00:00Jack and the Beanstalk
00:05Once upon a time, there was a widow who was very poor.
00:09All she had was a lazy son named Jack and
00:15an old cow named Milky White.
00:20Every day, they would milk the cow and take the milk to market to get enough money to buy food.
00:26But one day, there was no milk to sell.
00:29There is only one thing left to do, cried the widow.
00:33We will have to sell Milky White.
00:40So Jack led the cow down the road toward the market.
00:46On the way, he met a strange little man who said,
00:50Good morning, Jack. And where are you going with your cow?
00:56I'm going to sell her at the market, replied Jack.
00:59Just so, said the strange little man.
01:03But do you know how many beans make five?
01:07Now Jack was as sharp as a needle, so he quickly replied,
01:11Two in each hand and one in my mouth.
01:14Just so, said the man.
01:16Then he took five strange beans from his pocket and said,
01:20And here they are.
01:22Now, because you're so sharp, I'll trade you these beans for your cow.
01:29Mind you, they're magic beans.
01:31If you plant them, they'll grow right up into the sky.
01:42Well, Jack knew a good bargain when he heard it.
01:45So he traded Milky White for the five magic beans.
01:50When he got home, his mother asked how much he had sold the cow for.
01:54You'll never guess, replied Jack.
01:57Look, five magic beans.
02:00Beans, cried his mother.
02:03Oh, you silly lad.
02:05Then she threw the beans out the window and sent Jack to bed without supper.
02:13When he awoke in the morning, Jack saw something outside his window.
02:18It was a huge green beanstalk growing right up into the sky.
02:23So, the man had told the truth after all.
02:27Jack began to climb the beanstalk at once.
02:31He climbed and he climbed.
02:35And he climbed.
02:38And finally, he reached the sky.
02:42There, he found a long road that led to an enormous house.
02:47And on the front steps was a huge woman.
02:51Good morning, said Jack.
02:53Might I have some breakfast?
02:56Breakfast, cried the woman.
02:58If you stay here, you'll be breakfast.
03:01My husband is a giant who likes to broil little boys and eat them on toast.
03:08But Jack was so hungry that the giant's wife took him into the kitchen and gave him something to eat.
03:14Before he had finished, Jack heard the giant's footsteps.
03:28The whole house seemed to shake.
03:31Quick, said the wife. Hide in here!
03:34And she pushed Jack into the oven.
03:36Just then, the giant stomped into the kitchen, roaring.
03:44Fi, fi, fo, fum.
03:49I smell the blood of an Englishman.
03:54Be he alive or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread.
04:05But the giant's wife said,
04:07You just smell the scraps of the boy you had for yesterday's dinner.
04:12When the giant had finished his breakfast, he took some bags of gold from a big chest.
04:17He set them on the table and began counting.
04:20Before long, his head began to nod.
04:24And soon, the whole house shook with the sound of his snoring.
04:37Jack crept out of the oven and went to sleep.
04:41The next morning, the giant woke up.
04:44Jack crept out of the oven, seized one of the bags of gold, and fled to the beanstalk.
04:50He dropped the bag down to his mother's garden.
04:54And climbed down after it.
05:03See, mother, he said.
05:05They weren't as bad as they seemed.
05:09See, mother, he said.
05:11They were magic beans after all.
05:14And so, for a time, they were able to live comfortably.
05:18They bought whatever they needed with the giant's gold.
05:21But at last, the bag was empty, and Jack decided to go up the beanstalk again.
05:27So, one morning,
05:32he climbed,
05:34and he climbed,
05:37and he climbed,
05:39and he climbed to the top of the beanstalk.
05:42Then, he went down the road to the big house, where the giant's wife stood at the door.
05:47Jack went right up to her and said,
05:49Good morning. Might I have a bite to eat?
05:53Go away, said the woman.
05:55If you stay here, my husband will take a bite of you.
05:59Then she said,
06:00Say, you look like a boy who came here once before.
06:04That same day, a bag of gold disappeared.
06:07Maybe I could tell you something about that, replied Jack.
06:11But right now, I'm too hungry to talk about it.
06:14Now, the giant's wife was curious, and she wanted to hear what Jack had to say.
06:19So, she took him into the kitchen and gave him some food.
06:22Then, everything happened just as it had before.
06:25The giant came home
06:27with a thump, thump, thump, and a fee-fi-fo-thump,
06:37and Jack hid inside the oven.
06:40Then, after the giant had eaten his breakfast, he roared,
06:44Bring me my hen that lays the golden eggs.
06:49And whenever he said,
06:51Lay,
06:54the hen laid a beautiful golden egg.
06:57Soon,
07:03the giant fell fast asleep.
07:10Jack grabbed the hen,
07:14ran to the beanstalk, and climbed down as fast as he could.
07:18When he got home, he showed the hen to his mother.
07:21And whenever he said,
07:23Lay,
07:25the hen laid a golden egg.
07:27So now, Jack and his mother always had plenty of money.
07:31But one day, Jack grew restless.
07:34So,
07:38he climbed on the roof of his mother's house.
07:41Jack grew restless.
07:43So,
07:46he climbed the beanstalk again.
07:49This time, he hid near the giant's house
07:51until the giant's wife came out to fetch some water.
07:54Then, he slipped into the kitchen and hid in a big copper pot.
08:02When the giant came in, he roared,
08:04Fee-fi-fo-thump.
08:09I smell the blood of an Englishman.
08:13It must be that boy who stole your gold and your hen,
08:16cried the giant's wife.
08:18If it is, he'll be hiding in the oven.
08:21They pulled open the oven door.
08:23But of course, Jack wasn't there.
08:25So, the giant sat down to breakfast.
08:30And when he had finished,
08:32he called for his golden harp.
08:34Sing,
08:36he said.
08:38And the harp began to sing.
08:47The beautiful songs made the giant sleepy.
08:58And before long, he was snoring as loud as thunder.
09:03Jack crept out of the copper pot
09:06and snatched the golden harp.
09:08But the harp cried out,
09:09Master! Master!
09:11And the giant awoke in a rage.
09:15Straight to the beanstalk ran Jack,
09:18with the giant close behind.
09:24Jack jumped onto the beanstalk
09:26and started climbing down.
09:28At first, the giant was afraid to get onto the wobbly beanstalk.
09:32But when he heard the harp cry out again,
09:39he started down after Jack.
09:41The beanstalk began to swing back and forth
09:44under the giant's weight.
09:46By this time, Jack could see his mother's house.
09:49He cried out,
09:50Mother! Bring an axe!
09:52And the giant,
09:54Jack could see his mother's house.
09:56He cried out,
09:57Mother! Bring an axe!
09:59And his mother came running with the axe.
10:01Jack jumped to the ground,
10:03seized the axe,
10:04and
10:06swung it at the beanstalk.
10:11Then he swung it again.
10:13And this time,
10:18the giant came crashing down
10:20and the beanstalk came toppling after.
10:25Jack showed his mother the golden harp.
10:28And whenever they said,
10:29Play!
10:31The harp played beautiful music for them.
10:34They grew rich from the hen's golden eggs.
10:37Jack even married a princess.
10:40And they all lived happily ever after.
