00:00President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. was heartbroken
00:04for the family of a Filipino in Saudi Arabia who was pardoned from death penalty.
00:09The President also expressed his support for them.
00:13Kenneth Paciente with the report.
00:17President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. was saddened by the arrest of a Filipino in Saudi
00:23after being pardoned from death penalty.
00:26According to the President,
00:27even though the government did everything to save the life of a Filipino,
00:31the family of the victim who was pardoned by the Philippines
00:36including the blood money, did not agree.
00:38We had very few options left.
00:40We tried everything and for many, many years.
00:43And the Saudi government really tried to look
00:51and to be sure that the judgment of hanging was actually deserved.
01:01Nonetheless, we appealed to the better natures against our friends in Saudi Arabia
01:11to perhaps have another look and they did.
01:15And unfortunately, the law there is very strict
01:19and apparently the conviction has stood and one of ours has been taken away.
01:30But, yes, very unfortunate.
01:34The President also said that the government has been pursuing this for several years
01:38and that the government's coordination with the Saudi government has been uncoordinated.
01:42This has been going on for how many years?
01:44It's around 5-6 years, sir.
01:46Yes, I remember, around 5-6 years ago.
01:49I came upon it when I came into office and they told me it's an old gun.
01:55And as I said, I guess Saudi tried to exhaust all possibilities.
02:00So did we.
02:02But to no avail.
02:05The Executive Board of the Philippine Family of the Victim,
02:09who asked not to disclose their identity,
02:12said that the government will provide all the needs of the family.
02:17We'll see what they need.
02:20But for someone who dies abroad, an OSW,
02:25we have many procedures for that, to bring them back home.
02:30So I don't think that will be a problem.
02:32The DMW is also helping the DFA to send back the Philippine victims.
02:37Gandy will also provide assistance to this family.
02:40We're working closely with the DFA on that matter.
02:45And we're assuring that we're assisting the family.
02:49The DMW has visited the family and assured them of our support and assistance.
02:58The so-called Filipino was sentenced to death after a Saudi national
03:03was accused of money laundering.
03:05Kenneth, patient.
03:07For Pambansang TV in Bago, Philippines.
