00:00:002024 China, the beast is back.
00:00:20It all comes down to this moment.
00:00:22Real question right now, who is on top?
00:00:28What's up, FISE family, and welcome to the fifth and final day of this FISE World Series here in Shanghai.
00:00:37We're getting ready for the first competition of today, which is the UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Cup, the men's finals.
00:00:46My name is MC Egon, and I'm being joined today by the flatland expert, Yohan Chen.
00:00:53I'm really excited to be here today to watch the best of world-class flatland riding.
00:00:58We've had an action-packed qualification round, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the top eight.
00:01:03Okay, and we're really lucky today because it had been raining the whole day yesterday.
00:01:08We just managed to get the skateboarding finals fitted in, but as you can see, dry skies.
00:01:16The people are coming in for the first riders of today.
00:01:21Here at the West Bund site on the left riverbank of the Huangpu River.
00:01:34The stage is looking fine. We actually took off the roof because of the high winds that we had yesterday.
00:01:41So just for everyone's safety, and look at the deck that we've constructed for this flatland area.
00:01:57And our BMX MC, Lionel, is getting the Chinese crowd amped up on this Sunday morning.
00:02:04It's half past nine here in Shanghai. Still a bit early, but get your morning coffee, and we'll get the show on the road.
00:02:14Yeah, Lionel Cardoso, absolute flatland legend. Used to be a pro rider in the 90s.
00:02:21Getting the crowd going.
00:02:23He did a pretty good job yesterday, because as we wrapped up the skateboarding finals here in the commentator booth,
00:02:28we could actually hear the madness going on at the flatland stage.
00:02:33Yeah, we had a really good crowd yesterday. The Chinese crowd were just really into all the riding.
00:02:39It looked as if they could see what the difficult tricks were, because when riders were going onto the back pegs,
00:02:45or onto the pedals, or doing difficult switches, they were really getting amped behind it.
00:02:50And it was so good to see, because I think a lot of this crowd was seeing flatland for the first time.
00:02:55I mean, that's the idea that I've had at this event as well.
00:02:58This is the first time FIS has landed here in Shanghai.
00:03:02Last time we came here was six years ago already, in Chengdu.
00:03:06But yeah, I think for a lot of the Shanghai local people, this must be an introduction to all these urban sports,
00:03:12to the skateboarding, the scooter riding, roller freestyle.
00:03:16Actually, as we speak, we also have the BMX freestyle competition going on, on the BMX park as well.
00:03:23Yeah, I saw a little bit of a crowd reaction for them as well.
00:03:26And every time somebody did a jump or a backflip or something, the crowd was just going insane.
00:03:32It was so good to see.
00:03:36We also have another livestream going on, on the Instagram of, I don't know, which rider we're looking at.
00:03:40Ah, that's Moir, that is. He's always backing the riders, absolutely loving all of the spectacular tricks that people are doing.
00:03:48He's on the crowd, giving it some support.
00:03:50He rode as well yesterday, really good. He's got some really unique tricks.
00:03:55So we're looking at the competition format finals.
00:03:58Two heats of four riders, one run, three minutes per rider.
00:04:02And the overall impression is scored out of 100.
00:04:09Now you said it's a three-minute run, but do the riders have to keep on riding for three minutes,
00:04:13or can they take a short little break in between linking their tricks?
00:04:17Ah, this is a really good question, because the riders have a little bit of breathing time before their links.
00:04:24And what they have to do is complete their link before the three minutes is up.
00:04:30Anything outside of that three minutes isn't scored.
00:04:33So the judging criteria, first of all, is difficulty, risk, flow and style, consistency, originality and versatility, very important.
00:04:42Variety of tricks, control of the tricks, bike control, execution.
00:04:48And judges will be looking at the overall impression.
00:04:52That's a lot of work to take into account for that judging.
00:04:56But we have an expert judging panel here.
00:04:59They've got a wealth of experience. We've got Kotaro Tanaka.
00:05:02He is an absolute flatland legend from Japan.
00:05:05He runs a flatland school and also Moto Works bike company.
00:05:09We've got Ephraim Katlo, ex-professional world champion.
00:05:12He also runs Flatmatter's website, Ryan Russell, wealth of experience.
00:05:17And Hiro runs 430 in his own flatland contest.
00:05:22430, is that the flatland boutique in Tokyo?
00:05:26Exactly, yeah, that's the one.
00:05:28He's got some really nice stuff.
00:05:30I actually paid a short visit.
00:05:32After the Feast of Inoshima in February, I went to Tokyo and went to visit the shop as well.
00:05:38It's actually a proper brand that they have.
00:05:41Yeah, it's pretty cool.
00:05:42I was speaking to him yesterday and actually found that the 430 name is named after the anniversary of when the company started.
00:05:54The anniversary of when the company started.
