00:00:00Go ahead and use that. Take your time. Blink as much as you can too. There you go. Blink.
00:00:16I want you to stand there and give him a warning.
00:00:20So if you give him a warning, I want you to stand there.
00:00:27Look at me.
00:00:30Where's Bill Nonsense when we need him?
00:00:34No worries. Take your time.
00:00:37It's only been a minute into this.
00:00:40You've got plenty of time, buddy. We're just going to make sure you're good, okay?
00:00:45Uh-huh.
00:00:53He was saying he needed to wipe the Vaseline from his eyes when I was pushed in there.
00:00:58First of all, is she giving him a towel, not a gauze wrap?
00:01:02It's all used. Like I used Kleenex to wipe his face off.
00:01:08You want to dry? Yeah, please.
00:01:10We're about two minutes in.
00:01:12Thank you. Somebody get this man a dry napkin, please.
00:01:15He just needs a towel.
00:01:18That's determined by us. But you have up to five. Yes, that is correct.
00:01:23There we go.
00:01:25Wipe your eyes, man!
00:01:28That was a cold one.
00:01:35Here's another look at it. Again, it's the right eye of Smotherman
00:01:41that got the worst of it from the index finger on Jake Hadley.
00:01:44That's an unfortunate part of it.
00:01:46There's a minute and 25 seconds left in the round when they resume.
00:01:51There you go. How long has it been, though?
00:01:54Probably about two and a half minutes.
00:02:00Believe me, it takes a lot longer than you think it does.
00:02:07Look at me.
00:02:17Look up.
00:02:21All right. Is it okay? It's okay, yeah.
00:02:25Keep the vaselines out? Yeah, yeah.
00:02:35You've got 1.45 left. Okay.
00:02:38All right.
00:02:403.20.
00:02:42So you've got 1.40.
00:02:44I need just a second, please.
00:02:46Take your time. Take your time.
00:02:49Okay.
00:02:59Unfortunately, yes.
00:03:05It's looking better. It's looking better.
00:03:07Yeah, it's getting there.
00:03:09All right.
00:03:11If they continue, just to clarify rules,
00:03:14this would be deemed a no contest
00:03:16because it is in the second round.
00:03:18If it went into the third round,
00:03:20they could use the scorecards.
00:03:22They could score.
00:03:24You were warned before the fight.
00:03:26You were warned once.
00:03:28You were warned a second time.
00:03:30Verbally warned.
00:03:32One point.
00:03:34So that's big.
00:03:36That's really big.
00:03:38One point.
00:03:41You were warned twice and before the fight.
00:03:43Okay? So...
00:03:45Okay? Ready?
00:03:47Now Jake Hadley fighting an uphill battle.
00:03:49But just to clear that up,
00:03:51if you go into a third round and a fight ends that way,
00:03:53they can use the scorecards at that point.
00:03:55But no need for that now.
00:03:57We're back under action.
00:03:59Finally, a takedown there from Hadley.
00:04:01Interesting. And he gets it.
00:04:03But let's see. Smotherman doing a really nice job
00:04:05not allowing him control.
00:04:07This is the back take we've seen
00:04:09from Hadley so many times.
00:04:11But he's aware of it.
00:04:13And he's got a brand new fresh gas tank as well.
00:04:15Three, four minutes in the middle of a round.
00:04:17This is basically a brand new fight now.
00:04:19It really is.
00:04:21Four minutes of recovery?
00:04:23You never even get that in between rounds.
00:04:25It's like having a first round all over again.
00:04:27So now the third round
00:04:29almost becomes the first round.
00:04:31There's no analytics.
00:04:33We don't know what's going to happen in that.
00:04:35Nobody looks more tired than the other.
00:04:37Both guys going to be fully recovered.
00:04:41They just had that long break.
00:04:43Only fight for a little bit.
00:04:45Then get another full minute.
00:04:47And because Hadley's down now a point,
00:04:49I would assume he's going to look for a takedown
00:04:51in the third round and try to get the submission.
00:04:53He might need a finish because Smotherman
00:04:55outstruck him in the first round.
00:04:57Obviously the point taken here in round two.
00:04:59So it might be a sprint five minutes
00:05:01in which Hadley has
00:05:03that amount of time to end the fight.
00:05:05I would assume he's going to look for a takedown
00:05:07in the third round and try to get the submission.
00:05:09He might need a finish because Smotherman
00:05:11outstruck him in the first round.
00:05:13Obviously the point taken here in round two.
00:05:15So it might be a sprint five minutes
00:05:17in which Hadley has
00:05:19that amount of time to end the fight.

00:05:45Final round.
00:05:47Heated to start as we expected.
00:05:51How about Smotherman
00:05:53showing some aggression.
00:05:55Not backing off one bit.
00:05:57Not staying safe.
00:05:59Not backing off one bit.
00:06:01Not staying safe.
00:06:13Hadley in
00:06:15on a takedown.
