00:00:00A full reconstruction after an injury in the Super 10 final, 14 months almost to
00:00:05the day since he's been back in the Australian colours and I'm hoping he has
00:00:08a big one I can tell you not just because he's Australian but because you
00:00:12want to see the best rugby players and he was one of the best before he was
00:00:15injured we just hope he comes back with the same form and entertains
00:00:19everybody that enjoys rugby. Well that's true statement that as well but the
00:00:23combination with Jason Little has always been something to be revered
00:00:27throughout the world both still young enough to make a huge contribution to
00:00:31Australian and international rugby. Australia will have the kickoff as the
00:00:37referee and his touch judges await the signal.
00:00:45It looks like the Canadians have won the toss and have elected to receive the
00:00:49ball. Australia will run with the aid of I guess a slight breeze at their back
00:00:53but it won't make much of a difference and you can expect the Australians to
00:00:57start off very aggressively I can tell you that I spoke to the coach Bob Dwyer
00:01:01and he was disappointed that that aspect of the game against the box it'll be a
00:01:06fiery start let me tell you. Australia will look to continue to dominate the
00:01:11lineouts they were impressive in the lineouts against South Africa and Canada
00:01:16who played Romania last week that was the one area of their game despite their
00:01:20victory that they were very poor so Australia will have a useful platform if
00:01:24they can secure the possession from Warwick Waugh and John Eales in particular
00:01:29but watch out for those three tiger-ish loose forwards lots of experience Tim
00:01:33Gavin, Ili Tambua and Wally Offa Ngawi big strong men working tigerishly in
00:01:40the Ruxin Malls.
00:01:42Truly international event if we look at those two touch judges from two
00:01:53different parts of the world one from France and one from the United States
00:02:00Michael Liner big role for him captain today that's the start it's a short kick
00:02:08that Offa Ngawi is in there knock on coming from Australia first and
00:02:16foremost much better start to Australia they were sadly lacking in the kick-offs
00:02:22against the box they worked on that part of their game and really need to
00:02:25pull straight through there onto the high ball unfortunately didn't come Australia's way
00:02:28but at least they contested it. Well Australia have a stronger heavier pack
00:02:33of forwards than Canada so pressure will come in the tight scrums as well that's
00:02:37all facets of the game that we've covered. Well taken at the back by Matt
00:02:42Burke. Australia will want to release if they don't get it they will have the
00:02:47advantage of the scrum put in this is Liner's kick across field David
00:02:51Lougheed back with Scott Stewart. A fair bit of kicking from both sides just to
00:02:58settle themselves down but this is Campisi looking to find space he finds it
00:03:07Australians getting there quickly in numbers and very important that too but
00:03:11one of the great Australian hallmarks is denying the opposition the ball and
00:03:15playing against a more mediocre team one feels that Australia will want to
00:03:20control all facets of the game and keep the ball in hand.
00:03:25It's a nice start by David Campisi. A mistake with the game that he could have been
00:03:30disappointed about his last start but the ball in hand there a well judged little
00:03:33chip over. Looks like Campo's on today. Well he almost gets bored if he doesn't get the ball and
00:03:40looks for work and drive through there by the Australians that's good quality
00:03:45position for them Liner. Lovely switch to Jason Little that's the only way to
00:03:50tackle him that's around the ankles.
00:03:53Tambour. Solid players Warwick. War carries on that move.
00:03:59Slaffery gets sucked into that ruck. There's Campo. Chip coming from Liner.
00:04:07Now Yossi tries for Timmy Horan but David Lougheed's got the pace to get
00:04:10back. It's good pressure in the opening minutes from Australia. Yes, nice pressure from Australia and
00:04:15that little play will do. Tim Horan's confidence the world of foot he's made a
00:04:18tackle he's back in this game. Good phased ball by Yossi Zou. They kept it in
00:04:22hand and that's what they've got to do if they if they want to win this game
00:04:25they've got to take it by the neck. Control possession and just work away get
00:04:29the ball rolling. Once that's on its way they're hard to stop. The juggernauts in
00:04:32play. Timmy Horan one of the great stars of Australia's triumph in the 91 Rugby
00:04:38World Cup.
00:04:43Oh very shrill blast there from referee Patrick Robin. Interesting decision now
00:04:52for Australia too. They've taken the scrum instead of the penalty. I think they think they can get a few more than the three.
00:05:02They're heavier in the pack I believe in Australia so let's just see how they go. It's a big
00:05:06test for them. The tied five wasn't that good against the box. Daly and Harthill up
00:05:12front in the props as replacements in this particular match. Gavin holds at the
00:05:16back. Impetus coming from Australia but that scrum reeled slightly and good
00:05:21work there from John Hutchinson for Canada. Certainly Hanabi's work cut out
00:05:27today is Hutchinson but lots of foraging he needs to do on a lucky bounce for
00:05:32Canada. Well played the Canadians. There's no doubt about that. They absorbed the
00:05:36pressure there. They kept their cool. If they can do that they're certainly
00:05:39becoming of age as a rugby nation. Withstanding that initial pressure was
00:05:45obviously one of the things that they knew they would have to be confronted
00:05:48with. They've done it well. Yes there's Tim Gavin here controlling the ball. It slipped out there.
00:05:54Well played by the Canadians there. They've taken control of Australia.
00:05:58I thought that they would have had it. Warwick Waugh in the front. Impetus from those catches and
00:06:06then the rolling balls is vital.
00:06:10Well Canada certainly trying all sorts of options even if it means transgressing
00:06:16the laws of the game to stem this Australian tide.
00:06:21The penalty is certainly favouring Australia. A little bit undisciplined the Canadians but
00:06:25that could certainly swing around. Michael Liner he had a couple of kicks
00:06:29here yesterday. They had a walk on the field. He was striking them very cleanly.
00:06:34He'd like to get this one over. Get another confidence booster. They hit the
00:06:38front. I think we'll see Australia kick the ball in hand and look for the tries.
00:06:43I'm sure they prefer to win by tries. There's no doubt about that. Here we go.
00:06:48He's rolling it around here. Sliding it around. It's came in on the side of the
00:06:52ruck. It must come in from behind the ball. Number seven there came in on the
00:06:55side of the ruck and the referee Rob Arndt no hesitation with the penalty.
00:07:00Gordon McKinnon was the man there transgressing. Well it's early in the
00:07:06game just four minutes gone and Michael Liner's this is his attempt lovely
00:07:10camera angle. He struck that well as Michael Liner. Has he got the legs? Yes he
00:07:14has.
00:07:21Well we're talking about confidence boosters and that'll do. Despite all that
00:07:26experience there's obviously still some butterflies in Michael Liner's stomach
00:07:30and getting that over early and from an acute angle was a sound effort from him.
00:07:35Maurice with a restart but that's going to go too far.
00:07:40It's not a mistake he's given Australia a decided advantage here. The food on the
00:07:48halfway. The ball goes out on a full with the option of another kick or scrub on
00:07:53halfway with the food to go to the right team receiving. Australia decided to keep the ball in hand.
00:07:59Slattery he's always a very busy player Matt Burke one of the great sevens rugby
00:08:04players from Australia now in the 15 man game here today.
00:08:11Wait up, wait up, wait up please.
00:08:15This Australian batsman the Wallaby is carried around by the youngest player in the team for the entire tour and that happens to be Joe Roth.
00:08:22It's also his first game today is Joe Roth as Liner hoists Scott Stewart will come in. He's very brave on the catches and that was wonderfully taken by him. He's got a lovely feeling out there.
00:08:33We saw against Romania he took some very very solid and difficult up and unders.
00:08:40Reece Openside great running off the ball by Liner and the switch again that's good play by Roth.
00:08:49Taken on by Tambua.
00:08:56Well full credit to Michael Liner there he just read that situation so well didn't he.
00:09:00The cool head on the skipper's shoulders. Well quick take from him and Campisi is inside there Roth can't take for the second time.
00:09:10Huge pressure from the Australian packs Slattery has it. Tambua he's big and strong Tambua he scored.
00:09:30In a career so dogged with injuries Ili Tambua back in the Australian side and really a big powerful man.
00:09:38Yes Ili Tambua making his Rugby World Cup debut.
