00:00This is the German Touring Car Masters, today coming to you from the street course in Nuremberg,
00:12Germany.
00:13It's called the Norris Ring.
00:32Welcome to the idyllic Nuremberg.
00:35The Norris Ring is located in a park just outside the city.
00:39The Dutzendteich, a lake, located in the middle of the park.
00:43The fans can take it easy, waiting for all the racing action.
00:47There's plenty of relaxation, but once a year, the largest crowd of the season comes
00:53to the Norris Ring.
00:56The Speed Weekend.
00:58The fans get to see all the action, uptight and personal.
01:04They can walk the pits and certainly get all the autographs they could ever imagine.
01:17Over 100,000 fans will have come to this track this weekend.
01:24It's the largest crowd in Germany for an event outside of Formula One.
01:41But when the autographs are over, it's time to take a look at the course.
01:47The drivers come out to greet the fans.
01:50This is a tough course.
01:51It's only 1.42 miles long.
01:53There are two curves and an S. That's all there is.
01:56And yet it's one of the most demanding courses for the drivers and one of the most exciting
02:01courses for the fans.
02:03Top speed around 150 miles an hour.
02:06A surprise on the outside pole is Marcel Thiemann, one of the new drivers in the field.
02:12I will see.
02:15I guess it should be quite okay.
02:16We are in the first row, so next to Bernd Schneider.
02:19I guess if it's not raining, we should be in a good position with our tires, with our
02:24race set up that we found on the weekend, and hopefully it's good enough to finish on
02:28the podium.
02:29Who knows?
02:32So here is the front row.
02:33Bernd Schneider on the pole for the second time this season.
02:36Thiemann with his best start ever.
02:38On the next row, the Mercedes of Alsten and Binkelhoff.
02:41The best performance by an Opel this season.
02:44Jochen has to be optimistic going into the race.
02:47That's a quite good result.
02:49We all of Opel are quite happy, because from the last race at Sachsenring, we have done
02:54a lot of work, you know, to get a performance, to improve the car.
02:59And now, so, you know, step by step, we get the results.
03:04And we'll find out how that result is as the cars come up for the 15 laps, the qualifying
03:08race here at the Norrisring.
03:10Thiemann on the left in that blue Mercedes.
03:13Schneider gets the jump.
03:15The points leader in the season is out in front in that black Mercedes with the red
03:20mirrors.
03:21It's Uwe Alsten.
03:22Mercedes.
03:23And Alsten gets inside Thiemann.
03:24They bump a little bit.
03:25Here's the hairpin.
03:28Around the hairpin, they get down to a first gear corner at about 30 miles an hour.
03:32That's Turner, who went outside into the dirt there to get around the corner.
03:36Now they go into the S. Very bumpy.
03:38Watch the cars jump around.
03:41You have to have the right setup here in order to be able to get through quickly.
03:45Come around out of the S's.
03:48Line up now for another long straight that heads toward the Dutzendteich, the lake here
03:52in the park.
03:53Then it's again another hairpin, down to about 34, 35 miles an hour.
03:59It's a good passing point.
04:01And then the long straightaway once again.
04:04You want to get to top gear as quick as you can.
04:10Get up to about 140, 145 miles an hour before you have to break down once again into the
04:16hairpin.
04:17There are your leaders.
04:18Look at that.
04:19Binkelhoff in fourth position.
04:20Abt in the Audi is running fifth.
04:21Abt right there in that yellow Audi.
04:24And Huisman.
04:26The Dutchman spins.
04:27Boy, he's been good all weekend, and then he has that kind of a problem here.
04:32You miss your braking point, though.
04:33You're in serious trouble after that long straightaway.
04:37Here we work our way through the S's.
04:39Schneider out in front.
04:41And Olsen is running in second place.
04:43Thiemann is third.
04:44Then comes Winkelhoff, and then comes Abt.
04:46Take another look at that star.
04:47Look right there as Olsen got inside.
04:50Winkelhoff in that orange Opel tried to get inside and move up a position, but he couldn't
04:55because Thiemann held on to the outside and took over third place.
04:59Manuel Reuter spins here early.
05:02The car suddenly snaps on the rear end.
05:04I lost it.
05:05And I was really lucky that I hit another ball.
05:07So I would like to say it was my mistake, because we made also a small shut-up change
05:12on the rear, and the rear was really aggressive, and, okay.
05:19So a problem for the Opel, even though Winkelhoff is doing well.
05:22Here's the battle up in the front.
05:24That is Aiello getting inside of Salens, it looks like.
05:31And Laurent Aiello, who is the best non-Mercedes driver in the points race, trying to battle
05:39his way back.
05:40He took one race off to race at Le Mans.
05:42He finished second there, but it certainly helped hurt him, rather, in the points race
05:46here.
05:47Now you get a look at the straightaway, which leads down toward the Dutzentheister Lake.
05:52Here's the sharp left-hander.
05:54And Huisman's car is being pushed into the pits.
05:58A tough day.
06:00In the first lap, Timo Scheider and me, we had a little coming together.
06:03And after that, at the end of the straight, when I hit the brakes, the car just spun without
06:10no reason.
06:11So afterwards, we found out the front splitter on the right side was damaged, so maybe that
06:15caused the spin, but it was a lucky escape in the end.
06:20No one touched me, and I could follow the race for two laps, but decided to come in
06:24because it made no sense, and we just took the time to repair the car for the main race.
06:29It looked like we will have some rain, so still nothing lost from last position, I would
06:35say, in this case.
06:38And out in front, Bernd Schneider, the points leader, the man they call the dominator in
06:44the German Touring Car Series.
