00:00The OnePlus 7 was just announced, it's a phone that I've actually been using for the past
00:06couple of weeks and I thought I would do a user experience review on it while also doing
00:11the water test.
00:12Now normally I would do a water test on this phone and then give you guys the results,
00:17but because of the nature of this phone, I worry about its ability to survive this water
00:22test.
00:23It's not kind of IP rated and there's some features which we'll get into later that kind
00:26of make it seem like it's more susceptible to water damage.
00:30So I'm going to start the timer, drop it in, and then start this review because I feel
00:36like that's the only way I can really do this.
00:38I really don't want to drop this in.
00:40Actually, I got to redo that timer.
00:44It's eight seconds early.
00:45Okay, starting now.
00:50Can we still see that?
00:51Sure.
00:52Let's roll with it.
00:53Okay.
00:54OnePlus 7 Pro.
00:56The most kind of pertinent feature of this phone is the screen.
01:00It's a high resolution screen, 1440p, higher than any other OnePlus phone to this date.
01:06And it's also a larger screen.
01:07It's a phone that's really big.
01:09If you look at pictures and stuff, it doesn't give a clear example of actually how big this
01:13phone is.
01:14It's something you actually want to pick up and try in a store if you can before you purchase
01:17it, because it is a noticeably bigger phone.
01:20Now the two main features of the screen are the 90 Hertz refresh rate, as well as the
01:26fact that it has no notch or no kind of cutouts or any kind of disruptions in the display
01:32while you're using the front panel.
01:35So the 90 Hertz refresh is something that, if you've never seen it before, it's very
01:40difficult to showcase this in a video.
01:43It's difficult because these videos are shot at 24 frames per second, and what you're seeing
01:47is happening at 60 or 90 frames per second.
01:50Basically, the whole UI, the whole phone becomes significantly smoother than it actually ... Hold
01:56on.
01:57Is that still going?
01:58It blacked out for a second, I thought.
02:00I think it's my periphery.
02:01I'm going to tilt this a little bit so I can see it a little bit better.
02:04Okay.
02:06But it just looks really smooth.
02:08If you can experience this thing in real life, you'll notice it.
02:11But I shot some slow motion of this just to kind of showcase to the best of my ability
02:15that a high refresh screen on a phone looks much better than a 60 frames per second screen.
02:21So the traditional kind of smartphone screen we're used to, 60 frames per second, 90 frames
02:25per second, you're seeing a lot more frames, a lot more animation frames.
02:29Everything looks better.
02:30Games, UI, just browsing around on the web, on Reddit, everything looks super smooth.
02:35It supposedly uses a little bit more battery.
02:37I didn't really notice that much a difference between running at 60 frames per second versus
02:4290, but there is supposed to be a battery difference between the two settings.
02:48The removal of the notch is actually something that looks really nice.
02:50A lot of companies have been in pursuit of that completely clean front facing screen.
02:55These guys have achieved it.
02:56Obviously, they've done a kind of trick with the camera to do it, but it is a very clean
03:01looking front and I think it makes content or any kind of anything on your phone look
03:04really nice.
03:05Now, there is one feature of the screen that I don't love.
03:09It's the edges.
03:11If you've used any kind of OnePlus phone in the past, they have a flat surface, like a
03:17flat glass surface.
03:19The OnePlus 7 Pro has a curved edge.
03:22I wish I could pull it out of there right now, but it's basically like the curved edge
03:27of a Samsung phone.
03:28It's got this curvature to the display that honestly looks really cool in pictures.
03:32I've talked about this in previous videos.
03:34It looks great in videos, looks great in commercials and pictures, but in terms of functionality,
03:40it doesn't really bring all that much to the table.
03:43So I feel like for a lot of users, if you're not used to that curved screen and you're
03:48just used to the regular kind of OnePlus flat display, it's going to be something that you
03:53have to either get used to or you'll just really dislike regardless of how much you
03:57use it.
03:58And I'm personally someone that prefers that flat display, so I've got to be honest, I
04:01don't like that curved edge.
04:03It's something that I personally don't really like very much, but the display is fantastic.
04:08I'd say it's actually one of the best looking displays in the entire market.
04:12Really high brightness, good colors with high refresh, and it's got that completely notchless
04:18punch hole-less image up front, which I really like.
04:21Now the purpose of this completely clean front is so that it looks a particular way, but
04:28to achieve this, they had to use this weird camera mechanism.
04:32So the camera is on this motorized mechanism that you have to activate to pop up.
04:37So if you're taking a selfie, you press the button and it'll pop up, but when it's retracted,
04:41it just tucks into the machine.