00:06:23Adrian Yanez in the corner
00:06:25of Smotherman saying
00:06:27you're doing great, but we can get this guy
00:06:29out of here. Really put a stamp on your
00:06:31arrival to the UFC Phantomweight division.
00:06:35Landed some good strikes
00:06:37in those exchanges early in the rounds.
00:06:41To get that hand back, Hadley's going to have to
00:06:43dive down to a double there.
00:06:47He's got to get that hand back
00:06:49or he can't finish the takedown.
00:06:53Back to center.
00:06:55Hand lands for Hadley.
00:07:01Smotherman combinations.
00:07:05Pushing the pace here. That's what he needs to do.
00:07:25Nice one-two
00:07:27there from Hadley.
00:07:55An isolated kick there from Hadley.
00:07:57Dom, he hasn't done that a lot.
00:07:59You were saying in round two that might be his key.
00:08:01Yeah, I think that Hadley just needs to be first
00:08:03and he really needs to want this
00:08:05more than anybody in the world right now
00:08:07because after that eye poke, you just have to be
00:08:09extra crazy with either
00:08:11trying to get the finish, forward pressure,
00:08:13combinations, something
00:08:15that's doing much more than your opponent
00:08:17after what the fights look like so far.
00:08:19Right now, staying on his heels, moving back.
00:08:21It's just not going to work.
00:08:23Staying on his heels, moving back.
00:08:25It's just not quite enough. He's got to move Smotherman back.
00:08:29Instead it's Smotherman using
00:08:31repeated shots to the body.
00:08:33Now they swing big
00:08:35along the fence as we approach two minutes to go.
00:08:37You know, and I know Hadley has
00:08:39the gas tank. It's just a matter of tactics.
00:08:41He's got to know right now, you're on your back foot,
00:08:43you're not winning the fight here
00:08:45for the judges, the way it looks to the judges.
00:08:47Got to do something.
00:08:49Smotherman.
00:08:51And as time runs out,
00:08:53you know, that's more likely
00:08:55to not be a submission.
00:08:59Smotherman has landed 44
00:09:01strikes to the body.
00:09:05Oh, that knee was vicious.
00:09:07That was very good timing.
00:09:09Strike hand position.
00:09:17Good left hand
00:09:19hurt Smotherman a little bit on that one.
00:09:21Yeah, his legs
00:09:23got a little wobbly there. Couldn't tell if that was just
00:09:25a misstep
00:09:27or another good left hand. Hadley needs
00:09:29to follow that up a little bit more. He's throwing
00:09:31those things and he's landing them. He needs to keep
00:09:33going combinations after some.
00:09:39Stop! Time!
00:09:43Now the question is, that's his second one.
00:09:45Does he get a point deducted?
00:09:47Oh, it was the other one, right?
00:09:49Hadley landed a low blow.
00:09:51So they're even on that.
00:09:53Yeah, the high poke
00:09:55had the most effects.
00:09:57Sweet.
00:09:59I know
00:10:01it's not on purpose, but you're still
00:10:03responsible for your efforts.
00:10:10Yeah, I'm
00:10:12ready. What time?
00:10:14Already, yeah. You're good? Yeah.
00:10:16Be careful.
00:10:18Time in. Hadley
00:10:20ready to go with one
00:10:22minute on the clock.
00:10:25Man, and it makes the fight so weird
00:10:27with all these stops and goes. You just never
00:10:29have that in practice. So it throws off the rhythm
00:10:31of the fight also.
00:10:35Yeah, there's no flow when that kind of
00:10:37happens. When all these fouls start happening,
00:10:39you just don't get into that flow state.
00:10:43Fingers!
00:10:45Warm up, cool down.
00:10:47Yeah, it's not fun
00:10:49with the stops and goes.
00:10:57Oh!
00:10:59Nice left hand.
00:11:01Smotherman on shaky
00:11:03legs there during that exchange.
00:11:05Yeah, Hadley needs a nice lead there.
00:11:07I mean, that's a big statement to hurt him
00:11:09right there like he just did. Only 20 seconds
00:11:11though. He's got to go for it. He needs to keep going.
00:11:13The clock is the enemy in the final ten. Hadley's really
00:11:15got to press forward. Yeah, he needs to throw safety
00:11:17in the wind and get that finish.
00:11:19Keep going.
00:11:24Three rounds in the books.
00:11:26Cameron Smotherman on short
00:11:28notice
00:11:30comes to Las Vegas and gives Jake
00:11:32Hadley everything he can handle.
00:11:34We'll get the official decision next.
00:12:04Yeah.
00:12:34We're headed back to the Great
00:12:36White North in two weeks. Edmonton
00:12:38plays host to the Octagon Action.
00:12:40Former flyweight champ Brandon Moreno
00:12:42battles Amir Al-Bazi
00:12:44who's won six straight fights, plus
00:12:46Rose Namajunas and Aaron Blanchfield
00:12:48in a critical flyweight showdown.
