00:00Okay, I've finally done it
00:03BMW track car with the shifter that caused me to money shift. This is a UUC short shift kit
00:09All right, check it out. Look at that
00:12Absolutely stunning craftsmanship all the things that we need and I've got the DSSR
00:17Can't wait to finally have a shifter in my BMW that works
00:23All right, first thing we have to do is go from the top of the car move the old shifter there's a process to this
00:29Jay has the instructions. Jay, you want to bring them over?
00:33You guys remember Jay, right? Wave wave on the camera Jay. There is Jay from what what?
00:40Road to time attack. You'll know him from there
00:45They're detailed
00:48That is how many pages is this? There's like literally 16 pages
00:5220 21 pages of instructions. Are you actually going to read all that? It's okay. It's only your car
00:57The way to get this shift knob off is to grab it with two hands and pull straight up. There's no fancy twisting
01:03There's no tool. You literally just muscle it off and do your best not to hit yourself. Yeah, don't knock yourself out. Okay, so
01:15Okay, I think it'll work out
01:19Yeah, shift knob comes off nice ZHP knob you've seen that before
01:23All right, then we take this foam piece out
01:26a
01:28German car for you installation. We take this rubber kind of grommet out that I
01:37Wonder how much this part cost if I was to go buy it right now. All right
01:41There is the shift linkage down there
01:43Now we need to go to the underside of the car, which means putting it up
01:46And if you have the light up shift knob
01:48There'll be a plug that you'd have to unplug this around here that attaches to the shift knob that lights it up
01:53For you an old man because race car so we have to remove the
02:00Selector rod from the carrier. So let's see if I can go from this side
02:04I don't want to remove you can remove the exhaust and the drive shaft that would make this but a million times easier
02:10I am lazy and I know that this can be done without that. So I'm just gonna avoid it as you look up here
02:15This is the selector rod the bar underneath
02:17There's a little pin on the other side that you just pull back this way and the selector rod will come out
02:22In this direction. All right. So if you take a look, I just pop that linkage out a little yellow bushing on either side
02:29You can attach it detach it from the other side, but I'm not going to worry about that right now
02:33We're just gonna go up the stairs and pull the shifter out of the carrier
02:37All right, so we have to
02:40rotate this
02:41bushing cup thing in
02:43Such a way that it will release the shift linkage
02:47Sound like I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't never done this before so
02:51We're gonna wing it
03:01There okay, I did that by accident
03:02I'd love to be able to tell you how I did that
03:04But I just kind of turned that cup and it popped out. That was a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be
03:08All right, so here is the old shifter the new shifter and you get an idea of the distance from the carrier
03:23To the linkage there and from the carrier to the point inside the car. All right, you can see totally different design and
03:33To be perfectly honest the UUC one is better quality than the BMW
03:38this is a
03:40Delrin ball that goes in the carrier and the UUC one is just a smooth piece of
03:47Milled metal that's very lovely actually
03:53All right, so if you look way up there where that linkage attaches to the top
03:57This is this is the most difficult part to do if you lower the transmission a little bit by releasing those bolts
04:03This will be easier. But again, I'm lazy
04:04I'm pretty sure I can do without it because I've done it before
04:06So I'm just gonna reach up there's a screwdriver in this little clip. You have to pop up and that will release the linkage
04:22Keep the smaller stuff here I have
04:30All right, so we just got this little pin out here
04:35You can see really not easy to get to it's hard to get to the far side of it
04:39so just see if you can just put shove something in there and just pry aggressively because UUC provides you with a new one of
04:45These in the kit, which is really handy so you can damage this getting it out
04:49now we just reach up and take the carrier out because it just kind of slides into a
04:55Piece of piece of my car just fell on me
05:00And it's doing a good job of being stuck
05:04There it is and the bushing
05:10Okay, good now we got to rebuild this thing on the workbench we're gonna take this
05:18Old rubber bushing out of here and we've got UUC has given us Delrin replacements, which are very closely machined
05:26To fit in here. These just slip right in either side
05:29And
05:31Like so, okay, they're gonna test fit this new pin
05:36All right, which goes to do
05:39It goes in this way. Oh, that is very tight
05:43Yeah
05:44And it slides in perfectly there
05:47Okay, and that's the thing that clips on to this actually is on the top of the transmission. This sits like that
05:53Okay, so that is all
05:56ready to go this goes in after the
06:00I don't know that is tight. Holy
06:03After you slot it back in on the top of the transmission
06:07So I'm just gonna leave that just like that for now. Okay, next part you see is good. He's a very handy instructions
06:14So you're going to install the pivot height adapter assembly done on the workbench. Well, this is my workbench. So
06:22That's where we're at. Okay, so it says
06:26Put that little guy up
06:29Okay, that's what's in there
06:34Thread locker. Yeah
06:37Yeah, it looks like falls in there. Yeah, so thread locker a little bit in each hole make it easy
06:48Those of you that are bored watching
06:50Decided that I'll entertain you now by telling you that I think that I kind of really want to buy an
06:56An e39 m5 at some point. What do you think with that Jake?
