00:00Hello. As you can probably hear, we're in the middle of a city. Because today, instead
00:12of doing a normal video like a road test or a track test or a drag race or something
00:17like that, we're going to go on a little bit of a mini Throttle House adventure.
00:21Yeah, because we've featured Rolls Royces before. And they're fancy. But the Spectre
00:28is a slightly different beast. One that they're still charging half a million dollars for.
00:33And if you're a half-million-dollar passenger car, you have to be the best. The superlative.
00:39That's a number that makes everyone from the nation this is made say, oh, blimey, I've
00:45got a cheap charge on that. Bloody hell.
00:48I'll just translate that. It's very bold of them to charge that much money, isn't it?
00:54Bloody hell. Wow.
00:55Yeah, so we've devised four tests that we think represent the four pillars of what
01:01makes a Rolls Royce a Rolls Royce.
01:04That is, the ultimate motor car.
01:09The ultimate motor car.
01:11It's my voice. It's my voice. It's my announcer voice. It's my voice. They're used to hearing
01:15it.
01:16No, I know.
01:17You're just mad that your voice can't go that low.
01:18No, it can.
01:19The ultimate.
01:20The ultimate motor car.
01:21No, you can't do it. That's why I did the line, you see?
01:25It's a Rolls Royce. It's a Rolls Royce.
01:56Even though its starting price puts it between the Ghost and the Phantom, the Spectre, in
02:03more ways than one, is a successor to the Phantom Coupe, a car that Rolls-Royce say
02:10was their previously sexiest offering.
02:13A car that, like many Rolls-Royces before and after it, had the beating heart of a carefully
02:19designed silky V12 engine.
02:23So we have to wonder, has some of that magic gone, because the new Spectre is a pure EV.
02:30Rolls can use all the fancy terminology they want, but now the chasm in propulsion technology
02:36between this half million dollar Rolls-Royce and, I don't know, a Kia, is narrower than
02:43ever.
02:44So for Rolls to really wow us now, it must pass these tests with flying colours.
02:52And it's all starting with the cornerstone of the brand.
02:58Effortlessness.
03:08What is effortlessness?
03:10Effortlessness.
03:11Effortlessness.
03:12Yes.
03:13So we've always said when we've tackled the luxury stuff, that the pinnacle of luxury
03:17is minimum input, maximum output.
03:20Yes.
03:21As a driver or a passenger of this car, I don't want to part with one calorie.
03:26No.
03:27Nothing must be burned.
03:28I don't want to feel tension in my neck as we accelerate.
03:30I just want to melt.
03:32I want to feel boneless.
03:34I am immediately melting in this car.
03:36It's nice, isn't it?
03:37It's just instantly different.
03:40It's instantly different, James, to anything else that you drive.
03:44The steering's light as well, even for the driver.
03:46It should be.
03:47A Rolls-Royce must be piloted with one pinky.
03:50That's probably in the book.
03:51I just made that up.
03:52Easily.
03:53Look at you go!
03:55That's just crazy, isn't it?
03:57This thing weighs over 6,000 pounds, and you have turned it around a corner with a pinky finger.
04:03I think I may have lost three calories there.
04:05It's unacceptable.
04:06But the other thing is the effortlessness in power, because we've lost the V12.
04:11We have the twin-turbo V12.
04:14The twin-turbo V12.
04:15Now we are down to just electric motors.
04:18577 horsepower.
04:22That cut in harder than I thought it would.
04:24I was expecting Rolls-Royce to attenuate our acceleration a little bit more than that.
04:32You can feel the weight on braking.
04:34You can feel it.
04:35That's properly rapid.
04:36That is fast, yes.
04:37I was not expecting that.
04:380-60 in just under 4.5 seconds.
04:40I'm pretty sure that the guy that gave us the presentation of this car was like,
04:43we don't want our passengers.
04:44No, he said we don't want 2 point something seconds.
04:484 seconds or near abouts in an EV still feels crazy quick.
04:53I mash it.
04:56It's still smooth.
04:57That's actually a little bit unnerving, honestly.
05:05You're not going to believe how fast that was just then.
05:08This might win the prize for hiding speed even more than the M5s.
05:14That was mad.
05:15I'm sorry, Toronto Police.
05:18For nothing.
05:19We were going exactly 100 km an hour.
