00:00Oh, but hopefully you were able to catch some of the action on Saturday and Sunday.
00:08It was a wild Saturday in college football.
00:10Looking at the slate didn't appear to be that way, but massive upsets in college football
00:16has put it on its head.
00:17And in the NFL, we finally got a very high scoring week, which is what we've been waiting
00:22for after the first month of the season has been complete.
00:25So let's get right to it.
00:26Although last night's game, you may have not caught it because it kind of felt like a
00:29West Coast NFL game due to the fact that they had a huge storm delay in Pittsburgh.
00:36But in the end, the game ended after midnight and the Cowboys end up beating the Steelers
00:4020 to 17.
00:42If you stayed up and watch it to the end, sort of a boring game, although Dak Prescott
00:45did throw for over 300 yards and a couple of touchdowns.
00:48Dallas gets back on the winning note.
00:51It was a passing touchdown to wide receiver to Jalen Tolbert, a name to watch for sure
00:57As things move forward, Brandon Cook's on the injured list.
01:00So Dallas goes to Pittsburgh and wins on somewhat of a damp, wet night in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
01:08last night.
01:09Well, meanwhile, it's a damp, wet day for the New England Patriots.
01:11A very bizarre story coming out of Foxboro and New England today as Jabril Peppers was
01:18arrested on Saturday in Massachusetts.
01:21Police said he'll be charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous
01:26weapon, strangulation and possession of a class B substance.
01:32And if you're interested in what that substance is, well, folks, that's what the internet
01:36is for this morning.
01:38Let's get to the latest on the football field and our headlines begin in London, where the
01:44Vikings keep rolling and the Jets put up yet another dud 23 to 17 as the Vikings cover
01:51the number.
01:52The Vikings defense by far the best in the National Football League this season.
01:57In fact, they made life miserable for Aaron Rodgers.
02:00He was picked off three times, sacked several times as well.
02:03And the Vikings are one of those undefeated teams remaining in the National Football League.
02:08Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals gave the Baltimore Ravens all they could handle and
02:12appear that they were going to win that game on Sunday.
02:14It was the same game back and forth, fumbling, interceptions, mistakes at the end, 41 to
02:21As Baltimore goes on the road, they cover the number barely two and a half point favorites.
02:25This one went way over the total of 47 and a half.
02:28Jamar Chase had a monster game for Cincinnati, but Derek Henry's run at the end of the game
02:33put the Bengals in position to win.
02:35And generally speaking, Justin Tucker did just that.
02:38It has done just that.
02:39The surprise team in the National Football League this season shouldn't be a surprise
02:42anymore.
02:43It is the Washington Commanders.
02:45Jane Daniels now a heavy favorite to win the rookie of the year and in some places is in
02:50the top five for MVP voting.
02:54The Commanders beat the Cleveland Browns 34 to 13, easily covering the number.
02:58They've been one of the best teams in the NFL this season.
03:01And also the Jaguars escape after being up two touchdowns with less than five minutes
03:06to play.
03:07Colts come all the way back.
03:08Thanks to Joe Flacco.
03:09But they kicked the late field goal final 37 to 34.
03:11Jaguars finally get a win.
03:13Yesterday, one of the more bizarre instances in the NFL occurred in the end zone, in the
03:18Buffalo Bills' own end zone, a game that could have easily went to overtime.
03:22But the Bills decided to throw not once, not twice, but three times out of the back of
03:26their own end zone.
03:27Incomplete, incomplete, incomplete.
03:28Give the ball back to Houston.
03:29Fairbairn kicks a long field goal.
03:31Houston wins just like that, 23 to 20.
03:34Very bizarre finish to say the least for Buffalo.
03:36All they had to do was run out the clock to get to overtime.
03:38But Sean McDermott, the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, was not particularly interested
03:42in doing that.
04:13Buffalo Bills take a tough loss to the Houston Texans.
04:16Meanwhile, how about the San Francisco 49ers, the most popular pick in the survivor pool
04:21genre this weekend?
04:22Guess what?
04:23If you took them, you lost.
04:24How did that happen?
04:25The Cardinals came all the way back to win 24 to 23.
04:28They were down 13 at one point in this game as well.
04:30Seven and a half point dogs in the NFL this season.
04:33Guess what they do?