07:03another old BMW
07:05Yes, another BMW that's probably more temperamental than this one
07:10So you might seem as I blow the engine up on that one then replace it with the the new v8
07:14Yeah
07:17You mean to be 10? Yes. Yes me 60
07:21That would be lovely don't that it would fit but not I kind of I currently am super interested for some reason
07:28I don't know why in
07:31V8 luxury sedans big VA luxury sedans is your masochist clearly. Yeah
07:37I don't really know why all of a sudden I have started to like these a lot, but oh
07:43for the
07:44Seriously, if you do think that I should get an e39 m5
07:48Let me know in the comments
07:50all right, so this
07:52Slide there's a little bushing that this slides into the back. This guy goes sits in the attachment the point up there
07:59I slide the pin through and clip it down. Nothing really much more to it
08:10There we go
08:13So
08:17I just greased this ball here. We put this in the
08:21Adjustment knob goes to the front and the bend goes to the back and to the left
08:26According to you you see so that just slides down in there
08:35Push everything down
08:37In there and there's a retaining c-clip that we put in I really don't want to drop this through the car
08:46Okay, so
08:48Half of it in
08:51Wouldn't be a very good surgeon
08:57This is incredibly true. Yeah
09:08Well, there's nothing connecting to the transmission
09:10This is the old selector rod and this is the you see dual shear selector rod or DSSR
09:16Now this is far more robust and it's got
09:20things on both sides
09:22Locks up the whole thing in a whole lot better. We're gonna attach this to use the shifter. We've got
09:28Brand-new bushings here and c-clips
09:30And I'll lubricate these pins. This is literally just plug and play if you don't have a bent one
09:35It doesn't really matter which side is it's gonna it's a complete mirror image
09:38So basically we just attach it to the bottom of the shifter. This is the old one. You see it's gonna look like this
09:44You put it on either side like that. It'll be a little bit of a tight fit pin goes through with the washer on either side
09:52Clip the c-clip in the pin and we're done. Let's go do that right now
09:56Where's it supposed to go? It attaches like on the bottom of a little hole that the shifter comes through
10:01Right, it goes on either side
10:06Well, it goes on this side too
10:10Highly annoying
10:21There we go
10:23Ah
10:27It's uh, it's it's shifted I gotta change gears
10:33There
10:37Parts left over
10:38Yeah, I know right all these parts left over. Are they supposed to be? It just means that I engineered it better Jay. Yep
10:44You've improved on the original design. Yes
10:49We're done
10:50Okay, that was annoying, um, let's blow the car and put all the rubber stuff back into the shift boot and whatnot
10:56Which I haven't had in a while
10:58All right. So just putting the rubber grommet back on. I haven't tried the shifter yet
11:02Jay tried it and ruined my first test and said it was amazing. So I'm super excited to
11:07Actually try it. I think that's back in. Did I put that in upside down? I don't care. I'm too excited
11:11This goes in
11:13Like that foam insulation
11:16which I probably because race car I should probably get rid of that but
11:19All right shift knob
11:26There it is it's in oh
11:30That's good
11:33Look how short that is. Oh
11:37Man that's feels that's like literally night and day. I
11:41Cannot wait to drive it like that initial impressions. Things are really really different in here
11:48It's almost like it's changed the entire feel of the car actually
11:51So I sent a quick email to Rob and I said like, you know, I couldn't believe how
11:56Good this shifter is right off the bat. Like I don't even drive it yet. I said it feels like my mx-5
12:02And he responded and he said actually a little bit of a background
12:06We use the mx-5 as a benchmark when we were designing this shifter
12:10The mx-5 is benchmarked as a really good shifter
12:13And same with the s2k because the transmission location is right below where the actual shifter is
12:19so there's no linkage really it just goes right into the transmission you select the gears directly and
12:25for a car in my e46 that has
12:28The the selector rod and it has the carrier and all that stuff that you saw in the install
12:33This is as close to a Miata