05:22I looked down and we had already decelerated for a couple of seconds and I saw the speed.
05:26As long as you're in the fast lane.
05:27It did absolutely not feel.
05:33You know what?
05:34That's probably the ultimate expression of effortlessness I think I've ever seen.
05:37No, true effortlessness is how a Rolls-Royce deals with tarmacular adversity.
05:43Wait, before we do that.
05:46James.
05:47I'm wafting by the CN Tower.
05:49You are.
05:50In a gold Rolls-Royce.
05:52Let's go find some more challenging roads.
05:54All right, we're going to turn off.
05:56Rogers.
06:04Here we are.
06:05Tram-lined.
06:06We've picked the right city.
06:08Terrible roads.
06:11I know everyone from Michigan to New Orleans who's saying,
06:14well, come to where I live.
06:15No, it's bad.
06:16It's real bad here.
06:17It really is.
06:18Every single car that we test where I live isn't really a problem.
06:22And James goes, it's horrible.
06:23It's horrible on Toronto Road.
06:25I just can't do it.
06:27Every single time.
06:28This is not one of those cars though, is it?
06:29No, this is really quite lovely.
06:31You're aware of the surface of the road.
06:33It's not complete isolation.
06:35This doesn't actually have dampers for its dampers like the Ghost does.
06:39No, apparently it doesn't need it.
06:40It doesn't need them.
06:4130% more torsional rigidity.
06:44Whatever it is, it is as good, if not better, than any other Rolls we've driven.
06:49Yeah, it does the Rolls thing where they're not afraid of a little bit of rebound on the suspension.
06:55Right?
06:56It's not so German and it's like, no, you're done now.
07:00Right?
07:01It's very, it just lets the car move and just float over top of all of the bumps.
07:06It's the signature.
07:08It's the characteristic of the Rolls-Royce.
07:10It's Bruce Lee.
07:11Bruce Lee actually helped design this particular car.
07:13He said, be like water, my friend.
07:15Ah, I see.
07:16Fluid, yeah.
07:17Flow over the rocks.
07:19We're going over cracks, bumps, tram lines, and there's just like, I can feel it ever so slightly in my arms.
07:27But I think that's only because of the absence of all other types of vibrations.
07:32Look at that.
07:33We just went through about 19 tram line street car things.
07:37It's barely, it's barely.
07:39This is passing with flying colors so far, I will say.
07:42On effortlessness?
07:43On effortlessness, yes.
07:44All right.
07:45That's the end of chapter one.
07:46Chapter two.
07:47The car is effortless.
07:51Silence is golden.
07:55Okay, so needless to say, it is very quiet in here.
07:59Very quiet indeed.
08:00We're under a bridge.
08:02There's street cars going past.
08:06The loudest thing is the brakes.
08:08But if you are, for some reason, not married to the sound of silence and complete isolation,
08:13Rolls-Royce now has a Rolls-Royce sound for this electric car that generates EV sound.
08:20So if I accelerate here.
08:25It's a bit orchestral.
08:27They said it's not Hans Zimmer, but it's derivative.
08:30He could have done it.
08:31He could have.
08:32Hold on, I just want, there's a bus.
08:33Yeah, I know.
08:36You ready? You ready to experience this?
08:38Ready?
08:43This is crazy.
08:44You know what, though?
08:45I feel like that's not good enough of a test to test the sound isolation.
08:48Because I don't know if you remember, but when we first drove a Rolls-Royce Phantom,
08:52we were in Los Angeles, and we drove by a concert hall, like a rock concert was going on.
08:58Yeah, I'll never forget it.
09:00We had no idea.
09:01Someone waved to us and wanted to say hi, so we put the window down,
09:05and literally it was like walking into a room with a band playing.
09:09I could not believe the difference between the window up and the window down.
09:13And I kind of want to test that.
09:15I'm going to recreate that.
09:16I don't think you can recreate that.
09:18I am literally going to recreate it.
09:20Turn right up here.
09:26Check it out.
09:27What's going on?
09:28Steve's Music, famous music store.
09:30Yeah.
09:31I called ahead and set this up.
09:33It's ridiculous.
09:34I'm just recreating.
09:35I'm recreating the moment in LA.
09:36I want to do it for real.
09:38They're going to play music.