06:46The man has done just about everything you can imagine.
06:49He won the race, the qualifying race in Hockenheim.
06:52He won the main race in Hockenheim, and he won the main race at the Sachsenring.
06:58So he is definitely out in front, but the man in second place, Uwe Ahlsen, is man out
07:03to prove himself.
07:04He came from Opel and moved over to Mercedes as we take a look back at the action.
07:09As you can see here, there are some problems for Tomczek, lost the hood on his car, also
07:14got bumped around a little bit, so his aerodynamics are certainly off.
07:20Marcel Thiemann in that blue Mercedes, substituting for Meilander, who is still injured and out.
07:25But Ahlsen, who is running in front of him in that black Mercedes with the red mirrors,
07:30is the driver of note right now, because he came from Opel last year, has been working
07:36on learning to drive the Mercedes, he came in with a lot of publicity, and now all of
07:40a sudden he's up in second place and pushing Bernd Schneider.
07:45But Schneider is certainly going to be tough.
07:47Back there in fourth position, in that orange Opel, Joachim Winkelhock, boy has he had troubles
07:52this year.
07:53In fact, the first race of the season, didn't finish the qualifying race, and then besides
07:57that he didn't even start the next one, and he's had one of these uphill battles all season
08:01long.
08:02But it looks now that the Opel crew has got the car together, and they want to get the
08:06car preserved and get it into the feature race.
08:08I'm pretty sure that Joachim is not going to push too hard here, because he really wants
08:14to be able to be in a good position in the feature race.
08:16That was Marcel Fesler, who got by him.
08:23Christian Abt right now is the best Audi driver, sitting in there behind Winkelhock.
08:29Winkelhock gives a nice little nudge to Fesler, and loses a place to Christian Abt.
08:35So Winkelhock, who was trying to let Fesler know he was there and try to get by, lost
08:41the position in the process.
08:45And behind him is Peter Dunbrek, who has the car that is the sister car for Bernd Schneider.
08:54There you get a look at it.
08:56Winkelhock couldn't contest that pass whatsoever.
09:00This is Ekström, another of the young drivers from the Audi team with the yellow mirrors,
09:07and he's had a rearrangement in the back of his car.
09:09They're going to have to get that off, get him into the pits and see if they can get
09:14it off.
09:15Oh, it just came off on its own.
09:16That's going to be dangerous.
09:17It's going to sit on the course.
09:18There it is.
09:21Wow.
09:22That course worker's got some nerve.
09:26Bernd Schneider, your leader, took the lead from the pole position, and now is just running
09:33away with it.
09:35This qualifying race is the one that people want to finish to get ready for the feature.
09:38He takes the checkered flag, and Bernd Schneider wins it, Uwe Ahlsen is second, Thiemann is
09:43third, Fessler is fourth.
09:45Then comes Christian Abt, behind him is Jochen Winkelhock, and then comes Peter Dombrek.
09:50So that's how they set up here.
09:53Oh, and this replay, Aiello bumps into Jaeger, who also taps Manu, and they spin.
10:00Aiello gets through.
10:02Laurent probably should have backed off a little bit there, but he also wanted to charge.
10:08He had been way back in 19th starting position and needed to move up.
10:13Not too happy there, Norbert Haug from Mercedes, but on the other hand, he can't be too upset.
10:17His car is finished in the top four positions.
10:21Christian Abt in the Audi was fifth, and the Opel with a great performance coming in sixth.
10:26That's how it lined up in the qualifying race here at the Norris Ring in Nuremberg, Germany.
10:32One of the great parts about this particular race, besides the huge fans, are all the activities
10:37that go on with it.
10:38There are picnics, there are shows, there's a rock concert, but there also was a soccer tournament.
10:45And it was drivers who were featured, not regular soccer players.
10:54It turned out to be Mercedes against Opel, basically.
11:06Now we're going to find out what they can do on a soccer field.
11:09We know what they can do on a race track, but can they really play soccer?
11:36It was fun, and each one believed that I would battle to the end, but the other team won.
11:51They played well.
11:53We played hard and won.
11:55They had the will to win.
11:57We played worse, though, than we normally do.
12:00We play often.
12:01AMG has its own soccer team.
12:03They train on Wednesdays, but when I'm here, I train with them.
12:07They're actually better than what we saw today.
12:33I don't think I have the talent for soccer, but it's fun.
12:49I do love to play.
13:03My soccer performance, I would say that I should stay with motorsports.
13:33I scored a goal, not bad.
13:35It's tight here, it's always a Norris ring.
13:49Well, the fans are certainly ready for this one.
13:52Soccer players are behind us for the moment.
13:57We take a look at the field again.
13:59Olsen is on the second starting position, Thiemann is third.
14:04Fessler, who's right up there in the points, second in the points, is running in fourth
14:08position.
14:09Then comes the apt Audi and Jochen Winkelhock in the best Opel.
14:13So finally, the Opel is up near the front.
14:16Dumbrecht next to Michel Bartels.
14:19And then comes Timo Scheider and Laurent Aiello, an Opel and an Audi.
14:26Schneider is on the right.
14:28Uwe Olsen is on the left.
14:29And we're underway.
14:30The feature event, 44 laps around this 1.4 mile circuit in the city of Nuremberg.
14:38The Norris ring, heading into the hairpin.
14:43Let's see how we get through this time.
14:46This is always the most exciting point on this particular circuit.
14:49Did everybody get through?
14:50They certainly did.
14:51Down the straightaway, Schneider is out in front.