00:12:50The entire night is on ESPN+.
00:12:52Main card is at 8 Eastern.
00:13:05All right. And now for the official
00:13:07decision brought to you by DAV, Disabled
00:13:09American Veterans. Keeping our promise to
00:13:11America's veterans, we send
00:13:13it in to Joe Martinez.
00:13:17Well, fine fans, after three rounds, we go to
00:13:19the scorecards. The totals are
00:13:2130-26, 29-27,
00:13:23and 29-27.
00:13:25All for your winner
00:13:27by unanimous decision,
00:13:29the babyface
00:13:31killer, Cameron
00:13:34Smotherman!
00:13:37I'm here with your winner, Cameron Smotherman.
00:13:39Cameron, congratulations.
00:13:41Welcome to the UFC.
00:13:43You took this on short notice. You came
00:13:45in here. After the Contender Series,
00:13:47you went and you rattled off some wins. How does it feel
00:13:49to finally be a part of this UFC roster?
00:13:51Man, this, I mean,
00:13:53I'm sure it's the case for a lot of people, but
00:13:55it's been so fucking hard to get here, and
00:13:57I wanted to quit so many times,
00:13:59and I tried to quit so many times,
00:14:01but you see all these people, how they're
00:14:03supporting me, and
00:14:05man, I'm here, and I'm upset.
00:14:07I really wanted to finish. I wanted
00:14:09the $50,000, but
00:14:11you know, the thing I'm learning
00:14:13is this is about a journey, and
00:14:15I just, I want to do
00:14:17better. I want to provide for my family. I want to
00:14:19know how to
00:14:21keep growing as a person and as a
00:14:23fighter, and I just need
00:14:25help. I need people to show me how to do it,
00:14:27and
00:14:29you know, it's... Hold on, I'm about to start crying.
00:14:31Well, listen, one of the...
00:14:33I'm in the fucking UFC, bro. I'm in the fucking
00:14:35UFC. I just won. You're here, dude. You did it.
00:14:37I just won in a fucking day and a half.
00:14:39And Cameron, one thing I wanted to ask
00:14:41you about, right? You come in here, you get that
00:14:43UFC debut, and there's eye pokes, there's
00:14:45groin strikes. Was it difficult for you to
00:14:47find your rhythm and to find the timing
00:14:49of the strikes because of all the starting
00:14:51and stopping that you have? Yeah, I mean,
00:14:53obviously, it's not ideal for anyone, but
00:14:55fuck, dude, I fucking
00:14:57won, bro. I'm in the UFC, bro.
00:14:59Oh, fuck. Dude,
00:15:01yeah, man,
00:15:03shit. Thank you to Harry Garcia.
00:15:05Thanks to Jason House. Thanks to everyone who
00:15:07has believed in me right now, bro.
00:15:09Man, dude, they didn't
00:15:11want me, bro. I'm here now, bro. You're here, man,
00:15:13because you earned it. You went and you rattled
00:15:15off some wins. Congratulations on
00:15:17a successful UFC debut.
00:15:19Cameron Smotherman, ladies and gentlemen.
00:15:23It's as if it didn't hit him
00:15:25the whole fight week.
00:15:27The introductions, the walks,
00:15:29wearing the gloves.
00:15:31It hit him when he was talking to Paul Felder.
00:15:35And as a huge
00:15:37underdog, what a great moment for Cameron
00:15:39Smotherman. Welcome to the
00:15:41UFC, young man.
00:15:43What a win.
00:15:45Jamal Hill, sweet hat
00:15:47for the former light heavyweight
00:15:49UFC champion who's in the house
00:15:51here in Las Vegas. 2024
00:15:53has been a career year for Charles Johnson.
00:15:55Tonight he becomes the first member of the
00:15:57UFC roster to fight four times in
00:15:592024. And not only has he
00:16:01stayed busy, he's won all three
00:16:03of his previous bouts.
00:16:05None more impressive than a comeback knockout
00:16:07in his last outing in July.
00:16:09He takes on the always exciting Sumo Darji,
00:16:11always remembered for an epic back and forth
00:16:13clash with Matt Schnell two years
00:16:15ago. Seventh UFC fight as he tries
00:16:17to get back on track in his
00:16:19first fight of the year. Flyweights are set
00:16:21to take center stage, coming up next.
00:16:51Yeah.
00:17:22Catch the official UFC 308
00:17:24weigh-in show from Abu Dhabi. Join
00:17:26Daniel Cormier, Michael Bisping, Paul Felder

00:17:32UFC 308 pay-per-view
00:17:34from Abu Dhabi. It's live Friday
00:17:36morning here in Las Vegas.
00:17:51It's 1 a.m. Eastern
00:17:53time. So
00:17:55overnight Thursday into Friday. YouTube,
00:17:57Facebook and Fight Pass.
00:17:59Who knows what fun they
00:18:01will have in the Emirates.
