MotoGP Sprint Race Phillip Island 2024
Transcript
00:00Good morning if you're joining us in the middle of the night. Welcome to Australia for round 17 of the MotoGP World Championships.
00:07Just four rounds to go, 148 points still up for grabs and the stakes sky-high as we head into today's 13-lap sprint.
00:16Jorge Martin here, starting on pole position for the third year running in Australia.
00:21The first ever sprint race though, and Jorge Martin pulled out a stunning lap in tricky conditions earlier today.
00:28The track was still a little bit damp, but he was leagues ahead of his rivals, and particularly ahead of his title rival, Feko Bagnaia, 10 behind in the standings.
00:37Bagnaia starts his worst qualifying since Jerez at round 4.
00:43So which way will that 10-point gap go today with 12 up for grabs?
00:47In between them on the grid, Marquez Lanza, second, he's looked sharp in the wet and the dry.
00:52Two seagulls, Feko Bagnaia having to take evasive action already down towards Turn 1, and rounding out the front row alongside Marquez is the enigmatic Maverick Vinales.
01:02Who knows what he'll give today? It has, Neil, been a weekend of challenges from wild winds to even wilder rain, and of course the local wildlife which we've already seen down there at Turn 1.
01:13What do you reckon we're going to get in these next 13 laps?
01:15Well, it's going to depend if this man can convert his poor position into a good start, because Bagnaia will need to attack straight away.
01:23The only thing I think that's going to be positive for everybody is the fact that, you know, with that hard-front tyre, it's going to take a couple of laps before it's really, really in perfect conditions, especially for the right-hand corners.
01:36Look at that, they are spots of rain.
01:37They're in the air.
01:38We felt them earlier, when we were down on the grid, then it stopped, so riders will be seeing that on their visors.
01:45That is a fact. It's mental rain, so it will be evaporating as soon as it hits the track.
01:50Not to feel in those kinds of conditions, though.
01:53You're right, Martín and Bagnaia, how many risks are you willing to take?
01:57Yeah, not many.
01:58Look how fast they're going on this warm-up lap.
02:00This is one of the fastest warm-up laps I've seen, because they're trying to generate heat in that front tyre.
02:05They are pushing hard.
02:06Only two riders not gone with the hard front, Juanmi and Alex Rings.
02:10Three riders have gone with the medium rear, which I am baffled by.
02:14Johan Zarco, Marco Berszeki and Lorenzo Sabadori.
02:17They were said it's a safety tyre, in theory, with a treated edge to deal with this track, which is so rigorous on the tyres.
02:24Yeah, this is the hardest track of all, and especially with the new asphalt for this year, so it's going to be super abrasive.
02:33Here we go.
02:3513 laps of Phillip Island.
02:37Wow.
02:38A sprint race around most racetracks are exciting.
02:40Put them around the best racetrack in the world.
02:43Wind them up and let them go.
02:45We are ready to get racing there.
02:47What have we got to come over the next 20 minutes?
02:4913 laps.
02:51I suggest that you hang on tight for this one.
02:54It should be a wild ride.
02:56They've had very little dry track time as they crouch down and get ready to race here.
03:02They've been held a long time.
03:04The lights are on.
03:05They go out and we are underway.
03:07They look like a solid start from everyone.
03:08Marc Márquez just weaving a little bit.
03:10Peco Van Jaer had to avoid Maverick Vinales, who was just standing still off the start there.
03:15Oh, Marc Márquez has gone really wide in turn one.
03:18He's going to lose tons of positions there.
03:20Márquez dropping right down the order.
03:23It's Martín who's leading from Bizecki in second place.
03:26Then Maverick Vinales recovered so well into the first corner.
03:29Yes, Maverick got a terrible start.
03:31He got swallowed up by the whole pack really.
03:33He was down to about six or seven, but had a fantastic turn two.
03:36A lot of people misjudged that turn one, that first run down there.
03:40It's so tough, especially with the side wind.
03:42That's aggressive.
03:44He's really aggressive on Maverick Vinales.
03:46That's going to allow, as well, Eneo Bastianini to come through on Vinales.
03:50It's Martín leading.
03:51Is Vinales going to fight back? No.
03:53That was so aggressive from Brad Finder.
03:55But that's what happens.