00:09:42It's about third or fourth base ball Slattery picks it up.
00:09:45He's just too big, too strong and he's too close to the line almost unstoppable. That'll do his confidence the world of good as well.
00:09:53Positioned himself well got himself down always a difficult target if you're down in a hunched position and probably four Canadians going over with him.
00:10:05Nicknamed Ili Tambua the human skewer that's what they call him back in Australia.
00:10:11Had a huge series last year with the best internationals in Australia and that try will certainly give him a chance should Australia go through to the quarters of grabbing one of those back row spots.
00:10:26Michael Liner one of the few men that when he goes back steps to the right most due to the left with their goal kicking and that's solidly through the middle.
00:10:4231 minutes to go Australia already in the lead by those 10 points and right from the start borne out by the words of Russell Fairfax.
00:10:52Lots of confidence and Australia really going at the Canadians that early penalty that they got looking to take rather take the option of the scrum.
00:11:02One senses that the Canadians will know they've been in a match today. That's a better restart from him up for a dizzy hills.
00:11:15The Canadians offside and is that the sort of pattern that we might see as they try and stem this Australian tide.
00:11:24There's no doubt that they've got to do that and do it soon. Australia off to a wonderful start. David Camp puts the long touch finder in.
00:11:35Good for Michael Liner keeping Campo involved in the game too. Of course David has played at fullback for Australia too. He's a good punter of the ball.
00:11:44Yes Campo probably has the most ridiculous kick in the Australian team.
00:11:51Also with lots of accuracy David lends a hand there. Slappy wants better possession than that.
00:12:02Lots of communication in the scrum. Importantly this is lovely running off the ball. Now Little has got Ruff and he's outside. Will this be a chance a try? A first try for Australia for Joe Ruff.
00:12:14Yes the happy man the 19 year old from the ACT. Nice cut out pass here and then the long ball from Rorn. Hiddles straight through the gap at pace.
00:12:34Ruff positioning himself worked perfectly. It's a matter of pace beating him every time. He brings it round makes it a little bit easier for Michael Liner and good stuff for the youngster from Canberra.
00:12:46Well it came from a well timed pass from Liner and then to Timmy Horan right in front of the man and Australia have always handled the ball so competently and so well giving space on the outside.
00:13:05Michael Liner just holding up with that kick at the moment. There's a little bit of a tension that looks like Jason Little. Yes he got the real solid knock when he delivered that pass. Certainly legitimate tackle but really solid.
00:13:19Jason Little's a big man and coming down he's down to earth. Comes down hard with that sort of tackle. But really good play by him and good release. Initially Australia were going backwards at that maul and then got the control that they needed to allow Slattery the early release.
00:13:39Almost a perfect start for the Australians. Very, very few mistakes. Unlike their first game where the pressure from the spring box caused uncharacteristic play by the Aussies. But this is the Australian side that I guess we've become used to and I guess people want to see play. Let's hope we see a few more tries like that. I'm sure we will.
00:14:04Liner he's got his sights set well today has Michael Liner.
00:14:20Well young Joe Robb then with that first try for Australia we saw the pleasure on the face of the man. The creation came from some slick passing from his inner backs.
00:14:34Well taken in by Australia. Just watch how well they get momentum going after the catch with the maul. That's very good play by them. John Eales in the middle.
00:14:44Keeping sight of that ball for the Canadians is becoming a real effort.
00:14:47Well that was number 8 Al Charron there on the Australian side of that ruck. But the penalty has gone to Australia and one fancies possibly for illegal rucking.
00:15:06Yes here it is here. Both of them fighting for the ball. Yes there's a boot there. I think it was an accident. There was no malice in that one at all. But the referee certainly right awarded the penalty. Canada's first chance for points.
00:15:22252 points for Gareth Rees.
00:15:27Like Michael Liner has played in every Rugby World Cup match for his country since inception in 1987.
00:15:36Just the three steps from Rees. Has he got the distance? Yes that's a good kick from Gareth Rees.
00:15:43Important for Canada to try and get some points on the board while they can because Australia seem to have found the form that they've been searching for.
00:16:07Taken by John Graff.
00:16:11Called for the mark.
00:16:14Canada looking to run it. Well that's brave of them. Al Charron was that fast forward. Referee says no.
00:16:20Taken in by Gordon McKinnon.
00:16:23Graff again as he did against Romania trying to take on the pack of forwards.
00:16:27Canada certainly showing some momentum in that ball. Now they'll want some sort of release to Rees.
00:16:42That's Rees with it now. On the inside coming in Steve Gray but they're not getting across that advantage line and there's all sorts of pressure.
00:16:53Christian Stewart does well to get through the half gap and Rees is tackled around the neck.
00:17:02Well kick taken there by Eddie Evans for Canada and indiscipline from Australia.
00:17:09Yes caught unawares by the quick tap by the Canadian team. Good tactics keeping the ball in hand.
00:17:16Good play by the Canadian team. Just working down this right hand touch side. Keeping the ball together.
00:17:24Rees gets a high shot on him from full back Matt Burke. Burke will be disappointed about that. He's normally a fairly good tackler.
00:17:35Normally goes low but trying to wrap the ball up. The ball on all of it. On a touch high. The referee again spot on the money.
00:17:44Well stamping his authority on the game. One senses that that was not really a dangerous tackle but the laws are laws.
00:17:52And Rees would want to continue with his success. Seven points to three Australia lead.
00:18:00More importantly for them besides the points is they have tries on the board and they have their confidence back.
00:18:07Rees struck this one well too. That's off the upright. Back foot is John Eales.
00:18:13And then good play by David Campisi. He was under enormous pressure there.
00:18:18Scott Stewart with a link up. Not enough Australian, Canadian forwards in support.
00:18:25But that comes back to them.
00:18:28The tap kept coming across and that's Al Charon number eight.
00:18:33Then Joe Roth makes something of this. There was an early knock on.
00:18:49Rod Snow, Eddie Evans up front against Mark Hartill and Tony Daly.
00:18:54Canada would want at least their own ball in the tight phases of the game as best as they can get.
00:19:00Christian Stewart can't take.
00:19:04Canada certainly looking on occasions to try and run against Australia and that's interesting and it's brave Scott Stewart on the inside.
00:19:15Good support play coming from Christian Stewart.
00:19:23There's a chance for Canada. Well that's as interesting as they come flying through.
00:19:27That's a thumping tackle from Phil Kearns.
00:19:32Yes he's been short so well through David Campisi in.
00:19:36And was there a bit of an opportunity there?
00:19:39Yes Campisi goes for the intercept there. Ball back inside.
00:19:44Big hit there by Phil Kearns. Took him over the touchline.
00:19:47Defense was not found wanting when it was really needed.
00:19:51That's Campisi's punt but it's not going to go far enough.
00:19:54Angle was acute.
00:20:02A little chat to Matt Burke there from David Campisi.
00:20:05Saying you're in a better position. Get closer to me as John Eales drives through.
00:20:17Rod Snow with a look of amazement on his face coming from an offside position.
00:20:27Camposi's punt that will not go out.
00:20:31Back forward to Gordon McKinnon.
00:20:34He took that inside his half or outside his goal line and good recovery work there by the flank forward.
00:20:47S.H.I. 25.
00:20:51K.H.L. 28.
00:20:5525 was the call then it became 28.
00:20:58Will that be Warwick Waugh?
00:21:01Mark Eales that's a great, John Eales that's a great jump by Australia.
00:21:07Line of action from the Australian pack.
00:21:12Tambua right in the middle of that offering.
00:21:14Gowie.
00:21:18Some awesome work from the forwards and now the chance for the backs.
00:21:21Good flick down the line.
00:21:24Rough back to Jason Little. He's strong on his feet is Jason Little.
00:21:30Slattery, was that the right option?
00:21:33Harris there by Scott Stewart from the back.
00:21:35Well Phil Kearns is blown up there for throwing a punch at one of the Canadians.
00:21:44Now you've got to be cautioned by referee Roban.
00:21:50Bit of slattery off the bottom of that ruck.
00:22:06Well Phil Kearns was the culprit on that occasion and Peter Slattery who'd got
00:22:14scragged by one of the Canadians possibly that was a byproduct of that.
