02:39homosexual men were rounded up and placed in a concentration camp along with Jewish
02:45people. They were designed by a pink triangle. Dude, I never saw that. 100,000 Germans. Their
03:03own people. So that means the Germans is fighting the Germans, the Jews, and everybody else at the
03:10same time. Look, there is history. This is what made it so big. The Stonewall riots in New York.
03:22The beginning of the major resistance by gay men and lesbians to discrimination. Trans women,
03:29Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson were two of the first
03:38instigators of a residence against the police raid in Stonewall. I've been to Stonewall. I've
03:44been over there, man. I had to see it with my own eyes. Everything that people talk about,
03:49that's amazing. I have to see it with my own eyes, especially if I don't live too far from there.
03:54And there it goes.
04:01You know, some guys are not going to like this too much. This is not going to be strictly on
04:05this one. I'm going to be showing you everything, man. I got to show you everything.
04:09We are homosexual human beings and homosexual American citizens. Everybody always remembers
04:16the first word in both of those phrases, homosexual, and very conveniently overlooked
04:21second and third words in each of those phrases, American citizen and human being.
04:25I haven't been to the village in a while, man. See, look, what I told you, the village, the voice,

05:06This paper was a big, gigantic paper in the village. It was a free paper. It was thick.
05:11It told you a bunch of different things and it told you where to get escorts at.

05:22Back in 1969, as a turbulent decade was winding down, the Stonewall Inn was a popular gathering
05:28place for New York City's LGBT community. At the time, being gay, lesbian, bisexual,
05:34or transgender was considered obscene, illegal, even a mental illness. One night,
05:40police raided the bar and started arresting folks. Raids like these were nothing new,
05:45but this time, the patrons had had enough. So they stood up and spoke out. The riots became
05:50protests. The protests became a movement. The movement ultimately became an integral part
05:57of America. Having been at Stonewall, being back here, I think I have a kind of survivor's
06:04guilt, I could call it, because on the Stonewall picture of the Fred MacDowell,
06:08I'm probably the only one still alive. Most of them never lived to get to be like 24 or 25 years
06:15old. Back then, I didn't think about it being difficult. You just had to get through it.
06:20Most gay people back then, if they had any kind of a job, they were scared to death of even being
06:26found out to be gay. We had nothing, so we had nothing to lose. It's like the Bob Dylan song
06:32where he says, when you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose. I remember the late 1960s.
06:38Gay people were victims on a culture that had no respect, no tolerance. We were being brutalized.
06:47We were being murdered. We were being ostracized, in a sense. Stonewall was a safe haven for LGBT
06:57people. The Stonewall riots in 1969, I think, obviously it was a very pivotal point in our
07:03history. It was when we all stood up and a trans woman of color said, enough is enough,
07:08and it started a movement. And it started a movement that said, we're not less than you,
07:13we are your equals. So you come over here and take a look at it. When you think about the riots,
07:16you think about unity. Stonewall. And that unity is something that we've never lost.
07:21Today, we have gay and lesbian elected officials.
07:27Can't go in there. This is what it looks like when you try to go in one of these places,
07:30like this. Bang. So you could build whatever you want. You know what I like, man? I like the way
07:38they have the city like that, man. So you don't actually see the building, but you have the image
07:43of the building. See, look how big it is, man. I never came over here, because I told you I'm not

07:52statue is still in the park today. I never went in that park. Because I didn't want to be like,