03:56It's lap one into turn four.
03:57You know someone's going to have a go.
03:59Martín's checking out.
04:00More often than not, it's Brad Finder having a go as well, isn't it?
04:03He was in that kind of position last year, if you remember.
04:05Running second for much of this race.
04:07Finished just off the podium in the main race a year ago.
04:11Marc Márquez, he just was wide at turn one.
04:13It was like he had second evasive action in some way.
04:16I really want to see that again as he drops inside down into FG Corner.
04:19No way through on Morbidelli.
04:21No, there was half a gap there.
04:23If he'd have gone for it, that would have been contact.
04:25And that wouldn't have ended well.
04:26So is he going to try and dive up the inside into the last corner?
04:29It's optimistic, of course.
04:30Does it need a second invitation?
04:32But will that affect his exit?
04:33It normally does here.
04:35Yeah, I think, yeah.
04:37The only question, Marc, is how good he is coming out of that final corner.
04:41He's in towards the final couple of tenths of a second.
04:43And he's even attacking Maverick Vinales.
04:44They're having to lean into the windmill as they drop down into Doohan's Corner.
04:48They're leaning before they even get on the brakes down there.
04:51Yeah, and Zarco's gone wide.
04:52It's so tricky into turn one with the wind.
04:54Jack Miller's made up five positions off the start,
04:56but it's his teammate, Brad Binder, the big mover, from 11th on the grid.
05:00He's up into fourth as Jorge Martín is checking out at the front,
05:04just like he did in the only race we had last year,
05:07the main race, which was on the Saturday.
05:09Yeah, and now already Martín will relax a little bit.
05:12He'll see his body on the scene.
05:13He's got 0.6 of a second.
05:15Also, he's done the first lap.
05:16That front tyre temperature's perfect now.
05:18He can really attack.
05:20Now it's a case of doing two qualifying laps,
05:22trying to get a gap and see if he can control it.
05:25Let's not forget, in theory, I haven't seen quite yet,
05:27Marco Visetti's got the medium rear tyre in,
05:29the one that's, I don't know, it's got harder treated edge
05:33to deal with the rigours of this circuit.
05:35You'd think that would take some time to get going.
05:38You'd think the riders on the shop behind him
05:40should be able to power past easily.
05:42But he is.
05:43The stopgap on his teammate,
05:44he's out of shape there into MG.
05:47And he gets it dropped down to the apex.
05:49And Fagnani needs to get through quickly.
05:51Yeah, he does.
05:52Well, the gap's growing into 0.8 of a second.
05:54The lead now for Jorge Martín.
05:56And like I said, once he gets across that line,
05:59he'll see his pit board, 0.8 of a second.
06:01He can use those flowing lines.
06:02He can really attack.
06:03Look at the slingshot Brad Binder was trying to get,
06:06compared to the turning of that Ducati,
06:08just turning almost underneath Binder
06:10as they come down the line now.
06:12It's Martín leading.
06:13Marc Márquez has got through on Fagnani.
06:15He's having to work really hard.
06:17But he's picking him off one by one, Neil.
06:19Yeah, he is.
06:20Márquez is about half a second slower
06:23than Jorge Martín, who's leading.
06:25But he's faster than all the other riders in front of him.
06:27He's on a mission.
06:28He's got a fast race pace.
06:29We know that.
06:30It's just that mistake in the first corner
06:32could potentially have cost him the win.
06:34Yeah, we need to see it again, don't we?
06:35Here goes Peco Bagnaia lining up a move now.
06:38He knows he's got to go.
06:39Oh, it was a risk from Bagnaia.
06:42And Bezzecchia, I have to say,
06:44just closes the door on him.
06:47Yeah, and a little bit further back,
06:48I just saw, is that Mobignelli?
06:50Wow.
06:51He's got Bullitt out of the way yet again.
06:53And then Márquez, Bullitt picked it.
06:55And that's not something you say that often,
06:57is it, about Brad Binder?
06:58But as he went through, opened the door,
07:00and Bastianini came past also.
07:03Track limits warning, Neil, for our race leader.
07:05Yeah, that's not ideal.
07:06It's a narrow race.
07:07I can tell you what,
07:08when you come out of that last corner,
07:09you use a lot of kerb.