00:22:19Always a very committed man is Phil Kearns.
00:22:25Carl Saboboda his first match in South African soil.
00:22:31Great ball once again for Australia as Warwick Waugh goes in.
00:22:36Important for Australia as they're operating under the proverbial blanket as eight forwards
00:22:40together and then one man standing off this time Tambua once again.
00:22:50Russell I don't think it's that easy to go through a match having to defend as much
00:22:54as the Canadians are doing at the moment.
00:22:57You're spot on there Gavin. Australia's had most of the ball.
00:22:59They've enjoyed the territory and I'm disappointed about that little bit of play.
00:23:03Third phase they'll have to just continue to roll on, continue to draw the Canadians'
00:23:07backs in, make room for their own backs.
00:23:09A knock on, a simple knock on like that might help their case.
00:23:14Some respite for Canada.
00:23:18Gareth Rees.
00:23:21That foot is Matt Burt. Well positioned was Matt Burt.
00:23:25Scott Stewart. He loves running to Scott Stewart.
00:23:28Just looks around, doesn't find too much support there for him.
00:23:34Well done.
00:23:40Australia playing with a slight wind at their back.
00:23:45But they've handled these first 20 minutes of the first half extremely well with those
00:23:49two tries.
00:23:51Good solid performance which we were expecting from Australia.
00:23:56Tambua at the back.
00:23:58Lineout expertise stretching further than Warwick Waugh and Johnny Eales.
00:24:01Timmy Horan comes back.
00:24:04Great to have him back on the rugby field.
00:24:07Slattery.
00:24:09Campisi worked his way across.
00:24:11Keeps that ball available. Good play by Campisi.
00:24:17Liner's little switch. Joe Roff. He's had plenty of work to do in these first 20 minutes.
00:24:23Slattery.
00:24:27An awesome tight and a charge of the light brigade from the Australian pack of forwards.
00:24:33Keep up please. Keep up with the ball.
00:24:37There's big Warwick Waugh.
00:24:39The round with second rower.
00:24:40Over the ball. They're diving over the ball.
00:24:42Killing possession.
00:24:44Referee Patrick Robbin had no option but to penalise.
00:24:47They'll be disappointing again this drain.
00:24:49Some fundamental mistakes starting to creep into their game.
00:24:53Most of the Canadian pack standing with their hands on their knees.
00:24:56There's plenty of pressure on them.
00:25:04Yes, here we go. Here they come.
00:25:05Over the top here. There goes Warwick Waugh.
00:25:08Yes, right over the ball. They're killing the ball.
00:25:11Canadiens very slow to get back around now on support.
00:25:14They're hanging on.
00:25:15How long can they hang on for?
00:25:18That is the question. That's a big jump in the front by Mike James.
00:25:21Mike James.
00:25:32Well, the game continues despite the injury from that jump in the line-out.
00:25:36Back for Slattery.
00:25:38Matt Burke does well.
00:25:39Gets some pace as he works his way back towards the forwards.
00:25:43That's the platform that Australia want.
00:25:46Big tackle there on Michael Liner.
00:25:49Now this is a race with David Lougheed who's really, really quick.
00:25:53Great recovery from Jason Little.
00:25:56Campisi.
00:25:57Australians have regrouped so well.
00:25:59All getting back in numbers to lend support.
00:26:02And what a wonderful punt there from Joe Robb.
00:26:16There's Jason Little.
00:26:1724 years of age.
00:26:1935 tests for Australia.
00:26:21It's his second World Cup.
00:26:22Seventh game in the World Cup.
00:26:25Whilst he scored four tries.
00:26:26That was a bit of class defence.
00:26:27Back on the ball.
00:26:28Up and away he went.
00:26:29That's fantastic stuff.
00:26:31Hasn't played too many bad tests for Australia has Jason Little.
00:26:35Most of them of course with young Timmy Horan.
00:26:37But that's Peter Slattery here.
00:26:38He's a fantastic player.
00:26:39He's a fantastic player.
00:26:40He's a fantastic player.
00:26:41He's a fantastic player.
00:26:42He's a fantastic player.
00:26:43Young Timmy Horan.
00:26:44But that's Peter Slattery down at the moment.
00:26:57One of the Canadians also being attended to.
00:26:59Well, Peter Slattery.
00:27:03Important for Australia's cause that he stays on the field too.
00:27:07And he's a Nagatty young man.
00:27:08young man. It's his first test since playing the Irish back in 1994. George
00:27:17Gregan, he made that fabulous tackle against the the All Blacks is taking his
00:27:21role. This is Slats' chance. Canada lifting in the line out and that will be a
00:27:28free kick to Australia. Will they bring their forwards into play again? Maybe
00:27:36this will be a huge up-and-under from Michael Liner. Bring the forwards into
00:27:42play again. Jason Little gets up there quickly. Remember he's a tall man, does
00:27:46extremely well with a tap down. Now this is Campisi, just seems to waltz past a
00:27:51few players. Great chance for Australia but Peter Slattery just hinted around
00:27:57the side of that scrum. Referee lets them go. Well taken by Horan. Back inside to
00:28:03Kearns. Thumping tackle from Scott Stewart on Jason Little and there's
00:28:09perhaps not enough rhythm as the players went through.
00:28:16The ball goes to Jason Little. Super tackle there. Hits him very hard.
00:28:20Australia perhaps a little bit too expansive at this stage. They need to
00:28:23tighten it up and maintain the control. They certainly have that all over the
00:28:27Canadians and they're falling into a bit of a trap here. John Eales at the back of
00:28:31the line out. Lots of harassing coming from the Canadians. That's Rod Snow.
00:28:40Interesting that Canada have chosen in this first half an hour of the match, on
00:28:45the few occasions that they've had the ball, to move it down the back line or
00:28:49whoever was on the outside. But look at the Ruxin Malls belonging to Australia
00:28:53and the line outs well with no reply. So outstanding platform in the tight and
00:28:58the Ruxin Malls for the Wallabies. Possession like that though hardly
00:29:02reflects the scorecard. You think Australia with all that ball may have
00:29:05been a little bit further ahead. I would suggest to you that the Canadian side for
00:29:08the last perhaps 10 minutes of the game certainly held their own. They've been
00:29:11under pressure but they've been able to keep Australia trialess and that will do
00:29:16wonders for their confidence. They need now to try and play some football in
00:29:20Australia's half. I'm sure if they get down there it'll be Australia's
00:29:24turn to feel the heat. Well Canada have spread themselves in terms of defence as
00:29:29well and very often it's difficult to play against a team spread across the
00:29:32field. Australia will want to suck those forwards in and and look to launch with
00:29:37those explosive backs. Warwick Waugh there, a shoulder injury for Warwick Waugh.
00:29:43Looks like he hurt his neck when he came in to make that tackle. Went down very
00:29:48quickly but Greg Craig the Australian physio there works wonders with the
00:29:51players. He has him back up and I guess the Australians approach will be if I'm
00:29:55not off on a stretcher I'm on this game for the full 80 minutes.
00:29:59Well so much to play for for all that all those Australian players to get
00:30:04through to the Rugby World Cup final. That's the object of all the players and
00:30:08opportunities exist for every man on the park. John Groff with a feed. That's
00:30:15Charon at the back. He runs straight into offering Gowie and there's only one man
00:30:21that's going to come off best then. Tim Gavin lending some support.
00:30:30Christian Stewart can't control. That was good recovery work from him now. This is
00:30:36a good run by the Canadians. There is an opportunity for them. Can they make
00:30:40something of this? Scott Stewart. Australia regrouping in numbers at the
00:30:45back. David Lougheed. Good play by John Groff. The finishing touches are what's
00:30:52needed now.
00:30:57Well that penalty has been given for Australia being in an offside position.
00:31:04Jason a little missed the tackle but got back to recover. Yeah great play.
00:31:11A nice long ball here. A bit of a spill. Puts Jason a little out of the line.
00:31:14Recovers very well. Super ball there. Inside. There goes Rhys. He offloads.
