00:44How are you doing? First of all, you okay? Yeah, heart rate is still recovering rich after Saturday. Yeah
00:52Get into the nuts and bolts of that very shortly, um
00:56So yeah, this is our I was gonna say weekly podcast
00:58There's probably not quite weeklies at Robbie, but we try me up as much as we can to discuss all things
01:02Pools, and of course you can now keep up to date in the print product every Thursday and online
01:08Every day as well seven days a week Robbie's across everything pools wise. Um, so yeah big game big game at the Vic on
01:15Saturday then Robbie and it felt like a big one as well
01:17Didn't it going into it giving the pressure on?
01:19Darren Sal given the pressure on the players the squad especially after the recent home sort of performances and
01:25results and
01:27Didn't get off to the best of stats, but it had quite a dramatic end. What was your overall take on the game and
01:33We'll kind of get into the halftime
01:36Situation and some of the subs made and what Darren Sal was saying after the game as well a little bit later on
01:41But yeah, just just sort of first of all, what was your overall impressions of the game and how?
01:44How pools managed to come back from tunnel down? Yeah. I mean it was it was a remarkable game rich
01:49It was one of the most remarkable games I've seen in a in a long time
01:53I felt like a fan again up in the press box to be honest. It was it was incredible
01:58I asked song in the week if it was a game they had to win
02:02He said no, but I think a lot of fans would have said otherwise there was big pressure on the manager
02:08There still is big pressure on the manager because it was such a topsy-turvy
02:12Game and pools went to kneel down and fans really voiced their displeasure
02:18After that, I think Sal got his team selection
02:21Entirely wrong in truth. He stuck with the same team bar one, which was SES Davies in for the suspended parks
02:26but in attacking errors, he stuck with the same side that started the
02:31The previous weekend's narrow defeat to Forest Green and that meant that he named an 11 without a single league goal between them this season
02:38For the second week in a row and for a side that hadn't scored in six hours of home football
02:44That seemed like a crazy thing to do and to be honest Richard almost felt like pools were a goal down
02:49before kickoff because I think fans were fans who were already frustrated were
02:55Really not pleased with the with the team selection and there was pressure on the players
03:00There was pressure on the manager and pools made the worst possible start going behind after six minutes and conceded
03:08Again, and it was pretty telling that when Manny Disarray came out to warm up Manny Disarray who scored 23 league goals last season
03:15But was left on the bench for the second week running that that that was that elicited the biggest cheer of the first half
03:23So his credit, although I think he got the 11 all sorts of wrong
03:28He he didn't take too long before he he changed things Joe Gray came on for after 25 minutes
03:34He changed the shape they had started with a sort of 4-4-2 diamond without any natural width, but Gray came on to replace
03:40Darren Robinson who had been booked and then Disarray came on for Gary Medin before the break albeit Medin had been
03:47Limping for for 10 minutes prior. So that was probably as much an enforced change as it was a
03:52Tactical master stroke and I think all eyes were on Manny Disarray. How would he respond?
03:58He could unless a man might might have spent the next hour sort of sulking and trudging around
04:03But you could see from the minute of his introduction
04:06He had the bit between his teeth and it it lifted the fans and Poole scored
04:11Just 10 minutes into the the second half Luke Chalmers his first Poole's goal
04:14he was really impressive as well on Saturday and it gave the place a
04:19Lift and we've all been there as spectators of football as football fans
04:24sometimes you just feel it in the air and and it felt pretty much from that point as though
04:29Pools were gonna go on and if not draw the game then then win the game and they they got the noses in front and
04:34They allowed Sutton back in late on
04:37They scored I think with seven minutes from time off the pools fell asleep
04:41From a corner, but Manny Disarray that man Manny Disarray completed his hat-trick
04:45late on and a hugely popular goal scorer first pool substitute ever in their
04:50116 year history to come off the bench and and score a hat-trick
04:54I think questions still have to be asked over the manager given the the team that he
05:00Initially started but I think it's safe to say we won't see Manny Disarray on the bench again anytime soon
05:06So a much-needed three points for pools
05:09Yeah, I was gonna ask about the next sort of team selection. Do you do you think I mean
05:14There's no way he cannot start Manny D. Is there the next time the play so grey as well
05:20Do you think a few of those players will come back in?
