00:00G'day, I'm Paul. So this car behind me, it signals a brand new styling and technology direction for Hyundai.
00:06It is called the Hyundai IONIQ 5. Now, this is going to compete with things like the Tesla Model 3
00:12slash Model Y, the upcoming Nissan Ariya and the Volkswagen ID.3. Today
00:18I'm going to take a detailed look at the IONIQ 5. If you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this video,

00:36Okay, let's talk exterior. So I'm seeing this for the first time in person myself.
00:40I had a look at it in pictures, and it looks really small in pictures,
00:43but here in person is actually way bigger than it appears in images.
00:46I'll take you through the dimensions in just a sec, but let's have a look at some of the design highlights.
00:50So you've got nine exterior colors to pick from. Two of those are matte colors, and have a look at some of these
00:55highlights down the front here.
00:56So you have this strip down the bottom, which has LED lights built into it. When these aren't on, that just looks like a matte
01:03glass finished cover.
01:05So the LED lights light up there and really give it a lot of definition. Even down to things like this plate along the front.
01:11So it's got a camera integrated into there,
01:13but it's flat and you can see the squares built into that as well. Over with the headlights, again, full LED headlights with automatic
01:20high beam. You can see that square theme continues along the outer edges of them as well.
01:25The bonnet then sits flush with this lower section.
01:28It really has a presence to it, and I think they've done an excellent job in giving this car a concept car look,
01:33but this is pretty much what it's going to look like, so they're not going to tone it down or change it for the road.
01:38So I love the way that it looks. Let me know in the comments section below.
01:40Do you think the design is there? Is it over the top? Down here as well,
01:44this is a pre-production car, so some of these features aren't going to be final,
01:47but you will have active aero down the bottom here.
01:50So these vents will open and close with certain conditions in the car,
01:54whether it needs cooling and that kind of thing. We'll jump around to the side.
01:57It's like 20-inch alloy wheels. Now, I know that we've spoken previously about alloy wheels being hard to clean.
02:03I think this would give some of you nightmares in terms of cleaning them, but they look sensational here in person.
02:08So you can see that whole inner section is closed off the aero, and then up the top
02:12you have that sort of flat chrome look with piano black down the center.
02:15These are a low-profile tyre, and the final product will have a Pilot Sport EV tyre fitted to it,
02:22but I think here with the 20-inch alloy wheel, it looks really great.
02:24And along the wheel arches, you'll see this is in the design theme of a camera shutter,
02:29so you can see how they've managed to integrate that, and I think this looks good because it
02:33doesn't go over the top like some SUVs with those black cladded wheel arches.
02:38This really just has that nice look to it that gives it just a bit of style and substance.
02:42Now, let's talk about the dimensions quickly.
02:44So it measures a little over 4.6 metres long, a little under 1,900 millimetres wide,
02:49about 1,600mm tall, and it sits on a 3-metre wheelbase.
02:53Now, to put those numbers into context, the wheelbase is actually around 100mm longer than a Palisade,
02:58and Palisade is huge, so that means a lot of interior space, and we'll get to that in just a second.
03:02As we move down the side, you can see more piano black around the edges there,
03:06indicator built into the wing mirror with a camera as well.
03:09With the styling down the side, these crease lines run down the length of the car,
03:13and then down the bottom here, you actually have these sections that sit inwards of the panel.
03:17Again, it just really flows on from the front and then down the side of the car.
03:21This has a full glass roof.
03:22These will be available, although potentially not in Australia, with a solar roof,
03:26so that's going to add extra charge to your 12-volt battery,
03:29and then supply a little bit of charge to the car's battery as well.
03:31But, you know, I've said all along that with solar roofs, I mean, they're only about 150 watts,
03:36so they're not really going to add a huge amount of potential to what your charging capacity is.
03:40This one here, on the other hand, just has a full glass roof,
03:43so we'll have a look at that when we get inside.