00:31:21Campeche coming across in cover. Be plenty of chat there by the Australians
00:31:25right now. Yes wrapped up. Very slow to get there. The Canadians in there with
00:31:29numbers. Phil Kearns obviously almost offside then as well. The referee had no
00:31:35option but once the play was stopped he'd give the Canadians a
00:31:40free kick. And the way he's kicking I can tell you. I think he could throw this
00:31:44one over.
00:31:50Well heartening then for the Canadians to have got through there. That move
00:31:54started by Christian Stewart but interesting that the Australians just
00:31:59got back really in numbers there and regrouped very well on defense.
00:32:06Seemingly Canada will take the few opportunities that exist for them and
00:32:10run with the ball. Run at the opposition. 17 points to three. Australia lead one
00:32:16half an hour gone.
00:32:25Rhys just a little tap through. He turns that safely through.
00:32:35Well in the background we hear the train whistle. There's a train on the open
00:32:41stand and every time there's a point scored somebody pulls that whistle.
00:32:50Leiner always pinpoint with those kick-ins. Well taken by Canada.
00:32:57Patrick Rabanne indicating that there was a knock-on from Canada when it was
00:33:06not visible to us. Solid scrum. Gavin can pull himself away then Offeren Gowie
00:33:16comes through. Slattery is passed to Gavin. Australian Tenton looking to drive
00:33:24through three or four times. Suck the opposition in and then run it
00:33:28down the back line. Joe Rock comes through but can't hold. Good support play
00:33:36there from scrum-off John Graff for Canada. And Australia just making the odd
00:33:43mistake. They've got their move set up and some tigerish defense from from
00:33:48Canada. Australia becoming a little bit too fancy. They get back to the basics
00:33:57maintain possession. I think that'll help their cause better than trying to score
00:34:01off every time that they have the ball. John Eales is so often being seen with a
00:34:06big jump in the middle of the line out for Australia. The Canadians pulling down
00:34:15or trying to collapse that maul and that's perhaps one of the few options
00:34:19they have because Australia have really done so well from the line outs and also
00:34:24in those driving mauls.
00:34:31Well interesting that Campisi has had four four kicks down that touchline on
00:34:39the right-hand side and kicked with great accuracy Russell. The ball's coming
00:34:43off he's been exceptionally well. There is they're holding at the back there.
00:34:47Tabua holding the back there as he turns to bring it around. They pull down.
00:34:51The Canadians are pulling him down. He can't do that. That's against the rules of
00:34:54rugby. Eales once again with a catch. Enormous amount of communication amongst
00:35:02the Australian forwards. Switch around that was slight of hand. Matt Burke taken
00:35:10in there by Gordon McKinnon. Carl Svoboda the hooker of Canada came in
00:35:17from the side of that maul remembering that you need to come in from behind the
00:35:21feet of the last man. Russell you spoke about Michael Lino having practiced
00:35:31yesterday and got his kicking right and certainly he's striking the ball well
00:35:37today. His rhythm looks good. Yes he had some minor problems. I guess his kicking
00:35:42style is much like a golf swing with the the rhythm and the pendulum of a golf
00:35:46swing. That's how that's how Michael tends to kick. Strikes the ball a little
00:35:50bit crossways but he's been right behind this ball and they are flying off his
00:35:54boot as true as I guess he could hope especially in today's game. I don't think
00:35:58he's missed a kick. Two conversions and a penalty goal. The chance now to grab a
00:36:02second penalty goal from about I guess about 32 to 35 meters out almost
00:36:07directly in front. Well his kicking form was not that great against Argentina and
00:36:12he'll be pleased that he's getting it back again. Yes quite quite easy to see
00:36:18there. The maul was formed and coming from the side next to the referee had a
00:36:22perfect shot. Perfect vision of what happened and no hesitation.
00:36:29The characteristic four steps back one to the right.
00:36:37Follows that same procedure regardless of the simplicity of the kick from
00:36:41Michael Leiner. That's looks like it's safely through.
00:36:51Ten points in the match then for Michael Leiner to go with those tries from Ili
00:36:56Tambua and Joe Roth. Just five minutes short of halftime and Australia I would
00:37:07guess would be delighted with the scoreline. They still need to work on
00:37:09aspects of their play that they wouldn't be happy with but scoreline wise Bob
00:37:13Dwyer will have a smile on his face. 20 points to six Australia lead. Canada
00:37:21certainly not getting a lot of ball in this match but showing lots of courage
00:37:26and conviction for their country. Big Warwick Waugh he's on his feet again
00:37:33after that injury. Solid front row there of Daly, Kearns and Hartill. That's
00:37:40Charron's pick up. Switch inside to McKinnon. Now what does Gareth Rees do?
00:37:48Well they certainly looking to run us on every available opportunity are Canada.
00:37:56Graff. The pass on the outside. Now can Canada move this swiftly enough? It was good
00:38:03defensive work that by Joe Roth. He stood wide and then Matt Burke with the saving.
00:38:13Canada really needed a man running in straight on Joe Roth to create the space
00:38:18on the outside. This is Gareth Rees with plenty of time. Looks left and he looks
00:38:25right. Chooses Campisi the best punter in the team. It's not a great kick from
00:38:31Campisi. Now Scott Stewart will he look to open up? Tight against the touchline.
00:38:39Taken by Mark Hartill. Australia really get there quickly to lend support to the
00:38:47front ranker Tambua. A suicidal pass to him.
00:38:56Yes. Right on the game line there. Wasn't much chance for Ili at that stage.
00:39:02It was just make sure he wrapped up possession. Don't worry about your own
00:39:05personal safety because it was certainly on the line there. I'm glad it was him
00:39:09and not me I can tell you Gavin. Advance for the cause of Australia. Well Tambua's
00:39:16cause of course is to regain a test spot as well which will be a rather
00:39:21difficult job for him but men create opportunities on the field. Run around
00:39:29there from John Hutchinson. The real Tigers are the Canadian side. Yes they're
00:39:37very physical side aren't they? They do like to play the physical game and as a
00:39:41few sore Aussies out there I expect there would be some big hits. Well David
00:39:45Lougheed has stayed on his feet going down the left-hand touchline and perhaps
00:39:49Australia did not expect a Canadian onslaught in terms of ball being moved
00:39:54from hand to hand after their match against Romania last week where there
00:39:59was a lot of kicking. Today they have chosen to move the ball around and in an
00:40:03entertaining fashion. Yes they're adventurous. Adventurous play. There's no
00:40:08doubt about that. They are not overawed by the Australians. They're doing their
00:40:11own thing and doing it very well. A little bit of pressure coming from them
00:40:17and then back it goes to Campisi with the left foot.
00:40:26Limited opportunities today for Campisi. Most of the balls have moved down to Joe
00:40:31Roth's left wing position. 90 tests for David Campisi. The most senior player on
00:40:38the side at 32 years of age. His third World Cup. That was a thumping tackle
00:40:43from Ofir Ngaoui. Canada keep coming though. They are physical and they
00:40:50prepare to take Australia on. Scott Stewart, Christian Stewart, back to Scott
00:40:56Stewart again.
00:41:06Well perhaps just in the moment critique. Canada have been found wanting. There was
00:41:10a knock on coming from John Graff on that occasion. They're looking good though
00:41:15the Canadians. Certainly looking good. They're starting to put some phased ball
00:41:18together now and they're pulling it to the Aussies. It's up to the Australians now
00:41:22to withstand the pressure. Michael Lyon are also not finding touch. One of the
00:41:30basics that Australia would want to do a little bit better. Scott Stewart.
00:41:35Canadians not getting back in numbers to assist the counter-attacker. There's a
00:41:42chance for Campisi and Timmy Horan. They just need to play so well don't they?
00:41:47And then Horan's chip kicked through. Such a busy player Timmy Horan. Yes he
00:41:52certainly is. Built to be a footballer. Nuggety, very solid, very quick, good lateral
00:41:57movement either way and what a brain. The man has vision. I'd like to see him get
00:42:00more involved here in the Australian side. They need a player of his vision to
00:42:05move the ball outside wide. They've got to get the ball to Campisi and as we saw
00:42:09from Joe Roth today, give him the ball he can score a try. Well I'm sure Campisi
00:42:13himself has asked for the ball. If he doesn't get it he's going to go and find
00:42:16it. Hutchinson and the pick up there from Gareth Rowlands. This is Rod Snow.