14:53Uwe Olsen is running second, a battle back there for third and fourth between Fessler
14:57and Timon.
14:58Winkelhock is sitting back and watching all the action in fifth position.
15:01Wu gets a little tight through the S's.
15:04Notice that brick wall.
15:05We'll talk a little more about that.
15:06Coming out of that S turn is a brick wall, which is a part of the monument here, where
15:10it's all around this park.
15:11They can't change it, and boy, can that be tough on some cars.
15:16Into the late curve, and we have some cars banging around.
15:20That is the Christian apt Audi in serious trouble.
15:25Cars got bunched up, and there was some bumping.
15:28Not sure how it got started, nor who was the one that sent the apt Audi off, but he's got
15:33serious problems.
15:38There are your top five, however.
15:41Winkelhock staying up in fifth position.
15:44The rest of the field sorting itself out.
15:54Sitting behind Winkelhock is David Salins in the Mercedes.
16:00He's a newcomer to the series.
16:01This is the apt Audi in the pits.
16:03They're going to see what they can do to get the car back out onto the circuit.
16:07They're taking off the front part of the car, and they're going to send him out without
16:11a hood.
16:12Uwe Ahlsen running in second place.
16:16Fessler is running third.
16:19Then comes Marcel Timon.
16:20Then comes Winkelhock.
16:22And Aiello now has moved up a spot.
16:24Into sixth position.
16:25And the rest of the field continues to work its way through here at the Norris Ring.
16:31Taking a look again at the start.
16:35Ahlsen, very smart, tucks in behind Bernd Schneider.
16:41Once you're in that position and can hold it down this straightaway section going into
16:44the hairpin, no one's going to really get by you.
16:47It's going to take somebody with a lot of nerve on the outside to be able to do it.
16:52You can see here and looking in the back there, Timon is trying to hold Fessler off
16:56as Ahlsen backs off.
16:58Fessler was able to get around, but look at this, Winkelhock gets inside Timon in that
17:03corner.
17:04It gets tight.
17:05Here's that action.
17:06It looks like App tried to cut inside and was bumped or bumped.
17:14Michel Bartels, and take a look from App's position, and then was hit front on.
17:23And that's what happened to him.
17:24And that's what it looks like now.
17:26The team's going to definitely have to get the hood ready so they can put one on there.
17:30He's going to be way down.
17:33Certainly not the most idealistic situation.
17:36There you see that cement wall.
17:38See how wide they come?
17:39Some of the drivers go out there almost touching the wall.
17:42In past years, one of the drivers, Kurt Thiem, used to use it once in a while to keep his
17:46car a little straight off those corners, but it is a dangerous thing to do.
17:49You can mess up your car real quick.
17:52But it's all part of a park here in the city of Nuremberg, and it's got a tradition.
17:56They've raced everything you can imagine here.
17:59Motorcycles, you name it.
18:02They've had sports prototypes.
18:05Right now it's the only street course that they're still running on in Germany.
18:08They used to have one in Singen in Berlin, but they're not there.
18:12Of course, the big question here is the braking.
18:15And look at that.
18:16Trying to do the braking situation, and gets through.
18:20Whoa, and Timo Scheider really cut inside to preserve at least that one position.
18:30That is Albers who is ahead of him.
18:37And Peter Dumbrek has come into the pits.
18:40When Dumbrek is in, you have to keep in mind that there is a mandatory pit stop in this race.
18:45They have to change the tires.
18:47Somewhere in this event.
18:48Now, tactically, do you do it early and then hope that it holds together, or do you wait
18:53until everybody else does it?
18:56The tire changes have been the key issue in a couple of races this season.
19:06There is Tom Cech.
19:07He is ahead of Peter Dumbrek.
19:13Dumbrek just coming out of the pits.
19:15Tom Cech, the 19-year-old who has done so well this season, impressed just about everybody.
19:21Dumbrek inside.
19:23Can Tom Cech come back?
19:24Doesn't look like it.
19:28Olsen locks up a little bit as they head off toward the Dutzendteich.
19:33And Dumbrek has gotten by Tom Cech.
19:38But Aiello, who had started 19th in the qualifying race, is up to 6th position.
19:46The only non-Mercedes driver who has a remote chance of catching Bert Schneider in the championship
19:51and we're only in the 5th event this season, the halfway point.
19:54Schneider has just been so dominant.
19:56He has basically controlled the season to a point that everybody else just kind of has
20:01to figure out who is going to try to come in 2nd.
20:03Continue watching the Dumbrek and Tom Cech battle.
20:08Schneider won in Hockenheim both races.
20:10He was 6th and 2nd at the Nürburgring.
20:123rd and 2nd at Ostersleben.
20:144th and 1st with a great performance at the Sachsenring.
20:16Schneider started 20th, finished 4th in the qualifying race, won the race.
20:22And of course here at the Norrisring he won the qualifying and is now out in front in the feature race.
20:27We're still watching here his teammate Peter Dumbrek leading Tom Cech.
20:31This is a battle back in the pack at this moment.
20:38Taking a look as here he comes.
20:40There is Bernd Schneider.
20:44Schneider, Olsen, Fessler, Thiemann, Winkelhock.
20:46They've stayed together here in the first part of the race.
20:49Pit stops probably could come up as a deciding factor here.
20:52Schneider, the young Opel driver, continues to do well.
20:55Running in 7th position.
20:57And Husemann, who had that problem in the first race, is running in 8th position.
21:00So he's had a very good race here.
21:03Particularly after all the problems in the first one.
21:04You're riding with Bernd Schneider once again heading up to the Dützentais, the lake.