00:05:57The 30th of April.
00:05:59We're going to the stage to our MC.
00:06:12He's the new young talent from Spain.
00:06:14Check out his move in the service guy.
00:06:16Your next rider from Germany is Dustin Olt.
00:06:26He's one of the best spinners in the game.
00:06:28Dustin Olt representing Germany.
00:06:30He has that fighting spirit.
00:06:32From Japan, Ryo Katagiri.
00:06:37Doing it for Japan, a rider favourite, arguably the most creative rider in the group.
00:06:43From Canada, it's Jean-William Prevost.
00:06:49Watch the speed and aggression of this guy. Prevost will be going all in.
00:06:57From Japan, it's Kiyo Ayakawa.
00:07:03It's Games gold medalist, must have some of the hardest blender variations.
00:07:09From the Netherlands, it's Cisse Van Bercken.
00:07:16So good to see this guy in the final. Watch out for his signature moves.
00:07:23From Thailand, it's Pak Fung Pusa Hart.
00:07:28Watch out for this guy. This guy is representing Thailand.
00:07:32He's a very talented rider.
00:07:35And your number one qualifier from Japan is Ryo Katagiri.
00:07:42Absolute weapon on the bike.
00:07:44Come on, make some noise for the riders, please.
00:07:51I'm jealous of the rider kit that the Japanese squad has.
00:08:03So, welcome back to FISE World Series here in Shanghai.
00:08:07We just did the rider introduction for this UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Cup Finals in the men's category.
00:08:15We have eight of the best riders on top of their game.
00:08:22And they're having their last minute of warm-up.
00:08:24We're getting ready for the first group of riders.
00:08:26I'm ready for the first group of riders.
00:08:28And those will be Varo Hernandez, Dustin Alt, Ryo Katagiri and Jean-William Prevost.
00:08:36And then, let's say 15 minutes, we will commence with the second group.
00:08:41Kiyo Hayakawa, Cisse Van Bercken, Pak Fung Pusa Hart and Yu Katagiri.
00:08:48Now, leading up to these finals, we also had qualifications and semi-finals.
00:08:54Now, Johan, you went to check them out as well?
00:08:56Oh, yeah. It was an absolutely electric qualification.
00:09:00We saw a lot of legends get knocked out.
00:09:04And that is just indicative of how high the standard is here.
00:09:10At this sort of level, you can't afford to make too many mistakes.
00:09:13At this sort of level, you can't afford to make too many mistakes.
00:09:16And we saw quite a few heavy hitters get knocked out of the top eight.
00:09:20Still doing great runs, but you need to do no more than two touches to get through to the top eight, I would say.
00:09:29Also, only three of the Japanese squad made it into the finals.
00:09:34Yeah, we were saying we were expecting a Japanese-dominated final.
00:09:38And even though we saw some absolutely cutting-edge riding from the Japanese,
00:09:45we've just got a small handful of them today.
00:09:50Ito Misato.
00:09:54Kiyo Hayakawa, he's made it through to the final.
00:09:59Suji Sugawara is absolutely killing it today.
00:10:03Moto Sasaki, one of my favourite riders, unfortunately made a couple of mistakes.
00:10:09Didn't make it through to the final.
00:10:12Yu Katagiri was absolutely phenomenal yesterday.
00:10:26Yeah, Yu Katagiri looks like he's moving at a different time.
00:10:30Yeah, Yu Katagiri looks like he's moving at a different time and space.
00:10:36Also, if we compare it to the last FIS World that we had in Montpellier,
00:10:41we have Yu actually got the bronze medal,
00:10:44then Kiyo just didn't make podium in his fourth place,
00:10:48and then Ryo Katagiri in seventh at FIS Montpellier.
00:10:59Yu Katagiri was the favourite to win it in Paris, but had two flawless runs in qualifications.
00:11:06And in the final, had a couple of touches which just gave him the third spot,
00:11:12but still a spectacular run all the same.
00:11:17Later this year, we still have some big competitions coming up.
00:11:21We have the European Championships next month in Luxembourg.
00:11:26It's actually not too far from Belgium, so I think I might pay it a visit.
00:11:31Yeah, that one looks spectacular.
00:11:33I think Vicky Gomez has been helping to put that together.
00:11:37And we have the actual leaderboard.
00:11:39So, not in this final, Yu Soji.
00:11:42But we have Yu Katagiri in that second spot in the World Cup right now.
00:11:46Jorge Gomez in third, but not in the final.
00:11:50Kiyo Hayakawa in the fourth spot.
00:11:52And Ryo Katagiri in fifth.
00:12:00So, that means someone might be able to jump to that first spot with the absence of Yu Soji.
00:12:10Excellent. We're going to see some really good riding from Kiyo Hayakawa today.
00:12:17And some astonishing riding, no doubt, from Yu Katagiri.