04:34They not only cover, but they win outright.
04:36It happened twice again on Sunday.
04:39As Arizona got a late touchdown from Kyler Murray.
04:41They end up winning, kicking a field goal to win that game.
04:43Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers, they went on the road and beat the Los Angeles Rams
04:48in LA with plenty of Packers fans on hand, 24 to 19.
04:52And as I mentioned, the final game of a big upset Sunday happened yet again, giant seven
04:57and a half point dogs.
04:59They go to Seattle and win 29 to 20.
05:03How about that one?
05:04All right.
05:05Speaking of surprises, let's get through this quick.
05:07This was Saturday in case you missed it.
05:09AP poll is out.
05:10Alabama is not number one anymore.
05:11They lost to Vanderbilt over the weekend.
05:13Texas is number one, six of the top 11 teams lost outright.
05:18First time that's happened in a hundred years.
05:20Vanderbilt took down Alabama and they were a 22 and a half point favorite.
05:26So kind of a bizarre finish to say the least as the Crimson Tide did have a chance to win
05:32this one late, but they could not.
05:34And arguably the most disappointing loss in the Alabama era, whether it's Saban or guess
05:40who?
05:41Head coach Kalen DeBoer.
05:42Disappointed, frustrated.
05:43I mean, you name what it is, that's, that's what everyone is in the locker room right
05:47now.
05:48And you know, you prepare and you know, you prepared and it's, it's positive energy all
05:56week long.
05:57I really do think our guys prepared hard.
06:00You know, there's some things that we're going to look back on tomorrow and, you know, be
06:04really, really, really frustrated about, you know, like talking to what ifs and that's
06:08going to be the, that's going to be the situation we're going to be dealing with tomorrow.
06:11But you know, the guys in the locker room just talked about, you know, there is only
06:16one option.
06:17Let's move forward, let's get back to work.
06:18I think, I feel we've got a, we've got a great football team, but we're not at our best today.
06:24And you know, we're going to find out, you know, really how much we care about each other
06:29and what it looks like moving forward.
06:3112 team playoffs still gives Alabama a shot to get in.
06:35And meanwhile, how about Vanderbilt upset of the season in college football, congrats
06:39to head coach Clark Lee talked about what the wind means for the Commodores.
06:44Obviously got a great night for our program and you know, one that we've worked really
06:53hard to make happen.
06:55So I haven't been emotional to this very point.
06:58And of course, right when I get in front of you guys, I'm going to get emotional, but
07:00I think that the emotions are a testament to the level of care, the level of investment
07:12from so many people that are cheering for us.
07:16No matter what happens with Vanderbilt season, they'll always have that win.
07:19And so will Arkansas at home, throttling Tennessee 19 to 14, they were 14 and a half point favorite
07:26in the game.
07:27They lost outright as, as the sec is just upside down.
07:31Let's just be honest this year, Michigan loses to Washington.
07:35That was another big upset, 27 to 17 and Texas A&M beat Missouri.
07:41Missouri was ranked in the top 10.
07:43This game was not close.
07:45A&M won the game 41 to 10.
07:48Not close is the best way to describe the Phillies and Mets.
07:50They were going back and forth in this series.
07:52That game was insane.
07:53Yesterday, the Phillies end up walking off the Mets yesterday.
07:56They tied the NLDS up one a piece as it heads back to city field.
08:00A wild scene last night between the Padres and Dodgers as Dodgers fans let the Padres
08:05know they were not happy with the outcome.
08:08That series is now tied up at one a piece.
08:11Dodgers have been here before, sort of up against it as they head to Petco Park.
08:14If San Diego wins the next two at home and they've played well at home, the Dodgers would
08:19be out again.
08:20Meanwhile, the Yankees, they continue their series coming up.
08:23We're going to throw today before ALDS game number two, speaking of which, the Guardians
08:29are looking to take a 2-0 series lead this afternoon against the Detroit Tigers.
08:35One quick note from the WNBA, the New York Liberty have advanced to the WNBA Finals,
08:40and the Connecticut Sun have forced a deciding game five with the Lynx coming up tonight.
08:45We'll be right back with more Newsflyer.
08:49We got one more addition of Pat Evans from Legal Sports Report before he goes on vacation.
08:55We want to check in with Pat to get all the very latest.
