A woman is fighting for life in hospital and three pets have been shot dead after a dog mauling in Melbourne's southeast. Police say they were forced to shoot as a last resort after nothing else could stop the animals' savage attack. A warning, this report contains disturbing details.

01:09They say the dogs were pets, two bulldogs and one pit bull, which the victim's partner had raised from pups.
01:15Neighbours say the other people who live at the house tried desperately to stop the attack before police arrived.
01:22Climbing the fences and trying to distract the dogs, but there was nothing anyone could do.
01:28Neighbours told the ABC the pets were known to be aggressive and had allegedly attacked before.