09:39We're going to put the window down and then up,
09:42and we're going to see just how silent it actually gets.
09:46This is as real as it gets.
09:48Yeah, it's ridiculous.
09:49Get in the car.
10:01Good?
10:02All right, here we go.
10:08That is absolutely insane.
10:10The drums are right there.
10:12They're literally three feet.
10:14Ready?
10:20This is the coolest casting I've ever done on Final Fantasy.
10:23This is the coolest casting I've ever done on Final Fantasy.
10:25This is the coolest casting I've ever done on Final Fantasy.
10:28This is the coolest casting I've ever done on Final Fantasy.
10:34That is outrageous.
10:37That is outrageous.
10:47It's a public disturbance, but it's a private enterprise in here.
10:51Wow.
10:52I'm shaking.
10:53I did not expect it to be that much of a light switch window.
10:56It's so awesome.
10:57It's so awesome.
10:58Okay.
10:59All right, silence.
11:00Moving on.
11:01Silence is golden.
11:02What's chapter three?
11:04Let's find out.
11:08It's what's on the inside that counts.
11:12All right, quick recap.
11:14So, we have established that the car is indeed quite quiet.
11:17Quite quiet.
11:18Quite quiet indeed.
11:19And from a perspective of smoothness and power and ride,
11:26everything is calibrated perfectly.
11:28As far as I can tell, driving it right now,
11:31it feels exactly like the best possible tuned version of a Rolls-Royce
11:36that had a twin-turbo V12.
11:38But there are two pillars left.
11:39There are two pillars.
11:40Very important ones.
11:42And it's what's on the inside that counts,
11:45because your experience of this car is from here.
11:48And now that we're in the Spectre, there's a new thing.
11:51We get starlight doors.
11:55Okay.
11:56Listen, I've got a problem.
11:58What is Rolls-Royce's thing?
12:01What is that special phrase that they always say?
12:03Making you feel like you've got the money's worth.
12:06Got the money's worth.
12:07That doesn't sound like I'm a Rolls-Royce press release, does it?
12:09No, I know.
12:10I feel like they're a little bit more eloquent than that.
12:124,796 stars laid these doors.
12:15No, it's not good enough.
12:16No, because there's 5,000 in the ceiling.
12:18No.
12:19There's another 5,000 here.
12:20That's 15,000 stars, Thomas.
12:21I have two words for you.
12:23You're going to be a star.
12:24Post-opulence.
12:25It should be absolutely understated.
12:28And don't get me wrong, some of it is.
12:30For example, this gauge cluster tells me literally nothing.
12:34Well, that gauge cluster is actually from factory,
12:37digitally yellow.
12:39Yeah.
12:40Or gold.
12:41Yeah, that's pretty...
12:42You have to choose when you specify your vehicle
12:45what color your gauge cluster is.
12:47And you can't change it now.
12:48You can't change it digitally.
12:49You can't change it, so you must choose the digital color,
12:51even though with a single button.
12:53But the thing is that Rolls wants to minimize buttons.
12:56In fact, this infotainment system,
12:58which is based off of BMWs,
13:00is aggressively simplified.
13:02It is.
13:03Aggressively simplified.
13:04And the first time we ever had a Rolls-Royce,
13:06which was a Phantom,
13:07the infotainment showed a 7 Series in the screen.
13:10Yes.
13:11But we've tested this,
13:12and now, not only does it show the vehicle we're in,
13:15it's the same color as our vehicle.
13:17It is actually a Spectre, and it is in our color.
13:19Even in the 3D parking.
13:20So that's a pass.
13:21That's a pass.
13:22Yes.
13:23Listen, you're talking about beautifully stitched stuff.
13:25You've got stitching on the stalks.
13:27Yeah, the stalks are very nice.
13:29The whole thing, but...
13:3015,000 stars, Thomas.
13:31There's just...
13:32How many stars are in the galaxy?
13:33There's too many stars.
13:34How many stars are in the Milky Way?
13:35Billions and billions and billions.
13:36Yeah, like 400 billion.
13:38Yeah.
13:39So it's less than that, and therefore not too flashy.
13:41No, because I promise you that you can do absolute comfort,
13:45because you agree these seats are incredibly comfortable.
13:47They're very comfortable.
13:48And we've tested the rear seats.
13:49Yeah.
13:50And they're incredibly comfortable.
