Chancellor Rachel Reeves says “conversations” between the government and DP World took place over the weekend so the company did not pull out of their one billion pounds investment in the Thames Gateway project. It comes after reports the P&O Ferries owner was set to shelve the announcement over calls from Transport Secretary Louise Haigh to boycott its subsidiary. Report by Blairm. 00:00We're really pleased that today we're able to unlock more than £60bn of private sector investment in the UK,
00:08including £1bn from DP World in that port project,
00:13which is so important to get new jobs paying decent wages for that community in Essex.
00:18Conversations, as you know, happened at the weekend to encourage them to make that investment.
00:23That investment is now being made in Britain, and DP World can see the benefits of investing in the UK,
00:31as can so many other businesses who are announcing hundreds of millions, in some cases billions of pounds of investment.
00:37Under the last government, it was possible to engage in practices like fire and rehire and to have exploitative zero-hour contracts.
00:45We introduced legislation to Parliament last week that will make those practices unlawful.
00:50And that is the leadership that this government is showing.
00:54And any company employing people in the UK will have to abide by that legislation.
00:59That's the change that this government is bringing to make sure that work always pays
01:04and to ensure that people who go out to work have the security and dignity that should always come from having a job.
