00:05about what they will do with the banana peel, how can we make use of it.

00:18First of all, the Department of Science and Technology,
00:21a facility, the Modular Multi-Industry Innovation Center,
00:26focuses on the use of various agro-industrial wastes and by-products
00:31such as peels, pulp, and seeds of various fruits, vegetables, and crops.
00:38One of these is the banana peel, which is a huge waste that we just throw away.
00:44This is where the concept of having money in the trash comes in,
00:47or in English, waste to help.
00:49This is a big challenge for our MSMEs, especially those in the food industry,
00:53who use bananas for their products.
00:58What other benefits can we get from this processing method?
01:05Our project aims to reduce the large volume of waste that is thrown away after processing,
01:12save on the cost of throwing away the waste, and increase the income of our industry partners.
01:19Through this, we develop alternatives to food,
01:24or food ingredients such as flour and dietary fiber,
01:29that can help our gut digestion.
01:32These are our main goals.

01:38What kinds of products can be used or made using banana peels?
01:45According to studies, 40% of banana peels are just thrown away.
01:52This is a big problem for our food industry, if this increases the volume of production.
02:00Through this S&T initiative, the project aims to use banana peels for various food applications,
02:09such as flour or flour, and dietary fiber for gut digestion,
02:16or for faster digestion of food in our stomach.
02:21This can be added to the income of our industry partners.
02:26Another benefit of our project is from the food industry sector,
02:30which spends more than P500,000 per year just to throw this away.
02:38So this is a big opportunity for us to develop new products.
02:44So we can have banana flour, right?
02:50Aside from banana peels, is there a plan to expand this project,
02:55such as valorization of other wastes, fruits, and vegetables?
03:01That's right.
03:02Valorization or value addition to agro-industrial wastes and by-products,
03:09which we thought were thrown away, is one of the goals of our center or MMIC.
03:15Some of the products included in our roadmap are banana peels, seeds, pulp,
03:22fruits, vegetables, and other vegetables such as mango, tomato, pineapple, garlic, onion,
03:29cassava, coconut, and various parts of fish and chicken that we just throw away.
03:34Our goal is to be able to develop various applications,
03:38especially for food applications for human consumption.

03:43As an S&T fellow in the DOS team,
03:46can you share with us the call for applications in your department?
03:51What are the details of this?
03:53Yes.
03:54DOST has a lot of programs to help partners in the industry
04:00as well as young professionals who want to join DOST in research and development.
04:06I will not be able to do this project with the help of the S&T Fellows Program of DOST.
04:15The number of young professionals in the S&T Fellows Program is increasing
04:20and there are currently 55 S&T fellows.
04:23We are currently looking for 31 S&T fellows assigned to various agencies of DOST,
04:31especially in the regions.
04:34The position is open for various fields of expertise.
