00:00In our interview this morning, we will talk about the companies and collaborations of the Ministry of Energy or Department of Energy
00:08that is promoting energy efficiency and conservation in every Filipino household.
00:14Let's find out their projects, programs, and companies together with Director Patrick Aquino,
00:19CESO 3, Director 4 of the Energy Utilization Management Bureau of the Department of Energy.
00:24Good morning to you, sir.
00:27Good morning to our viewers listening here in Rise and Shine, Philippines.
00:32All right, Director Patrick, how is the campaign of the Department of Energy different this year
00:37compared to the previous campaigns of your DOE agency?
00:42Well, our new program is what we call You Have the Power, Energy Efficiency Starts With You.
00:49Recently, we introduced you to the Madiskarte family.
00:54This is the family of Binibining Binlen and Ginuong Bayan Madiskarte
01:02who are fighting for action and happiness.
01:06The purpose of our program, we started it in a campus caravan in our schools
01:12with the help of the Presidential Communications Office or PCO
01:17where we want our students to learn the practices to be efficient in using electricity.
01:25They will look at the appliances that they don't use.
01:28They will fill them up.
01:30They will shift to more energy-efficient things.
01:34That is what we are doing, ma'am.
01:37Sometimes, you can see on our websites, we also have a comic strip
01:43that shows the Madiskarte tips that our Madiskarte family is doing.
01:49So, that is our new program.
01:52This is also an opportunity, in accordance with the directive of our President Marcos Jr.,
01:58to look at energy efficiency.
02:01Now, during Christmas, we buy appliances, right?
02:05That is why it is time for those who have bonuses,
02:08if we are going to buy, we should choose a high energy start or high energy efficiency rating.
02:14Okay. What other activities are the DOE and the PCO doing
02:20as part of the implementation of this campaign, You Have The Power, Director?
02:26Yeah. Aside from the campus caravan that we did,
02:30not only here in NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao,
02:33we also held events to air our comic strips, animation, and short films.
02:41We also held a contest where the output of our comic strips, short video films,
02:48and posters were made by our youth from our K-12 program.
02:55Aside from this, we also helped our private sector.
03:00There is also a mall caravan component.
03:03Our goal is to reach the women of Ilaw ng Tahanan,
03:08and our fellow countrymen,
03:11to let them know the things that can help them.
03:16If you practice energy efficiency,
03:18to be more efficient in using energy,
03:21not only will your expenses be lower in electricity or gasoline,
03:26what's more important is that our budget will be wider.
03:29That is our main goal to tell our fellow countrymen.
03:34We need to be a family to be discarded.
03:38How can an ordinary Filipino be included here
03:42and support the initiatives of the government
03:45regarding energy efficiency and conservation, sir?
03:49Our reminder is very simple.
03:53I won't repeat it.
03:55We're just tired of repeating it.
03:57But our reminder is simple.
03:59First of all, when we're at home,
04:01let's turn off the appliances.
04:03If we're not using it,
04:05let's turn it off.
04:07If it's power-stripped, let's switch it off.
04:10We have appliances that we don't know are still consuming
04:14when there's electricity.
04:16That's called a vampire load.
04:18If we're not really using it,
04:20let's turn it off or switch off the appliances.
04:23Second, we have a bonus.
04:26If you have an investment to make,
04:28if we're going to buy electricity,
04:30let's buy a light-emitting diode or LED.
04:33If we're going to buy a refrigerator,
04:35let's buy an inverter-type one
04:37or an air-conditioner.
04:39Then, let's clean our filters,
04:42let's maintain our air-con and electric fan.
04:46These are the biggest items
04:48when it comes to our homes
04:50that are consuming energy.
04:53The best thing for us is to practice.
04:56Let's not forget,
04:58when we're going out,
05:00for example, in our room,
05:02let's make sure that if we're not going back right away,
05:05all the appliances that we're not going to use,
05:08let's switch them off.
05:10Energy efficiency is free
05:12if you think about it
05:15and this is an opportunity
05:17to make it a way of life
05:19that we do every day.
05:21Let's make it a habit.
05:23What are the main challenges
05:25that DOE faces
05:27in promoting energy efficiency to Filipinos?
05:30How do you plan to address this
05:32through your campaigns, sir?
05:36The main challenge that we see
05:39is the awareness
05:41of our fellow Filipinos
05:44because when we go out,
05:46especially when we're traveling,
05:48whether we're going to school
05:50or to establishments,
05:52they don't realize
05:54that the appliances have standby power,
05:57there are technologies like inverters
06:00that are more efficient.
06:02The first thing that our fellow Filipinos see
06:05when it comes to energy-efficient technologies
06:08is that it's a bit more expensive.
06:10That's what we're saying.
06:12In the beginning, it's expensive
06:14but when we operate it,
06:16it's cheaper.
06:18So when it comes to our operational costs,
06:21it's more than double.
06:23Sometimes, the payback is fast.
06:25That's why it's worth investing here.
06:28Those are just practical tips
06:30that will greatly reduce your bill.
06:33When it comes to renewable energy,
06:35electric vehicles are increasing.
06:37Why is it advisable to use them, sir?
06:41Our beloved President said,
06:44if you can remember,
06:46last first semester of our country,
06:49he signed an executive order
06:51that will greatly reduce the cost
06:53to update, I mean,
06:55the cost to own our electric vehicles.
06:57He expanded the coverage
06:59of import tariff suspension.
07:01So if you look at the market,
07:03there are more electric vehicles
07:05that our fellow Filipinos can afford.
07:08But the primary reason
07:10why we want to switch to electric vehicles
07:12is that unlike when we run on oil,
07:16electric vehicles can run on renewable energy.
07:21It will help our energy independence,
07:24energy security,
07:26and more importantly,
07:28when we use battery electric vehicles,
07:30it has no emissions.
07:32It's quiet.
07:34It's safer.
07:36And the cost to operate per kilometer,
07:39it's a huge advantage
07:41if we compare it to cars
07:43that run on diesel,
07:45or gasoline,
07:47or oil products.
07:49That's what we're telling our fellow Filipinos.
07:51Now, ma'am, you might ask
07:53what we're arguing about
07:55aside from thinking that
07:57the upfront cost of our electric vehicles
07:59is expensive.
08:01What our fellow Filipinos are thinking
08:03is that they don't have to charge for it.
08:05They don't have to refill it
08:07because there's not a lot of gasoline
08:09in our electric vehicle charging stations.
08:11What we're telling our fellow Filipinos
08:14is that most electric vehicles
08:16are bundled.
08:18And based on your daily usage,
08:22you can do overnight charging.
08:24You just need a lot of public chargers
08:28if your route is flooded.
08:31Just like our logistics
08:33and public transport sector.
08:35But if you're an ordinary user
08:37like me, like you, ma'am,
08:39you can easily top up at home.
08:42And we can also see
08:44our malls and business establishments
08:46that have a lot of charging stations.
08:48Some of them are free.
08:50If you want to see where the charging stations are
08:52and the free charging stations,
08:54you can visit
08:56evindustry.ph.
08:58Okay, one last thing.
09:00What is your message or call to action
09:02to our viewers?
09:04Go ahead, sir.
09:06Thank you very much.
09:08Our National Energy Consciousness Month
09:10is coming up next month.
09:12Our fellow Filipinos
09:14are reminding us
09:16that you have the power.
09:18Energy efficiency starts with you.
09:20Let's work together for a new Philippines.
09:22Well, truly, you have the power.
09:24We have the power.
09:26Thank you very much, Director Patrick,
09:28for sharing your projects and campaigns
09:30for the Department of Energy.