07:10It's really easy to touch the green there.
07:12You'd think now,
07:13as Bastianini looks for a way through on Marc Márquez,
07:16you would think now that these tyres
07:18have got a lot in them.
07:19This is a tyre that lasted the race distance last year.
07:22It's half race distance.
07:24However, on the flip side,
07:26we've got a brand new track surface,
07:27and no one's done enough laps to know.
07:29No, no, and it is abrasive.
07:31We know that the World Superbikes were here
07:33early with the year.
07:34They had to do a mandatory pit stop
07:36because the race wouldn't do,
07:37sorry, the tyre wouldn't do full race distance.
07:40Here we go with Bagnaiar,
07:41finally gets through.
07:42Oh, is he going to go straight though?
07:43Because the back's moving and wobbling.
07:45The wind, you can see how much the wind's pushing as well
07:47from the inside.
07:48Absolutely.
07:49He lunged, didn't he, down there.
07:50Just almost as if to say to Marco Bizzecchi,
07:52I am coming through, mate.
07:54You've got to know that I am here.
07:56And he's done well to bring it back down.
07:57So Bagnaiar now up into second place.
07:59He said, Neil, before the weekend,
08:01two second places might be my best bet,
08:03knowing how strong Martín is here.
08:05Yeah, this is Martín's track.
08:07Actually, if you think though,
08:08we're in Buriram in Thailand next weekend
08:11and Martín was fast there as well.
08:13It was a great race last year, wasn't it,
08:15between himself, Bagnaiar and Bram Binder.
08:18There is Binder now,
08:19just losing touch with Bastinini,
08:21who I have to say has done really well
08:22from tenth on the grid.
08:24Marquez is on the front row
08:25and they are now together in track.
08:27They are battling themselves
08:28for third in the championship.
08:30Bastinini ahead of Marquez by two points
08:32in that particular battle.
08:34So the gap at the front is sitting out
08:36one second.
08:38Bagnaiar put a couple of good laps together
08:41to try and claw down Jorge Martín,
08:43force him into a mistake.
08:45It's been a season of mistakes,
08:46hasn't it, Gareth?
08:48Absolutely, yeah.
08:49They've all made them.
08:50Six in races for Peco Bagnaiar
08:53throughout the season.
08:55Four for Martín in races.
08:58But then you add in the qualifying crashes
09:00and things like that.
09:01It seems like no one's wanted to win it.
09:03No one's wanted to take an advantage.
09:05Here comes Marc Marquez now.
09:06He's got a lovely run, hasn't he,
09:08on Verzecki.
09:09Not going to be enough.
09:10Verzecki running really deep
09:12down into Duin.
09:13But Marc Marquez, Neil,
09:14is the fastest rider on track
09:16by a margin.
09:17Yeah, that doesn't surprise me at all.
09:19And I'll tell you what,
09:20he's going to risk everything.
09:22The passing manoeuvre at this track,
09:24he's into turn four.
09:25Marc's really good into it.
09:26This is out of two.
09:27We're going to go down
09:28through the stoner corner,
09:29turn three,
09:30and he's going to set up.
09:31That's it.
09:32He's going to set to the right-hand side.
09:33Actually, Verzecki's made a mistake there,
09:35gone wide.
09:36Marquez around the outside
09:37is never going to work.
09:38It isn't, not with Verzecki
09:39on the inside of him
09:40because there is no love lost
09:41between the pair of them.
09:43And Verzecki,
09:44just as soon as he saw that
09:45lilac bike on his outside,
09:47made sure that he just
09:48blocked his way through.
09:49But Marquez is all over
09:50the back of Verzecki now.
09:51No love lost.
09:52It's the biggest understatement.
09:54It's a hatred.
09:55These two have come together
09:56on track on so many occasions.
09:58And nine times out of ten,
09:59it's Marco Verzecki who said,
10:00of course,
10:01he ended up running off the track.
10:03So Verzecki,
10:04he's going to leave no room now.
10:06He'll probably even go defensive
10:07down here into MG.
10:10Yep, middle of the track.
10:11That's defensive.
10:13Yeah, Marc Marquez is racing now.
10:16I will say, he's just had a lap
10:17which would have put him
10:18third on the grid.
10:20And that's here in this sprint race.