03:44The door handles are an interesting design as well,
03:46so as you unlock the car or approach the car with the key, they pop out like that,
03:50and to open the door, you just pull it and then close it,
03:52and when the door's locked, they sit flush with that panel there.
03:55So around the back here, let's start with the shark fin aerial.
03:57You can see it up the top there.
03:58Now, the spoiler actually has these exposed segments here for aero,
04:02so they come all the way through down that back glass.
04:04We've got piano black highlights around the spoiler,
04:07and then all of these lamps have these squares in them as well,
04:10so that continues that theme from the front end.
04:13I just love the look of this,
04:14because this is something that we haven't seen on any other cars on the road before,
04:17so it really makes it stand out,
04:18and at night time when you're following this,
04:20you're really going to know exactly what it is.
04:22Of course, being an EV and on a dedicated EV platform,
04:25no exhaust pipes, but they've tried to stylise this without going over the top.
04:29I know some EVs, they try and integrate faux exhaust pipes,
04:32but there's really no need for it,
04:34so look at that lower diffuser there with the parking sensors built in,
04:37and I think that's a quite stylish look to it at the rear.
04:40So, before we step inside, let's talk about the powertrains and the batteries.
04:44So, crack this open so you can see what that looks like.
04:47So, you have two different options available.
04:49You either have rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive,
04:51and then you have standard range and long range.
04:53So, the standard range uses a 58 kilowatt-hour battery,
04:57and the long range steps that up to 72.6 kilowatt-hours.
05:01And in terms of your power and torque,
05:02the entry-level two-wheel drive is available with 125 kilowatts of power
05:06and 350 newton-metres of torque.
05:09It's good for a 0-100 dash in 8.5 seconds.
05:12If you then step it up to the long range in two-wheel drive,
05:14it has 160 kilowatts of power and 350 newton-metres of torque,
05:18and it'll do the 0-100 dash in 7.4 seconds.
05:22But if you then move up to all-wheel drive with standard range,
05:24it increases to 173 kilowatts of power and 605 newton-metres of torque.
05:30It also brings the 0-100 time down to 6.1 seconds.
05:33Then if you go all the way to the top, which is this car here,
05:36all-wheel drive, long range, it's 225 kilowatts of power
05:40and a little over 600 newton-metres of torque.
05:42That also brings the 0-100 time down to about that five-second mark.
05:45So, this is really competing in the mix there
05:48with some of the high-performance EVs,
05:50and I'm really excited to see how it actually drives.
05:52Now, what about your charging capacity?
05:54This is another area that Hyundai has done a great job.
05:57So, you have three-phase AC that's capable of around 11 kilowatts.
06:01But if you go to DC, not only can you charge at 400 volts,
06:04but you can also do 800 volts.
06:06They have a patented technology here that uses the motor to operate an inverter
06:10that bumps that up from 400 to 800 volts.
06:13And it means that you can use a 350 kilowatt charger
06:16to achieve around 250 kilowatts of constant charge.
06:19So, that is really up there in terms of being able to charge rapidly.
06:23And then in terms of range, you have about 480 kilometres of WLTP driving range.
06:28So, that's entirely usable as well.
06:30So, we're inside the IONIQ 5.
06:31Let's start off with the key.
06:33This is what it looks like here.
06:34So, you have lock, unlock, push and hold for the boot.
06:38You have a button there to open the charge port.
06:40Just like the other Hyundai products that we've tested before,
06:42you can also do automatic parking and then remote start.
06:46Thing that's important to note about the automatic parking,
06:48this will do perpendicular and parallel as well from the key.
06:50But on the back, you have the Hyundai logo.
06:52It's a proximity sensing key.
06:54You can literally just approach the car, the door handles pop out,
06:56and then you hop inside, and then inside you have a start-stop button.
07:00Now, I just want to reiterate really quickly that this is a pre-production car.
07:04Some of the stuff you see here may not be in the final version,
07:07and some of the materials may not be exactly like the final car,
07:10but this is pretty much it.
