it's kind of hard to evaluate the price of a monitor stand.
09:26Nothing else really does what this one does.
09:29Nothing's made of the same stuff all the way around.
09:31Nothing has this level of effort into design.
09:34How much does this stuff matter to you?
09:36Also, how much do people normally pay for monitor stands?
09:38Like on the Apple website, it says the Pro Display XDR weighs 16 and a half pounds.
09:43And on Amazon, you can get a dual screen monitor stand made of plastic that supports up to
09:4722 pounds each for 33 bucks plus shipping.
09:51So that and a VESA mount and you're set.
09:53But would you get that for the Pro Display XDR?
09:59I don't know.
10:01I don't think I would.
10:02Half the people that end up getting one of these businesses don't even need a stand.
10:05They'll just get the VESA mount and plop this into their current setup and don't need
10:09to buy the Pro Stand.
10:10But the other half that just have millions of dollars to pour into production will just
10:14get the Pro Stand anyway and put it on their desk and they'll enjoy it.
10:17It'll be great.
10:18And then the last few percent, people who are high-end consumers, people like me, other
10:23YouTubers will get the Pro Stand and will also like it a lot.
10:27And I will be comfortable saying this is the best stand you can get for the Pro Display
10:31XDR, but it also probably is still overpriced.
10:35So image quality, amazing as you would expect.
10:38Color accuracy, excellent.
10:39A couple of video edits in, I can verify it's been really nice.
10:43Viewing angles, a little bit questionable, but I tilt them towards me so it's no big
10:46deal anyway.
10:47And also it supports True Tone out the box, which is their automatic color shifting based
10:53on the environment around you.
10:54There's sensors up there for that.
10:55And it's on by default.
11:00I'm not sure why that's on by default.
11:02Anyway, I'm really impressed so far.
11:05Having two is a major setup upgrade for me.
11:09I'll tell you right now, having two 6K monitors on my desk is fantastic.
11:15I'll tell you what, getting LASIK and then getting two 6K displays and editing videos
11:20is a totally different experience in one month than it was before.
11:23But anyway, yeah, full review coming up, which will include some thoughts on HDR, some workflow
11:30talk and what that potentially means for YouTube videos.
11:34And of course some comparisons to some other pro monitors.
11:36So keep it locked here for your holiday tech videos.
11:39Definitely subscribe if you haven't already.
11:40New Retro Tech episode coming on Monday and that one is Sega Genesis.
11:44If you haven't seen it yet, it's really good.
11:46So yeah, keeps rolling on.
11:48Can I call this Techsember?
11:49Techsember.
11:50I'm going to call it Techsember.
11:51Thanks for watching.
11:52Catch you guys on the next one.
11:53Peace.