00:18:03Perhaps a new entry to the
00:18:05flyweight rankings will happen next
00:18:07if the pride of St. Louis
00:18:09can extend his winning streak tonight.
00:18:11Charles Johnson
00:18:13has been one of the busiest fighters on the
00:18:15UFC roster this year. And while being
00:18:17active is one thing, winning
00:18:19is all the inner G has done.
00:18:21And tonight, he seeks his fourth of the year
00:18:23against Sumo Darji.
00:18:25After years of paying his
00:18:27dues, Charles Johnson has finally
00:18:29hit his stride in the UFC.
00:18:31And as he preps to battle China's
00:18:33Sumo Darji, he's in the best
00:18:35form of his career, thanks to his
00:18:37wins over Azzat Maxim,
00:18:39Jake Hadley and Joshua
00:18:41Vann. But the work isn't done yet
00:18:43for the inner G, who hopes
00:18:45a fourth straight victory will put him in the
00:18:47rankings at 125 pounds.
00:18:49Standing in his way will be
00:18:51the Tibetan Eagle, a hard-hitting
00:18:53veteran whose fight of the night with Matt Schnell
00:18:55and 44-second knockout
00:18:57of Malcolm Gordon has cemented
00:18:59his place as one of the division's
00:19:01most dynamic performers.
00:19:03Coming up next,
00:19:05Charles Inner G
00:19:07Johnson beats
00:19:09the Tibetan Eagle
00:19:11Sumo Darji.
00:19:17Big smile on the face of Sumo Darji
00:19:19in his seventh UFC outing
00:19:21coming here in Las Vegas.
00:19:23He became the first fighter
00:19:25representing Tibet in the UFC.
00:19:27He is fiercely proud of that
00:19:29heritage. 13 wins by knockout
00:19:31and 16 pro victories. Paul,
00:19:33that'll get you noticed.
00:19:35The epic fight with Matt Schnell
00:19:37that was back and forth two years ago
00:19:39that you were on the call for is going to
00:19:41live rent-free in fight fans' minds.
00:19:43Big smile on the face of Sumo Darji
00:19:45that'll get you noticed.
00:19:47The epic fight with Matt Schnell
00:19:49that was back and forth two years ago
00:19:51that you were on the call for is going to
00:19:53live rent-free in fight fans' minds forever.
00:19:55If he can string together some consistency,
00:19:57first appearance of 2024.
00:19:59This year has fought one time
00:20:01basically in each of his years on the roster.
00:20:03More reps will lead to
00:20:05probably better performances.
00:20:07More reps and just getting comfortable
00:20:09inside of the octagon is so key
00:20:11for these athletes. You want to be
00:20:13get into the rankings of a division.
00:20:15Because listen, when Sumo Darji is on point,
00:20:17his striking is phenomenal.
00:20:19He's very long and rangy,
00:20:21although not gonna be that much of a case
00:20:23in this particular matchup with Charles Johnson.
00:20:25So that is what's gonna intrigue me,
00:20:27is how does he deal with somebody
00:20:29with the similar length that he has?
00:20:31Because his straight punches are very accurate, very sharp.
00:20:34He likes to sit back and really counter strike
00:20:37and draw guys in.
00:20:38He can be aggressive if he needs to be.
00:20:40But he's gonna also have to be wary
00:20:43of the takedowns from Charles Johnson,
00:20:45who can mix things up really well.
00:20:47And again, it's good to see Sumo Darji back,
00:20:49but we'd like to see him more often.
00:20:51Yeah, it's no secret, 11 first round finishes
00:20:53and 13 knockouts, this man wants to stand up.
00:20:55That's his style.
00:20:56But what makes him tricky about stand up
00:20:58is how finesseful and smooth he is on his feet.
00:21:00He almost floats around the octagon.
00:21:02He floats in and out of exchanges
00:21:04and he's very hard to find.
00:21:05And he's a southpaw, crafty southpaw,
00:21:07with a very bladed stance.
00:21:09So it's awkward to get a read right off the bat,
00:21:11but if anybody can do it,
00:21:12it's the wrestling striking Charles Johnson.
00:21:28Oh, big smile for Charles Johnson
00:21:32as he takes a look at his baby girl here in Las Vegas.
00:21:36He stayed busy, all of a sudden
00:21:37this is his 10th UFC fight.
00:21:39He made his debut in July of 2022.
00:21:41So just over two years later,
00:21:44he's a grizzled veteran at this point.
00:21:45Charlie Arnold joins us octagon side.
00:21:47He's always bringing the energy.
00:21:49Always bringing the energy.
00:21:50And it's especially interesting
00:21:53given what he's been through recently,
00:21:55because he actually just moved his whole family
00:21:58down to Florida.
00:21:58They're in the Orlando area now.
00:22:00So he could train at Fusion XL Performance
00:22:02under Julian Williams.
00:22:03But it wasn't exactly guys,
00:22:05the warm welcome that to Johnson's expected
00:22:08because they moved right before
00:22:10Hurricane Helene and Milton hit.