07:11And in saying that, wow!
07:13I mean, yeah, this has seriously, seriously impressed me,
07:16and I'm not easily impressed.
07:19I like what they've done here in terms of the styling.
07:21Where they've gone for with this is really a lounge style.
07:25So, when you're sitting in here, it just feels like you're at home,
07:27sitting in your favourite chair and just relaxing,
07:30and that's the vibe I get when I'm sitting here as well.
07:32So, you have these two big screens ahead of the driver.
07:34You then have clear vision out of the actual car itself,
07:37and then all of these smooth surfaces that follow on from the theme on the outside.
07:41You even have here magnetic pads.
07:43You can keep pictures of things that are dear to you,
07:45which I think is pretty cool.
07:46There's a lot of recycled materials inside this cabin.
07:48So, for example, on the door here, more of those squares,
07:51and that's made out of recycled paper.
07:53So, they really have gone to a lot of effort to make this an eco-friendly car.
07:57Now, we're going to skip the build quality and the durometer section,
08:00because as I said, it's pre-production,
08:01and the build quality probably isn't amazing,
08:04and we'll reserve judgment until we actually drive the final car.
08:06Let's talk about infotainment.
08:08So, this gets Hyundai's latest infotainment system.
08:11It's two 12.3-inch screens.
08:13I'll run through this one first.
08:14We do have a more detailed review of this infotainment system,
08:18if you want to watch that, click up here.
08:19But today, we'll just go over the basics of it.
08:22So, 12.3-inch screen, you have shortcut buttons down the bottom.
08:25You can see that's that map display,
08:27and then what we can also do is go to the home screen,
08:29and here you'll be able to configure profiles,
08:32so that when you get into the car, they can be linked to your key.
08:34You can also get remote access to the car through your phone,
08:37as well, similar to what Tesla has.
08:39And then the rest of the menus are fairly familiar.
08:41So, you'll see things like your climate control,
08:43sounds of nature, the voice memo, which I absolutely love.
08:46But unique to this car in particular is the EV menu,
08:49and here you have the car's driving range,
08:51scheduled charging, and all the other bits and pieces
08:53that are critical to this being an EV.
08:56On the audio front, you have AM, FM, DAB+, digital radio,
09:00and an eight-speaker Bose-branded sound system with a subwoofer.
09:03But I love around the actual speaker itself,
09:05you have LED lights, including inside the doors that you can customise.
09:09So, you can flick between different colours
09:11and make it your own, which is pretty cool.
09:13Smartphone mirroring, you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
09:16Now, again, this is a pre-production car,
09:18so I don't know whether it's going to be wireless in the final version,
09:21but at the moment, this is wired for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
09:25But I love that display.
09:26It takes up the entire screen.
09:28It is incredibly sharp, and this is probably the quickest system
09:31I've ever seen before in terms of the way that it moves through those screens.
09:34And this is what Android Auto looks like.
09:37So, unlike Apple CarPlay, it's not a full-screen integration,
09:39so you only get that section of the screen plus this menu off to the side.
09:43But like Apple CarPlay, it's nice and quick and very snappy.
09:48Now, let's have a quick look at the screen ahead of the driver.
09:50You have your other 12.3-inch display.
09:53Now, this one's a little different to the rest of the Hyundai range.
09:55So they've updated the styling here, and you can see,
09:57you can flick through different menus to get other information.
10:01Then you can also move between drive modes using the button on the steering wheel,
10:05and that changes the theme as well.
10:07Again, really sharp and really fast as well.
10:10You can also see EV-specific things down the bottom too.
10:12Now, let's talk about safety technology.
10:14So you have front and rear autonomous emergency braking
10:17with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
10:19You have blind spot monitoring, not only in the wing mirror,
10:21but also in your displays on the screen.
10:24So when you pop the indicator on, that will come up with the camera.
10:26Not enabled on our pre-production car, but that's where it'll appear.