00:42:25Slow to regroup the Australians. It's all Canada right now. Rod Snow again the
00:42:35first try scorer for Canada in Rugby World Cup and Australia were off sides.
00:42:49Also another brave attempt. Eddie Evans with a take there. Canada there's no
00:42:54point in kicking it out if they're not going to win line out ball so they'll
00:42:57keep it in hand. Tim Gavin working tirelessly in the rucks. Super player. I
00:43:09coach back in Australia Eastern Suburbs Rugby and he is one of my boys. Well
00:43:14Campisi has got himself into the game just as we were talking and offering
00:43:17Gowie through. This is good ball for Australia if they can get it early. The
00:43:29Canadians stopping that ball coming out so penalty going Australia's way and
00:43:34will Michael Owen a kick for goal or Australia look for a forward onslaught.
00:43:39Super bit of play by David Campisi to set that up. There's a number of tackles
00:43:44down that right-hand flank. Unfortunately big Willie O. He's had a
00:43:50knee problem this year as you can see. Well bandaged there. He's certainly feeling the
00:43:54pinch. The ball's there to come out. There's that hand. You can see the red
00:43:58hand on the ball. Unfortunately killing the pill and as I said the referee spot
00:44:04on with his call so far today. Big tackle off hand Gowie there. He's a tough
00:44:11man to tackle. All 18 stone of him. I guess that makes it hard in anyone's
00:44:17language especially when he could run like a steam train that he does. Well
00:44:20that was like a lion jumping on the back of a buffalo and hauling him in. Well
00:44:26Willie O. is going to leave the field albeit maybe temporarily. There was the
00:44:31drive-through maybe just came down a little heavily on that left knee of his.
00:44:35Heavy knock on the head too. Came down on the head. That's the Australian coach
00:44:42Bob Dwyer with that magnificent record. 65 games he's been in charge of
00:44:48Australia and 42 have been won.
00:44:58Liner's kicking form has been quite splendid. Converted both tries and the
00:45:03two penalty goals.
00:45:14Test career record of course puts him in the number one spot in the world.
00:45:21Great servant for Australia having played some of his rugby in the centre
00:45:26position as well during the time of Mark Eller. Second only to Grant Fox in Rugby
00:45:32World Cup point-scoring history. He's up until this game it was 161 points, two
00:45:38penalty goals and two conversions. We'll see that go up today. Can he add to it?
00:45:43As he got the legs Michael Liner just shaves the right hand upright. Well that's
00:45:53the halftime whistle then with Australia leading Canada by 20 points to six.
00:46:32Well he's either nervous or he's darn annoyed is Bob Dwyer but Canada in
00:46:44picture that's Gareth Rees just having a little chat to the referee Patrick
00:46:48Robin from France and Canada will be pleased with that performance in the
00:46:53first half. Remembering too that they were quarter-finalists in Rugby World
00:46:57Cup 91 losing against New Zealand by 29 points to 13. So relative newcomers to
00:47:04the the world stage they've certainly done extremely well in the World Cups
00:47:09that they've been involved in and this continues in this particular match
00:47:14against Australia. Warwick Warwick with a catch.
00:47:21Australia starting the second half well once again with those catches in the
00:47:25line-out all from general play they've got the Malls going towards the
00:47:30opposition line. Oh for the second time in the match Canada are penalised for
00:47:40collapsing the Mall. Yes John Hutchison took the ball down and Australia
00:47:45had marched the ball about to the rolling malls about 20 meters. Quite a
00:47:50good effort by the Australians. Ili Tabua there to seek some medical
00:47:55attention. He's left knee here it is now they're rolling it forward number six
00:48:02gets himself in an offside position fighting through the rough there it is
00:48:06he's got his hands in the ball drags it down kills the play. Campisi looking to
00:48:12run from his 22 he came away from that remarkably well did Campisi. The move
00:48:19came from a poor kick from Australia and another poor one from Canada that
00:48:23was a forward pass to Tim Gavin.
00:48:29From Tim to Tim, Tim Gavin to Tim Horne the ball went oh so small but it went
00:48:35forward. Patrick Raboon done well in this match. Really short blast on the
00:48:41whistle when there's been a transgression of the laws. Looks as though he has the
00:48:46respect of the players out there. No one's questioning any decisions.
00:48:57Well the scrum was collapsed there by Rod Snow so penalty will go Australia's
00:49:02way and David Campisi.
00:49:07We want a more accurate kick this time. Last one not finding itself in touch
00:49:13this one neither that's taken by Gordon McKinnon. Confidently runs out of his 22
00:49:19punch to Matt Burke. Big hoist from Burke. I haven't seen one of those hoists from
00:49:26Australia for a little while. Helps to bring the forwards back into play but
00:49:32it's Canada that come away with it. Rees as Russell Fairfax suggested looking to
00:49:39kick in the second half. This is Campisi. Good confident kick with the left foot.
00:49:47We see a lot of kicking from the Canadiens. Rees in particular has a fine boot, fine long
00:49:51boot. We'll be looking to keep Australia pinned down in their own territory. I'm surprised that Australia
00:49:59doesn't regroup quicker and decide to run the ball. They've had ample opportunity to go
00:50:03open side. Well not enough players back there to help Campisi in his cause.
00:50:09Well taken at the back by John Hutchinson. He's a tall man. Canada looking to take
00:50:16Australia on right up front. That was good ball which could have possibly moved
00:50:21wider. Can John Graff get that out? Rees switch on the inside to Christian
00:50:31Stewart. Canada just a little bit of over elaboration. That was not a knock on
00:50:38according to the referee. Well he's changed that sorry. He had indicated that
00:50:46it did in fact go forward. So Peter Slattery will have the put in.
00:50:55Now what does Michael Liner do if he gets this ball? Is it an open side kick? No
00:51:00it's a run. This is Horan. Straightens the line normally so well does Horan.
00:51:04That's Slattery in a bit of trouble. He recovers well. Phil Kearns.
00:51:16Well that's some of the dangers one fancies for Australia is having
00:51:21Canadians standing off the rucks and balls and Australia not able to get
00:51:26enough penetration with the men standing off. Yeah good point Gav. I think
00:51:30Australia needs to be tighter. They need to keep it very very tight. The looser
00:51:34they get the more it suits the Canadians. No doubt Bob Dwyer will be getting a message
00:51:38out about that.
00:51:44The desire from Canada though continues and looking to keep moving the ball down
00:51:49the line. Tap kick for David Lloyd and David Campisi gets thrust in the back.
00:51:57He's the benchmark Campo isn't he? Everyone tests themselves on David
00:52:00Campisi. They get the better of him. Well they've had a good go. I guess it's
00:52:08tough being the best gunfighter in town. You're always on the job.
00:52:15Well those pistols have always worked well from his hips. Barging in the
00:52:23line out from Canada. Well they've been penalized an enormous number of occasions have they?
00:52:30Most of them of course have been inside their own half of the field so there's
00:52:33some discipline within that. But this is David Lloyd.
00:52:39Very quick runner is David Lloyd. Campisi cleans himself up so well. Scott Stewart back for it.
00:52:46Scott Stewart. There's a call from the far side from Gareth Rees and he's in a
00:52:51better position. Good reading of the game by Michael Liner. Started moving himself
00:52:58back early in the sense of that kick. Not finding touch again from Australia.
00:53:04Scott Stewart through Al-Juran.
00:53:10Canada managing to get their forwards to the breakdowns in relative numbers but
00:53:15they certainly are not able to bridge that advantage line closely. And
00:53:19Australia's defensive pattern inhibiting that. Tim Gavin, Wulof Ngawi
00:53:24and Anili Tambu have been very powerful in that area of the game.
00:53:29Australia's kicking game sadly straight at the moment. Not only David Campisi
00:53:33failing to find touch from I think three penalties now but also in general
00:53:37play. Matt Burke the fullback who's injured right now who's seeking some
00:53:41attention also failing to find touch. That would be a worrying aspect for
00:53:44Bob Dwyer. As we see Burke down now looks like it's his right knee that's causing him
00:53:48problems. Came in to make a big tackle and came off second best. Obviously we can see
00:53:53if there's some movement around the knee joint. Any major damage. Let's keep our
00:53:59fingers crossed that no player in the Rugby World Cup gets a serious injury.