00:22:12Obviously this affected his training
00:22:13because his gym had to shut down for days at a time.
00:22:16So what did he do?
00:22:17Well, he ordered some mats.
00:22:18He put them inside of his house
00:22:20and was running drills from there.
00:22:22He said, some guys came through Adam Trotter, Phil Rowe.
00:22:25They came through not just to work with them,
00:22:26but also to hold the pads.
00:22:27And it's been quite the year for Johnson.
00:22:30Brendan, you mentioned,
00:22:30he's the first to fight four times in 2024.
00:22:33He's actually aiming even after this
00:22:36for one more to cap off the year.
00:22:37All right, there's time on the clock
00:22:38and there's flyweights that are in action.
00:22:40I'm surprised he hasn't cracked the top 15 yet.
00:22:42If he wins tonight,
00:22:43I think he's got a number next to his name coming soon.
00:22:45I was talking to him.
00:22:46He really just, at this point,
00:22:47he just wants to get through contract,
00:22:49get big wins and keep moving forward
00:22:51and fight as much as he can.
00:22:52He knows that he's going to have to have some patience
00:22:55to start calling out some of the higher guys,
00:22:57the guys in the top 10.
00:22:57But he did say that after this,
00:22:59if he goes out there
00:23:00and has a really dominant win over Sumo Darji,
00:23:03he's going to start calling for those rankings.
00:23:05Yeah, my favorite thing about Charles Johnson
00:23:07is his short memory.
00:23:08I mean, win or loss,
00:23:09this guy has the same confidence every single fight,
00:23:12no matter what he goes into.
00:23:14And he's not faking it.
00:23:15He knows, even after,
00:23:16I saw after one of his losses,
00:23:18he came in and looked exactly the same
00:23:20as you're seeing right now.
00:23:21It was a lesson for him.
00:23:22It wasn't something that he stood on
00:23:24and he let break him down.
00:23:25And now he's showing up tonight
00:23:26against a very, very sharp Sumo Darji.
00:23:30And we'll see how he fares against him.
00:23:34Wow.
00:23:35Three more bouts from Las Vegas,
00:23:37including this one at Flyweight,
00:23:39between Charles Johnson,
00:23:40who is five years older than his counterpart, Sumo Darji.
00:23:43Johnson stands one inch taller at 5'9".
00:23:46Sumo Darji holds a two inch edge and reach,
00:23:48but it is Johnson, the betting favorite.
00:23:51Here's Joe Martinez.
00:23:53And all fight fans,
00:23:54we are set to go with the next fight tonight.
00:23:55Three rounds in the UFC Flyweight division.
00:23:59Introducing to you first,
00:24:00fighting out of the blue corner,
00:24:02he's a striker standing five feet, eight inches tall.
00:24:05Weighing in at the Flyweight limit, 126 pounds.
00:24:08His record stands at 16 victories with six defeats.
00:24:11Fighting out of Sichuan, China,
00:24:13here is the Tibetan Eagle, Sumo Darji.
00:24:22And across the octagon,
00:24:24his opponent fighting out of the red corner,
00:24:26a Taijutsu practitioner standing five feet, nine inches tall.
00:24:30He too weighed in 126 pounds
00:24:33and holds an equal record of 16 victories with six defeats.
00:24:37He is the pride of St. Louis, Charles Energy Johnson!
00:24:45Let's go, Joe!
00:24:46And your referee in charge is Mark Smith.
00:24:51No, watch legs.
00:24:54Jamal Hill, a training partner,
00:24:56longtime friend of Charles Johnson.
00:24:58His wife, Caitlin, and his daughter, Gia,
00:25:01in attendance with his family.
00:25:04Charles Johnson actually found out inside the octagon
00:25:07after he beat Jimmy Flip that he would be a girl dad.
00:25:11Baby Gia's here to watch dad fight.
00:25:14Johnson's in the purple
00:25:15and blitzing forward on Sumo Darji right away.
00:25:17Smart approach from Charles Johnson.
00:25:20Strike, try to blend in those strikes
00:25:22to get to that takedown,
00:25:23but just, you gotta get on somebody like Sumo Darji.
00:25:25Pressure him, try to wear him out early.
00:25:27Take away that snap on the end of his punches that he has.
00:25:32When he's lost, it's been by submission
00:25:34or ground and pound and just being out-grappled.
00:25:36Sumo Darji, I mean.
00:25:37And Charles Johnson has a long wrestling background,
00:25:41so it doesn't surprise me that he's gonna use that first
00:25:44and then link his striking to that.
00:25:49Nice work there, Sumo Darji.
00:25:51Trying to get out into the space,
00:25:53but Charles Johnson just not letting him go.
00:25:57Some dirty boxing finish that exchange.
00:26:16Look how slick Sumo Darji is
00:26:18at getting out of the way of strikes.
00:26:27He's got a 300-inch.