10:29You also have a head-up display that will be on a production car with augmented reality,
10:34so that will project safety information and navigation.
10:36We've seen that before in Mercedes-Benz products,
10:38and I think that's a really cool setup.
10:40Lane-keeping assistant, lane departure warning, driver attention monitor.
10:43You also have a semi-autonomous steering function too.
10:47Junction assist, so you can't turn across a junction with other cars coming.
10:50Really, it's just jam-packed with all the latest safety technology,
10:53and that's what you expect these days.
10:54And it's good to see that Hyundai has taken that seriously
10:56and just thrown everything at it.
10:58Now, let's quickly talk about parking as well.
11:00So in addition to the parking camera, I'll show you that in a second,
11:03you have the auto parking function that we went over earlier.
11:06So that's using your remote control.
11:08Then the reverse view camera, let's have a look at that.
11:10That's supported by front and rear parking sensors.
11:14Quality is not amazing though.
11:15I really would have hoped that they'd go with a higher quality camera here.
11:19Let's hope with the production car that they actually improve that
11:22and also include the right car in the image there as well.
11:25But yeah, it's got all your standard parking tech and features.
11:28I just wish that maybe the quality was just a tiny bit better.
11:31Okay, let's move on to practicality and we'll start with connectivity.
11:34You've got a whole bunch of options here.
11:35So down the front here, you have a USB port for your smartphone mirroring.
11:38You have a 12-volt outlet.
11:40Then in this center section here, you have two more USB ports
11:44and a Qi wireless charging pad down the bottom.
11:47Then in terms of storage, there is a lot here.
11:49So one storage slot down the bottom here.
11:51You can see that's a flat floor so you can store anything you want down there.
11:54You've got two cup holders here.
11:56You have more storage down here.
11:58You have a center armrest with storage that also moves out of the way
12:01so you can put a handbag or some other bits and pieces there.
12:05Inside the door, you have more door storage.
12:07Then down here, you have a glove box, but check this out.
12:10It's like a bin, so it just opens out.
12:12I haven't seen that before and that's just a really clever way to do things.
12:14So plenty of storage down the front here.
12:16Now, in terms of the actual practicality of the storage,
12:18this center section can move forwards and backwards.
12:21Now, you ask yourself the question, what's the point in that?
12:23Well, moving it all the way forward gives you more room in the second row.
12:27It also means you have a better driving position there.
12:30Then if you move it backwards, you can actually transition
12:32between the driver's seat and the passenger seat
12:33if you want to climb in through the side or something like that.
12:36It just makes that far easier
12:37because you don't have any impediments in the way there.
12:39In terms of other comfort features, you have climate control, dual zone.
12:43Now, the cool thing here is that it's all on this digital display.
12:45There's no buttons. It's all haptic feedback.
12:47And if you want to enable heated seats and that kind of thing,
12:49you just click on climate and then you have all of those controls there.
12:52Now, the seats on the comfort side, these are really interesting.
12:56So the design itself is great.
12:58I love that they've integrated the squares into there.
13:00You've got the sort of divots on the top section.
13:03It's kind of ribbed there.
13:04And then down here, you have the ventilated portion of the seat
13:07with that sort of stitching around the edges.
13:10Seat itself, though, they've had to think about charging.
13:12So in my Tesla, when I go to charge,
13:13I just sit there and watch TV or whatever I want to watch in the centre.
13:16But if they want you to kick back,
13:18you would have noticed these little things down the bottom.
13:20So this is the way this works.
13:29So it means while your car's charging, you can just kick back and relax
13:33and let the world go by as you put some juice in your battery.
13:37So I love that they've thought about that.
13:38That is such a clever setup.
13:40And it means that, you know,
13:42you can be relaxed while the car's sort of doing its thing.
13:44Let's talk quickly about the steering wheel.
13:45So it's a really interesting design because you've got those bottom section there.
13:48If you've seen our Genesis video, you would have seen it's a similar setup.
