00:00Hey guys, I'm Tom a tech chap and who wouldn't want one of these big OLED screens super thin and light design
00:06enough performance to say play cyberpunk on high settings or dare I say get some work done as well as the name would suggest
00:11Because it's the brand new 2024 LG gram Pro
00:1616 OLED so is this 2024 model a big upgrade and is it actually worth buying?
00:21Well, I will tell you and if you do find this video helpful a cheeky little thumbs up and a subscribe would be lovely
00:27Now, of course being an LG gram we get a big screen big battery that uncannily light feeling like it's half empty inside
00:34surprisingly durable materials
00:35And of course a very wobbly screen which seems to be gram tradition right now because I mentioned this every single year
00:41It never seems to get better. The hinge itself is fine
00:44And I do appreciate you can actually open it one handed one fingered like that
00:48But that glossy screen with that wobble not a good combination
00:53Anyway more importantly unlike older grams which could struggle with anything that needed a dedicated graphics card these
00:592024 grams get Intel's core ultra CPUs with much faster integrated arc graphics
01:05But this gram Pro not only gets the faster ultra 7 155 H CPU which gets more cores and a higher turbo wattage
01:12but also an Nvidia RTX 3050 GPU option as well as an improved dual fan cooling system and this gorgeous
01:19120 Hertz OLED screen
01:21There is also a 17 inch gram Pro, which is even bigger obviously and with nearly identical specs
01:27Although that gets a 144 Hertz IPS LCD display instead of OLED
01:32But I would go with the OLED every time but either way these are the biggest screens in the lightest laptops
01:38You can get the Pro also meets Intel's Evo platform spec for thin and light laptops
01:43We get 16 or 32 gigs of RAM with a very healthy 1 or 2
01:47Terabytes of storage and if you do go with the RTX 3050, you also get a bigger battery
01:52We also get Windows Hello face unlocking by the 1080p webcam
01:55We get Wi-Fi 6e to USB for Thunderbolt 4 type-c ports alongside a couple of very useful
02:01USB 3.2 type A's a full-size HDMI 2.1 and an audio jack
02:06That is actually a very impressive range of ports for a laptop this thin
02:09The only thing is missing that I would have liked is an SD card reader, but you can always get adapters
02:14That's not bad. But just look at that screen 16 inches 16 by 10 aspect ratio
02:191800p resolution which is kind of like Quad HD plus and
02:23120 Hertz dynamic refresh rate and it's OLED which means you get those incredible inky blacks rich colors
02:29LG reckons this hits 400 nits of brightness which matched my calibration tests
02:33Although I did record 500 nits sustained in SDR on a hundred percent white window
02:37Which is actually pretty good for an OLED
02:39Also as I mentioned earlier it is pretty glossy and reflective and it misses out on the anti-glare coating you get with the LCD option
02:46I mean look at those reflections
02:48You're gonna have to be careful what you've got behind you because it does make it harder to see
02:52So as well as that, we also don't have really have any proper HDR support. There's no display
02:57HDR certification with this either and it's also not a touchscreen. It still looks good though and colors are accurate
03:03I wouldn't have any problems editing photos and videos on this
03:05Also, you've got LG smart assistant app which comes with the usual OLED care options to minimize the chance of image retention
03:12But as with burn-in on any OLED only time will tell but I'm not worried
03:16Every year I review these LG grams and every year I like bounce them around like this and get comments saying what are you doing?
03:21That's a really expensive laptop and you're right. It's just so lightweight
03:25I just can't help throw it around a little bit and actually despite me dropping out a couple of times never had any issues
03:30It's actually surprisingly durable and while there's a bit of flex in the screen and the chassis as a whole
03:36LG say especially at these bigger sizes
03:38It actually does make it more durable like if you've got any backpack and things are pressing against it or you've got some weight on top
03:45Then that little bit of flex like a good building during an earthquake can move around and not actually crack or break
03:51It also has some military 810 H durability standard spec thing
03:56Which basically means you can take this in places where well
03:59I probably wouldn't want to go anyway and at 12.4 millimeters
04:02It is less than a mil thicker than the MacBook Air M3 and these beveled edges around the sides help it look even smaller
04:08My only gripes aside from this screen wobble is that the lower bezel is a little bit chunky
04:14Relatively to similar laptops we've seen and also as you can see there is a good amount of space around the trackpad where they could
04:20Have either made the trackpad bigger or just condense the whole laptop and made it a little bit more compact overall
04:26But that's not a huge deal
04:27It is also not the most exciting looking laptop a little bit boring and drab and officey perhaps although I quite like this
04:34Stealthy magnesium alloy chassis that we've got going on here
04:37I would have loved to have seen the style the white sort of pearlescent one come to the pro as well
04:42But no crack it open and you can see we've got a big 90 watt hour battery here the new dual fan setup
04:48And you've got both m2 SSDs which are upgradable unlike the soldered on RAM
04:52So if you do go with the one terabyte version
04:55Then you can always add an extra drive down the line extra points for that
04:58We get a nice big trackpad which maybe isn't as insanely big as some others like the MacBook Air or Samsung Galaxy Book 4
05:04But it feels nice. It's smooth. It's responsive. No complaints typing also feels good
05:09Although the backlit keys can feel a little bit cramped because we have that numpad to the side there
05:13But on the plus side we have a numpad. I must admit though. I don't love the speakers. They're not bad
05:18It's just the downward firing 3 watt speakers while Dolby Atmos tunes just like bass and full of it flat. Not great. Not terrible
05:27But maybe the most interesting part of all this is the LG gram link
05:31This is an app which lets you link up to 10 of your Windows Android or iOS devices to your gram
05:37Letting you mirror your phone or tablet screen onto the gram or use them as a second screen to extend your desktop