21:08Manure is ahead of him.
21:09He's going to have to get by.
21:10Here he goes inside.
21:13Now he's got to get up to speed as quick as he can.
21:18Here comes Abt in.
21:20They're going to finally get the hood back on.
21:22Give him some fresh tires.
21:24This year, incidentally, or in this race rather,
21:26they're having a special sticker on the window on the driver's side.
21:29It's for the fans, really.
21:31Every time the drivers come in to make their pit for the tires in the second race,
21:36the sticker is taken off.
21:37So the fans have an idea who is pitted and who's not.
21:39Strictly for the fans, but very important because it keeps them in the race.
21:45Having a little bit of trouble getting that hood on.
21:49Should be ready.
21:50It's taking a little longer than they probably had hoped.
21:52Now he's ready.
21:55But he's down a couple of laps for sure.
21:57He's made some unscheduled pit stops because of that collision.
22:01Christian Abt, co-owner of Abt Sportsline and Abt Racing.
22:06They've come a long way.
22:07Won a race this year.
22:08Are in contention all the way around.
22:12Tremendous performance.
22:13Opel took over as the underdog after Audi had it last year.
22:17The Opel with the new car is certainly having their problems.
22:19And yet right now, they've come around.
22:21In the fifth race of the season, Vinklehawk is running in fifth position.
22:24Baron Schneider, still your leader.
22:27Uwe Ahlsen is second.
22:29Fesler third.
22:30Team on four.
22:31Mercedes one, two, three, and four.
22:32Opel is fifth.
22:33Audi is sixth.
22:37Manuel Reuter, a former champion, sitting back in tenth position.
22:40He has not had a great season himself.
22:43That's his car right there with the yellow sides on it, the Opel.
22:47He's certainly had his share of problems.
22:49That's Alan Minou who went off the course there.
22:51Or at least went out of the line anyway.
22:59Take a look at what happened here.
23:00Ah, that's what happened to Minou.
23:02He spun on his own.
23:03Nobody helped him.
23:05And that was why he was not quite in the same line as people might have expected him to be.
23:11Baron Schneider continues to lead here at the Norris Ring.
23:14Fifth event in the German Touring Car Masters 2001.
23:20Laurent Aiello making his charge from the back, trying to stay in the points race,
23:23has moved up once again behind Jochen Winkelhock.
23:27The best Opel so far today, and at this point, the best Opel so far this season.
23:33They've worked day and night.
23:35It's unbelievable.
23:36Once again, inside the car, down the long straightaway.
23:41Great fans here.
23:44And Aiello really is working on Winkelhock.
23:47He's pulled up behind him.
23:52Laurent, the former Touring Car Champion.
23:58Oh, and that is Olivier who spins.
24:03Can't afford to miss your braking point on this corner.
24:08And Aiello's dropped off just a little bit.
24:10Winkelhock pulling ahead of him.
24:11Running behind them is Timo Scheider.
24:16Then comes Husman.
24:21Here once again, Baron Schneider, the dominator in the German Touring Car Masters.
24:26Through the S.
24:27Out toward the concrete wall.
24:30Ahlson goes closer to the wall than
24:34Schneider does.
24:36More pit works for the Audis.
24:38Excuse me, that was an Opel.
24:40That was Michel Bartels.
24:44Michel Bartels in the Opel pitting.
24:51And here comes your leader.
24:53So Bartels
24:55drops back on this one.
24:56Uwe Ahlson inside of Bartels
25:00who has to make room for him.
25:01They're battling for the lead.
25:02Ahlson is staying.
25:04Schneider has not really been able to pull away from him.
25:07So Uwe Ahlson is
25:10staying in the hunt here
25:12knowing the pit stops are ahead
25:14and they're starting now.
25:19Uwe Aiello is in
25:22and the rest of the field starts to pit.
25:27Uwe Ahlson
25:29is in
25:31and the rest of the field starts to pit.
25:34The question is going to be now
25:35who pits first?
25:36Ahlson
25:37or Schneider?
25:41Aiello has pit.
25:44We're in the key moments now.
25:45This could be the deciding moment
25:47as far as this race is concerned.
25:50Who's going to be able to come up
25:51and make this work?
25:52Darren Turner
25:53spins
25:54going through the
25:55S-curve.
26:00And here are the top two.
26:01Ahlson seems to have pulled up
26:02just a little bit.
26:05Thiemann gets by
26:06Fessler
26:07who's got serious problems.
26:11Marcel Fessler
26:12has serious problems
26:13and is going to head to the pits.
26:14It's too bad.
26:15He was second in the points.
26:17Young Swiss driver
26:18doing well this season
26:19but here
26:20at the Norris Ring
26:21he's got bad problems.
26:25Something is definitely bent here.
26:28He won't be able to go much further.
26:29He won't be able to go much further
26:30I don't think.
26:36Marcel Fessler
26:37comes into the pits.
26:41We are now in the
26:4218th lap
26:43of
26:4444
26:45here at the Norris Ring.
26:48They're changing the tire
26:49but
26:50I don't think he's going to go out.
26:51There are other problems
26:52they can't fix.
26:54It's over.
26:56So Marcel Fessler
26:57has parked his Mercedes
26:58for the day.
27:01Very popular
27:02young Swiss driver.
27:10I touched the wall
27:11at the end of the Schuller S
27:12and after that
27:13there was some oversteer.
27:14The second time
27:15was simply too much.
27:17Something is bent
27:18or broken.
