00:00Earlier, we played Ulbricht talking about Hackett and it was embarrassing.
00:10It was literally the most embarrassing thing I've ever, that I think I've ever seen.
00:14Like he was talking about how he's going to give us his all.
00:17I'm so proud to know him.
00:19And I know he's going to give us the, you know, the, the, the Gipper.
00:23Like I, it was, it was so unbelievable.
00:26Like they, they demoted him.
00:28He's literally, I think, one step away from high school football.
00:32He's so finished with the Jets.
00:34It's not even funny.
00:35And they named this new guy to call the plays.
00:39So why act like they're not screwing Hackett and play this press guy?
00:45The guy wouldn't stop.
00:46He talked for five minutes about how wonderful Hackett is, even though everyone thinks he's
00:50a hack.
00:51Yeah.
00:52And you and I have talked about Nathaniel Hackett, the former Denver Broncos head coach
00:56who didn't even make out of one season.
00:58So basically what's happened here is, so the reason why they're keeping around, and a coach
01:03from another team, by the way, said, there's no way they should do this.
01:05It's dysfunctional, but I'll explain why they did it.
01:09Hackett's running a West Coast offense.
01:10This is the one that Aaron Rodgers has played in his entire career.
01:14And it's also, they're running his plays, as he was explaining to me by a coach with
01:18another team is you can't, you can't redo your scheme in, in, in season.
01:23You have to do it in the off season.
01:25So they have to keep his playbook.
01:26So Todd Downing, who was their passing game coordinator, and also, by the way, the quarterbacks
01:30coach, the other quarterbacks coach was fired in last spring.
01:35So, so Downing now is their play caller.
01:38The reason why Ulbricht likes him, as he explained to me, Downing coached Derrick Henry.
01:42He also coached for Jack Del Rio.
01:44And the one thing Del Rio wanted is a run game.
01:48Ulbricht's about the run.
01:49He's a defensive head coach, a defensive coach who's now an interim head coach.
01:53He wants a run game.
01:54Now, the thing is, though, Scott, and one of the, one of the things, and we haven't
01:58been together since Robert Sala got fired, and I'll give you a little bit of background
02:02on it.
02:03But one of the things that people are not talking about is how bad the run game has
02:06been with Brees Hall.
02:08Much better early in the season, lately it's been awful.
02:11And it has been a disaster, and this is their bread and butter.
02:14They don't run the ball very well.
02:16And there's nothing wrong with Brees Hall, as I'm told.
02:18He's healthy.
02:19He's fine.
02:20He looked fine coming off the ACL as last season progressed.
02:22So, they've got to get the run game going.
02:24Their defense under Ulbricht is fine.
02:26Now, I will tell you, inside the Jets building, inside their facility, inside their organization,
02:30Jeff Ulbricht's highly respected.
02:33As one league source told me today, a smart thing, as bizarre as it was, as bizarre as
02:39it was, is they're one game out of first place.
02:42If they win Monday night, technically they are in first place.
02:45But as bizarre as it is, you don't wait until five games before the season ends to fire
02:50your head coach if you like the interim.
02:52You do it as early as possible to give them a realistic chance at keeping the job or to
02:56evaluate them.
02:57Because, let's say the Jets, for argument's sake, week 13, week 14, the four games under
03:04500, where it's obvious Sal's got to go and maybe the whole staff's going to go, but you
03:08want to promote Ulbricht?
03:09It's too late then.
03:10Everybody knows the staff's out of there.
03:13Do this now and give the guy a better chance.
03:15And they've clearly underachieved.
03:16Let's call it like it is.
03:17And that's really one of the things that got Robert Sala fired.
03:21Let's face it, last year, you and I talked about this, after last season, it wasn't a
03:26given he was coming back.
03:28And talking to people who know the owner pretty well, Woody Johnson doesn't let people know
03:32what he's going to do.
03:33He just does it.
03:34But it's not on a whim, just so you understand.
03:37It's generally over a series of weeks and months.
03:39In this case, it's over a series of weeks where he puts together an idea, then he acts
03:43on it.
03:44And in a game where that offense was absolutely pitiful against Brian Flores, who's great,