00:12:21Watch out as well for John-William Pravost, a.k.a. Dub.
00:12:24He'll be going in hard.
00:12:31Varo Hernandez as well. So good to see this guy in the final.
00:12:42So smooth on the bike.
00:12:45I watched him have a little crash yesterday, and even his crash was smooth.
00:12:52He has that Spanish suave.
00:12:55Three minutes on the clock, on the G-Shock clock for Varo Hernandez.
00:13:00So good on front and back wheel as well, this guy.
00:13:04You can just see how smooth he is.
00:13:08Makes it look so easy on the back peg.
00:13:10And straight to pedals, yes!
00:13:16I love watching Varo's finishes on those links.
00:13:19It just shows a statement of intent when he just stomps those pedals.
00:13:23On the back peg, making it really difficult.
00:13:26Higher in the center of gravity, now he's moved to steamroller.
00:13:29To crankbacker, forwards, backwards.
00:13:32Switch foot.
00:13:36He looks so calm, it's unbelievable how relaxed he looks when he's riding.
00:13:42Straight to pedals, go on Varo!
00:13:47So, landing a trick straight to pedals.
00:13:49That can improve your score as well, right?
00:13:51Yeah, and it also looks so good as well when you finish your link with a proper statement of intent.
00:13:57Just stomping it straight back to the pedals.
00:14:03So smooth on the bike.
00:14:06I watched him have a little crash yesterday, and even his crash was smooth.
00:14:11It's a nice punctuation to the link when you finish it off really strong.
00:14:17Jumping back to the pegs.
00:14:19That's what I was saying about him switching from front wheel to back wheel.
00:14:22He's so good at that, yes!
00:14:26As he lands on the other peg, he's not even readjusting, like he sticks the landing.
00:14:30That's it, yes Varo!
00:14:33So far, this is a perfect run.
00:14:35So far, this is a perfect run.
00:14:40And yeah, like you say, he doesn't seem to need to correct himself.
00:14:44He always seems to be in the right position, so there's no sketchiness with him.
00:14:47He just looks in the correct spot all the time.
00:14:54Wow, look at this.
00:14:56Going into cross-footed double rolling, this is incredibly difficult.
00:15:01It just reduces that margin for adjustment.
00:15:09Probably caught his leg on the front wheel as he was doing that cross-footed trick.
00:15:14Yeah, there's not much room for the tyre to go in between the legs when your legs are crossed like that.
00:15:23Oh, another touch there.
00:15:31Just recomposing himself there.
00:15:34Hopefully he can get one more link in.
00:15:3724 seconds to go.
00:15:42He has that Flatland family cheering him on.
00:15:50Yeah, back to the back peg.
00:15:55Can he finish this link before time is up?
00:15:59Back to the front wheel. Yes!
00:16:01Oh, just comes off there.
00:16:06Still, that's a great run from Varo.
00:16:08Always difficult to be the first rider on the floor.
00:16:14Because since this is a judging sport, what happens in BMX and all the other sports is
00:16:19they use the first score as a reference point, if I'm not mistaken.
00:16:23Yes, that's right.
00:16:24Don't give somebody a score that's too high because the judges would like to have some leeway
00:16:30to move above and below it.
00:16:35I think that's a pretty good run for the judges to start off with.
00:16:41He's got such a good mixture of difficult tricks, some of his own combinations.
00:16:50I love those jumps straight back to the pedals.
00:16:53Of course, his switches from front to back wheel are so cool.
00:17:03So what you will see in a Flatland competition is the balancing on the front wheel,
00:17:08back wheel, switching front from to back or the other way around.
00:17:12Pedals.
00:17:15There's no rules when it comes down to the maneuvers that you perform in a competition like this one.
00:17:23Not touching the ground, maybe.
00:17:24Yeah, that's it. The riders will try and avoid that as much as possible.
00:17:29Oh, it just comes off on that unlucky.
00:17:36Yeah, as I was saying, those switches from front to back wheel is so good.
00:17:46Yeah, that's a pretty good score.
00:17:49Pretty good score to start off with.
00:17:52I think he had three touches in that.
00:17:57Let's see how the rest of these riders do.
00:18:01From Spain, we're going to Deutschland, Germany, to Dustin Alt.
00:18:08Yeah, Dustin, as you mentioned earlier, has been feeling a little bit ill on this trip, on his qualification.
00:18:13He picked up some sort of a cold or something,
00:18:16but it's not that you would notice because he's been spinning like a tornado.
00:18:22He's one of the best spinners in the game.
00:18:25This one's a Dustin Alt original.
00:18:27He has a handlebars behind his back into a switch.
00:18:30As he falls backwards,
00:18:34he spins into the time machine, stepping up onto the pedal, making it harder.
00:18:38Yes, Dustin.
00:18:41That's an awesome start for Dustin.