10:22The clouds loom overhead.
10:23We're okay for now.
10:24We're on board with
10:25an Airbastinini now.
10:26Looking at the rear.
10:27And look at Marquez
10:28just turning it underneath.
10:30Marco Verzecki.
10:31Incredible.
10:32He's alongside him
10:33before he even gets to the line.
10:34Yeah, that is incredible.
10:35You wonder if it's going to use
10:37a lot of tyre by doing that.
10:38But you'd think so.
10:40But then again,
10:41as we know,
10:42it's a tyre that should last
10:43the race.
10:44Last year's winner,
10:45Joan Zarco,
10:46has crashed out.
10:47And also,
10:48we know how good Marc Marquez is
10:49around left-handers.
10:50And he's shown it,
10:51hasn't he,
10:52this weekend
10:53through that corner
10:54and through the likes
10:55of Stoner Corner.
10:56He was the strongest rider
10:57in the second sector
10:58on the racetrack
10:59through here.
11:01Bastinini's man on track.
11:02He's the leader.
11:03A 27.8.
11:04And the gap is up to
11:051.4 seconds.
11:06Bastinini's really wide there.
11:08Yeah, that was another one.
11:09He was looking,
11:10lining up a move
11:11on Verzecki.
11:12But Verzecki's having this,
11:13you said it,
11:14riding in the middle
11:15of the racetrack,
11:16doing everything he can.
11:17Oh, someone crashed
11:18in the background
11:19coming out of Turn 4.
11:20I don't know who it was.
11:21It might have been Acosta.
11:22It was Pedro.
11:23It was Alex Marquez
11:24by the looks of things.
11:25Pedro Acosta, meanwhile,
11:26is down in 12th.
11:27Yep.
11:29So Alex Marquez
11:30has crashed out.
11:31He started in 8th.
11:34There he is.
11:35I'm not sure whether
11:36that was a coming together
11:37or what,
11:38but it was a bit chaotic
11:39back there.
11:42Between Brad Binder
11:43and Raul Fernandez,
11:44not much to choose.
11:45Marc Marquez is going
11:46to have Bagnaia here.
11:47Look at that.
11:48Look how much he makes up
11:49in Turn 11.
11:50And that's a left-hander.
11:51That's, I mean,
11:52it's an anti-clockwise track
11:53anyway,
11:54so there's plenty of them.
11:55But that's his skill.
11:57He's going to try
11:58and get the run.
11:59He's going to try
12:00and get a bit of a slipstream.
12:01He's not quite close enough.
12:02He's going to get
12:03the slipstream about now,
12:04but he certainly
12:05isn't going to be able
12:06to do anything
12:07in the braking zone.
12:08We also know
12:09that's the one place
12:10on this circuit
12:11that the GP24,
12:12with that extra travel
12:13that it has
12:14on its rear right-hand device,
12:15just seems to get
12:16that bit more purchase.
12:17Yeah, look at that.
12:180.3 of a second.
12:20He's going to,
12:21if he wants to win this race,
12:22he's going to have
12:23to attack straight away
12:24on this lap.
12:25He's got seven laps to go.
12:26I thought he was going to go
12:27at the southern loop there
12:28through Stoners.
12:30Oh!
12:31He's got it sideways there.
12:32A little bit too sideways.
12:34It snapped on him.
12:36That was trust then,
12:37wasn't it?
12:38Dropping right in
12:39on the brakes,
12:40he is.
12:41Like a rash
12:42on the rear
12:43of Fecco Bagnaglia.
12:46And again,
12:47just look
12:48at the ground made up
12:49just through the middle
12:50of the left-hand corners.
12:52It's like
12:53Bagnaglia's stopping it
12:54a bit in the corners,
12:55sort of firing it in.
12:56So he's late on the brakes,
12:57no corner speed,
12:58but Marc can't get past.
13:00He's going to light up
13:01down to NG here now.
13:02It's a classic.
13:03Oh, again,
13:04Bagnaglia
13:05right in the middle
13:06of the racetrack
13:07all the while.
13:08Bagnaglia is settling
13:09for second here.
13:10He's not thinking about
13:11getting after Jorge Martín.
13:12He's keeping tyres
13:13and bike underneath him
13:14so that he can take second
13:15and minimise the damage.