13:51There's space in the back there, yeah.
13:52Yeah.
13:53You can do comfort and understated classiness
13:57while using absolutely the best materials that you can buy.
14:01You know what?
14:02I'm going to prove it to you.
14:03Is there another band somewhere?
14:05Where are we?
14:06No.
14:07Mjölk.
14:08Mjölk.
14:09Mjölk.
14:11Isn't that the hammer from Thor?
14:12No, no, Mjölk.
14:13We're going to Mjölk.
14:16That's a metaphor.
14:17We're going to Mjölk.
14:18Yep.
14:24Mjölk.
14:25Mjölk.
14:26What is it?
14:27It's Mjölk.
14:28Well, first of all, it's fun to say.
14:29Yeah, Mjölk.
14:30Second of all, it is a furniture store that I found on the Internet.
14:33Right.
14:34And they make furniture that proves that you can have something
14:38that is comfortable, well-made, and understated.
14:43All right.
14:44Go on.
14:45Let's do it.
14:49In you go.
14:50Okay.
14:51Yeah, see?
14:53You're in the land of minimalism.
14:56I think it's that.
15:00Are those spoons?
15:01Oh, here it is.
15:02Here it is.
15:03Come, come, come, come.
15:04Sit.
15:05Okay?
15:06This is the chair.
15:08Okay.
15:09All right.
15:10It says a little bit right here.
15:11It folds out.
15:12It comes with a glass for enjoying your whiskey.
15:14Now, this is handmade in Denmark with walnut.
15:18Yeah.
15:19And it's got rawhide as the leather.
15:21Now, just like a Rolls Royce, the expectation of quality for this leather is of the utmost.
15:28Right.
15:29Which means that they actually wrap the posts in the field where the cows live so that they can't be scarred or marked by any sort of cuts or abrasions.
15:37These cows can live a good life.
15:38Right?
15:39Now, answer these questions.
15:40Is this comfortable?
15:41Yeah, it's comfortable.
15:42Yes.
15:43Does it feel well made?
15:44Very well made.
15:45Do you feel fancy?
15:46I feel like I could read a book.
15:49Right.
15:50Yeah.
15:51Do you see an LED light anywhere?
15:54No.
15:55Right.
15:56There you go.
15:57How much is this?
15:58$20,000.
15:59That's ridiculous.
16:01Ok.
16:02So, I get your point, but I'm looking here.
16:05You don't have to do the starlight, the hand-placed stars in the doors.
16:10Ok.
16:11There's an option for Cannondale wood.
16:13What's Cannondale wood?
16:15I don't know.
16:16Cannondale wood, you're in the...
16:18He's nuts.
16:22World-class car reviewer.
16:25Cannondale wood is Rolls Royce's alternative.
16:28Ok, we're stopped.
16:29Let me see the photo.
16:30Ok.
16:34Ok.
16:35That's pretty milky.
16:36That's pretty milky.
16:37That's pretty milky.
16:38Alright, fair enough.
16:39It's Rolls Royce with a J.
16:41Rolls Royce.
16:42Rolls Royce.
16:43I wouldn't do this personally.
16:45I think it's a bit too much.
16:47But you can only get it on the Spectre.
16:49You can only get it on the Spectre.
16:50Ok, I get it.
16:51Listen, the lights are very cool.
16:52Here's the thing.
16:53The starry night headliner, which, as usual, is stunning.
16:57Also hand-placed.
16:59But it was the upper limit.
17:01It was the upper limit of what is...
17:03It's borderline tacky.
17:05It was borderline tacky.
17:07And now we've gone too far with this.
17:09So I would not option this personally.
17:11I would get Cannondale these nuts wood.
17:17But yes, otherwise, the rest of it in here is very similar to every other Rolls Royce we've driven.
17:22That is, everything is chrome-plated, extraordinarily high quality.
17:27We've got off, soft, medium and high for the fan setting.
17:32You've got the power reserve instead of the rev gauge.
17:35I don't need a rev gauge.
17:36I just need to know how much power I have left when I put my foot down.
17:39Which actually makes sense in an EV more than it does in an actual engine.
17:42And they haven't done anything too weird.
17:43There's nothing...
17:44Because it's an EV, there's not weird tech.
17:47There's not the crazy dash in the new EQS.