00:26:31Chin down, all the way, go, go.
00:26:33No, no, you can't go straight up in the air.
00:26:35You're gonna finish him with a shot over the top.
00:26:38His head's straight up in the air.
00:26:39You go right on the top here.
00:26:42Slide, boy.
00:26:44Slide.
00:26:45Slide.
00:26:48Effective calf kick from Sumo Darji.
00:26:50And that's the thing about being a southpaw
00:26:52is you don't usually see calf kicks a lot
00:26:54because most of the guys you're fighting are conventional,
00:26:57so the calf kick's not there.
00:26:58So Charles Johnson facing Sumo Darji
00:27:01in that southpaw stance.
00:27:02You can see Sumo Darji has a little bit more time
00:27:05with the kicks, and he's timing them super well.
00:27:08Immerse yourself in the world of combat sports

00:27:16and so much more.
00:27:17It's available within the UFC app.
00:27:21Now watch how Sumo Darji overcommits
00:27:23with that left hand, though,
00:27:24because just a second ago he did so,
00:27:26and that's where Charles Johnson can capitalize his style.
00:27:28Whenever you get Sumo Darji to commit,
00:27:31there's a wrestling transition
00:27:33or a long combination transition off that.
00:27:48Just see how tricky Sumo Darji is,
00:27:51and he finds awesome timing to pick his strikes
00:27:54and when he's going to land them.
00:28:01Johnson checks the kick on his way in.
00:28:07Southpaw stance for both.
00:28:08Johnson trying to land a big uppercut.
00:28:11Yeah, that's nice work.
00:28:13That's what he's got to try to do.
00:28:14Cut those angles, get inside,
00:28:16get Sumo Darji up against the fence, dirty box.
00:28:25Nice job.
00:28:26Guard your jaws! Guard your jaws!
00:28:29Head position for Johnson
00:28:31as he applies pressure along the fence.
00:28:33Ninety seconds to go in round one.
00:28:38Perhaps looking to employ some of his wrestling background.
00:28:40He was an all-state high school wrestler in Missouri.
00:28:44Head on the floor.
00:28:47Go back, go back.
00:28:50Get out.
00:28:51Get out.
00:28:54Sumo Darji looking for those elbows off the break.
00:29:01Takedown defense holding up so far for Sumo Darji.
00:29:04What we're not seeing out of Charles Johnson
00:29:06that we usually see is his teeth kicks.
00:29:08His teeth kicks work like his jabs,
00:29:09and right now Sumo Darji's getting the range
00:29:12and keeping his rhythm by using his own jab
00:29:14against a fellow Southpaw.
00:29:17Deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, yeah!
00:29:23I believe that loud voice is Jamal Hill watching along.
00:29:26He's standing right behind us.
00:29:36Johnson applying pressure.
00:29:37Thirty to go in the round now.
00:29:40Sumo Darji doing a good job to keep the feet.
00:29:49Nasty feints from Sumo Darji,
00:29:51and then he moves, slides out of the way.
00:29:53I mean, he's just slick.
00:29:55You can see how slick he is on the outside,
00:29:57and he's giving Johnson a tough time trying to find him.
00:30:01Johnson can get him on the fence.
00:30:02He does his best work.
00:30:04Oh, guys, Brandon has jammed into the final seconds
00:30:07of round one.
00:30:08Second round coming up.
00:30:10Sumo!
00:30:38Sumo!
00:31:09Check out ESPN's MMA show.
00:31:11It's Good Guy, Bad Guy with Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen.
00:31:14It's available on YouTube, ESPN2 and ESPN+.
00:31:17You can also listen to it where you get podcasts.
00:31:19You see it, Chael, every Monday and Thursday.
00:31:21Don't miss it.
00:31:24So the corner of Charles Johnson includes Julian Williams
00:31:26out of his new home of Fusion XL in Orlando
00:31:28and Joaquin Rodriguez out of his former gym,
00:31:32Murcielago MMA up in Michigan.
00:31:35On the other side, Sumo Darji cornered by Uriah Favre
00:31:38out of Team Alpha Male.
00:31:39He's been a host of Chinese fighters
00:31:41that have come through Sacramento in recent years,
00:31:43including Song Yedong.
00:31:47Paul, you hit pads with Joaquin Rodriguez the other day.
00:31:49I mean, what did you notice about him coaching Charles
00:31:52and kind of the advice that he was giving you?
00:31:56I mean, we were just skating.
00:31:58We were just skating.
00:31:59We were just skating.
00:32:02I mean, we were just sticking to the basics
00:32:04and working on rotation,
00:32:06working on really snapping at the end of your punches.
00:32:10So for Charles, he's such a unique fighter
00:32:13that they really just want him aware
00:32:16that Sumo Darji's trying to sit back.
00:32:18You've got to do certain things to draw out those strikes.
00:32:20I think that's what Charles is going to do.