08:58When he comes back, he's going to be locked into the polling in Missouri to see if they
09:02legalize sports betting in November.
09:04Pat, I'm guessing that's going to be a really busy time for you, so goodbye you getting
09:08ahead of this before you get out of town, before you're going to be locked into all
09:13those congressional meetings in November.
09:15Yeah, I figured let's get out of, you know, give myself a little break, let things kind
09:19of percolate a little bit more till we run right into the election.
09:22I mean, we're a month out now, but, you know, things really heat up with two weeks to go
09:26or so.
09:27And so I'll come back, write some what could change, not just in Missouri, because that's
09:30going to be something we talk about probably ad nauseum with you approaching it, but also
09:35just everywhere.
09:36I mean, Minnesota could change a lot of things if, you know, votes go certain ways, probably
09:41Georgia as well.
09:42So it'll be an interesting time.
09:44Yeah, no, it will.
09:45And you know, one of the topics that's really been, you know, picking up steam is the idea
09:49that some states want to tax more on sports betting because they're seeing some other
09:54states do it.
09:55So it's like one does it and the next and the next.
09:58And I'm reading about this over at Legal Sports Report, it looks like Colorado and they've
10:02had a very fluid tax situation there and done very well with sports betting.
10:07Is there a chance that we see a hike in the tax rate in that state on sports betting?
10:12So yeah, Colorado is a really interesting kind of case in this situation.
10:17Like you said, we've seen several states, Ohio, Illinois, hike their tax rates because
10:22they've seen states like New York, for example, come in hot with 51 percent.
10:27And so they're saying, well, wait, we can get a little bit more than we're getting now.
10:31But in Colorado, which to your point has been a very fluid sports betting market, we've
10:35seen lots of operators.
10:36It's fairly easy to get in there.
10:38A lot of operators come in place, you know, sports books we haven't seen in other markets
10:43have popped up in Colorado.
10:44But now we are also seeing sports books in Colorado say, well, maybe this wasn't so smart.
10:49We're going to get out now.
10:51So again, very fluid situation in Colorado in that sense.
10:53But what's interesting is voters went ahead and approved sports betting back in twenty
10:58nineteen.
10:59Now, in Colorado, there's a weird act that was passed some time ago.
11:03You know, I'm not an expert in Colorado amendments and whatnot.
11:06But some time ago that they put a ceiling on their tax, the amount of tax they can collect
11:13based on the legislative analysis and projections.
11:18So back in, you know, twenty nineteen, they said, well, hey, we think we can make about
11:22twenty nine million dollars a year in tax revenue.
11:26Well, you know, some things went and it was fine.
11:30They weren't making twenty nine million dollars in tax revenue.
11:33So it was all good.
11:35Well, then a couple of years ago they came back and they said, let's get rid of the ability
11:39for sports books to deduct their promotional spends, you know, all those bonuses that they
11:45give out and everything.
11:46Well, once they couldn't deduct those, the tax revenue jumped through the roof.
11:51And this year would be the first year that the tax revenue has gone over twenty nine
11:56million dollars.
11:58So the legislators earlier this year went ahead and put on the ballot and in a couple
12:03of weeks for the voters to say, hey, you can actually collect more tax revenue from
12:08sports betting than the original analysis.
12:12And if it passes, the state gets to keep it.
12:15And we know that in Colorado, the state funds a lot of water projects with the sports betting
12:22tax revenue.
12:23But if it doesn't pass, then they have to give that.
12:26I think it's about six hundred thousand dollars back to operators and casinos, because that's
12:31what the Constitution says now that gap is going to continue to grow.
12:36I think it was in two years it'll be up to two point five million dollars that they would
12:39have to refund.
12:41So it'll be interesting to watch to our intro point what's happening in Colorado here.
12:47Voters say, hey, this is great.
12:49Let's keep funding more water projects with our tax revenue from sports betting or, you
12:54know what, this is good.
12:55Give it back to the operators.
12:59All right, we'll end it there.
13:00OK, fair enough.
13:01Caught me off guard there, Pat.
13:02Sorry. All right.
13:04Let's get let's get to Bovada.
13:07Bovada is a company, for those of you who are unfamiliar, that was very popular in the
13:12gray market, black market in the United States prior to the legalization of sports betting.