13:19Marc Márquez
13:20has to find a way through.
13:21He's had a lap
13:22trying to do so
13:23and still not managed it.
13:28OK.
13:29Look at that initial
13:30drive out of the corner.
13:33Surely not going to be
13:34close enough.
13:35No.
13:36Great shot from the
13:37helicopter down
13:38at Dewan's corner.
13:39And again,
13:40you can be a little bit
13:41wide down there into Dewan's
13:42what looks like
13:43because then you've got
13:44the line down into
13:45the southern loop.
13:46He's so right though.
13:47Bagnaglia is settling
13:48for second and he's
13:49trying to save his tyre.
13:50You can see the way
13:51he's riding.
13:52He's got the front.
13:53He's pulled up in
13:54another faster slab.
13:55The gap is to 2.6 seconds.
13:57You do feel like
13:59they are trying to
14:01prepare for the race
14:02as Marc Márquez
14:03lunged down into middle.
14:04Actually,
14:05actually gets it perfect.
14:07He actually brought it down.
14:08You thought it was a lunge
14:09but, you know,
14:10he had set that up.
14:11He watched Bagnaglia
14:12pull across on the track
14:13in front of him
14:14but he takes another
14:15couple of points
14:16out of Bagnaglia's account.
14:18What would Gigi
14:19think about that one?
14:20When does the point
14:21come in the championship
14:22where Marc Márquez
14:23has to run
14:24Taylor and Charlie
14:25for Peco Bagnaglia?
14:26Never.
14:28He doesn't.
14:29And he won't do,
14:30obviously.
14:31I know, you know.
14:33You did ask me.
14:34True, true.
14:35Here comes Bastinini.
14:36He doesn't know it either.
14:37Mathematically,
14:38they still got a shot
14:39at the championship.
14:41And through go
14:42both Márquez
14:43and Bastinini.
14:44Peco Bagnaglia is struggling.
14:45Really struggling.
14:48I mean, if you think
14:49Márquez was behind him
14:50by this lap.
14:53Nobody outside,
14:54obviously, watching on
14:55as more points go
14:56the way of Jorge Martín.
14:5816, the gap,
14:59as things stand.
15:00Jack Miller,
15:01I'm afraid to say,
15:02has crashed out
15:03of the race.
15:04We're told he is OK.
15:05Five laps to go
15:06in the Australian Grand Prix
15:07and the Aussie,
15:08unfortunately,
15:10has gone out.
15:12We haven't seen any of
15:13these crashes further back.
15:14I don't know whether
15:15it's people coming together
15:16or mistakes all made alone.
15:20Zarco,
15:21Márquez,
15:22that's Alex Márquez
15:23and Jack Miller
15:24all
15:26taking an early bath.
15:27I'll tell you who's having
15:28a good race coming forward.
15:29It's Fabio Di Giano Antonio.
15:30He's currently
15:31in seventh place,
15:32closing in fast
15:33on Maverick Mignoli.
15:34He's,
15:35I'll just say,
15:36his fastest lap of the race.
15:37And he had a huge
15:38crash and turned one
15:39by all accounts earlier.
15:40We just never saw it.
15:42When you were saying earlier,
15:43Dorner,
15:44the camera,
15:45well, this weekend
15:46in particular,
15:47has been second to none.
15:48But,
15:49like,
15:50there's been a couple,
15:51haven't we,
15:52that we haven't seen around here.
15:53Because it's just,
15:54things are happening
15:55all the time
15:56in every single corner.
15:57Hey, what about this man?
15:58Five laps to go,
15:59he's got a three-second lead.
16:00I mean,
16:01he's just been on another planet.
16:02Well, he was last year.
16:03Yeah,
16:04got the start,
16:05attacked straight away,
16:06did that first lap,
16:07let the front tyre
16:08get up to temperature,
16:09settled,
16:10then put his head down.
16:11And it was literally
16:12two,
16:13three,
16:14four,
16:15five qualifying laps,
16:16all in the 27s,
16:17they weren't even thinking
16:18about saving his tyre.
16:19Only rider in the 27s,
16:20apart from
16:21Martín at the moment,
16:22is Fabio Di Gianantonio.
16:27Down into turn one,
16:28a little wobble there
16:30from Martín.