17:50No, what they have done is they've just made it a Rolls Royce.
17:53That's what we wanted them to do with the 7 Series, them, BMW.
17:57Yeah.
17:58And they actually did.
17:59They did.
18:00The 7 Series.
18:01So more manufacturers are starting to get it.
18:03Yes.
18:04Stop making it something crazy and futuristic.
18:06Just give us an EV version of the car we already love.
18:10Speaking of a car that we already love,
18:12I feel like we're not the only people that have been enjoying this car today.
18:15I can't believe how much attention...
18:16I can't decide whether it's because it's gold or...
18:19There's no way everyone knows this is the new Spectre.
18:21They're just seeing a Rolls Royce.
18:23Anyway, let's pull over and take a look.
18:25Yeah.
18:40I won, as usual.
18:42Okay, listen.
18:43Before we talk about whether or not this passed the final test,
18:46that is whether or not it has the presence of a Rolls
18:50and it makes you feel like you're a Rolls Royce owner.
18:53Because that's the fourth pillar, right?
18:54That's the fourth pillar.
18:55The intangible.
18:56The intangible.
18:57How do you feel when you're in or near a Rolls Royce?
18:59Because you could argue that 300 grand gets us to the three pillars.
19:02Yes, it does.
19:03Where's the extra 200?
19:05Okay.
19:06So before we do that, though, I just want to reiterate a few things.
19:08Yeah.
19:09Because as far as I can tell,
19:10has this car not passed all three of our tests pretty much perfectly?
19:12Annoyingly.
19:13Annoyingly.
19:14Annoyingly.
19:15It failed this and it sucks at that.
19:16But unfortunately, the EV powertrain fits the Rolls Royce thing.
19:21Yes.
19:22Wait.
19:23With one minor caveat.
19:24Well, actually two.
19:25I have two.
19:26I liked that when Rolls Royce did a twin turbocharged V12 so well
19:31that it felt like an EV.
19:33It's like this, like, ooh, this car feels like an EV.
19:35I don't miss it.
19:36You don't?
19:37No.
19:38First of all, I felt like that was trying to be this.
19:40Yeah.
19:41And also, contraceptively?
19:44No.
19:45No.
19:46No.
19:47I think controversially.
19:48Controversially.
19:49Yeah.
19:50Hey, it might also be a contraceptive if you get an EV.
19:52I don't think that V12 sounded that good.
19:55Well, it wasn't supposed to sound like anything.
19:57It was supposed to sound like this.
19:58That is nothing.
19:59But what you could hear didn't sound that good.
20:00That's fair, yeah.
20:01And what did we read?
20:02We read in the press release.
20:03Yeah.
20:04Amongst all the ridiculous jargon that Rolls Royce uses,
20:07that 100 years ago, Mr. Rolls and Mr. Royce
20:12said that the electric car was going to be the future
20:15with its silence and its composure.
20:17I'm paraphrasing.
20:18Yeah.
20:19And a century later, the lazy Brits managed to do it.
20:23I think England won a World Cup closer to him saying that
20:27than to this car existing.
20:29I think you're probably right.
20:30But here's the other thing.
20:31What is one of the main, we've already talked about this,
20:33what are the main pillars of luxury?
20:35Effortlessness.
20:36Effortlessness and what is it, minimum?
20:39Minimum input to maximum output.
20:41And I will say that if you do run out of juice,
20:44you can't fix the problem in five minutes.
20:47And that sounds like an inconvenience to me.
20:50It has fast charging.
20:51If you happen to be in a place that doesn't have a lot of charging stations,
20:54you will at some point, you must be inconvenienced
20:56unless you literally have hired someone to take care of the whole thing
20:59and you never go more than 100 kilometers from your house.
21:01But you can go more than that.
21:02I think this range is pretty good.
21:03It is actually pretty good.
21:04Yeah.
21:05Well, I mean, it's not that hard to fit that much range in the car
21:08when it is, it just keeps going all the way back here.
21:12It has 700 kilograms of batteries,
21:14which I think is like 1,500 pounds to give or take.
21:17And Rolls-Royce say that that not only helps it with the center of gravity,
21:21but it adds instant sound insulation.
21:24I don't think I've heard any other EV manufacturer swing it as like,
21:28no, that's actually 1,500 pounds of sound insulation.
21:32We planned this from the start.
