00:00 Hey, I'm Alex with Motor Trend.
00:01 Hey, I'm Eric with Motor Trend.
00:03 And we are here today with our Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6.
00:08 And we're going to do a little race today.
00:10 So underneath the skin, both of these cars are basically the same
00:13 riding on Hyundai's E-GMP electric vehicle platform.
00:17 And what we're going to do is we're going to start here in sunny Santa Monica
00:21 with 20% state of charge.
00:22 And then we're going to head north on PCH.
00:25 We're going to see whose car runs out of battery first.
00:28 Then we're going to call roadside assistance and see who can get to the charger first,
00:32 charge it to 80%, and then get back on the road.
00:36 It's like the dumbest race you've ever heard of, right?
00:38 Yeah.
00:38 You're going down.
00:40 All right, so departing Santa Monica with 20% state of charge
00:44 and 48 miles shown on the gauge cluster.
00:48 So the goal here is to be basically as inefficient as possible.
00:53 So I'm going to run in the highest regen mode, one pedal driving.
00:58 And I might as well endure cranking up the heat here as well.
01:01 So I'm going to put this on full blast, 82 degrees and level eight for the fan.
01:08 And it's going to get plenty toasty in this car, plenty quick.
01:11 So I might have to take this jacket off soon.
01:14 But let's get out of town and see what happens.
01:16 Oh, here we go.
01:18 I just popped it into sport mode and it dropped down from 48 miles shown
01:22 on the projection to 45 instantly.
01:24 So try and do some strong accelerations.
01:28 Pacific Coast Highway is kind of perfect for that.
01:30 So let's enjoy this thing's 443 pound feet of torque
01:36 and 4.4 seconds here in a 60 time along the way.
01:39 Why don't we?
01:40 All right, we just took a quick lunch break.
01:43 Apparently, leaving your car running while parked is considered cheap.
01:54 Anyway, I'm down to 9% 26 miles range.
01:57 Yes, I just got the low EV battery warning 10%.
02:03 All right, 3%.
02:06 3% 8 miles range.
02:12 Starting to feel a little range anxiety.
02:23 So we finally hit zero miles.
02:25 This battery is totally flat.
02:27 But what's funny is it actually gave me eight miles from the point it first told me that it was on zero miles.
02:32 So a little bit of bonus.
02:33 But now here I am.
02:34 I am flooring the accelerator and nothing is happening.
02:37 So it's time to call Roadside Assistance and see what happens next.
02:51 Uh oh, I think I'm dead.
02:52 Oh my God, I think I died.
02:58 I'm at the worst spot possible.
03:01 So the car's died 11 miles after the battery ran down to zero.
03:10 Or we got zero miles of range.
03:12 One hour later.
03:12 [Music]
03:24 So now we're here.
03:26 We have contacted Roadside Assistance.
03:28 They sent us a text.
03:31 It might be a two hour wait.
03:33 Hopefully it's faster than that.
03:34 Yeah, so the waiting continues.
03:40 I'm already out of the way.
03:41 Yeah, it's not over until it's over.
03:44 Not over until it's over.
03:45 [Music]
04:01 Oh hey, where are you?
04:03 Oh, the beach looks nice.
04:08 You haven't actually gone anywhere.
04:11 That's too bad.
04:13 Well, I'm plugged into a 350.
04:18 So 15 minutes to 80.
04:22 Where's your tow truck?
04:23 Dude, it's so crazy.
04:25 So they texted me an update with a tracking link.
04:33 And the driver is just now leaving downtown Santa Monica.
04:37 Oh man.
04:38 Sweet.
04:39 All right, well, good racing against you.
04:43 Good one.
04:44 Yeah, it was fun.
04:45 Yeah, cool.
04:46 Well, keep me posted and we'll talk soon.
04:48 All right, later man.
04:50 All right, so that was Eric.
04:56 He hasn't even moved from the beach yet.
04:57 So this one's in the bag.
04:59 Another win for the Hyundai IONIQ 5.