13:52The buttons are also new to Hyundai.
13:54So they're on a sort of glass looking plate.
13:56And then you push in on those to activate each of those buttons.
14:00Your drive mode is down here.
14:01It's a push button.
14:02Then the gear lever is different as well.
14:04So your stalks up here for the indicator and windscreen wipers are fairly normal.
14:08But instead of having a traditional shifter,
14:10you have this knob that sticks out on the side.
14:13And then you just flick it up or down to select the gear and push it in to go into park.
14:17So slightly different to a conventional car, but wouldn't take too long to get used to.
14:20The steering wheel itself sits nicely in the hand.
14:22You've got paddle shifters there to adjust your regen modes.
14:25And then all of these controls are easy to reach as well.
14:27So we're in the back seat.
14:29Legroom.
14:29Let's talk about that first.
14:30Check out the amount of knee room I have.
14:32It is ridiculous.
14:33So because of that wheelbase being longer than a Palisade,
14:36the packaging in here is fantastic.
14:38I don't have a great deal of toe room though.
14:40Quite wedged into there.
14:41Headroom is pretty reasonable.
14:43You can see here with this roof, it is huge.
14:45It comes all the way back to just behind your head.
14:47There's a cover that can also close.
14:50In terms of the seats themselves, you have storage in the back of the seats.
14:53With this being able to move forward, you can also pass through this row fairly easily.
14:57There's also two USB ports in there plus storage down the bottom.
15:00You have a center armrest here with two cup holders.
15:03You have heating for the second row over here.
15:05You have courtesy blinds as well, so people don't look in while you're driving around.
15:10Now, the interesting thing as well with the second row is,
15:12in addition to ISOFIX points built into this seat,
15:16beneath the seat you have bidirectional charging.
15:18That means that you're able to get a plug that sits beneath this seat
15:21or can be plugged directly into the charge port with an adapter
15:24and it will supply almost four kilowatts of power outbound.
15:27So you can technically charge another EV with this EV
15:30or run a toaster in an oven or something like that.
15:32And the significance of that is, in the back of a Ford Ranger, for example,
15:35the power point, it'll only do 150 watts.
15:38This will do almost 4,000 watts.
15:40So you actually have quite a lot more power capacity coming out of the battery.
15:43I forgot to mention, so here where you'd normally be able to move your passenger seat,
15:48you can actually now move and recline all of the seats.
15:51So you can move that one and then you can shift the second row from here as well.
15:55So that means that if someone is loading things into the boot,
15:57they can do it from the front without having to get out and move the seats around.
16:00Then the seat base itself is actually electrically adjustable by your rear passenger as well.
16:05Okay, let's talk cargo space.
16:07So being what is now, we know, a bigger car,
16:10let's have a look at how much space you actually have in here.
16:14So you have a little over 500 litres of cargo space available just here on the cargo floor.
16:19This particular car has the optional Bose sound system,
16:21which means under the cargo floor, you have a subwoofer.
16:24But this gives you an idea of how much space you have
16:28sort of alongside that if you didn't have the Bose sound system.
16:30It's not quite as deep as something like a Tesla.
16:32In my car, I can sort of put cables and stuff all the way down to the floor,
16:36but it's still pretty generously sized.
16:38We also have a 12-volt outlet off to the side there.
16:41I'll show you what it looks like without bags inside.
16:44There they are there.
16:45So has plenty of room left over for more luggage if required.
16:49Then what you can also do is expand the space to almost 1600 litres by dropping the second row.
16:55That gives you effectively a flat load space to pop all your things in.
16:59Okay, so that has been your first look at the Hyundai IONIQ 5.
17:02I am seriously, seriously impressed with it,
17:04and it may even replace my Tesla, potentially.

17:21so as long as it translates in real life to the range that they say that it has,
17:24and the charging that they say that it has,
17:26I think this has the potential to be a big contender in this segment.
17:30So yeah, watch this space closely.