00:54:05Here it is. There's a big tackle. I will almost think that knee met knee there.
00:54:12Matt Burke's come off second best.
00:54:16A little breather for both sides. Perhaps the Canadians need it more than the
00:54:20Australians but psychologically Australia will want to perform the
00:54:24basics a little bit better than they've done in the first half.
00:54:35Slattery's feet. Kearns' foot. Gavin's feet.
00:54:43Michael Lyner just managing to slip that one out.
00:54:50That one was very close to not going in. It's surprising the Australians.
00:54:56They should be shortening the distance. Not being so greedy.
00:55:03The Rugby World Cup has been a success thus far for the line-out men of
00:55:08Australia but it's Canada that come away with it.
00:55:12Graff's feet to Rhys. Christian Stewart looking to try and punch his way past
00:55:18Jason Little, David Lougheed. He'll need a little bit more space than that will
00:55:22David Lougheed. Rod Snow takes. A lot of people will be surprised with the amount
00:55:29of position that Canada have managed to rest in this match.
00:55:37Desperate efforts there from Tim Gavin to keep that ball on Australia's side.
00:55:45Canadians pushing a few of the forwards out into the backs but once again
00:55:50bridging the advantage line is not an easy task for them. Turnaround for
00:55:56Slattery.
00:56:00A quick kick from Michael Lyner. Now David Lougheed will want to try and just make
00:56:04sure that he gets out there because Campisi, Offer and Gowie right on his
00:56:09toes. Quick throw in there from Jason Little. Well the free kick has been given
00:56:18for deliberately handing the ball down. Slattery takes the short one to Warwick
00:56:22Wall.
00:56:28Behind the line says referee Patrick Robin. This is almost a carbon copy of
00:56:36what happened in the far corner where Australia were delayed the opportunity
00:56:40of a quick tap and a belt from the forwards. It's Peter Slattery there down.
00:56:48A handy risk for both teams here. A chance for the Nathans side to get their defence in order.
00:56:56Seeming the second time that Peter Slattery has been treated for some pain
00:57:01around the chest and will have been from that big tackle on him in the first half.
00:57:05Chest, rib area. They might have hurt a rib there. They don't miss out there the
00:57:11Canadiens when they make a tackle.
00:57:15Looks like we have a problem with the contact lens. Peter Slattery has taken.
00:57:22I think it's from his own player. Warwick Wall came over. I think he might have
00:57:26dropped his knee from Warwick Wall. The Galagum Bone Giant, that's Warwick Wall's nickname.
00:57:31Well the man on the other side was Big Rod Snow so it was a real sandwich for
00:57:35Peter Slattery and he makes a slice of cheese in the middle, doesn't he?
00:57:43Well what will it be now? Slattery, Gavin Wapangawi, Tambua.
00:57:51Signal from the referee for a knock-on by Australia.
00:58:01Australia knocking off on the job there. They had the ball in control. A little bit loose.
00:58:10Incomplacency perhaps. Well this is a big scrum for Canada as they're going to have
00:58:20to try and stand them in there. Perhaps an eight man coming from Australia.
00:58:27I want to make amends for that knock-on. Just look at the powerful scrum from
00:58:32Australia. Graff manages to get it and then back to Rhys. Now what does Campisi
00:58:38do with this one?
00:58:41A step from him and then Matt Burke. It's a good up and under from Matt Burke.
00:58:49Big jump coming from Tim Gavin.
00:58:55Well the Canadians penalised on that occasion for killing the ball. Going over
00:59:00the top. Yes. Not sure who that is. I think it could be the scrum half. John Graff.
00:59:09Yes it is. Great take by Michael Liner. Al Charron has come over the
00:59:15ball there and absolutely killed it. There was no chance of that coming out.
00:59:20Well Liner's called for the short one. He's not going to kick it. Goal. Touch to him and
00:59:27then on to Offringawi. That was a great tackle on Offringawi.
00:59:33Across to Mark Hartill. Australia would really just want to suck in as many
00:59:41players as they can. Scrum attacker's ball.
00:59:50Well the offhand go away. He's injured. Just to the left there. That's Mark Hartill
00:59:54getting up. Last man with the ball in his hand. I think the Australians are
00:59:58isolating themselves there. Moving away from their power base.
01:00:02Run a little bit straighter. Take the opposition on. Keep it tight.
01:00:09They're regrouping opportunities for both sides. John Eales in the background.
01:00:13A little chat to the rest of his forwards about the job that needs to be
01:00:17done. Mark Hartill got up rather slowly. But
01:00:23what do you offer in Gowie is the man being treated?
01:00:32The big question now is with the put in. Can Australia push the Canadians back
01:00:36over their line? They have the weight advantage. They have the skill and the
01:00:39technique. Tim Gavin at the back. Tim Gavin holds. The push comes from Australia.
01:00:53I think Australia again too fancy. Just kick the ball to the back of the scrum.
01:01:00Take the scrum over the line. The way he goes. Ron would have sensed that that
01:01:05opportunity existed for Tim Gavin.
01:01:09The real shambles in that scrum as it
01:01:17goes through the 90 degrees.
01:01:23All indications from the referee that it's yellow ball. So
01:01:26let's see what Australia do now.
01:01:31Territorially everything going Australia's way
01:01:34in the first half. Second half a little bit more pressure.
01:01:40Gavin with a hold. Can they keep that
01:01:44scrum straight? The Canadians have collapsed that scrum seemingly.
01:01:49I would imagine Australia will take another scrum here.
01:01:52I'll keep working. I'll keep the pressure on. Tony Daly.
01:01:57Last man to his feet. Holding the back of his head.
01:02:01There must be some pressure in those scrums.
01:02:06Well I sense that some of the Canadian or the Canadian front row saying oh no
01:02:10not again. Well now they've got to go.
01:02:16Eddie Evans on the near side for Canada. Can't keep it up.
01:02:19Slattery and liner. Switch. Beautiful switch to Campisi. That was a double
01:02:23switch and great running by the right wing.
01:02:25Can he stay on his feet?
01:02:29Well this is a lovely platform for Australia.
01:02:32Ofer Ngoi picks up. Can Ofer Ngoi get over?
01:02:37Slattery with a third occasion. It's Michael Liner.
01:02:48You can only absorb so much pressure and some great thrusts from the Australian
01:02:53team. A couple of metres out.
01:02:56Leo Fangari takes it. Spins around. Three defenders to hold him out. He just
01:03:00doesn't quite get there. Slattery gets in there. Michael Liner in
01:03:03position and just straight through a very simple tackle there. I'm quite
01:03:07surprised. Scott Stewart was found it difficult to
01:03:10get him. Actually it wasn't Scott Stewart. Steve Gray missed the tackle
01:03:13unfortunately and just too easy for Michael Liner. That's
01:03:17his second try in two games and the first points in the
01:03:21second half.
01:03:30Well as we see the Australian prop Ian McKenzie down on the
01:03:36touchline. Possibly going to be a replacement in this match for
01:03:41Mark Hartill one senses who's down there at the moment.
01:03:48He's not looking happy at all. Now it's his first test since 1989. It's been a
01:03:54long wait for Mark Hartill. I'm sure he wouldn't like to be coming
01:03:57but he did look distressed as Michael Liner
01:04:00lines up for his sixth fifth shot at goal.
01:04:03So far he's only missed one. That's right.
01:04:07Late in the second. Late in the first half.
01:04:11The rhythm is back. The strength in the boot.
01:04:14The concentration. The focus.
01:04:19Two steps. Three steps forward and that's safely through.
01:04:25Three tries. Three conversions from Liner.
01:04:38Not easy coming onto the field as a replacement but Australia then
01:04:4222 points the difference. Thumping tackle on Tambua.