27:23The man
27:24that's not having any problems
27:25right here
27:26Bernd Schneider
27:27continues to roll
27:30a touring car expert
27:31in Germany
27:32one of the best.
27:34That's why they call him
27:35the Dominator
27:36and he certainly
27:37is doing that here.
27:43Laurent Aiello
27:44is going to have to go in
27:45for a stop and go.
27:47He was too fast
27:48on pit lane.
27:51He broke the speed limit
27:52so somewhere along the way
27:53Laurent Aiello
27:54who is doing so well
27:55is going to have to go in
27:56and lose
27:57time
27:58because of the stop and go
28:00and will probably
28:01take himself out
28:02of the top ten.
28:03That's a shame.
28:04He was up there
28:05to pick up some points
28:06at least to stay
28:07in some contention
28:08for the driver's title
28:09but
28:10it's going to be tough
28:11after this stop and go penalty.
28:13He can't be too happy
28:14about that.
28:20It is a little unusual
28:21because the drivers
28:22have a way
28:23to check that
28:24going in
28:25to come in
28:26and
28:27get the stop and go
28:28and
28:29oh well
28:30that's just one of the
28:31breaks of racing
28:32I guess.
28:38Ben Schneider
28:40has to be thinking
28:41about his pit stop now.
28:43Does he come in now
28:44and does he go in
28:45before Olsen
28:48or does he go in
28:49after Olsen?
28:50That's up to his crew.
28:52He's got some breathing
28:53room between himself
28:54and Olsen.
28:56Olsen had trouble
28:57getting by
28:58some of the slower cars.
29:00You can see
29:01the difference here.
29:03He had trouble
29:04getting by
29:06Tomczyk
29:08in the Audi.
29:10So now the question
29:11is going to be
29:12is Olsen going to
29:13come in
29:14with that much
29:15of a difference
29:16or is he going to
29:17wait and see
29:18what happens?
29:20You can see
29:21how the cars
29:22bounce here.
29:23It looks so easy
29:25but if the set up
29:26isn't right
29:27you're in serious trouble.
29:28I like to call this place
29:29a little Monte Carlo.
29:31It's a very good
29:32reason for it.
29:33This is
29:34Huisman coming
29:35into the pits here.
29:36It's a street course
29:38and the fans
29:39are up close
29:40to the action
29:41and to their drivers.
29:47Been racing here
29:49a number of years
29:53and every year
29:54they draw about
29:55100,000.
29:56The only time
29:57they haven't is in
29:58the weather
29:59was very very bad.
30:00Touring cars
30:01have been in the last
30:02several years
30:03the main event
30:04for this Speed Weekend
30:05but they've had
30:06sports prototypes
30:07motorcycles
30:08you name it
30:09they've had it here
30:11and they love
30:12their racing
30:13in the city of Nuremberg.
30:15Have a battle
30:16here going on
30:17between teammates
30:19the two blue Mercedes
30:21the yellow Mirrors
30:22Huisman
30:23the green Mirrors
30:24Marcel Thiemann
30:26both battling for position.
30:28Thiemann is currently
30:29running third
30:31and when you consider
30:32this is only his second race
30:33in the car
30:34substituting for
30:35Bernd Meilander
30:36who broke his foot
30:37Thiemann has put on
30:38a tremendous performance.
30:42Aiello comes out
30:43after his stop and go
30:44and has dropped
30:45well dropped way back
30:46he's just had
30:48an unfortunate break there.
30:52Olsen is in the pits
30:55his crew wants to
30:56get him out
30:57as quick as they can
30:59Olsen is out
31:01and now the question
31:02is going to be
31:03what's going to happen
31:04to Bernd Schneider
31:07Olsen has dropped
31:08all the way back
31:09to third or fourth
31:10position
31:13and sitting in
31:14second place
31:15right now
31:16is Timo Scheider
31:19Scheider has not pitted
31:20so he's sitting
31:21in second position
31:23Bernd Schneider
31:24is your leader
31:25Uwe Olsen
31:26has dropped
31:27all the way back
31:28to
31:29what appears
31:30to be fourth position
31:34Bernd Schneider
31:35is in
31:36now the question
31:37is going to be
31:38how can Olsen
31:39catch up and get around
31:41Olsen had a big
31:42deficit to make up
31:44a great stop here
31:45for Bernd Schneider
31:46here he comes
31:47let's watch for
31:48Uwe Olsen
31:50look on the right
31:51of your screen
31:52is Olsen going to be
31:53able to come by
31:54or is Schneider
31:55going to hold on
31:56there is
31:57Uwe Olsen
31:58and he's not
31:59going to get by him
32:01Schneider comes out
32:02in front
32:03Olsen is right up
32:04on his back bumper
32:08Schneider leads
32:09Olsen
32:10but he's right
32:11on his back bumper
32:13Schneider
32:14with fresh tires
32:15Olsen's got a couple
32:16on his
32:17through the S
32:18up to the wall
32:23Uwe Olsen
32:25working on
32:26Bernd Schneider
32:28he's going inside
32:29Uwe Olsen
32:30ducks in
32:31and gets around
32:32Bernd Schneider
32:34one of the best places
32:35to pass
32:36and Uwe Olsen
32:37did it
32:38he passed the
32:39Dominator
32:41and now
32:42it's going to be
32:43a run to the finish
32:45Uwe Olsen