16:31Comfortable gap for him,
16:323.333 seconds
16:35between himself and
16:36Marc Márquez.
16:39Miñales has just done
16:40a personal best lap,
16:42but,
16:43finding it hard
16:44to get through
16:45on Marco Pesecchi.
16:47Yeah, it makes you wonder
16:48if Pesecchi's tyre choice
16:49is holding him up now
16:50at this point in the race.
16:51You'd have thought
16:52it would have come better,
16:53not worse, but...
16:55Still, they will be having
16:56a really close look
16:57at Pesecchi
16:58as Maverick Miñales now,
16:59who's looking to find
17:00a way through,
17:01but we've seen Pesecchi
17:02is a nuisance
17:03to get through.
17:04Yeah, he's hard to pass.
17:06But Maverick can
17:07line that up quite nicely.
17:10Where can Maverick
17:11get past?
17:12I mean, did you
17:13going to get past him
17:14whilst he's trying to
17:15work out that puzzle?
17:16Pesecchi's data
17:17is going to be what
17:18they're all looking at
17:19at the Ducati later on today,
17:20isn't it?
17:21How that medium tyre
17:22has worked,
17:23because...
17:25Jorge Martín
17:26setting laps
17:28with the soft tyre
17:29that are clearly
17:31a second quicker,
17:32more than a second quicker
17:33than Pesecchi, right?
17:34Okay,
17:35so what do we say
17:36the natural gap between them
17:37is half a second perhaps
17:38this year, 4 tenths?
17:40And the calculations
17:41will have to be done
17:42like they were done,
17:43I'm just thinking about
17:44last year, Neil,
17:45where Jorge Martín
17:46went with the soft tyre
17:47and in the end,
17:48the medium was the option.
17:49Yeah.
17:50I just wonder,
17:51those calculations will
17:52mean it's a bit of
17:53a head-scratcher tomorrow.
17:54Yeah, you can see there,
17:55Pesecchi's got no exit speed,
17:57so obviously it's
17:58a harder compound,
17:59it must be spinning
18:00a little bit more.
18:01Maverick's in a perfect position
18:02there,
18:03lovely pass,
18:04great pass
18:05up the inside,
18:06got sucked in a little bit,
18:07it can happen
18:09into Turn 1
18:10with the wind,
18:11that's going to encourage
18:12Fabio Di Gianantonio
18:13just to
18:14be in the gaps
18:15only half a second.
18:16First and best lap
18:17for Marc Márquez
18:18on that last one,
18:19the gap's gone from
18:203.3 down to 2.8
18:21now between Martín and Márquez,
18:23Martín obviously rolling off,
18:24but what it just says
18:25to me, Neil,
18:26is that there's still pace
18:28in that tyre
18:29at mid-race distance
18:30and for Marc Márquez.
18:31Yeah, absolutely.
18:32And I think
18:33you're right though,
18:34Martín's controlling it,
18:35once you get a lead
18:36of three seconds
18:37with three laps to go,
18:38it's such a good feeling.
18:39The race is done,
18:40it's just then about
18:41just being precise.
18:42I know what you're thinking
18:43last year.
18:44He had two seconds,
18:45he had one and a half seconds
18:46with three laps to go
18:47until last year
18:48and got beat.
18:49But yeah,
18:50three seconds
18:51with three laps to go,
18:52job done.
18:53I want to ask the question though,
18:55without that first corner,
18:56whatever it was
18:57for Marc Márquez,
18:58would he have been
18:59in the mix
19:00as Pedro Acosta
19:01goes down here?
19:02I think, yeah,
19:03Márquez would have been
19:04in the mix.
19:05Márquez had the pace
19:06to go with Jorge and Martín.
19:07Ooh, is he OK?
19:08Bike's still running,
19:09they need to hit that
19:10kill switch quickly
19:11or they'll be peppering
19:12all their pals
19:13with gravel down there,
19:14the marshals.
19:17Ooh,
19:18another attempt
19:19from Maverick Viñales.
19:23Oh, he's got the perfect
19:24uphill bit to pass him
19:25actually before the braking zone.
19:26He'll be able to level him
19:27so he doesn't have to
19:28outbrake him now.
19:31Oh, no!
19:33Oh, that's horrific.