04:42You can't see any of the front-facing camera lenses or anything like that.
04:46It pops up pretty quickly, press the button and you're good to go, but when it comes to
04:50stuff like face unlock, it's a little bit different than normal.
04:53So if you activate face unlock, it'll pop up, it'll recognize your face, and then it'll
04:57pop back down.
04:58And it's actually slow enough, like that whole process of it popping up and popping back
05:02down is slow enough that it makes me not want to use face unlock, which is unfortunate because
05:06OnePlus phones have extremely fast face unlock features.
05:10On the OnePlus 6T, it's like, you look at it the wrong way, it'll unlock.
05:15It's that quick.
05:16And it's kind of annoying that you now have to deal with a slower kind of face unlock
05:20time.
05:22Because of it, I've actually resorted to using the fingerprint sensor.
05:25It's a very fast fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it's just something that
05:29I wish, I mean, there's not much they could have done, I'll be honest.
05:32They probably couldn't make it pop up and pop back down any faster, but it is an issue
05:37and I think most people that pick up this phone will be leaning towards that fingerprint
05:41unlock instead of the face unlock.
05:43The pop-up camera also has this feature that's kind of like a fall sensor.
05:47If it detects a big enough shift in the accelerometer, it'll actually retract the camera in an attempt
05:53to close up the camera system before it hits the ground.
05:56It's kind of like a safety mechanism, and it's cool that they thought of that.
05:59There's a couple other noteworthy features on the OnePlus 7 Pro.
06:02It now has stereo speakers.
06:03It's something that OnePlus phones have been missing forever, and it's nice to finally
06:07have them.
06:08I actually didn't realize it had stereo speakers at first, like I didn't read the instruction
06:11manual or anything, I just popped it open, I was like, wow, this sounds a lot better.
06:15It's been lacking for years, it's nice that they have it.
06:17It also has a new haptic engine.
06:19If you've used OnePlus phones in the past, you'll recognize that they just don't have
06:23a particularly strong vibratory motor.
06:26It is much improved on the OnePlus 7 Pro.
06:28It honestly feels like any of the best kind of haptic motors on the market, it's really
06:32nice.
06:33Okay, the camera on this phone.
06:36If you're interested, I mean, some people don't care about cameras, but for the people
06:39that do, it now rocks a 3 camera system, and I would say that's the biggest improvement
06:44in terms of the camera system.
06:46Forget about the processing and stuff like that.
06:48The fact that it has a wide angle, a standard, and a 3x zoom, that makes, for me personally,
06:54that just what makes this camera system much more useful and just much better than the
06:58previous versions.
06:59I'm someone that enjoys the wide angle, that's how I use my smartphones, I like to take family
07:04pictures and just pictures of stuff and do it to see more stuff in the photo, something
07:08I really like.
07:10But I wouldn't say that the image quality itself has improved a lot.
07:14It feels very OnePlus still, if you zoom in and you look for imperfections, you're going
07:18to find them, but the image quality on this camera is great.
07:21It's not the best out there, but I'm very satisfied with it, and I think most people
07:24that purchase this phone will be happy with it.
07:27It's also a very fast phone, it's running a Snapdragon 855, it's running UFS 3.0 storage,
07:32it's like incredibly fast storage speed.
07:34It's also running up to 12 gigs of RAM on the OnePlus 7 Pro, so speed is not an issue.
07:39It's a very fast overall system.
07:42The battery is also quite big, it's a 4000 mAh battery, and it's also running Warp Charge
07:46this year.
07:47If you're unfamiliar with Warp Charge, it's their 30 watt charger, it's like, it's a very
07:52fast charger.
07:53So, it'll fill, when I tested this a couple times, it filled to full in just under an
07:58hour and a half, and it hit the 50% mark at around 25 minutes.
08:02It's a, it's a very fast charge.
08:04In terms of battery life, I was actually getting around 7 to 8 hours of screen on time.
08:08I've actually been playing a lot of this stupid crab game, it's a terrible game, but I'm addicted
08:12to it.
08:13It's one of those like idle clickers.
08:14It uses a processor quite heavily, and even when I had this thing running, I was still
08:18getting like a solid 7 hours of screen on time every day.
08:22I want to talk about the pricing on this device.
08:25So, OnePlus, when they first started, put out a $300 phone.
08:30They were in the business of killing flagships.
08:32They were making flagship killers for really low pricing, and over the years they've kind
08:38of bumped up the price a little bit.
08:39Not unexpectedly, and also not in a manner that was unfair, I felt, it's just normal
08:44increases in price.