13:17I have been one that's been pretty cynical about the idea that states would ask Bovada
13:22to leave and not operate in their state, because, again, if they're operating illegally and
13:26still doing it for years, why would they even listen?
13:30But I've been wrong, Pat.
13:31I've been wrong about this.
13:32Massachusetts is the next state that's asking Bovada to bail out of their state.
13:36And they seem to be complying with this, which to me is very surprising because they've
13:42taken so many risks being offshore all of these years.
13:45And I and I wonder how the risk has changed for them now.
13:49You know, that is an interesting question, because, yeah, what kind of power do these
13:53states have to actually say, well, you can't operate here and control what's going on
13:58where they're based? But yeah, sure enough.
13:59Massachusetts is the latest state to send a cease and desist letter to Bovada.
14:04And I guess to your I mean, this is something we've been talking about all summer is a
14:09lot of states, starting with my state of Michigan, has sent a cease and desist letter to
14:14Bovada saying, hey, you're not legal.
14:16Let's you got to stop.
14:19And there were a few notes in the letter from the attorney general in Massachusetts,
14:24including that it's in violation of multiple laws in Massachusetts, including saying
14:30they're based in the U.S.
14:31They're America's number one sports book.
14:34You know, they say they're misleading consumers in that sense.
14:38And sure enough, I mean, Bovada, for some reason, to your point, has been listening to
14:45these states and saying, no, we're out.
14:46They're up to I think it was before the Michigan cease and desist earlier this summer.
14:51They were restricted in about three markets, I think it was in the U.S.
14:55Now that's up to 14 markets.
14:57And that's I mean, to your point, they're shutting down and saying, OK, this isn't for
15:01us. So there certainly is something behind the weight of these regulators.
15:06And this is something that's been kind of snowballing the last couple of years.
15:10You know, we saw the American Gaming Association in 2022, say, ask the Department of
15:16Justice to help crack down on offshore sports books.
15:19They're also then last year we saw a group of regulators send a letter to the Department of
15:25Justice saying, let's crack down on this.
15:27We haven't yet seen the federal government really come into it like they have with some
15:31other industries in the past.
15:32But it certainly seems to be working at this point, at least for Bovada.
15:38You're seeing some action on other operators by states.
15:41You know, Michigan is kind of the lead here because Governor Whitmer gave earmarked quite
15:47a bit of money last year for the Michigan regulators to kind of combat offshore and
15:51illegal gaming. And so they've been really active.
15:54They sent another four or five cease and desist letters last week to operators that
16:00aren't licensed in the state saying, hey, you got to stop.
16:04And so far they've been listening to the Michigan regulators and kind of cascading to
16:10other operators.
16:11So it's, you know, something to to watch.
16:14But Massachusetts, just the latest and I would expect more to come.
16:18Yeah, I would agree.
16:19And finally, let's get to Canada, where legislation and push for that is increasing on
16:24monitoring and legalizing essentially the advertising and how much of it goes into sports
16:30betting. What is the update there?
16:32Yeah, so there's been quite a few hearings at a committee level in Canada on sports
16:37betting and kind of creating a nationwide framework to limit the scope of ads, where the
16:42ads could be placed.
16:43They want it to be very similar to the tobacco industry.
16:46And that's what we've kind of seen in several states down here in the U.S.
16:51as well. And a lot of the the testimonies were we don't really need this.
16:57You know, we're going to create our own internal codes.
17:00The ads aren't that much.
17:01You know, it seems like a huge amount because this is a new industry and it's come in
17:05and kind of been a quick blitz.
17:08But needless to say that the committee came back and said, hey, we're going to go
17:14clause by clause, didn't make any changes to the framework as it was sent it to the
17:18Senate floor. And that's something I'll be watching carefully when I come back from
17:22vacation, as well as what happens at the Senate floor in Canada, because, you know,
17:27Canada is a fairly significant market for some of these operators.
17:30And, you know, depends on what happens to the ad network or the ad spends.
17:35But it's so far sounds like the demand has been waning already.
17:38So it could be all for not really.
17:42Pat, we'll miss you. Enjoy your vacation.
17:44We'll catch up in a couple of weeks as we head toward Election Day.
17:47Thanks again for coming up.
17:48Thanks as always, Craig.