19:34Marco Fisechi
19:35just got dragged
19:36into the back
19:37of Maverick Viñales' bike
19:38and they both go down.
19:40Maverick's up
19:41on his feet.
19:42Marco Fisechi,
19:43he was just so close
19:44between them
19:45and as he went through
19:46he dragged Fisechi.
19:48He dragged him into it.
19:49It's your worst nightmare.
19:51Over 200 miles an hour
19:52and literally
19:53that's what's happened.
19:54Marco Fisechi
19:55ends up being a passenger.
19:56Watch this,
19:57so Viñales passes him,
19:58he's done nothing wrong
19:59but then he just gets sucked
20:00in the braking zone
20:01and there's nowhere to go.
20:03I mean,
20:04that impact
20:06I'm going to say
20:07180 miles an hour.
20:08Horrific,
20:09we've seen it before.
20:10It's your worst nightmare.
20:11Look how big that is.
20:12And it was more to a front lock,
20:13wasn't it,
20:14for Marco Fisechi.
20:17Tell you what,
20:18Vez had his arms
20:19tucked in as well
20:20and that's meant
20:21he's absolutely
20:22been put through
20:23a washing machine there.
20:24Oh, Brad Binder's now
20:25gone down
20:26at the Miller hairpin.
20:27They are dropping like flies
20:28with Acosta also going out.
20:31Here's the move.
20:33Just a little bit wider
20:34because Morgan Daly
20:35was coming through
20:36and Brad Binder.
20:38Well,
20:39that is awful to see.
20:40Yeah,
20:41that was a horrible crash.
20:42It looks like
20:43at least
20:44Vez is
20:45conscious down there
20:46as Jorge Martín
20:47crosses the line
20:48with one to go
20:49with the yellow flag
20:50in the first corner.
20:51He's got
20:522.1 seconds.
20:53The advantage
20:54is really rolled up
20:5528.8.
20:56I don't think it's
20:57tyre problems
20:58or anything like that.
20:59It's control,
21:00isn't it?
21:01Total control.
21:02Total dominance.
21:03I mean,
21:04pole position by half a second
21:05around this
21:06really tight track.
21:07Everyone knows it.
21:08It's a short lap.
21:09Normally,
21:10if you get put...
21:11Half a second round here
21:12is like
21:13one and a half seconds
21:14at Silverstone.
21:15That's good to see.
21:16That's obviously
21:17Marco's
21:18conscience.
21:19But
21:20it's the worst crash imaginable.
21:21You hit the back
21:22of another rider.
21:23You take him out.
21:24But Bezeki went over the top.
21:25It's like a high side.
21:27It's such a violent crash.
21:30You never want to see that.
21:33Jorge Martín,
21:34meanwhile,
21:35has controlled this race
21:36from the front.
21:37He was superb
21:38in qualifying.
21:39And it's the
21:40qualifying lap,
21:41dancing through
21:42damp patches,
21:43Neil,
21:44that has set up this win.
21:45Yeah, you're so right.
21:46Sat on pole position.
21:47He looked confident.
21:48I actually saw him with his
21:49girlfriend on the grid.
21:50And he looked
21:51probably the most relaxed
21:52I've seen him.
21:53It's quite...
21:54You know what it's like.
21:55He's an incredibly intense
21:56individual.
21:57So,
21:58he knew if he could get the start,
21:59he got the pace.
22:00And that's exactly what happened.
22:01The best thing for him
22:02was Marc Marquez
22:03making that mistake
22:04at turn one.
22:05That meant he could
22:06have jumped him.
22:07Marquez is going to be
22:08the challenge tomorrow.
22:09There's a few spots of rain
22:10out there as well.
22:11I just saw on the camera lens
22:12as they come through
22:13the final corner
22:14for the final time.
22:15And Jorge Martín,
22:16just a little twitch
22:17on the grass
22:18as he comes to the line.
22:19Mark Webber
22:20waving the flags
22:21for a Grand Prix winner,
22:22or a sprint winner,
22:23should I say,
22:24in Jorge Martín
22:25here in Australia.
22:27Mark Marquez is second.
22:28Eneo Bastanini is third.
22:30And, well,
22:31Peko Banyaya
22:32only able to take
22:33fourth place today
22:36and that means
22:37the gap has opened up
22:38once more, Neil.
