00:35Alright, let's do this. Hey guys, Anton the Tech Chap,
00:38and this ridiculous monster of a TV on my living room wall
00:42is the new LG G1 OLED Evo TV.
00:45I've got the top-end 77-inch model here,
00:48and it's absolutely stunning, as you would hope for the
00:51hefty sum of £4,800.
00:54So that is an awful lot of money, but when you consider
00:57that last year's equivalent G10 cost £6,000,
01:01in a world of phones, laptops, graphics cards
01:04getting more and more expensive, the fact that this is
01:0720% cheaper and also better than last year's model,
01:10you can't really argue with that.
01:13And that's before any discounts or sales coming later in the year.
01:16And in fact, all three 55, 65 and 77-inch models
01:19are significantly cheaper than before.
01:22However, you are still paying a premium for the G series,
01:25aka the gallery design, and there's a couple of reasons for that.
01:28Oh, and by the way, if you guys do enjoy the video,
01:31then a cheeky like and subscribe would be amazing. Cheers.
01:34So what makes the G series and this G1 special?
01:37Well, firstly, it has this nifty super low-profile
01:40wall-mounting bracket. Both the TV and the bracket
01:43are exactly the same design as last year's G10,
01:46but it means the TV can sit flush against the wall.
01:50And it is all thanks to this guy. Now, you don't actually
01:53get any feet included, although there are some optional extras,
01:56although they sit right at the edge of the screen. So if you are getting
01:59a bigger model, then, well, make sure you've got a big TV stand as well.
02:02But the gallery really is designed to be wall-mounted.
02:05Although I have to say that routing the cables and then hiding them
02:08can be a little bit finicky. I still wish LG would offer a separate
02:11I.O. box. But once you're all set, it looks incredible
02:14and there's just no wasted space.
02:18I am actually moving house in a few weeks, but at the moment
02:21my living room space is pretty small.
02:24What I like about this is that if I had a regular 77-inch TV
02:27on my TV stand, because it would be a couple of feet forward,
02:30it would look even, well, more excessive for the
02:33size room I'm in. But because this is wall-mounted and just
02:36a little bit further back from where I sit, which is actually right here,
02:39I can just about get away with having the bigger screen size.
02:42Although, as you can see, I do still have this TV stand and a soundbar
02:45because while the TV's built-in speakers are pretty good,
02:48they do lack in bass. So I would recommend pairing this with
02:51a good soundbar or speaker system, especially as the
02:54HDMI ports support the higher quality eARC standard
02:57as well as Dolby Atmos. But now there's another
03:00big reason why you may want to spend the extra cash on a G
03:03or even a Z series, is these two are the only models
03:06to feature LG's next generation OLED EVO technology.
03:09And this combines the evolution of the panel
03:12and also the new processor to give us a brighter
03:15and higher quality picture. Now what's interesting
03:18is that I actually only measured about a 10% higher peak brightness
03:21over last year's G10, but across the full screen
03:24I measured up to 20% higher brightness,
03:27which does make a difference. So I think LG's
03:30marketing is actually pretty bang on by calling this the
03:33OLED EVO. It's an evolution rather than a revolution.
03:36And really, it's the cherry on top of a TV
03:39that delivers a stunning picture with the same
03:42inky colours and impressive viewing angles as you would expect
03:45from a self-lit OLED where each pixel can
03:48turn itself on and off. Oh and actually, if you haven't watched it yet
03:51definitely check out Above All Mankind on Apple TV.
03:54I've just finished season 2 and that whole show feels like it was
03:57made for OLED.
04:00So it's cheaper, it's brighter
04:03and we're also getting a new processor with this. It's the
04:06let me get this right, the Alpha 9 Gen 4
04:09AI processor 4K. Catchy.
04:12Now it's always a little bit tricky to show this stuff off
04:15as it's partly just about the TV detecting what you're watching
04:18and then automatically choosing the right picture and sound modes
04:21and it's also partly about AI upscaling
04:24using LG's deep learning tech to identify faces
04:27and now objects and environments to enhance the picture
04:30and prioritise what we're focusing on.
04:33So that's all well and good but aside from maybe
04:36when this automatically switches to filmmaker mode
04:39or game optimiser, it's hard to really
04:42tangibly see the difference with these AI upscaling
04:45features. You kind of just have to trust it's working behind
04:48the scenes and giving you the best optimised image for what you're
04:51watching. Although side note, the AI improvements don't
04:54apply to certain copyrighted content or with
04:57say games consoles or PCs. However
05:00even if the effect is only subtle, I do still leave
05:03the AI modes turned on and then just forget about it and that's
05:06kind of the point. The only options you really need to think about are
05:09the picture modes and I would recommend using the ISF
05:12expert bright or dark modes most of the time
05:15although by default I do find them a little bit too warm so I
05:18adjust it to a more neutral colour temperature
05:21but I do also have auto filmmaker mode
05:24enabled so when I watch movies it switches to this
05:27which is ideal for movie purists in terms of colour
05:30accuracy and also turning off all the background processing.
