00:00If you grew up watching me on TV, it's probably time for you to go have a mammogram.
00:04So go get one.
00:05Boy Meets World actress Danielle Fishel is opening up about her cancer journey
00:10and spreading awareness about the importance of early detection.
00:13In an interview on Good Morning America,
00:15Fishel remembered the difficult moments when she shared the diagnosis with her husband.
00:19Having to break the news to my husband was really hard.
00:22Both of his parents passed from cancer.
00:24I waited until the kids went to bed and he actually brought it up.
00:27He said, still no results yet, huh?
00:29And I said, no, I did get the results back and I do have cancer.
00:33And I truly just saw the blood drain from his face.
00:36The 43-year-old mother of two was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ,
00:41which according to the Cleveland Clinic,
00:43is an early form of breast cancer, which is usually curable.
00:47My recovery is going well. I no longer have cancer.
00:50I do still need to make a decision moving forward about radiation.
00:53Back in August, Fishel revealed her diagnosis on her podcast,
00:57Pod Meets World, that she hosts with her former Boy Meets World co-stars,
01:01Ryder Strong and Wilfred L.
01:03They found it so, so, so early that I'm going to be fine.
01:09And so I want to share this because I hope that it will encourage anyone to get in there.
01:17If it's time for your appointment, if you've never had an appointment before, get in there.
01:22If you have to find out that you have cancer, find out when it's at stage zero.
01:27On Good Morning America, Fishel expressed the importance of making one's health a priority.
01:32I'm so grateful that I prioritized my health and said,
01:36I'm going to go and have this mammogram, and it changed my life.
01:38But what was it inside of you that said, no, I have to get this done?
01:41As I've gotten older and I've become a mom and a wife, and I started thinking,
01:46is being selfless actually the virtue we think it is, or is it really harming us?
01:53And I think it's really harming us, this idea of putting everybody else before yourself.
01:58And when it comes to my health, when it comes to my mental health,
02:01those are just two areas I'm not willing to sacrifice for anyone.
02:05I'm not willing to be selfless. I'm going to be selfish.
02:07The actress, who became well known for her role as Topanga,
02:11says she's channeling the character as she encourages others to stay on top of their health.
02:16I feel like it's a very Topanga thing to be saying to people,
02:20hey, your health matters. Your wellness matters.
02:24Can you please go have your preventative checkups?