05:22How do you think Darren Saul who you know, we'll get to his comments shortly in terms of personal abuse
05:28He was claiming to have received during the game
05:31And you know kind of the impact is that but what in terms of tactics and team selection?
05:37Do you do envisage quite a few changes next time around?
05:41Without a doubt rich. I mean he has to he has to start Manny Disarray
05:45He has to start Joe Grey and for me has to start Anthony Mancini as well
05:50I think the 11 that began the second half on Saturday is an 11 that pools fans would be really happy to see
05:57start
05:58Moving forward and that had Nicky Featherstone and Nathan Sharon at the base of midfield
06:03Salas tended to go with three defensive midfielders
06:06I think Sharon who works so hard almost does the work of two men
06:12And I think given the the creative players that pools have at their disposal
06:15It seems like a real waste play three defensive minded midfielders
06:19I think you can get away with two given Sharon's industry and tenacity and Featherstone gives you something even now at
06:2536 that no other pools midfielder can do it
06:29He's the one in that midfield who is going to get the ball down
06:32Add a little bit of control composure and get pools ticking over and by doing that
06:36He's able to get those attacking players involved in the game
06:40More often Mancini came on and played in his preferred position in in the ten
06:44And he was absolutely sensational in the second half
06:47Ran the show Luke Charman had a really good game as I said scored his opening goal
06:51I like him more on the left than I do through the middle
06:54That's why he played in the second half gray out on the right flank has been his sides
06:58Best attacking outlet if not best player this season he has to be in the team every week
07:04No question about it and many disarray there
07:07There are not many people up and down the land that would leave a player like many disarray on the bench
07:12Okay, he's had a bit of a difficult beginning to the season trying to adapt to Sal's style trying to do things slightly differently
07:18But on Saturday not only his quality as a player
07:22But his character was there for all to see because he responded really impressively
07:27He had a point to prove and my goodness didn't he prove it?
07:30So in terms of a front four, I think Charman gray Mancini and disarray all have to play for me
07:35It's um, obviously there's been a lot of talk
07:39And a lot of pressure and scrutiny on the manager in the last couple of weeks. I think Paul's fans
07:43I think it's probably fair to say if it got beat on Saturday. There'll be a large chunk expecting the manager potentially loses job
07:50But they got the win in
07:52Very dramatic circumstances. How do you how do you kind of see that scenario at the minute?
07:57And also the influence of kind of learning Lawrence and you know coming down on the bench
08:01Does that in any way undermine the manager?
08:03I know he's spoken quite publicly about it in terms of being in favor of him and the
08:09You know the experience that you can bring and the influence and I think he's quite popular with the players as well
08:13Isn't he learning?
08:14But yeah, I mean, you know, it's an interesting look isn't it an unusual one to have?
08:18To have that happen. Yeah, it's it's really unusual rich. I think you're right in saying that Lenny is
08:25Very popular. He's a great character. Actually, you know, he's funny. He's quick-witted and obviously his experience
08:32Speaks for itself. I spoke to some two or three weeks ago about
08:37Lenny Lawrence and the fact that he has been coming into the dugout at halftime
08:41I asked him after the first time Lenny Lawrence made an an appearance and
08:46You know
08:46I suppose you can only take silent face value in terms of what he says
08:50he says he's been keen all season to learn Lenny Lawrence down to the dugout because he
08:56Relishes his experience. He's keen to learn from him
08:59So I had a similar relationship with with the late Glen Roda when he was manager of Stevenage
09:04So was was he took charge?