01:04:49Slattery with a knock on. Well on three occasions that I've picked
01:04:54up in this match one senses that Peter Slattery has not
01:04:57had the support and protection from the men close to him in the
01:05:01rucks and mauls and those scrums. It's a little bit sloppy
01:05:06certainly for Peter Slattery's standards at the back of the rucks and mauls today
01:05:10but uh what about that tackle? Surely Tambua feels the heat and I guess
01:05:16Slattery's been a little bit injured and that may have also put him off his
01:05:19game.
01:05:22Well Russell it could well be some problem in the rib cage for
01:05:27Peter Slattery. Third occasion now that he goes down.
01:05:31Peter Slattery's a Queenslander. A tough, a tough young little player. He's not
01:05:36big by any measures but the heart is enormous.
01:05:40He's played over 100 games in the succession for his Queensland side so
01:05:46you know he would be feeling the heat right now.
01:05:52Well he's hanging in. It's a quick call from his fellow players. Slats, slats, keep an
01:05:57eye on them.
01:05:59Graf with a pick up and then the referee gets in the way.
01:06:03Well the Canadians will not be really happy with that. Least of all Scott
01:06:06Stewart throws his arms up.
01:06:15Mark Hartill doesn't look in a very good way.
01:06:19Looks like he's in a great deal of pain. Pick up at the back by Jaron.
01:06:25Good, good passing by the Canadians and then a
01:06:29head-eye tackle there on Steve Gray.
01:06:34Once again Canada getting possession. Well Australia were in an offside
01:06:38position. That was Phil Kearns. Quick take there by Gareth Rees. Can they
01:06:41spread it quickly enough? Kyle Skoboda taken on by Mike James.
01:06:49Well lots of indiscipline there from
01:06:53from both teams but Canada will once again look to run it.
01:06:58Great passing from them. David Lougheed. Not too many men get past David Campisi.
01:07:04Canada clean up well and then take through.
01:07:09Well plenty of action from Canada.
01:07:20That's how close we are to
01:07:26the Australian line. Canada have not been able to bridge it. Just the two penalty
01:07:31goals from Rees and once again good jumping from heels. He
01:07:34couldn't hold on though.
01:07:39Dennis Fabry cleans up the ball. Tap down. Two-handed tap down.
01:07:43Brian's gone for the percentages. Thought they'd
01:07:46just force it. That is to have a scrum five metres from the Australian line.
01:07:50It's the Aussies turn. The Wallabies turn to feel it.
01:07:53Ewan McKenzie on the field then for Mark Hartill.
01:07:56So fresh pair of legs in the front row for Australia.
01:08:03Canada will want possession. Titanic struggle going on in the front.
01:08:08That's Gordon McKinnon with it.
01:08:12The physical side are the Canadians. John Graff.
01:08:15Gareth Rees. Good quick swift passing from them. Then Christian Stewart
01:08:19into the middle. Australia were offside so Canada have the
01:08:25penalty option.
01:08:29The big question is are they going to take Australia on? Yes they are.
01:08:33Graff back inside to Gareth Rowlands.
01:08:38Graff himself looking to try and go through.
01:08:41Seemingly no way through that Australian defence.
01:08:46Still the big push comes from them.
01:08:52Canada looking to make it available. Well it'll be a scrum attacker's ball.
01:08:57Watching there. No one's moving from their seats. This is
01:09:08everyone wants to see this. They want to see the Canadians get a try.
01:09:12They're doing their best to get one. Well they've got in close on a number of
01:09:15occasions and then just haven't managed to get over the line.
01:09:19Some great tackling by the Australian loose forwards in particular.
01:09:27Oh Russell there were cheers and boos from the crowd. So
01:09:32supporters for both sides. Yes Australia has the advantage there.
01:09:37Scrum's in the opponent's 22. It's been all Canada for the last five
01:09:41or six minutes. They've been camped up in
01:09:44Australian territory. Can the Australians get themselves out of jail?
01:09:48Slattery will look for Birkley. Looks for Campisi on this occasion. That's a huge
01:09:52punt from Campisi. Once again not going out. No heed.
01:09:56Stewart. Other Stewart.
01:10:01Too much lateral movement by the Canadians.
01:10:07Great pick up there by Wiliopengawe.
01:10:13Well not too much room to move on the close side but Australia did well to
01:10:17turn that over. Quick throw in by Canada. Christian
01:10:22Stewart almost caught unawares. And then it's Winston Stanley
01:10:27Australia robbing them of possession and
01:10:30then Jason Little is the man going in. Play certainly getting a little loose for
01:10:35Australia's liking probably. Tambua. Probably takes three or four men to
01:10:41bring down the big man.
01:10:46Well Tambua will be disappointed that he didn't get close in support from his
01:10:49fellow players and was forced almost to hold on to that ball.
01:10:55No retreat from Australia and Russell the
01:10:58indiscipline continues. Yes the linesman's on. I'm unsure what this one's
01:11:02for. Very first time that the linesman's
01:11:06been on. So it's obviously a serious offence.
01:11:10Jason Little is down in back play and that's where the linesman is pointing to.
01:11:14Looks like he's going to call out the Australian players. Calling out the
01:11:17Australian captain. Michael Liner and Phil Kearns. Phil Kearns
01:11:21has already had one portion. The punch in the first half and the
01:11:26referee is speaking to him on his last warning. I would imagine any
01:11:31more problems and he'll be off.
01:11:37Well just the one warning then given to Phil Kearns as
01:11:40Canada storm ahead.
01:11:46Matt Burke with the stop there. Almost breathed some
01:11:50fresh legs into the Canadian team.
01:11:54They've moved the ball very quickly down the line. They haven't always managed to
01:11:57bridge that advantage line though.
01:12:01Tim Horan expanding on that high work rate of his.
01:12:04Graf. Too sure what to do with it. There's Gareth Rowlands.
01:12:10Graf long one out to Al Charon and then Winston Stanley.
01:12:18Canada must almost be wondering when they're ever going to get
01:12:22through this Australian back line if at all.
01:12:31Good passage of play there to Canada. Held the ball. They ran out of options
01:12:35over there. They needed to set, reform and just go straight up again.
01:12:39Also they're trying to move the ball a little bit too much. A problem the
01:12:42Australians have right now as well. Well the problem exists for Canada
01:12:46because if they get rid of it and kick it downfield or kick it into
01:12:49touch they haven't been winning the lineouts.
01:12:51So that puts more pressure on them but it's Lionel who fails to find touch.
01:12:55The switch around to Winston Stanley. That was good play by the Canadians.
01:13:02Lots of enterprise and lots of courage from the men
01:13:06from Canada.
01:13:16Australia would perhaps have been hoping for a greater cushion than that
01:13:20but more importantly for them they needed to get their game together.
01:13:27Fluency has only been seen in dribs and drabs as Gareth Rees goes on the inside.
01:13:36John Graf has got an enormous amount of possession of light as
01:13:40John Eales comes through. Good timing from John Eales.
01:13:46Taken on by Gareth Rowlands.
01:13:50He's caught his own players unawares there as he went bursting through.
01:13:56Taken on by McKinnon.
01:14:00Seemingly no way through. That's Winston Stanley and Karls Bover.
01:14:05Can they stretch it now? Can they stretch it wide enough?
01:14:10Rod Snow the last man to come in and the first scorer for Canada in Rugby World
01:14:15Cup 95. Well this time it's Australia that are
01:14:20penalized for deliberately collapsing that ball.
01:14:29Referee Robburn saying you can't play yet. Will that delay will allow
01:14:32Australia to regroup somewhat?
01:14:39Well it's penalties aplenty Russell. Yes Michael Arnott
01:14:43played out while he was off the ball but you've got to take your hat off to
01:14:45Canada. This is the way people want to see World
01:14:48Cup rugby played. They want to see the ball in hand. They want to see people
01:14:51running not kicking and if you're a if you're a fan of
01:14:53rugby out there you've just got to be applauding these Canadians. They've done
01:14:56a fantastic job. The world champions well not being phased
01:15:00by them that's for sure. Their woes continue with their line
01:15:04kicking in the second half. That's David Lougheed.
01:15:08Ewan McKenzie picks that up. Then Slattery really going that deep
01:15:15from Peter Slattery as Scott Stewart picks up.
01:15:23Can Canada keep it available or it comes out Australia's side?
