00:00Hey, how's it going? Dave2D here. This is a video about my thoughts on the iPhone XR.
00:08So, this is a phone that has received quite a bit of criticism online. I feel like when
00:12they announced the product, a lot of people, there was a shared sentiment that it was kind
00:16of like the derpy version of the iPhone this year. And it kind of is, like if you look
00:19at the specs, it's not particularly impressive. It has a low res screen, it has an IPS screen,
00:253 gigs of RAM, it doesn't have 3D touch, and it only has a single camera lens. And it still
00:29goes for $750. $750 goes really far in the smartphone world, especially in the Android
00:35world. And when you compare the specs of the iPhone XR to a lot of other devices that cost
00:40$750, it pales in comparison. But as I looked into the phone a little more, I felt like
00:46some of the specs that seemed really poor on paper were actually not all that important.
00:50And actually, Apple had created a phone that was, I think it's going to be a big seller
00:54for them. So, there is a rumor out there that Apple has increased production on the iPhone
00:59XR to account for 50% of their production right now. So, they're predicting that this
01:03thing is going to sell really well. And that screen is something that's been at the center
01:07of a lot of the discussions about the iPhone XR, because it's a low res panel, it's an
01:11IPS panel, it doesn't look nearly as good as the OLED panels of the two flagships. But
01:15Apple did it on purpose, right? They had to use a lower quality screen on their base model
01:20to sell these ones better, the two flagships. But I want to draw attention to the actual
01:25quality of that iPhone XR screen. Yes, it is an IPS panel, and yes, it is lower resolution,
01:31but it's still retina, still has true tone, still has P3 wide color gamut, still has a
01:35decent contrast ratio. It's not going to be as inky black as an OLED panel, and the viewing
01:40angles aren't as good, but it's still a really good screen. The iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus from
01:44last year, those were relatively good screens. Not as high res as the OLED panels on the
01:49iPhone X from last year. They were good screens. The iPhone XR has a significantly better screen
01:55than the iPhone 8 Plus from last year. Having super high pixel density isn't as important
01:59as good colors and good brightness. The other thing you have to keep in mind is that these
02:04phones, when they're available at the Apple Store, they're going to be, like, on the tables
02:09beside each other. Maybe not side by side, but very near to each other, so customers
02:13will be able to pick them up and compare them side by side. There is no way that the iPhone
02:17XS and XS Max are going to have, like, completely different looking screens from the iPhone
02:22XR. Yeah, the XS and XS Max are going to look better, but that XR is going to look comparable.
02:27It's not going to be as good, but it's not going to look like trash, even in a side to
02:31side comparison. The other thing I want to address is RAM. So the iPhone XR has 3 gigs
02:36of RAM, XS has 4, XS Max also has 4. Thing is, the iPhone X from last year also had 3
02:42gigs of RAM, and that device feels really fast still with iOS 12. A low res screen on
02:47the iPhone XR just makes it use less RAM, that's just how things work. 3 gigs of RAM
02:53on the XR is perfect, that's what it needs. And with that smaller amount of memory and
02:57lower res screen, the iPhone XR has a bigger battery than the iPhone XS. It's not as big
03:02as the XS Max, but it's a relatively big battery, and this is a device that has a 7nm chip,
03:07so it's using less power. It's got a low res screen, that big battery is going to last
03:12significantly longer than the other two flagships this year. It's going to be a long lasting
03:16phone, which is awesome. For the average user, battery life is huge. It's a little
03:20bit bigger of a phone, it's a little bit thicker, but it's going to be a long lasting phone.
03:24Now lastly I want to talk about the iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus from last year. So those
03:27phones launched at $700 and $800 last year, which were relatively expensive prices, but
03:33the iPhone XR is a much better phone than the 8 Plus from last year, by all accounts
03:39except for not having two lenses, but it's so much better of a phone. And at that price
03:44of $750, the iPhone XR I feel is like the best valued iPhone that Apple's put out in
03:50quite a few years. It's not like a steal. If you're looking for steals out there, it's
03:54stuff like the Poco phones dropping some real value bombs, but this is a really well priced
03:58iPhone. Now I'm not just going to sit here blindly praising Apple. As good of a job as
04:02they did with the XR pricing, there are significantly better phones out there if you're looking
04:06for value, but credit is due where credit has been earned. And I feel like for a product
04:11like the iPhone XR, you're getting like so much of the flagship features at 25% reduction
04:18in price. You're getting face ID, you're getting a large 6.1 inch screen with thin bezels,
04:23you're getting a really good camera, you're getting a new form factor so that it looks
04:26like one of the new generation of iPhones. You're getting a lot of good stuff with the
04:29iPhone XR at a price that feels a lot more reasonable than iPhones have been in the past.
04:35It's still not an amazing deal compared to Android phones, but for an Apple product,
04:39this is one of the best values we've seen in years. Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this
04:43video. Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it. See you guys next time.