05:33The most obvious
05:36change this year though is this. It's the whole new
05:39full screen dashboard. We're running on WebOS6
05:42which replaces the pretty familiar
05:45pop-up dashboard that we were used to and now we get this
05:48full screen homepage. And the idea is the more you
05:51use it, the more curated and relevant the recommended content
05:54will be. Essentially it'll figure out what you like to watch
05:57so it's more about the TV finding the content for you
06:00rather than you having to navigate all the apps and find it yourself.
06:03But I have to be honest, I don't know if I love
06:06this new full screen dashboard firstly because as you
06:09can see, I appreciate it's a bit out of focus, but it takes a few
06:12seconds to populate everything because there's so much content on
06:15screen. I also prefer the pop-up dashboard from before
06:18as it meant you could still watch what was playing in the background
06:21and also I just don't know why the top third of the screen
06:24needs to be dedicated to the weather and some hints and tips for
06:27using the TV. I mean it's not bad, I just liked
06:30how it was before. Although I might get used to it and also
06:33as I do use it for longer, hopefully these suggestions will become more
06:36personalized to me. I just kind of wish maybe there was an option
06:39to have either the full screen mode or just that sort of
06:42lower third or lower quarter pop-up dashboard
06:45that we're used to. Oh and also I have found adverts to be a little
06:48bit more pervasive now, but if you jump into the settings menu
06:51you can turn off tracking and promotional ads for the home screen
06:54so it's a relatively easy fix. But it's not just about
06:57this home screen because WebOS 6 also streamlines the menus.
07:00We still have the same quick settings bar where you can
07:03jump between picture and sound modes, but then we also have this new
07:06look full settings menu which feels a lot more streamlined
07:09and easy to navigate. All the important options and modes are
07:12front and center, but you can still go deep and fiddle
07:15around. But as you can see, we've also got this new grey
07:18theme to the UI, including the magic pointer.
07:21Speaking of which, we also have this all new
07:24magic remote and actually this is the first big redesign of this
07:27in quite a few years actually. Here is the previous
07:30one which you may be familiar with if I can bring it to the camera.
07:33I actually really like it. It does feel similar in the hand
07:36but this deeper groove underneath for your finger is more comfortable
07:39and there's just lots of little refinements that make it look and
07:42feel better to use. We do still have this dedicated
07:45mic button but unique to the G Series is the fact
07:48that we have far field microphones built in so what we can do
07:51is go, hey LG
07:54switch to PS5
07:57Did you hear the beep? And there we have it, PS5
08:00is ready to go which very neatly brings me into the next question
08:03of is this a good gaming TV? Well this won't
08:06take long because as we've come to expect from LG, the gaming
08:09credentials for this are top notch. This is genuinely
08:12one of the very best gaming TVs you can buy. 4K
08:15120Hz, variable refresh rates, ultra low latency modes
08:18G-Sync, FreeSync, Premium, fast response times
08:21and with 4 full fat HDMI 2.1 ports
08:24around the back, this is perfect for your Series X or your
08:27PS5 or even your gaming PC particularly
08:30if you have one of the latest RTX 3000 series cards
08:33with a 2.1 port. One of the coolest features
08:36though is this game optimiser menu which shows you
08:39whether the game is using G-Sync or FreeSync or the variable refresh
08:42and you can even adjust the picture modes to suit different
08:45games. So FPS for example brightens the shadows
08:48and makes it a little bit easier to see your enemies. I mean I'll take any help
08:51I can get.
08:54So altogether the G1
08:57is an incredible TV as you would expect although
09:00I would say it's more of a modest upgrade coming from last
09:03year's G10 but at the same time it's also significantly
09:06cheaper. As I mentioned at the beginning, better and cheaper
09:09is like the best combination. So that flush wall
09:12mounting gallery design, the higher brightness and all
09:15the bells and whistles you'd expect from a flagship TV
09:18for both, well, watching TV and just as importantly to me
09:21gaming. My only two wishes
09:24would be having maybe a separate I.O. box. It would just make
09:27the cabling and hiding it all a little bit easier and also perhaps
09:30that option to have either the full screen or just the lower third
09:33dashboard. But aside from that, I'm loving every minute
09:36with the G1 and if you do want to check this out for yourself, I will leave
09:39a link in the description below. But what about you? What TV
09:42are you using at the moment? And also if you are thinking maybe about upgrading
09:45this year, what model would you go for? Let me know
09:48in the comments below and also if you've got any questions at all about
09:51the G1 or LG's OLED range, again let me know in the comments.
09:54I read every single one and I'll do my best to answer it.
09:57Thank you so much for watching guys. Tap that subscribe button and ding
10:00that bell to be the first to see my new videos and I'll see you guys
10:03next time right here on The Tech Chap.