22:39Another six points
22:40into Martín's account.
22:41It's 16
22:42with three and a half to go.
22:44Yeah, it's 16 points
22:46and you have to say,
22:47of course,
22:48Jorge Martín
22:49is favourite
22:50for tomorrow's race.
22:52But what we learnt
22:53over the years,
22:54well, the Factory
22:55to Catches team
22:56do their homework
22:57on Saturday night
22:58and usually find something.
23:00The issue
23:01with that, Neil,
23:02is
23:03nobody's done
23:04enough running
23:05on the
23:06harder option tyres.
23:08Nobody knows
23:09how the soft tyre
23:10is going to fare
23:11in a long race distance
23:12and there hasn't been
23:13enough running
23:14for them to pull through
23:15that much data.
23:16No, that's true.
23:17That is true.
23:18That's going to make it
23:19difficult.
23:21But Banyaya
23:22is up against it.
23:23Six seconds behind.
23:24That's half a second
23:25a lap or more,
23:26isn't it?
23:27But he looked,
23:28he had nothing.
23:29He looked uncomfortable,
23:30didn't he?
23:31Remarkable.
23:33Well, Marc Marquez
23:34was excellent, wasn't he?
23:35After he had that
23:36mistake
23:37at Turn 1.
23:38I still, we haven't seen
23:39a replay of it.
23:40We'll have to have a really
23:41good look at it,
23:42but that's definitely something.
23:44To see the overhead,
23:45see what happened.
23:46Turn 1,
23:47as we've just seen
23:48in that incident
23:49with Verzecki
23:50and Fabric-Vinales,
23:51was so treacherous today.
23:52Yeah.
23:53You could see them
23:54leaning at the end
23:55of the straight
23:56into the corner
23:57before they even got there.
23:58Yeah, in the braking zone
23:59they already had
24:00a lot of lean angle.
24:03How good is that to see?
24:04That's so good to see
24:05because I've got to say
24:06when Vez was lying there,
24:08I thought he was unconscious.
24:09There's no one at blame,
24:10no one at fault here.
24:11No, Maverick
24:12slipstreamed past him.
24:13There's room to cut across.
24:14He's not cut across
24:15violently in front of him,
24:16which is dangerous.
24:17Maverick's done
24:18absolutely nothing wrong there.
24:20And we've heard,
24:21how many riders
24:22have we heard
24:23been told
24:24when a rider's in front of you
24:25in a braking zone,
24:26what happens is
24:27that basically
24:28there's no force,
24:29there's no G-force
24:30on all the way
24:32and it just
24:33sucks you into the rider.
24:34You know what we'd seen
24:35on the previous lap, Neil?
24:37Maverick ran it a little.
24:38They had different braking markers.
24:40They had a different braking zone
24:41themselves, didn't they?
24:42Between the Aprilia,
24:43which carries
24:44a bit more corner speed.
24:45Persecchi was almost
24:46braking deeper in
24:47and it was just
24:50just one of those things.
24:51But you end up in that
24:52dirty air, don't you?
24:59Looks like both riders
25:00have got away with it anyway.
25:01Let's hope so.
25:02Let's hope so.
25:03I saw Maverick was rushing
25:04to take his glove off
25:05as if he was in some
25:06serious pain
25:07with his left hand.
25:09So let's hope
25:10I mean, if they're unscathed
25:11from that,
25:12that just is testament
25:13to all the safety equipment.
25:14Delight for Jorge Martín
25:16back on the top step
25:18in a sprint race.
25:20What a
25:22season it's been.
25:23Oh, Di Gianantonio's
25:24got a tyre pressure
25:25problem.
25:26In these conditions,
25:27in these temperatures,
25:28on not-hard-braking
25:29circuit.
25:31Yeah, that's a
25:32big surprise.
25:34I'm thinking
25:35for the first time
25:36it's gone backward
25:37and forward and
25:38I've swung
25:39from one rider
25:40to the next.
25:41Having seen that performance,
25:43it's the first time
25:44I'm thinking,
25:45I'll tell you what,
25:46I actually genuinely
25:47think Jorge Martín's
25:48got this.
25:52Shake of hands
25:53between them.
25:59Another podium
26:00for Marc Marquez.