08:46And they've come out with a phone that is now $700.
08:49Now, they still have their regular OnePlus 7, like no one's forcing you to buy the OnePlus
08:547 Pro, but when I first found out about the pricing, I was a little bit disappointed.
09:00I would consider myself, not like an enthusiast, not like a OnePlus 7 enthusiast, but at least
09:04a OnePlus appreciator.
09:07I enjoy the brand, I like what they've done in the past, and I like what they try to do.
09:11And for them to drop a $700 phone felt so out of place for the brand.
09:17It just didn't feel like OnePlus.
09:18They've always been kind of that budget market, and kind of mid-tier, focusing on value, and
09:23suddenly they drop a $700 phone.
09:26It feels...
09:28It felt different.
09:29It almost felt...
09:32I was going to use the word offensive.
09:33That's the wrong word.
09:34It just felt unlike the brand.
09:37And I think for a lot of enthusiasts that have been with this brand, and kind of like
09:42cult members of the OnePlus cult, I can understand why people are disappointed that this phone
09:47is as expensive as it is.
09:50But then I took a step back and realized, this is not for the people that are buying
09:55the $400 or $500 phones.
09:57This is for a completely different segment of people who are buying phones.
10:01They still have the regular OnePlus 7 for that mid-tier market, but they have this for
10:06just a completely different segment of users.
10:08And I like the fact that they did this.
10:10I like the fact that they made something that feels different from the other people in that
10:17premium market.
10:18I like the fact that they did this in a smart way.
10:20They didn't just like copy another brand and take all the regular kind of flagship features
10:26and make another version of the superstar brands.
10:29They made their own variant of it.
10:30They spent money on the display.
10:32They skipped on IP rating and stuff like that.
10:35I'm surprised it's still going.
10:37It's been 13 minutes almost.
10:40Still alive.
10:41Okay.
10:42A lot of phone companies right now seem to be trying to extend into that mid-tier or
10:45even lower-tier market.
10:46Like we see Google come out with the Pixel 3a, and it's interesting to see a company
10:50like OnePlus kind of move in the opposite direction.
10:53They've often been in the mid-tier market, and now they're moving into the more expensive
10:56premium segment.
10:58If you're interested in this device, you're probably also looking at the Samsung S10 Plus.
11:03It's a phone that can also be purchased for around $700 at this point in time.
11:07That's just the nature of Samsung's pricing.
11:09It's gone down to that.
11:12If I had to choose between the two, the OnePlus phone has advantages like a 90 hertz screen
11:17with no notch, with cleaner software and more frequent software updates.
11:21The Samsung phone has stuff like wireless charging, a headphone jack.
11:25It has probably better customer support depending on where you live.
11:29I think for a lot of people, it's a tough decision, right?
11:31It's like, do you go with the well-known Samsung brand, or do you go with the lesser known
11:35or just less popular OnePlus brand that has all this cool stuff?
11:40If I had to choose between the two, not that I would, because truthfully, I like smaller
11:45phones.
11:46I've mentioned this earlier in the video, but this is a large phone.
11:48For me personally, this is too big of a phone for me.
11:51If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably choose ... I'm seeing things.
11:59I keep thinking that I'm seeing distortion on the screen, but it's not, but if I had
12:02to choose, I would be going for this phone only because of that screen.
12:07That 90 hertz screen looks fantastic.
12:10It's something that no other phone has right now that has all these other features.
12:13I think that if you appreciate that stuff like I do, I like high refresh gaming.
12:18I like high refresh everything.
12:20I like all my laptops and displays.
12:21I try to go for high refresh.
12:24If you appreciate that stuff, if you value that, then this is a really good pickup, but
12:28understand that it is a really big phone.
12:30Okay, I'm going to fish this out at this point, because it seems like it survived.
12:35Okay, it lived.
12:40I don't want to do the camera underwater.
12:43I don't want to ... Maybe I should, just to see.
12:49I feel like this is the thing that's going to break it, but I'm curious.
12:53It lasted like 16 minutes underwater, but I'm going to do a ... Yeah, I'll do it.
13:00Let's just do it.
13:01I'm going to pop out the camera underwater.
13:04I really don't want to do this, but just for the sake of completion, camera's extended,
13:10phone still works.
13:11I've retracted the camera.
13:15Still alive.
13:16Let me just double check the camera still works.
13:21Still pops up, goes back down.
13:23Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
13:25I know it was shot and feels very different from my regular videos, but I feel like I
13:28just had to do it like this because of the water test.
13:32Thanks for watching.
13:33Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
13:34See you guys next time.