09:06it was his first managerial job and he struggled a little bit initially and then Stevenage bought in Glen Roda who'd been working as an
09:13Advisor and was like a mentor to song and they formed an incredibly close
09:17Personal relationship. So it's certainly not something that song is afraid of he's not so headstrong that he's unwilling to take advice
09:26So he's unwilling to to learn from from, you know, these great characters of the game who have incredible experience
09:32Behind them. I have to say that that from the outside and looking in it does seem a little bit
09:40Unusual certainly and I think it's probably the timing of it as well the fact that Lenny hasn't been
09:47Starting games in the dugout. He tends to be coming in at halftime
09:50When things aren't going well, so it's hard to it's hard to feel like
09:55It's not a little bit strange and that you know, it's almost as though Saul who is under pressure even despite the win on Saturday
10:03He's clearly still under pressure
10:05It feels a little bit like when a school teacher has an Ofsted inspector come in or something to sit at the back of the
10:10Class and check up on what they're doing. It's hard not to feel that there is a little bit something like that
10:16To it, but you know, so so says that he's he's happy enough with with that
10:21Well more than happy with it
10:23So I suppose we have to take him at his word, but just to sort of answer the first part of your question
10:29I think the manager has been under under plenty of pressure
10:33I think pretty much every fan would say that with the squad
10:37Saul has at his disposal and by the way, Saul deserves credit for that because he's along with Joe Monks
10:42He has worked hard to recruit the squad that they've got but Paul should be doing much better
10:48Especially I think you look at the first ten games that they had a pretty
10:52Favorable run the fixture computer was pretty kind to them played all four newly promoted sides in those first ten games
10:57they've struggled for results, but I think especially they've struggled to string a
11:02Performance together Saturday was one of the two or three occasions really
11:07I think the second half at Boston and the first 20 minutes at awoking when we saw Paul's
11:11play with any sort of freedom that the shackles were off if you like and we saw that that the
11:16multitude of attacking talent that Saul has
11:19it was pretty much the first time we saw them given that freedom to go and play and express themselves and the
11:24Results were there for for all to see up. There is a little bit of a divide
11:28Maybe we'll speak about that in more detail in a minute between
11:31The manager and the supporters and I think Saul has a long way to go before he's going to fully win the supporters
11:36Over but of course winning football matches is a surefire way to do that
11:40It certainly is. And yeah, Paul's fans obviously wait a while at home. And yeah, so after the game, excuse me
11:46Darren Saul spoke about the
11:48Personal abuse that he was receiving. I think especially during the sort of halftime second half
11:53prior to the comeback from some of the fans presumably behind him in the stand and
11:59What's your sort of take on that first of all and he was he was quite open about it
12:04It was a was he almost a little bit dejected after a 4-3 win, which is unusual obviously
12:09But the context behind it is kind of some of the you know criticism he's been getting recently
12:14What was your take on the abuse that Saul was getting?