00:18:46Only the second rider of today, but a completely different style compared to Varo Hernandez.
00:18:51Yeah, Dustin's always had such a smooth, fast style.
00:18:57Pivoting into the fakie.
00:18:58Oh, clopper out.
00:19:00Yep, he's pleased with that.
00:19:02That's two out of two.
00:19:06And like Varo, Dustin can ride front and back wheel as well.
00:19:12He's always had such a smooth style, this guy.
00:19:17Super fast.
00:19:19He's paying for his signature.
00:19:22One spin behind his back.
00:19:24Switching to upside down peg wheelie.
00:19:27Switch foot.
00:19:29Juke turning around.
00:19:33Forward to backwards.
00:19:38Switching to the bike under him.
00:19:41As you can see, he puts his other foot on the other pedal, making it more difficult.
00:19:45Pulls that one clean as well.
00:19:48Halfway, the run of Dustin.
00:19:51This is a great run for Dustin so far.
00:19:53He's going to be super pleased with this.
00:19:57But with one minute, 20 seconds to go, anything can happen.
00:20:01Dustin Alton on his runny nose run.
00:20:07He said this morning he was feeling even worse than yesterday, but you can't tell so far.
00:20:16And this is so perfect.
00:20:20Yes, Dustin.
00:20:21The spinning hitchhiker there with the bike vertical.
00:20:30This is an Austin run for Dustin.
00:20:34He's going to be so stoked.
00:20:38Can he make this final link?
00:20:40He's got room for one more.
00:20:41Getting the crowd going.
00:20:43It's been good with the crowd as well.
00:20:45Giving a bit of crowd rapport.
00:20:53They love his mesmerizing spins as well.
00:20:59I think that's probably what he's going to finish off with.
00:21:01Yep.
00:21:02Reaching behind the back.
00:21:04On the pedal.
00:21:05Go on, Dustin.
00:21:10He wanted to finish off a banger there.
00:21:12That's his hardest banger.
00:21:16Spinning like a jet engine.
00:21:20Someone will be out of time just for the crowd.
00:21:23That won't count.
00:21:24Just one mistake in that.
00:21:26But a brilliant run for Dustin.
00:21:31I'm looking forward to seeing what the judges will give him for that one.
00:21:43Oh, wait a minute.
00:21:49Look at the way he reaches for the group behind his back.
00:21:54So that's the time machine here.
00:21:56Standing on the pedal.
00:21:58Just changing that center of gravity a bit.
00:22:00Making it harder by being higher above the peg.
00:22:04The peg being the extension outside of the wheel axle.
00:22:08Doing a whopper there.
00:22:11Landing his back foot on the frame.
00:22:14Might cost him some points in execution.
00:22:16But still quite a feat by Dustin Alt.
00:22:26Spin on both pegs there.
00:22:40Yeah.
00:22:5176.
00:22:53Yeah.
00:22:54Putting him in the front of the pack right now.
00:22:57But we still have six more riders.
00:23:01To impress us with their first run.
00:23:04Next up we got Ryo Katagiri.
00:23:07The number seven from Montpellier.
00:23:10Earlier this year in May.
00:23:13Ryo, he's got to be one of the favorites of the group.
00:23:19I would say probably the most creative rider out of the group.
00:23:23He has such unusual positions that he holds his bike.
00:23:26And really original pumping positions.
00:23:31Ryo changes things up a bit.
00:23:33Almost by holding things in a slightly different way.
00:23:36Either switching his hands or rolling forwards.
00:23:40There we go.
00:23:44With the bike behind his back.
00:23:46It's such an awkward position to pump.
00:23:49And this one as well.
00:23:57He's so...
00:23:59Oh yes!
00:24:02The way that he links those tricks together.
00:24:04Pivoting on those back pegs.
00:24:07Yeah.
00:24:08Just making it a little bit more awkward.
00:24:10The way he holds it as well.
00:24:14Putting his own signature style on it.
00:24:25This one as well.
00:24:28No one pumping that trick like that.
00:24:30Or holding the bike in that position.
00:24:32Wow!
00:24:34Incredible.
00:24:41Katagiri as well.
00:24:43This is the older brother of Ryo Katagiri.
00:24:45He's currently qualified in first place.
00:24:54Snake there.
00:24:56That's a good one.
00:24:57See how he crosses his legs and unwinds.
00:25:03He's making that bike spin under him
00:25:05while standing on just the peg.
00:25:09It's just mystical watching him riding.
00:25:12This position as well is just so awkward.
00:25:19And yet he makes it look so beautiful.
00:25:22Cross-footed.
00:25:23Yeah.
00:25:26Just coming off there.
00:25:29The problem with Ryo's stuff is it's just so difficult.
00:25:32There's such small margins for adjustment.
00:25:45He's pumping back out here.