00:32:21And I agree with what Don was saying, too,
00:32:23that I think for him to get back to that funky,
00:32:25Sumo Darji is, you know, he's a flyweight.
00:32:29He's pretty thin throughout the body.
00:32:30I want to be testing that with my front kicks.
00:32:38Sumo Darji has definitely worked on his takedown defense.
00:32:41And it seems that in the past fights,
00:32:43he's learned the lessons, made the adjustments,
00:32:45because Charles Johnson has a grappling background.
00:32:48He cannot get this man to the ground.
00:32:49And you could see how dangerous Sumo Darji is
00:32:52with every minute that goes by.
00:32:53He's getting slicker and slicker,
00:32:55making more and more reads,
00:32:56harder and harder to take down.
00:32:58And he's just very smooth on his feet.
00:33:11There's a front kick up the middle from Johnson.
00:33:13Yeah, we've seen three front kicks out of him this round,
00:33:15and it's helped, but he's just having a hard time
00:33:18getting his hands on Sumo Darji.
00:33:24Clubbing overhand right from Sumo Darji
00:33:26who tried to land it again.
00:33:36Johnson seeming to get a little bit frustrated
00:33:38here in the second.
00:33:40There's a shot.
00:33:42That was a nice shot,
00:33:43but you could just see how calm Sumo Darji is as well.
00:33:45He's very calm, very collected.
00:33:47He sees everything that Charles Johnson's throwing right now.
00:33:51What's worked best for Johnson is pressing him on the fence.
00:33:54He's got to get him to the fence.
00:34:05Fronting left there from Sumo Darji,
00:34:07but Johnson got his hand up.
00:34:24Nice throw.
00:34:29Swing and a miss.
00:34:31Johnson didn't miss on the return as he chased him down.
00:34:41Nasty exchanges.
00:34:44Seeing Johnson get some of the best combinations
00:34:47right there on the fence.
00:34:49That is where he has hurt him the most.
00:34:52Charles Johnson hammering away.
00:34:54Sumo Darji's trying to survive.
00:34:59A lot of time left.
00:35:00Thought about swinging to the back.
00:35:02Instead, he goes back to the ground and bound.
00:35:05What a job for Johnson.
00:35:07Not getting frustrated, keeping the pressure,
00:35:09getting him to the fence where he finds his own home.
00:35:18Darji coming close with an up kick.
00:35:22Johnson now to the side.
00:35:24Not all the way there yet.
00:35:25He's got a wide angle threat from Sumo Darji.
00:35:28Charles does a nice job of cutting him,
00:35:30but his arm is not out yet.
00:35:32That is locked in.
00:35:34He uses it to sweep.
00:35:35Let's see if he can finish.
00:35:3645 seconds to go.
00:35:38Johnson has escaped.
00:35:42Sumo Darji to the back now.
00:35:44What a recovery from Sumo Darji.
00:35:46He's hurt bad.
00:35:48He's grounded.
00:35:52The warning is for Sumo Darji to not fire a knee
00:35:55to the head of Johnson.
00:36:00Now he's back to his feet as they continue to clinch.
00:36:06Johnson forcing the takedown.
00:36:08What a sweep by Sumo Darji.
00:36:12And you can see the work he's done in his grappling.
00:36:14Even though it hasn't been perfect,
00:36:16he has improved a ton.
00:36:18Look at these scrambles.
00:36:22A crazy end to round two.
00:36:24Sets the stage for the final round next.
00:36:34Breathe.
00:36:51Breathe.
00:37:21Breathe.
00:37:32All right, let's take a look.
00:37:33There's that right hand that rocks Sumo Darji.
00:37:36Then it was just all-out chaos for the rest of this round.
00:37:40It looked like Johnson was going to get a finish,
00:37:43and Sumo Darji just showing his grit,
00:37:45showing his toughness,
00:37:46showing a better version of himself
00:37:47than we've seen in a while.
00:37:50Almost got an arm bar.
00:37:51Almost had a triangle.
00:37:53Spinning hook kicks here to start the third.
00:37:55When you got Sumo Darji in the open,
00:37:57he is a problem.
00:37:58But if you can corral him to the fence,
00:38:00you have some hope.
00:38:02But he's almost gotten more confidence
00:38:04after that exchange with Ruslan.
00:38:06And now he's coming forward.
00:38:07But as long as Johnson can get Sumo Darji's butt on the fence,
00:38:11and we've seen multiple times,
00:38:12that's where he gets ahead.
00:38:16Sumo Darji still dangerous.
00:38:18Perhaps the fresher fighter into the third round.
00:38:21Johnson breathing heavy.
00:38:22And that's impressive,
00:38:24because you've got to know the accolades
00:38:26behind Charles Johnson,
00:38:28his track background,
00:38:29his wrestling background.
00:38:30To come in here and have somebody like Sumo Darji,
00:38:33who I agree with you,
00:38:34seems to be slightly fresher.
00:38:35Charles seemed to be struggling.