21:34I mean, to be fair to them,
21:35when they built the architecture of luxury, which this is on,
21:38they did plan for the EV.
21:39So instead of having to cram batteries somewhere in the front or the back,
21:43they just put them underneath.
21:46Yeah.
21:47And this has the widest grill of any Rolls-Royce,
21:50so it might be on the same platform.
21:51Like this way?
21:52Yeah.
21:53Oh.
21:54No, I think that they nailed the styling.
21:56I don't know if we've mentioned the color enough.
21:57Well, come over here and look,
21:58because when you stand right here with the sun directly behind you,
22:01you get the goldness.
22:02Well, this color is chartreuse.
22:04What is it?
22:05Chartreuse.
22:06I feel like you're not saying that right.
22:08Chartreuse.
22:09Okay.
22:10It sounds like a sneeze.
22:11Gesundheit.
22:12Yeah.
22:13Am I crazy?
22:14I see strong RS5 C-pillars.
22:18Just this bit right here?
22:19Yeah, I really see RS5.
22:20Yeah, there's a little bit of RS5 in there.
22:22But it is a giant car.
22:23It needs rear-wheel steer.
22:24It has 23-inch rims.
22:26And this often is going to be seen in two-tone.
22:29I think they made the Spectre with two-tone in mind.
22:32But I think in full gold with a bit of olive tint, I don't know.
22:37It is, listen, it has a lot of presence.
22:40It absolutely has a lot of presence.
22:42And we have got so much attention in this car.
22:45You pretty much can't go anywhere with it.
22:47It has been posted to the local Toronto car spotting group
22:50when we were at Steve's Music.
22:51Within minutes?
22:52Within minutes.
22:53Yeah.
22:54It's literally since you've watched that it has happened.
22:56But we're not in those pictures.
22:58I don't feel seen enough.
23:01That's where the money is?
23:02What's the title of the chapter?
23:03Me, me, me, me.
23:05Mine, mine, mine, mine.
23:08Now, now, now.
23:10All right.
23:11Dustin Hoffman.
23:12Come on.
23:13Okay, so you are what?
23:15I present to you gold-flaked donuts.
23:19Have one.
23:20There you go.
23:21This is 24-carat gold.
23:23I don't want to know how much these are.
23:25Why are they so small?
23:26A pack of these donuts was $55.
23:29That's disgraceful.
23:30It is disgraceful.
23:31But this might do the trick.
23:33You think this isn't enough on its own?
23:34This isn't enough on its own.
23:35You want to make this a more Instagrammable moment?
23:37Yeah, all right, ready?
23:38Hang on, hold on.
23:39We've got Instagram.
23:40Oh, you want to?
23:41Okay.
23:42Yeah.
23:43Okay, with the rolls.
23:44See, the car is so big, we can't actually get it in the shot.
23:46You ready?
23:47Yeah, go.
23:49Okay.
23:50All right, hopefully someone else takes our picture.
23:53I got stuff.
23:55Hi.
23:56This is the extra 200 gram.
23:58This is the whole way.
23:59Fourth pillar to be seen.
24:03These suck.
24:11That was an interesting day.
24:13A day of loud noises.
24:19And quiet ones.
24:21Brash colours and soft bumps.
24:25The Spectre is a masterclass in luxury.
24:29One that filled us with as much satisfaction to cart around in,
24:33as it did guilt.
24:35Sort of how first class passengers on a flight must feel
24:38as the regular folk shuffle past them during the boarding process.
24:42Even just the little things make it feel special.
24:46Like the magnetic mechanism of the boot compartment
24:49or the feel of the release handle to get into the back seats,
24:53which, despite its sloping roof, can comfortably seat adults.
24:57Unless they're 6'6".
25:00Every part of it oozes an unmatched quality.
25:04It feels three levels above anything else on the road.
25:08And Mr Charles Rolls may have been a century ahead of his time
25:12because in losing its combustion engine,
25:15the Rolls-Royce Spectre has actually levelled up the passenger experience.
25:21So, is it a Rolls-Royce?
25:24Yeah, the best we've ever operated.
25:28Worth the half a million?
25:31I mean, what is money anyway?
25:35Sure, if they chuck in some 24 karat gold doughnuts
25:38and some Instagram followers, we're in.
25:42Thanks for watching.