00:25:47Yeah.
00:25:49It's a fakie peg wheelie.
00:25:51Nobody's spinning that.
00:25:52Oh my god.
00:25:53Double duck round.
00:25:54Swings the bike round 360.
00:25:56Back on.
00:25:57Yes!
00:26:00Absolutely incredible.
00:26:07He's got room for one more link.
00:26:10See what he goes for.
00:26:12Again.
00:26:13Unwinding the cross leg.
00:26:15Switching into peg wheelie.
00:26:25Cross leg.
00:26:26He really wants to pull this one as he's ended it.
00:26:30Time's out.
00:26:31Yeah!
00:26:32But he pulls it.
00:26:36That's the big banger.
00:26:38He's pulled some incredibly hard stuff there.
00:26:45Yeah.
00:26:46He's happy with that run.
00:26:48That's how he got the first place in FIS Hiroshima in 2019.
00:26:55Yeah.
00:26:56This guy, he could totally win the competition with the level of difficulty he has on his tricks.
00:27:03His style as well is absolutely mystical.
00:27:10The way he holds these tricks is just so creative.
00:27:16Putting his own signature spin on all of these manoeuvres.
00:27:20Unwinding his legs here into spinning peg wheelie.
00:27:29As well.
00:27:30Nobody doing that trick in this contest.
00:27:51Undertaker out.
00:27:52Pulls it.
00:27:53Yeah.
00:27:54Worked for it.
00:27:55Could be out of time though, that last trick.
00:28:04Oh, yeah.
00:28:05Easily taking the top spot there.
00:28:10The level of difficulty and originality in his run is...
00:28:16It's bewildering, really.
00:28:22Our next rider from Canada.
00:28:24The number four from the World Championships in Glasgow.
00:28:28And the number two from FIS Enoshima earlier this year.
00:28:32It's Jean-William Prevost.
00:28:36Yeah.
00:28:37A.k.a. Dub, he's been absolutely killing it on his run.
00:28:42A.k.a. Dub, he's been absolutely killing it on the American circuit this year.
00:28:48Dub covers a lot of ground in his legs.
00:28:52He's not taking any prisoners.
00:28:55He will absolutely be going for it.
00:28:58He's got reflexes and speed.
00:29:03Oh, yes, Dub.
00:29:07The aggressiveness in that first run.
00:29:09The first links.
00:29:11Absolutely amazing.
00:29:12He's such a good battle rider as well, like you say.
00:29:15Because he has that aggression, you put him in a one-to-one and...
00:29:19Oh, his undertaker link is incredible.
00:29:24Passes the bike underneath his arms and keeps it going.
00:29:29Spinning the bars as he goes as well.
00:29:31Had a little touch of the front wheel on the floor there, but he's keeping going.
00:29:35He's going to take it into another undertaker.
00:29:37Yep.
00:29:39Onto the pedal, making it even harder.
00:29:42And he's still going.
00:29:44Getting some speed there.
00:29:47Back onto the peg.
00:29:52He looks like he's going to do it.
00:29:55I don't want to jinx him.
00:29:56Oh, it's a cross footed.
00:30:03Whoa.
00:30:04Yes.
00:30:05Yes, Dub.
00:30:08Absolutely awesome.
00:30:09Cutting edge stuff.
00:30:11In the blink of an eye.
00:30:14Changing his position on a bike.
00:30:17There's so many tricks in that combo.
00:30:19So many different positions.
00:30:22Adding to the level of difficulty.
00:30:25Making that level of difficulty and risk really high.
00:30:32Another undertaker there.
00:30:34Pulled out of that one early.
00:30:36Can't afford another touch here.
00:30:40Still has plenty of time for the Canadian.
00:30:43Look at the speed.
00:30:47Just holding on to that one.
00:30:49How Dub saves his links when he gets into those positions just bewilders me.
00:30:55He had that leg all stretched out to keep that balance.
00:30:58Completely, completely gets into these positions that you don't see anyone else get into.
00:31:04Look how he keeps on bumping to.
00:31:06It's a time to see both pedals.
00:31:08Yes.
00:31:09Screaming out to the crowd.
00:31:14Absolutely amazing stuff.
00:31:17Yes, time for one more link.
00:31:23Oh, that's a really quick switch going from cross legged.
00:31:28Going over the head tube.
00:31:31Into over the head tube.
00:31:33Just one hand.
00:31:35No handed.
00:31:37That's a really awkward position to be in.
00:31:40No margin for error there.
00:31:49That's a really good run for Dub.
00:31:52This is what he wanted.
00:31:55This is what he came for.
00:31:58That's amazing stuff.
00:31:59Contrary to what you say about his aggression on the floor,
00:32:02yesterday we saw him riding with the young...
00:32:10He's pretty fluent in Chinese as well.
00:32:12Yes, yes.
