00:00Hi there, the Met Office have issued an Amber Wind Warning for Western Scotland on Sunday
00:07as Storm Ashley brings widespread disruption and some serious impacts in places.
00:13Now, at the time of recording, Storm Ashley is just a shallow area of low pressure on
00:17the other side of the Atlantic, but during Saturday it gets picked up by the jet stream
00:21and then as Ashley moves on to the cold side of the jet stream, it spins up very quickly
00:26into a deep and significant area of low pressure arriving in the UK on Sunday.
00:32But on Friday there's a different area of low pressure bringing some disruption to the
00:36far north-west of the UK, a yellow warning in force for north-west Scotland because as
00:42wet and windy weather arrives and wind gusts peak at 50-60 mph for the Outer Hebrides,
00:48well that coincides with high tides so there could be some coastal impacts as well as impacts
00:53from the strong winds and heavy rain across Western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
00:57Elsewhere, Western England and Wales turn increasingly cloudy with some outbreaks of
01:01light rain moving in, the breeze picking up, but for the East Midlands, East Anglia and
01:05the South East, it will be a pleasant afternoon here with sunny spells, lighter winds and
01:09highs of 15-17 C. Not so pleasant towards the west as we end
01:14Friday afternoon, wet and windy weather moves in and that increasingly becomes a feature
01:20of the weather across Western England as well as Wales through the evening. Moving
01:25into the Midlands and central southern England by the early hours of Saturday and clearing
01:31skies return to Scotland and Northern Ireland with temperatures, as winds drop away, dipping
01:36to the low single figures in some sheltered spots. But a milder night to come across central
01:41and southern parts of the UK with the cloud and the rain and the breeze picking up overnight.
01:47Now the rain is slow to clear first thing Saturday across the Midlands and central southern
01:51England and really it takes until the middle of the afternoon to clear parts of East Anglia
01:55and the South East. But elsewhere, brighter skies return and actually it's a decent day
02:00for many with sunny spells and just a few showers for Western Scotland, Western England,
02:04Wales and Northern Ireland. Temperatures reaching 16 or 17 C although suppressed where we've
02:09got the rain continuing throughout much of the day in the east of England. Saturday evening,
02:15the showers largely fade away and then a clear end to the day with light winds. However,
02:21Storm Ashley is approaching and the cloud during the evening starts to build in the
02:26west and the winds pick up as well. This shows the wind gusts from Ashley increasing overnight
02:33and by dawn the first swathe of strong winds is pushing into western parts of the UK with
02:38coastal areas seeing 50-60 mph wind gusts. But the second swathe of strong winds is likely
02:43to be even more fierce with the wind gusts peaking around Western Scotland and perhaps
02:48exposed parts of Northern Ireland in excess of 70 mph. Now, Western Scotland later Sunday
02:55could see wind gusts of 70-80 mph and again coinciding with high tides could cause some
03:00serious impacts and that's why there's an amber warning in force. We'll keep you updated