12:35I think as you could possibly get so just the quality of the shifter itself as you saw is incredibly
12:41Incredibly good. Everything is machined very carefully and the tolerances between pieces are very very tight
12:48it's not like
12:50Incredibly insanely short like it's not like the throws are like ridiculously short like you can get in some short shifters
12:57So that means that the effort hasn't increased because if you shorten the throws too much the effort of shifting increases too much
13:05I don't like that. So this has a good throw distance
13:09I would say that don't quote me on this, but I would say that it's about
13:12The same or maybe a tiny little bit longer than a stock Toyota 86 or like Subaru BRZ shifter
13:20So if you've been in one of those you can kind of benchmark that but this feels better than this
13:23There's just like a small motion in between gears and there's an incredibly obvious
13:28Click when it goes into gear it doesn't feel like notchy and annoying
13:33It just feels very very obvious when you get into gear. I just
13:38Just look down at my gauges and they're not working
13:42Yeah, I'm not making that up. In the middle of my car review
13:45I just looked down and my gauges actually aren't working. Are my headlights on? We're gonna restart the car
13:51Right in the middle of a sorry UUC for hijacking your car review with BMW. Oh my god
13:57My dials aren't working on my car
13:59I
14:04Let it sit at Jay's garage for like three days
14:11This car it's just literally
14:18That's my dials right now
14:21That's me revving the car
14:23The airbag lights still on
14:25Okay, let's finish up this UUC shifter review. Sorry UUC for hijacking that with that little bit of entertainment
14:31So I still have a tiny little bit of play in my actual shifter mechanism
14:35And I think that's because the the carrier bushing that I don't know if that's the right name for it
14:39The one at the back where the carrier actually sits in is old. That's the only thing that hasn't been replaced
14:44So I'm gonna go and replace that and I have a feeling that's gonna tighten
14:47everything up
14:49But yeah, so other than that I
14:54Have exactly zero faults with the shifter
14:59Truly, I am beyond satisfied
15:02Without going to one of those like crazy CAE shifters
15:05That's like way up here and has like the other crazy linkage. That's you know, very race car ish
15:10I don't see I can't imagine that another alternative whatever other brands that are out there for short shifters
15:16Could be any better than this
15:19Honestly, honestly, I'm truly saying that genuinely to you right now
15:22I know there's other brands out there and I'm sure that they're just as good
15:26But I can tell you that I can't imagine that it's any better than this because I love the way this feels
15:32The effort isn't too big
15:33The the shifts are so obvious what gear you're in
15:37Coming from a guy that money shifted because he thought he put his car in fourth gear and he actually put it in second
15:42This is a welcome addition to the track car world
15:45This is also adjustable too so I can actually adjust the the height of the shifter
15:49So I might play around with that and find something that I like
15:51because I could actually extend the shift knob up a little bit higher closer to the steering wheel for those short quick shifts to the
15:59Movements from the steering wheel to the shifter when you're on the track and you have to do a shift really quickly
16:03But yeah, you see short shifter. Oh and the the I have the dual shear selector rod as well and that just
16:11Strengthened everything that's kind of the way that I would describe that made it very
16:16The whole thing feel more robust
16:18So you see shifter gets my vote. Absolutely. If you're looking for a short shift kit, I definitely recommend this one
16:27Put in the comments if you have any either alternatives that you think are better or worse or
16:32If you have a you used to shift to your well as well and you want to tell me what it's like
16:37But for me right now, this is I think all I need in my track car and I'm a very happy man now
16:41I have to go find out why the gauges on my car just completely up and stopped working
16:48If anybody has an answer to that feel free to also put that in the comments. Yeah. All right. Have a good day
17:06Oh
17:18Thank you
17:29So your best is a 128 eight that's terrible times you are very good on camera
17:36You