00:32:13Dub spent five years living in China, so he can speak Chinese.
00:32:17And the crowd just...
00:32:30A heartfelt message to the Chinese crowd here.
00:32:41Look at that.
00:32:43Absolutely bewildering run.
00:32:46And even in slow motion, it looks so fast.
00:32:49Yes, I have to slow motion these just to work out what's going on.
00:32:53He's putting his leg over there, over the top tube,
00:32:56putting his leg over there, over the top tube, through his seat,
00:32:59and it makes it so awkward.
00:33:02Guard his foot on the wheel as he wants to transition into the next trick.
00:33:11A little touch of the front wheel on the floor there,
00:33:13and the judges will notice that.
00:33:20A level of difficulty here.
00:33:22And the style.
00:33:24A level of risk.
00:33:28Thank you for having me.
00:33:31Dub has well popularised the pedal junkyard.
00:33:36A little while back as well.
00:33:37And the trouble is he made it look so good
00:33:39that all the riders want to copy him.
00:33:42So he stays ahead, keeps coming up with new manoeuvres.
00:33:49And the level of difficulty is just insane.
00:33:57Perfect control of his bike.
00:34:02Apparently one of the favourites,
00:34:05one of the non-Japanese favourites to make podium.
00:34:09So we'll see if this...
00:34:13...possibly fits.
00:34:16Knees into top spot.
00:34:21So now it looks to be what the next four riders bring to the table.
00:34:27Can they take the pressure?
00:34:31We know Kei Hayakawa is used to delivering under pressure.
00:34:36He's made podium spot a number of times.
00:34:39He's X Games gold medallist.
00:34:4522 years old.
00:34:47Sponsored by Red Bull.
00:34:51He's one of the few riders that we know
00:34:55can take the pressure and deliver.
00:35:03Who will be riding next?
00:35:07We'll have a look at what happened in the first group of riders.
00:35:13All the action from Vado, Dustin, Rio and Jean-William.

00:37:45and welcome back to the piece world series here on the west bond in
00:37:50bond in shanghai we just wrapped up the first group of riders in this finals the first four
00:37:56now we're getting ready for the second group they're getting their last minutes of practice
00:38:02my name is mca gone and i'm joined here by the flatland experts yohan chan
00:38:10yeah i'm so excited to see this group we've got some heavy hitters coming up we've got
00:38:14keo which is the x games gold medalist from 2022 he's going to be bringing
00:38:22some really difficult blender variations into his run we've got cc van berkel from the netherlands
00:38:31he's got his own signature tricks watch out for the cc spin or he stands on top of the top tube
00:38:38takes both hands off an absolute inconceivable position that nobody else has done before
00:38:45we've got tune from thailand an absolute weapon on a bike and you category as well
00:38:54qualifying in first place the bronze medalist from peace montpellier but first
00:39:01kiyo hayakawa the 2022 flatland rider of the year
00:39:08the vice world champion of last year who knows he might have a shot of claiming a gold medal
00:39:17in two months in abu dhabi but first we're here in shanghai
00:39:23check this out he'll be getting into some really difficult positions here
00:39:28up in the wrist element all that jump into double-footed backyard switching it around
00:39:42keo gets himself over the head tube and steps around
00:39:49pulls it for a clean first blink
00:39:59right okay one of the famous for the podium in this contest
00:40:05doing the hardest tricks stepping into that blender
00:40:08yeah that one clean as well collecting the points
00:40:28um
00:40:35the first place of feast montpellier 2022
00:40:40okay we're getting into that incredibly difficult blender stepping out like it's nothing
00:40:46getting into that ice cream spin
00:40:51pivoting the bike round turning over
00:41:00a decade out yes landing cross footed on the pedal perfect
00:41:09no touch run so far for keo
00:41:16it's all incredibly difficult going into a time machine from a manual into blender
00:41:23steps out of it onto the pedal
00:41:28difficult combinations oh yes keo he's going to be so pleased about that's one of his bangers
00:41:37keo's one of those riders who can fill three minutes full of bangers and at this sort of
00:41:43level that's the kind of riding it takes to win the competition
00:41:52oh this one watch out for this one he crosses his legs both pedals
00:42:03that's a perfect run so far
00:42:13um
00:42:18back at the top there decade out
00:42:24that's a no touch with those kind of tricks that is absolutely ridiculous he's going to be so
00:42:30pleased of that full pull run by keo hayakawa i mean he knows how to win a feast contest
00:42:43absolutely no stranger to the podium
00:42:48the other guys are going to have to pull something special out or we're looking at
00:42:52at least i'd say no touch runs to beat that run
00:43:00definitely can't afford more than one touch
00:43:13he rode super well in the qualification so this just goes to show how consistent he can
00:43:19he is by being able to deliver this level of riding
00:43:24spinning at that speed while turning the bars time machine yeah he's
00:43:33so good at getting up there over the head tube and then
00:43:37comboing out of it into more mind-boggling links
