00:00The 34-year-old woman was alone at a suburban house in Townsville when she was attacked
00:07by her own dog just before 7 o'clock this morning.
00:10She managed to trap the dog, believed to be a kind of pit bull, inside and get outside
00:15the property when neighbours called for help.
00:19Police say officers rushed to the scene.
00:21Can I please acknowledge my first response officers, my young constables that attended
00:25there.
00:26They applied tactical first aid, a tourniquet.
00:30Whilst I'm not a medical professional, I submit that it is quite reasonable that they have
00:35saved her life.
00:37Her blood loss was quite extensive and that tourniquet has pretty much ceased that blood
00:41loss and I commend them for their efforts under a very high pressure situation.
00:47The woman suffered serious injuries in the attack, losing her hand and part of her forearm.
00:53Police say they had no option but to shoot the dog dead at the scene.
00:58Unfortunately the safest way for everyone to do it involved the euthanasia of that dog
01:04and I know people will be very upset by that but we had no other option and to do it safely
01:14that was the only option we had, the safety of our police and the safety of any other
01:18members of the community should that dog have got back outside.
01:22The woman is now in a serious but stable condition at the Townsville University Hospital.