00:38:37But you've got to remember,
00:38:38that's because he went so hard for that finish.
00:38:40And that's why that can be so dangerous sometimes.
00:38:42If a guy can recover from it and come back,
00:38:45then you're feeling exhausted
00:38:48from everything you've put out there.
00:38:52The level at Flyweight has risen huge
00:38:55in the last couple of months.
00:38:57I mean, the guys,
00:38:58so many knockout artists.
00:38:59And look how slick these guys are on the feet tonight,
00:39:01putting on quite a show.
00:39:05And again, Johnson riding three victories in 2024
00:39:09into this fight tonight.
00:39:10Nice left hand for Johnson there.
00:39:15Take the body afterward, Joe.
00:39:17Over the top, take the body afterward.
00:39:20Over the top, take the body.
00:39:24Over the top, take the body afterward.
00:39:28A lead left from Johnson,
00:39:29finds the mark.
00:39:30Johnson's got a great poker face though, man.
00:39:32Good movement to show,
00:39:33like, I'm not tired, I'm fine.
00:39:35Because he was really suffering
00:39:37after all that output at the end of the second.
00:39:39But he's coming out here,
00:39:40he's bouncing around,
00:39:41he's still in the face of Sumo Darji.
00:39:43Both guys just having elite-level cardio.
00:39:46Because it's not about getting tired,
00:39:47it's about how can you push through it
00:39:48and continue at that pace,
00:39:50even when you're exhausted.
00:39:55Take him deep, Charles.
00:40:02Now go back over the top.
00:40:04Straight line, then come over the top.
00:40:05Halfway through the round, Charles.
00:40:09230, take the ground.
00:40:12Charles, you're a marathon runner.
00:40:13Let's go!
00:40:14You can work, baby!
00:40:15You can work to do that work!
00:40:18Get his back and get the case!
00:40:22Get his back and get the case, Charles!
00:40:24I think Charles Johnson's a little bit up
00:40:26because of the pressure.
00:40:27He's landing a lot of shots,
00:40:29but Sumo Darji is really finding a case for himself
00:40:31in this matchup.
00:40:32It's hard to tell how the judges are going to see it,
00:40:35because it's been so back and forth.
00:40:36But Johnson has dropped it once.
00:40:38So, we'll see how it goes.
00:40:41The last two minutes.
00:40:51I think round one is going to be really key, too, right?
00:40:53I mean, it's...

00:41:03with dropping Sumo Darji that bad.
00:41:05Even though there was submission attempts,
00:41:07I think the damage was really done
00:41:09on the side of Charles Johnson.

00:41:22That's huge right there for Johnson.
00:41:23And what's been a close round,
00:41:24Sumo Darji probably outpointing him to this point.
00:41:27And now he can settle the pace down.

00:46:46Chimayev returns to action.
00:46:48He is undefeated.
00:46:49His last outing came in Abu Dhabi last fall, when he beat Kamaru Usman over three rounds.

00:47:25If he's throwing the left hook, it's to set up the calf kick or the inside kick.
00:47:29Everything works together until this guy gets the knockout that he's looking for, Savage

00:47:54And every time that we've seen Hamzat, he has looked incredible, and I just cannot wait

00:48:37division.
00:48:38Rob Font wants to hold on to his spot and a major change for him.
00:48:42He spent his fight camp in Montreal with the team at TriStar.
00:48:45A new atmosphere and outlook could bring Font back to the upper echelon of the division.
00:48:51Or is it Kyler Phillips' time to arise?

00:58:53Phillips just-
00:58:54It's a side control now for Phillips.
00:58:56Yeah, moves right through to a different position.
00:58:59That a boy.
00:59:00Get to work, get to work, get to work, get to work, get to work.
00:59:03Keep going, keep going, get to work, get to work, get to work.
00:59:06Defend, defend, get back to guard.
00:59:09Take your time, get back to guard.
00:59:13Take your time, get back to guard, get back to guard.
00:59:15Walk over it, walk over it, walk over it.
00:59:18Yes, now hips heavy, hips heavy.
00:59:21Now work.
00:59:23Cal Phillips is splitting the legs there.
00:59:25Jon Crotch is calling for that.
00:59:28Whenever you see Rob Fawn try to get that leg involved,
00:59:30he folds it right over.
00:59:32And he's in a mixture of like side mount
00:59:34and he can move to mount if he keeps pressing that leg.
00:59:37But if he stays in side mount,
00:59:38he can just hop back and forth right there
00:59:40where Jon Crotch has Phillips.
00:59:43Elbows in, get your knee inside, get your knee inside.
00:59:46Yep, yep.
00:59:47Check, check.
00:59:47Back to the middle of the body.
00:59:48Get your left knee right under his neck.
00:59:51Left hand under his neck.
00:59:53Slides that knee right across, but Fawn-
00:59:55Get to work, that's it, go.
00:59:57Able to get back to a half guard for a bit.