00:43:57getting a signature decade to cross-legged landing on the pedal
00:44:01and that's his trick the cross-legged upside down pedal
00:44:08look i'm just comboing out of that trick as well there's no one else doing that trick
00:44:13that's a keo original and it's so awkward as well crossing the legs and standing on both pedals
00:44:22that is killer run out in front of that head tube spinning while on the back wheel this takes
00:44:30years of practice this is not an overnight success let's say yeah absolutely and he's
00:44:36only 22 years old as well so okay
00:44:54that's a great score i wouldn't say unbeatable
00:44:58you category will be looking at that now and he'll be he'll be getting ready
00:45:03all in the house you know what they say joanne if it ain't dutch it ain't much our next rider
00:45:15this guy rode so well yesterday no touch run all with his own signature moves now there's
00:45:21not a lot of riders who can invent their own tricks but cc he's got he's got two or three
00:45:26of them in this link he's ready to get in his zone he has his earbuds plugged in
00:45:31to block out the noise just him and his bike the 2018 master of creativity
00:45:38taking both feet off there that's his signature cc no hand crack packer
00:45:45yes standing on the side of the tires yeah yeah it's a little nice little details i
00:45:52distinguish cc from the rest of the group
00:46:00his foot underneath the down tube onto the pedal
00:46:07so original
00:46:11and holding that with the opposite hand so cool
00:46:16he has another trick as well i wonder if he's going to do where he stands on the shoulder of
00:46:20the forks position it's just no one else is standing on there
00:46:30here we go taking both feet off there
00:46:41perfect run for cc so far
00:46:42look at his composure like he's so relaxed in his zone
00:46:54this man is full focus on a bike
00:47:01still has the big yes oh that's his signature move he really does want to pull this in the
00:47:10contest this is cc's own trick it's an original
00:47:17no one else is doing this yes taking both feet off yes cc that's what he wants to pull
00:47:40oh yeah this this is that trick i was talking about standing on the shoulder of the fork
00:47:47another cc original that's unique stuff i mean he's balancing on parts of the bike that no other
00:47:54riders are even thinking of standing on the side of the tires on the shoulder of the fork that's
00:48:00right that's right i was talking to him last night about it and if you look at a silhouette of his
00:48:04rider you can tell it's cc van berkel and that's what distinguishes him from the other riders
00:48:11it's so difficult to invent your own tricks and cc here is
00:48:18got a plethora of them it's a good run so far cc 10 seconds left
00:48:28let's go to back wheel again for a time machine
00:48:32oh that's a new one for him wow that's absolutely given a new one for the judges
00:48:42now no one was expecting that he didn't do that in the qualifying run
00:48:47or the semi-final part-time middle school teacher but full-time
00:48:53yeah talent on the bike getting a home bet go from dub as well that is astonishing run
00:49:04i think it's a little bit out of time on the last link as well so
00:49:09might not be counted by the judges they've got to be pretty strict on that
00:49:14but it's phenomenal run by cc
00:49:22saying to him last night
00:49:25inventing your own tricks those new positions is the holy grail
00:49:30flatland if you can come up with positions that have not been done before
00:49:38he's also quite the jokester right oh oh such a great sense of humor
00:49:43he's getting the crowd going yesterday look at the position of that foot going underneath the bike
00:49:53very crazy
00:49:57this will be a good score but will it be enough to beat ko
00:50:04it's really difficult to compare the level of difficulty here because there's such different
00:50:09tricks and look that's where he stands on the shoulder of the fork the other foot on the pedal
00:50:22there i mean this is what got him the 2018 title of master of creativity of course yes and this was
00:50:32his prompt to come up with that cc spin as i've been calling it he doesn't actually have a name
00:50:38for himself but i've been saying hey listen no one else does that trick only you everyone
00:50:44everyone knows it's your spin that's going to be on his wikipedia page yeah absolutely and
00:50:50to write to come on come on come on 80.66
00:51:04looks happy with it yeah yeah he had a couple of mistakes in there and that last
00:51:10run as well the last combo was out of time so unfortunately probably not carried by the judges
00:51:20so the current podium kiyohayakawa in first jean-william prevost in second
00:51:28and rio katagiri but will we have maybe an eastern asia podium or will it be an all japanese podium
00:51:40it's a good question tune rode so well yesterday qualifying in second place this guy's a legend
00:51:48he's been pro for like 20 years he's literally put thailand on the map for flatland
00:51:59one of the eldest competitors at this feast shanghai
00:52:03yeah 40 years old he's been pro for 20 years oh look at that
00:52:08man
00:52:12the tune style is just so smooth and quick he could just snap