32:46has surprised
32:47everyone
32:48in taking the lead
32:49here at the
32:50Norris Ring
32:51on the Speed Weekend
32:52in the German
32:53Touring Car Masters
32:54he leads
32:55Bernd Schneider
33:00something just
33:01a little bit different
33:02for Schneider
33:03here
33:04and Uwe Olsen
33:05who has been
33:06improving steadily
33:07getting used to
33:08driving for Mercedes
33:09this year
33:10is out in front
33:11for the first time
33:13during a regular
33:14pass on the track
33:19actually I have to say
33:20these two cars
33:21are running in second
33:22and third
33:23Schneider is still
33:24out in front
33:25but when Schneider
33:26pits
33:27these two
33:28will take the lead
33:31that scoring chart
33:32isn't quite correct
33:34it's a little behind
33:35but you can see
33:36by the B's
33:37which stands for
33:38in German
33:39Buxenstopp
33:40means pits
33:41and that's what
33:42that's on there
33:43Uwe Olsen
33:44leading
33:45Bernd Schneider
33:53and Schneider
33:54is not letting up
33:55and Olsen
33:56is not going to be
33:57easy to pass
34:02Olsen
34:03one of the few drivers
34:04in Germany
34:05who did not come up
34:06the formula route
34:07he drove
34:08production cars
34:09touring cars
34:10here comes
34:11Timo Scheider
34:12so Scheider
34:13will give up
34:14the lead here
34:15and as soon
34:16as Olsen
34:17comes across
34:18the finish line
34:19he will take it over
34:20here comes
34:21Timo Scheider
34:24this young driver
34:25has done very well
34:26for Opel
34:27he's 22 years old
34:29he's been very
34:30very consistent
34:31and for a while
34:32he was the only driver
34:33that was able to
34:34pick up a point
34:35and he made a mistake
34:36he stalled it here
34:37they're allowed
34:38to give him a push
34:39so Scheider
34:40who had a chance
34:41to show up
34:42in the running
34:43is going to have to
34:44hope that he can
34:45get out quick enough
34:46his crew
34:47gets him out
34:48the young
34:49Timo Scheider
34:52will move out
34:53into the pack
34:54and we'll have to
34:55see where he comes
34:56back into the field
34:57the young drivers
34:58here at the Norris Ring
34:59are at a certain
35:00disadvantage
35:01the course
35:02looks so simple
35:03but the better
35:04the driver
35:05the quicker they are
35:06and by quicker
35:07I'm talking tenths
35:08of a second
35:09and it makes
35:10the young drivers
35:11who have done
35:12so well up and to
35:13now
35:14and have never
35:15driven a touring car
35:16on this particular
35:17circuit are back
35:18in the pack
35:19it's just a very
35:20difficult place
35:21to go fast
35:22consistently
35:23you have to have
35:24the right set up
35:25and right now
35:26Uwe Ahlsen
35:27seems to have it
35:28Ahlsen
35:29is leading
35:30Bernd Scheider
35:31and he has
35:32a little bit
35:33of breathing room
35:34if you can call
35:35that much
35:36of a breathing room
35:40will Scheider
35:41be able to catch up
35:42that
35:43is going to be
35:44the question
35:49right now
35:50Marcel Thiemann
35:51is running in
35:52third position
35:53that's him
35:54right there
35:57and Winkelhock
35:58right here in the
35:59orange Opel
36:00is running in
36:01fourth position
36:02a couple lap
36:03cars are in
36:04between them
36:05so Winkelhock
36:06came out of
36:07the pit stops
36:08in fourth position
36:09and right now
36:11has the
36:12hopes of
36:13Opel
36:14on his shoulders
36:16looking for a
36:17good finish
36:18for the first
36:19time this season
36:26your leaders
36:27just went through
36:28into the corner
36:29there
36:31there is
36:32Uwe Ahlsen
36:33followed by
36:35Bernd Scheider
36:36now
36:37Ahlsen
36:38hasn't done
36:39badly this season
36:40in his first
36:41ride in a Mercedes
36:42he was 5th
36:43and 4th
36:44at Hockenheim
36:45he was 7th
36:46and 19th
36:47at the Nürburgring
36:48he had problems
36:49at the end of the race
36:50at Ostersleben
36:51he was 4th
36:52and 3rd
36:53at the Sachsenring
36:54he was 11th
36:55and had a DNF
36:56and then
36:57here at the
36:58Norrisring
36:59qualified 3rd
37:00finished 2nd
37:01in the qualifying race
37:02and here in the
37:03feature race
37:04he is out in front
37:05has to be
37:06a happy man
37:07now but
37:08concentrating
37:09like all get out
37:11he's got one of the
37:12toughest drivers
37:13behind him
37:14and Bernd Scheider
37:16one of the most
37:17competitive
37:18Scheider is sitting
37:19on a very comfortable
37:20lead
37:21in the points race
37:22he came into
37:23the weekend
37:24with a
37:2525 point
37:26margin
37:27over Marcel Fesler
37:28now Fesler
37:29has dropped out
37:30Timo Scheider
37:31is also out
37:32Scheider
37:33has a problem
37:34is out of the car
37:35and is gone
37:37Schelsen
37:38comes into this
37:39weekend
37:40quite a ways behind
37:41I mean
37:42he doesn't have
37:43much of a chance
37:44he had a
37:4552 point
37:46deficit
37:47between himself
37:48and
37:49Scheider
37:50coming into the