05:43And it actually works plus you can use your grams mouse and keyboard across the devices
05:47You can transfer files or photos between them and it's just a good way of being able to use different devices together in a way
05:53That's actually useful
05:55Okay, let's talk performance because the upgrade from last year's i7 1360p which we had in the style
06:01I reviewed to this with the Intel Core Ultra 7 155 H with the integrated arc graphics and that optional 3050
06:08It's a pretty massive upgrade particularly in the graphics department in PC mark 10
06:13Which is a kind of whole system benchmark
06:15The new pro was actually only 12% faster than the old gram and it is actually a bit slower than the asus
06:20Zenbook 14 pro with the same cpu in geekbench 6
06:24We're only looking at a 3% jump in single core. Although multi-core performance was up 36%
06:30Versus the new macbook air with the m3 chip
06:32Well intel still struggles with a single core but multi-core is very close
06:37And in the opencl graphics test the new onboard arc graphics were 2.3 times faster
06:43While the rtx 3050 was 52% faster than that
06:46Although the m3 gives the arc a run for its money
06:49Oh, and by the way, the rtx 3050 in here is the 45 watt mgp part
06:53Which is roughly in the middle of the power range moving over to cinebench and single core performance jumped 14%
06:59and multi-core a whopping
07:02134%
07:03And while the new intel arc graphics are around twice as fast as the old iris xe and blender
07:08Both it and the 3050 have serious competition from the macbook air with m3 which actually beats them both
07:15Although that only matters if your software works on a mac and for games getting extras like nvidia's dlss
07:21You're still better off with a windows pc
07:23Everything was nice and stable under load. Although mac's cpu temps do get a little bit toasty at times
07:28But the chassis never got hot or uncomfortable to use and the fans don't get overly noisy either
07:33But it's not going to be silent like the fanless macbook air as for gaming
07:37Well, I averaged 61 frames per second in cyberpunk at 1200p with medium settings and dlss set to performance
07:44Honestly a laptop this light feels like it shouldn't be able to do this
07:48I also averaged just over 60 fps in forza motorsport shadow of the tomb raider averaged 56 fps on high using the
07:553050 and i'm also pleased to see performed pretty much identically on battery again, though
08:00Turning on dlss performance gets us over that magic 60 fps because remember
08:04It's not just the raw performance gain of having the rtx 3050
08:08You are also getting ray tracing and more importantly dlss upscaling which can make a massive difference to your games
08:14And of course with the cuda cores av1 nvidia studio whether you're gaming video editing running 3d software
08:20Having that 3050 makes it all significantly faster
08:24But what about battery life? How long does this actually last? Well in my video playback test
08:29Of 200 nits running a 4k youtube videos it lasted 10 hours, which is actually pretty good given the size of the screen
08:35Although it does fall short by a couple of hours
08:37Versus the macbook air and with mixed everyday use I got about seven to eight hours
08:42So it will get you through a full day. I must admit i'm also quite impressed with this webcam 1080p resolution
08:47We also got the ir sensor for face unlocking into windows and it's not bad
08:52If I just take it for a little walk with me change the lighting
08:56This is the backdrop of the studio
09:00Not too bad, but you're gonna have to let me know in the comments how it looks and also how it sounds
09:04with the microphone
09:07That's a bit bright that's too bright there we go
09:10What do you think?
09:11Okay, i've put it off long enough
09:13We have to talk about the price of this thing because for me that is the biggest issue
09:17I have this lg gram pro 16 oled 2024
09:21starts
09:22starts at
09:24$1,700 and actually that's a little bit misleading because that's not the oled version
09:28That's just the regular lg gram pro with 16 gigs of ram one terabyte storage integrated graphics
09:33and an lcd screen
09:351700 the base oled version with this screen is
09:39$2,100 and if you want the 3050 you also have to double the ram and storage to 32 gigs two terabytes and that's
09:47$2,400 now relatively speaking
09:50$300 extra to double the ram double the storage and other 3050 makes complete sense. I would do that if you've got the money, but
09:57$2,400 for this laptop. It's a lovely laptop
10:01But that's a lot of money because the thing is if you are going to spend that much and you do need a gpu
10:06Then it's probably worth compromising on the weight and size a little bit and grabbing something with an rtx 40 50 or 40 60
10:12Which are both much faster and also opens up the likes of frame generation in games
10:16And don't forget apple have just refreshed the macbook air lineup. This is the 15 inch m3
10:21We've got 16 gigs of ram in here 512 storage and it'll cost you
10:25$1,700 both very very nice laptops. This has a slightly longer battery life
10:29I kind of prefer the design of it, although it's a little bit heavier better webcam better speakers
10:34I prefer the touchpad and keyboard a little bit on this although the gram does have a 3050 option
10:39Which is much better for gaming and of course windows a better range of ports and also a bigger oled 120hz screen
10:46This is still stuck with a 60 hertz ips lcd
10:49It's also worth looking at the non-pro
10:51LG grams for this year as you still get the same very impressive arc graphics and you can save a ton of cash
10:57And while this lg gram oled is lovely. There are cheaper oled options
11:01Although obviously in smaller and heavier designs. You are still definitely paying a premium for it to be this light
11:07But what do you reckon? Would you spend?
11:10$2,100 on the base model of this oled or a little bit too expensive
11:13Let me know what you make of the new lg grams in the description below. That's not right in the comments below in the description
11:19I will leave a link to this if you fancy checking it out, and it is a very impressive laptop
11:22I like it a lot assuming you have quite deep pockets and you really really do need it to be this light
11:28Thank you so much for watching guys
11:29If you enjoyed the video a cheeky like and subscribe would be fantastic and i'll see you next time right here on the tech chat
