00:05Hey, how's it going? Dave2D here.
00:07So Apple just announced their new iPhones and a bunch of other hardware.
00:10So I thought I'd do a quick video kind of talking about my first impressions on all of this stuff.
00:14I'm gonna skip the Apple TV.
00:16I mean, it's really cool. 4K HDR, great hardware in there.
00:20But TVs are just not how I consume most of my media anymore.
00:24So it just doesn't interest me personally.
00:26I'm just gonna pass on that.
00:27The Apple Watch, I've always liked the idea of a smartwatch.
00:31I've tried several and I've always found them... I don't know.
00:35The battery life on smartwatches is what ruins it for me.
00:38Like having to charge them every day or at best like every 2-3 days for a flagship smartwatch.
00:43That's just not my thing.
00:46This new one, the Apple Watch Edition 3, same idea.
00:50You still have to charge it frequently.
00:51But because it has cellular capabilities, it could theoretically replace a phone for certain users.
00:57I don't think this is gonna make everyone switch over to Apple Watches and dump their phones.
01:01In fact, I don't think that you even can.
01:03I still feel like you need to have a phone.
01:05But I think it kind of breathes new life into the whole smartwatch genre.
01:10Now, this isn't the first time we've seen cell capabilities in a smartwatch.
01:13I've tried a couple.
01:14I even tried to use a Samsung smartwatch as like my only cellular device.
01:19It went terribly.
01:20But I feel like because Apple has big market share in the whole smartwatch industry,
01:25I don't know, I feel like this could be a good thing for them.
01:27The big thing though is the iPhone announcement.
01:30And I gotta be honest, going into this thing,
01:32I thought the iPhone X, as people thought it was called originally,
01:36I thought it would be way cooler and way better than it actually ended up being.
01:41So the iPhone 8, the regular looking iPhone,
01:44I feel like that thing is...
01:47Okay, in 2017, every single flagship out there has a better screen-to-body ratio than the Apple iPhone.
01:55So it's so weird that Apple's pulling out another like thick-bezeled phone right now.
01:59It just, it makes me die a little bit on the inside when I see that thing.
02:03But it is what it is.
02:04Now, the specs on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are significantly better than the specs on the 7 and the 7 Plus.
02:10That's just the nature of a next generation product.
02:13The bezels on the iPhone 8 just look so thick to me.
02:16I don't know, I'm at a loss of words.
02:19But I'm sure the phone has great hardware.
02:21It seems to have a significantly faster processor, especially for multi-core stuff.
02:25Wireless charging, slightly better screen.
02:27All good stuff, but because of the bezels, I just feel less enthusiastic about that phone.
02:32The iPhone X, however, really cool looking phone.
02:35I mean, we saw this thing all over the internet.
02:37It was leaked like crazy.
02:39But, it still looked really cool when they did the official announcement.
02:43Now, $1,000 for a phone feels insanely expensive to me.
02:46It's like, what, $200 more than the iPhone 8 Plus?
02:50Is it worth it? I don't know, I haven't used it.
02:53But I will say this.
02:55I made a video a couple weeks ago that talked about how the Note 8 was a poor value
02:59because you can get an S8 Plus that was almost identical in everything,
03:03except for the pen and the dual camera thing, to the Note 8.
03:07And so I said that the Note 8 wasn't a good, quote-unquote, value
03:10because you can get an S8 Plus, a great phone, for so much cheaper.
03:14And it had so many similar characteristics.
03:17With this thing, the iPhone X, you can't get anything like it.
03:20If you want to, you know what I mean?
03:22You can't get an iPhone 8 Plus, trim off the edges, and be like, hey, I have an iPhone X.
03:27This is why it costs as much as it does,
03:29and this is why I don't feel like it's a, quote-unquote, poorly priced phone.
03:34It's expensive as heck, and I don't think that it's a good value,
03:37but I don't think that Apple mispriced the phone.
03:40Granted, it's a terribly expensive phone.
03:43So, with this expensive price tag comes, I guess, some neat hardware.
03:48The camera features on the front seem pretty advanced, I guess,
03:51but after watching the keynote and seeing what those cameras can do,
03:54okay, yes, Face ID seems kind of interesting.
03:57I don't think I would prefer it over Touch ID if I had to choose between them.
04:01I feel like there's no way that in its current iteration, Face ID will be as fast as Touch ID,
04:06but that's to be seen.
04:08But the big thing for me is that all that camera hardware,
04:10they're showcasing stuff that I would never use,
04:12like animated emojis and other AR stuff with the front-facing camera.
04:16It's neat, and the hardware is very impressive,
04:19but how often am I going to use that?
04:20Like, for the first couple of days,
04:22and then the novelty for that kind of stuff is going to wear off real quick for most people.
04:26So, is there that much value in that front-facing camera tech?
04:29I don't know.
04:30I do love the way that the phone looks, though,
04:32like the rounded edges, the bezel-less look.
04:35I love that.
04:36I mean, the Essential phone, which is what I'm using a lot of recently,
04:39like, that bezel-less look is really cool.
04:42Now, there's one thing that bugs me.
04:44When they show the iPhone X displaying videos,
04:46the black bar cuts off the video screen,
04:48which I thought was really weird,
04:50because on the Essential phone, which is another bezel-less phone,
04:53they leave a black bar where the video is,
04:55so that you don't cut off any part of the video.
04:57And on the iPhone X, the video just runs right behind that black area.
05:02So, maybe you'll get used to it, but I think that's a little bit strange.
05:05See, the thing for me is for developers, like if you're an app or a game developer,
05:09you're going to have UI elements that, like, often go on the left side of the screen.
05:14Whether it's for games or for, like, you know, a calendar app or whatever it is,
05:18you'll sometimes have stuff there,
05:20and now, if you want to make your app or your game compatible with an iPhone X,
05:24you now have to reconfigure that whole side of the screen.
05:27And if you have, like, an existing game, like an older game,
05:29you'll have to go back into that stuff, redevelop it so that you kind of shift everything over.
05:33And the other thing is, like, if you adapt your game so that it looks proper on the iPhone X,
05:38on the regular iPhones or on an Android device,
05:41you now have a gap on the left side where those UI elements used to be,
05:44just so it could look proper on the iPhone X.
05:46Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:48Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
05:50See you guys next time.