37:51weekend
37:52so Bernd Scheider
37:53even with a
37:542nd place finish
37:55here is going
37:56to do extremely
37:57well
37:58because the cars
37:59that were
38:00close to him
38:01are not very
38:02close to him
38:03here in the race
38:04Aiello
38:05was 4th
38:0640
38:0847 points
38:09back
38:10so he's
38:11sort of in
38:12trouble here too
38:1320 points
38:14for a victory
38:1515 for 2nd
38:16here in the
38:17feature race
38:18qualifying race
38:19only goes out
38:203 points
38:213, 2 and 1
38:22but the big points
38:23are earned here
38:24in the feature race
38:25so Bernd Scheider
38:26is sitting in
38:272nd place
38:28Uwe Alsen
38:29in 1st
38:30Alsen looking
38:31for his
38:32best result
38:33of the season
38:34and right now
38:35unless he runs
38:36into problems
38:37in traffic
38:38he's going to be
38:39tough to get by
38:40he kind of
38:41snuck up
38:42on
38:43Bernd Scheider
38:44when he came
38:45out of the pits
38:46Scheider with
38:47new tires
38:48Alsen had a
38:49couple
38:50laps on his
38:51and was able
38:52to get a little
38:53bit of grip
38:54right before
38:55the Dutzendijs
38:56the lake
38:57slipped inside
38:58got around the
38:59corner and has
39:00led ever since
39:01then
39:02they bounced
39:03back in the
39:04pack
39:05Tom Cech
39:06in fact
39:07the trio
39:08of Audis
39:09led by
39:10Laurent Aiello
39:13they have
39:14done so well
39:15this year
39:16the Audis
39:17of course
39:18they would like
39:19to continue
39:20to do well
39:21and keep up there
39:22but right now
39:23they're
39:24having a little
39:25bit of a problem
39:26here
39:27Aiello is back
39:28in about 12th
39:29or 13th
39:30position
39:31trying to work
39:32his way
39:33through the
39:34pack
39:35and so
39:36he's
39:37hoping to
39:38get some
39:39points here
39:40but
39:41whether he's
39:42going to be
39:43able to
39:44it looks
39:45like he
39:46got another
39:47stop and
39:48go
39:49Uwe Alsen
39:50your leader
39:51as the laps
39:52are counting
39:53down
39:54here in the
39:55fifth race
39:56weekend
39:57of the German
39:58Touring Car
39:59Masters
40:00racing today
40:02in the historic
40:03park
40:04in the city
40:05once a year
40:06more than
40:07100,000 fans
40:08come here over
40:09the weekend
40:10to watch the
40:11racing
40:12and then it's
40:13all torn down
40:14again
40:15here comes
40:16Aiello
40:17this has not
40:18been his day
40:19he battles his way
40:20back
40:21gets up into
40:22points
40:23now has to
40:24take a stop
40:25and go
40:26so much
40:27for
40:28a points
40:29finish
40:30he was headed
40:31down to
40:32about
40:3310th
40:34position
40:35now he's
40:36going to
40:37drop way
40:38back
40:39I think
40:40I had a
40:41problem with
40:42the speed
40:43limiter
40:44after I
40:45left the
40:46pit
40:47the first
40:48time
40:49I think
40:50the speed
40:51limiter
40:52didn't work
40:53I was over

42:30and he comes
42:31from the
42:32Netherlands
42:33he's
42:34also
42:35paying a price
42:36here
42:37the brake
42:38problem
42:39has always
42:40been one
42:41at the
42:42Norris
42:43ring
42:44all the
42:45hard braking
42:46you have
42:47to do
42:48and somewhere
42:49along the
42:50way
42:51you can
42:52overdo it
42:53evidently
42:54that's
42:55what happened
42:56he tried
42:57is he going
42:58to get
42:59on it
43:00he did
43:01well
43:02that was
43:03a very
43:04smooth move
43:05to get
43:06by David
43:07Salins
43:08Salins
43:09stepped
43:10in
43:11when Pedro
43:12Lamy
43:13left
43:14the
43:15Rossberg
43:16team
43:17he's
43:18a 25
43:19year old
43:20Belgian
43:21driver
43:22Uwe
43:23Altson
43:24continues
43:25to be
43:26a comfortable
43:27lead
43:28can
43:29stay
43:30in
43:31second
43:32place
43:33and be
43:34happy with
43:35the points
43:36he's
43:37going to
43:38get
43:39because
43:40no one
43:41is going
43:42to be
43:43close
43:44to him
43:45if he
43:46can hold
43:47on to
43:48it
43:49Marcel
43:50Thiemann
43:51right there
43:52in that
43:53blue
43:54he's
43:55going
43:56to finish
43:57his
43:58officers
43:59labe
44:00and then
44:01at the
44:02Sachsen
44:03ring
44:04Thiemann
44:05was
44:06seventh
44:07and
44:08fourth
44:09he was
44:10third
44:11here in
44:12the
44:13qualifying
44:14race
44:15and is
44:16running
44:17third
44:18here in
44:19the
44:20feature
44:21race
44:22so
44:23Uwe
44:24Altson
44:25continues to
44:26roll and that's
44:27the man that's
44:28trying to catch
44:29him and look
44:30at the
44:31difference here
44:32you can
44:33see it
44:34graphically
44:35as we go
44:36through the
44:37S's out
44:38toward the
44:39concrete wall
44:40with Bernd
44:41Schneider
44:42you can see
44:43it gets very
44:44rough out there
44:45and then you
44:46have to come
44:47in and set
44:48up for the
44:49rest of the
44:50straightaway
44:51toward the
44:52concrete wall
44:53and now
44:54Uwe
44:55Altson has
44:56picked up
44:57a big
44:58chunk of
44:59time
45:00he has
45:01stretched out
45:02his lead
45:03over Bernd
45:04Schneider