00:52:19into two tricks and yesterday he rode flawless so let's hope he gets the same thing again today
00:52:29oh straight up pedal yes team
00:52:31really
00:52:35i was talking to one of his teammates earlier and he was saying that tune is so well disciplined
00:52:41always in bed before 10 up at six four hours training and morning
00:52:55so well in control
00:53:02switch
00:53:12yeah nice bar flip out
00:53:16perfect run so far to the bronze medalist from last year's asian bmx championships
00:53:23oh watch this double stemmerang into half packer that's an
00:53:34incredibly difficult combo bewildering how he drops into that half packer
00:53:40oh
00:53:48this is gonna cost tune some points unfortunately absolutely that's his binder link
00:53:56but still 45 seconds on the clock he's getting the energy from the crowd from the riders
00:54:03oh
00:54:25but still a rather impressive feat to be here in the finals of the feast world series
00:54:33yeah the level here is so high professional flatland riding these days it's absolutely tough
00:54:41what oh going for the 540 bar there i think it landed at 450 which is
00:54:50exactly what you don't want it to land at but
00:54:53i
00:54:57started off really strong
00:55:04let's see what the score is
00:55:10tune had some bad luck in his qualification run as well in practice he blew out his rim
00:55:15and it exploded the side of it just peeled straight off
00:55:19luckily one of his teammates lent him his front wheel
00:55:23there's a lot of riders think that bmx part puts the most let's say stress and fatigue on the bike
00:55:30but it's actually flatland bmx yeah yeah the side impact that you get from dropping pegs on the floor
00:55:37repeatedly and the stress that it puts on on wheels when the wheels tilted sideways is
00:55:47it means you've got to replace your parts quite frequently and you have that wheel for less than a
00:55:52year so it was surprising to see it peel the way it did
00:56:13tune's been a legend in the pro flatland circuit
00:56:17for a long time and 20 years maybe he's been riding pro since 2007
00:56:24and he looks pretty much the same as what he did in 2007 doesn't look like he's aged
00:56:37a couple of mistakes there from tune
00:56:43next up we have
00:56:47favorite for the win yu katagiri had some absolutely mystical runs in qualification
00:56:57the 2023 rider of the year the bronze medalist from fils montpellier
00:57:05and the number one qualifier from the semi-finals from yesterday yu katagiri
00:57:13they call him the back wheel assassin and he's always associated with very alpha sounding
00:57:19adjectives but if you watch his riding you'll see why he is an absolute weapon on a bike
00:57:30it's not normally what he would start off with
00:57:33with
00:57:37but this guy when he's riding he looks like he's
00:57:41in another dimension some of the corrections he does
00:57:49mid trick
00:57:52oh mistake there early on from katagiri
00:58:02a little bit lighter so we can do his signature white flips
00:58:17and into the pedal and then onto the peg
00:58:22you can just do these in line oh saves it jumping on his bike on the side of his bike
00:58:33that was a big leap as well from the peg of a bike flip onto the pedal that's one of his big
00:58:38banger moves didn't go quite intended as he'd planned the judges will notice
00:58:44they had to lay the bike down doesn't count as a full step off
00:58:56full 360 bike flip there
00:58:58that's a high stakes high reward trick absolutely yeah really upping the level of risk here
00:59:07oh two touches
00:59:13normally i would say yu katagiri is the first to actually get that trick consistent enough to pull
00:59:18that trick consistent enough to pull it at pro level competition
00:59:24yes sticks the landing that is absolutely incredible normally you
00:59:31don't see people go for it the third time if they crash it twice
00:59:44this is uncharacteristic of katagiri
00:59:48not the flawless run that we would be expecting from the 2023 and 2024 rider of the year from
00:59:54japan yeah and we saw two amazing runs in qualification but always harder to ride last
01:00:04because you've got the expectations as well exactly all the pressure
01:00:12but he still keeps putting on a show for the crowd here in shanghai
01:00:16oh it's that pedal drunk yard
01:00:21that's the flip out of this oh it's a flaky manual what oh my god that is an unbelievable switch
01:00:34yeah that's uh i would love to have seen that pulled
01:00:40yeah i don't think that's gonna be enough no unfortunately but still quite the year that he has had
01:00:51we've seen some magic from yu katagiri in this contest he's been bewildering
01:00:59he's like it's like he rides in a different sort of time dimension when he rides his tricks but
01:01:04unfortunately we didn't see that in the final in this round
01:01:09they'll be disappointed with that but no doubt he's gonna be back
01:01:14might have been the wind picking up here in shanghai that messed up his run
01:01:21but who knows he'll have another run in two months at the world championships
01:01:29at the urban cycling world championships in abu dhabi
01:01:32that's the week i think before christmas
01:01:40pedaling back to the peg it's bewildering
01:01:48yeah almost a little bit difficult riding last because you've got the longest amount of time