01:15:30Disruption for Australia and then pick up from Jason Little. Well the referees
01:15:35let them keep going. Now can Jason Little make something of this?
01:15:38He's big and strong.
01:15:44Well a penalty there has been given when France is against
01:15:47John Eales for deliberately pushing against the man. Well it's Winston
01:15:52Stanley. There's action aplenty here at the
01:15:54Budapest.
01:15:57Now can Canada make something of this? Timmy Horan
01:16:02comes across to recover for Australia.
01:16:07Michael Liner.
01:16:11Slattery again.
01:16:15Well that ball was played on the ground by the Canadians.
01:16:19Eddie Evans playing in his 30th match for his country.
01:16:26He dropped the eye on the sideline there.
01:16:28Again concerned. Yes. Stats are starting to favour the Reds.
01:16:35It's starting to go well there. And with the ball
01:16:38any side can win the match. But wasn't a super run by Winston Stanley there.
01:16:43Wrong footed Joe Roth and made plenty of space and didn't he have some support
01:16:47there? Slattery out to Michael Liner. Almost a
01:16:51high shot here but not too bad. Liner plays the ball back. Gets rid of it.
01:16:56Slattery has it. Surprised at the penalty. I thought it
01:17:00should have been, referee should have worked that flow.
01:17:04One fancies that there's an injury to Gareth Rowlands and
01:17:08maybe even Phil Kearns. Yes looks like a shoulder injury for Phil Kearns.
01:17:13That shoulder. He has had a problem with that shoulder in the past.
01:17:16He will be replaced. That'll be the chance for
01:17:22Michael Foley to make his debut for Australia. Should Phil Kearns leave the
01:17:26field? Yes here he is. Number 21.
01:17:32Michael Foley. As you'd imagine his nickname is Axel.
01:17:38Well a great chance then for him. That's good play by Michael Liner with a switch
01:17:42around. Now can Horan make something of this
01:17:44for John Graff? He's got pace and he's got power.
01:17:50Kick inside. Favours got John Graff. He's been a busy player today has John
01:17:56Graff for Canada.
01:18:00Not a very big man but lots of courage.
01:18:05Back to Gareth Rees.
01:18:09Well it was all defence there for Canada. They could not run out of their own 22
01:18:12with the tight defence from Australia. Well
01:18:15disappointing there for Gareth Rowlands leaving the field and being replaced
01:18:19by Glenn Ennis. Rowlands was brought into this team to lend a bit of
01:18:24impetus in the line outs. Unfortunately he's had to leave the field as has Phil Kearns.
01:18:29Michael Foley's throw-ins to the line out are excellent.
01:18:39Let me tell you he hits the money every time.
01:18:43That may be the little edge if there's any that he has over
01:18:47Phil Kearns. Well such an important factor but Australia will be concerned if Phil
01:18:52Kearns has an injury of some proportion.
01:18:57Foley waiting in the wings gets his opportunity.
01:19:09Well that's two men in the front row that have changed. That's Phil Kearns.
01:19:15He'd be upset about having to come off the bat. He does not like to leave the field.
01:19:23Picked up the back by Gavin and then on the inside Tutambua. John Eales.
01:19:29Such lovely ball players John Eales. Slattery.
01:19:35Despite the injury, attention is still prepared to physically take on the
01:19:40Canadiens. Here's Peter Slattery.
01:19:56Well what does John Graff do with it now?
01:20:02Once again in their 22. Gareth Rees does he have any more options other than
01:20:05kicking? Australia do well to turn that scrum
01:20:09towards the touchline and then a bit of a lucky
01:20:13bounce for them. But Canada have certainly made their
01:20:17luck in this match and the opportunities and the few ones
01:20:20that were expected grew in proportion for them.
01:20:27Catch by Mike James and Graff to Rees.
01:20:36Campisi and Burke for it now. Will Burke look to Lincoln? No.
01:20:43Big upper number taken by Graff. One of the smaller men on the field.
01:20:48Lovely ball players John Graff and then Rod Snow comes away with it.
01:20:52He's a powerful man is Rod Snow. That was very good timing too. Pass to David
01:20:56Lougheed.
01:20:59Snow back on his feet but he was played without the ball.
01:21:04Graff taking the quick one.
01:21:08He's got a very slattery spawn. Up to Rees and then inside to Duran.
01:21:14Rees again. Rees again. He's still on his feet.
01:21:19Back it comes Australia's way. Well that was an interesting decision because
01:21:23it was almost as if it was kicked back by accident but Canada have the
01:21:27opportunity. They trail by 27 points to six.
01:21:31Surely an onslaught on the line Russell. It certainly wasn't a handball that was
01:21:35just an accidental play. Referee on the other side of the ruck and wall so
01:21:38he just couldn't see it. Eddie Evans with the drive through.
01:21:43Duran and then McKinnon.
01:21:47They've come so close and they just haven't managed to make it.
01:21:54Well there's a lot of people in this crowd that will be hoping
01:21:58for a Canadian try. If nothing else in this match they've
01:22:02tried their guts out to get up to that line. They've got there
01:22:05but never managed to get over. It must have been closer Gabby.
01:22:11The ball looked like it was resting on the line there. I mean you've got to wish
01:22:15that that was a try. Well that was the feeling of the crowd.
01:22:22That's Graff then with a pickup.
01:22:26Well that's the picture then. It almost looked like it was over the line
01:22:30and dragged back. But another opportunity for the Canadian pack and they hold up
01:22:37to give Graff a platform. Well that's the pickup there from
01:22:42blank forward John Hutchinson.
01:22:59Just the seven minutes left in this match then Australia lead by 27 points
01:23:03to six.
01:23:06Replacements Mark, Ewan McKenzie and Michael Foney in the front row.
01:23:21Canada will be asking as much as possible from those eight.
01:23:25Jaron with a pickup. This is a good drive this by
01:23:29John Hutchinson. Graff's pickup.
01:23:36One can take nothing away from Australia's defence. It's been
01:23:40absolutely outstanding in these positions.
01:23:47Offering Gowie coming in from the side of that ball.
01:23:52Glenn Ennis head down. Is he over?
01:23:57Well the referee was very well positioned.
01:24:00But the Canadians throwing their arms up not knowing what else they've got to do
01:24:04to get over this line. It's almost as if this match rests on
01:24:09them scoring a try.
01:24:15Here was the drive through.
01:24:22Well the try has now gone their way.
01:24:28Scored by Al Charon. Playing at number eight. That's his second try
01:24:33in the World Cup. Scored against Romania as well.
01:24:46That's just reward for the number eight. He's had an excellent Rugby World Cup.
01:24:51Been quite the pick of the Canadian forwards.
01:25:04Just a couple of minutes left in this match so
01:25:10the scoreline of Australia's is not really going to be threatened
01:25:15to the point of of them getting beaten. The kick from Rhys is wide.
01:25:2127 points to 11 then. Australia lead. This was the put in from Graff. The quick
01:25:26pickup from Charon. And he had enough support and enough
01:25:30drive from his fellow players to get over.
01:25:41Johnny Yills coming in for liners. Kick he can't catch. Would Canada have it again?
01:25:47Once again looking to run it down the back line. They've handled impeccably at
01:25:50the back. Scott Stewart held up by Jason Little
01:25:55and Tim Horan. Gordon McKinnon coming away with a very
01:25:59physical player. Once again they have possession in
01:26:03numbers. Rhys looking to go on the inside. He's
01:26:06still got possession. Rod Snow
01:26:10taken on by John Hutchinson. Canada have been all over Australia in
01:26:15these last few minutes. Christian Stewart finding space. Switch
01:26:21on the inside to Scott Stewart.
01:26:25Well Slattery will want to bring back some normality for Australia.
01:26:32But liner it looks to run it. This is Tommy Horan. Now this will be an
01:26:36interesting race because Campisi's on his outside.
01:26:39Now Campisi has it. Pace. Power. But he's beautifully tackled.
01:26:46That was a great tackle there from Winston Stanley. Coming across from the
01:26:49right wing.
01:26:54Great running by Campisi but really take nothing away from Winston
01:27:07Stanley. Camp flying across the field.
01:27:11Australia's injury woes continue.
01:27:24you