45:05here and
45:06Uwe
45:07Altson seems
45:08to be on
45:09his way
45:10to his
45:11first victory
45:12for Mercedes
45:13and puts
45:14him right
45:15back up
45:16on top
45:17of the
45:18drivers
45:19showing what
45:20they can
45:21quite frankly
45:22make themselves
45:23look good
45:24they want to
45:25keep driving
45:26they're gonna
45:27have to do it
45:28and this one
45:29here is really
45:30doing a great
45:31job Jochen
45:32Winkelhock
45:33in Opel
45:34he has the
45:35patience you
45:36have to imagine
45:37but boy
45:38he has to be
45:39very happy now
45:40he's had a
45:41tough year and
45:42a half
45:43the car is
45:44running
45:45he's got it
45:46worked out
45:47the setup
45:48is perfect
45:49and he has
45:51not sure
45:52who's going to
45:53be happier
45:54Uwe Altson
45:55or the
45:56Opel crew
45:57that fourth
45:58place finish
45:59is a big deal
46:00for them
46:01they have not
46:02done well
46:03this season
46:04Uwe Altson
46:05and there
46:06you have
46:07Thiemann
46:08and
46:09Aiello
46:10and there
46:11is
46:12Winkelhock
46:13putting
46:14the laps
46:15in
46:16to get
46:17them down
46:18next stop
46:19on the
46:20tour
46:21is also
46:22going to be
46:23a new
46:24course
46:25actually
46:26it's the
46:27second time
46:28that these
46:29cars will
46:30have raced
46:31there
46:32it's called
46:33the Lausitz
46:34Ring
46:35the European
46:36Speedway
46:37in the
46:38former
46:39Eastern
46:40Germany
46:41it is
46:42a tri-oval
46:43super
46:44speedway
46:45with a
46:46Grand Prix
46:47course
46:48built
46:49it is
46:50expected
46:51in the
46:52next year
46:53or two
46:54that these
46:55touring cars
46:56will run
46:57the tri-oval
46:58super
46:59speedway
47:00and not
47:01the
47:02Grand Prix
47:03course
47:04possibly running
47:05two events
47:06there
47:07one in the
47:08Grand Prix
47:09course
47:10one
47:11on the
47:12tri-oval
47:13that's all
47:14speculation
47:15though
47:16but it's
47:17a fine
47:18race
47:19when they
47:20return
47:21this year
47:22the weather
47:23is better
47:24and they
47:25can do
47:26some
47:27fine
47:28racing
47:29Bernd Schneider
47:30has not
47:31really
47:32made up
47:33much
47:34ground
47:35on
47:36Uwe Altsin
47:37Norbert
47:38Haug
47:39on
47:40the
47:41left
47:42has to
47:43be
47:44pretty
47:45satisfied
47:46the way
47:47now he's
47:48just got to
47:49bring it
47:50home
47:51he's got a
47:52lap car
47:53ahead of him
47:54in Tomchek
47:55but Schneider
47:56is far
47:57enough back
47:58that he
47:59probably
48:00will not
48:01present a
48:02challenge
48:03if he's
48:04going to
48:05present it
48:06it will
48:07come now
48:08but he is
48:09way too far
48:10back in order
48:11to make
48:12any kind
48:13of a
48:14move
48:15so it
48:16is
48:17time to
48:18head for
48:19the
48:20checkered flag
48:21and it's
48:22going to
48:23be one
48:24happy crew
48:25to meet
48:26him
48:27Uwe Altsin
48:28comes across
48:29the winner
48:30on the
48:31speed
48:32weekend
48:33at the
48:34Norris
48:35ring
48:36in the
48:37German
48:38touring
48:39car
48:40masters
48:41his
48:42first victory
48:43in the
48:44series
48:45and
48:46Uwe
48:47Altsin
48:48makes his
48:49donuts for
48:50the fans
48:53this is
48:54one
48:55happy man
48:58naturally I
48:59pushed in the
49:00first race I
49:01had a problem
49:02with the right
49:03rear wheel
49:04there was some
49:05sort of a slow
49:06leak and
49:07I have to say
49:08there was only
49:09a little air
49:10left there was
49:11actually too
49:12little and the
49:13distance to the
49:14pit stop
49:15now I
49:16had to make
49:17that as good
49:18as possible that
49:19means the
49:20entrance and
49:21the exit had
49:22to be right
49:23and then the
49:24team gave
49:25me a great
49:26snap he
49:27came out
49:28just in front
49:29of me but
49:30he had new
49:31tires and I
49:32had two laps
49:33on mine I
49:34knew that he
49:35would have to
49:36be careful
49:37with the
49:38tires and
49:39my chance
49:40would come at
49:41the end of
49:42the long
49:43race
49:44he did
49:45a great job
49:46he definitely
49:47offered sports
49:48the best will
49:49win and today
49:50Uwe Alsen was
49:51the best that
49:52can change of
49:53course in the
49:54next race but
49:55Uwe made a
49:56great move and
49:57if you can
49:58outbreak Bernd
49:59Schneider then
50:00you've really
50:01done something
50:02I believe he
50:03deserved the
50:04win
50:06and so there's
50:07the new
50:08point standings
50:09Bernd Schneider
50:10way out in front
50:11Marcel Fesler
50:12to the next event on the schedule that will be at the Lausitzring, the brand new course
50:17in eastern Germany. It's also called the Europe's Euro Speedway, so you join whatever you'd
50:23like to call it, we're going to be there to bring you all the action as the victors here
50:28at the Norse Ring celebrate. This is Milt Fitzwater, hope you enjoyed the racing in
50:31the German Touring Car Masters, and we'll see you at the Lausitzring.