12:17Well, he certainly was a bit dejected to be honest Rich
12:20I mean it was only the second game this season that Pools have scored at home
12:24I think they failed to score in four or five home matches and the other one was Manny Disirue's 98th minute equalizer at
12:31Weldstone and when that went in Saul was was shot off down the touchline like a rocket. He was really vocal in his
12:39Celebrations, but all of the goals on Saturday bearing in mind it they were goals in remarkable circumstances as well
12:44It was it was an incredible game and a superb comeback. He was incredibly muted. He barely moved a
12:50Muscle so we sort of got the sense that there was something amiss and he has taken a lot of stick
12:55I I think the week prior they lost 3-0 to Rochdale in midweek
13:00Song is big on the fact that win lose or draw. He will always thank the fans at the at full time
13:07He got a lot of stick after that midweek game to to Rochdale
13:12Inside and outside of the ground though. There was a
13:15Some crosswords exchanged it would not be unfair to say and Saturday was very similar
13:19I think again as I said, he was on the back foot because of the team
13:23He named but he was probably on the back foot already because as you said pools hadn't won at home all season
13:29They were languishing in in 18th with a squad that should be doing
13:33Far better and of course, they made a pretty nightmarish start their worst chance
13:39Suggesting that the supporters wanted started to be sacked
13:42Obviously he he and the players the players in particular turned it round in the second half and the atmosphere actually
13:50Was great, but but saw was very
13:53muted
13:54Post-match and as you said, he brought to light the fact that he feels he's been receiving what he termed as personal personal abuse
14:01Sorry, he said in his 20 years in management never received that level of personal abuse
14:07In a game the reaction on social media afterwards was really interesting rich
14:12I put I put a tweet out sort of outlining the issue and
14:15The response I had was really really strong. One of the strongest reactions I've had in my seven months here at the Hartlepool Mail
14:23It's a difficult one. I think sometimes people think I'm too soft on
14:28Song I would say that what I know of song as a man
14:31I really like he's strong-willed and a strong character
14:35but he's he's like well, he always takes time before and after
14:40Interviews to check how we're doing what we've been up to and so on and so forth. We share a story
14:45We stare we share a joke. He always does his best to answer my questions thoughtfully
14:50And thoroughly so I don't have really a bad word to say about him as an individual
14:55I think on the football pitch there are far more questions to be asked. I think the style of play has been
15:02Uninspirational to say the least and results haven't been
15:05What they should be it's a difficult one on the personal abuse rich
15:08So says yes, it does happen a lot of supporters who were behind the goal say no
15:13It doesn't perhaps says just a blurring of the lines
15:16there
15:18Obviously, it's it's sort of what is personal abuse and what is criticism? I think fans are well within their right to be
15:26Frustrated but I do sympathize with saw when he said he's not a millionaire from Hartlepool United
15:32He's living a long way away from home. Bear in mind. His family is still down south. He's got two young
15:38Children, he's driving a lot of miles. He's doing his absolute best. So I certainly have a lot of sympathy
15:45With him from what I've heard around me
15:48I think there's been a mix of genuine criticism and personal abuse
15:53Of course a football ground is one of the most emotional places in the country
15:58perhaps more so in the Northeast than than anywhere else, but
16:03I think it's um
16:05It's it's a difficult question to answer. I would say that if I was to stick my neck out, I would say yes
16:11I think style has been on the wrong end of some personal abuse and I think that it's gone too far on the other
16:16hand, I would say that
16:17Criticism some of it is certainly warranted fans pay good money
16:21bear in mind the supporters are paying more for their season tickets this season than they have done in
16:25Previous years and they're well within their rights to have their say but it's important that a balance is struck. I think rich. Yeah
16:32Yeah, definitely. I would I think the issue he has as well as that
16:37Despite the win on Saturday despite Manny D's performance
16:41he's only ever really
16:43you know his name and his team away from criticism or a bad start away from criticism or
16:49About another result another defeat away from criticism
16:52So yeah
16:53I'd be interested to see how it sort of pans out over the next few weeks if they can somehow string together it whenever runs
16:57And obviously that's probably the only way it's gonna turn around any of the supporters
17:00But I would suggest it's probably a large chunk that they probably won't be able to turn around now
17:05But but we'll see we'll see and break from the league now
17:09Bracketown isn't it? I think Saturday. Yes. Yeah glamorous Bracketown and the FA Cup fourth qualifying round
17:16And then it's Maidenhead United away. I think isn't the following Saturday and back in National League action
17:21Um, so yeah a little break. I'm still obviously we spoke about the team
17:25You would imagine he would still play his strongest team in Bracketown
17:28Revenue is gonna be significant for pools if they make it through to the rounds proper rounds of the competition
17:35Yeah, without a doubt
17:36I mean, I think it's about ten thousand pounds you get just for winning this fourth qualifying round tie
17:40And then obviously as you say when you get into the first round proper
17:45as you like and if you can hopefully progress through the competition then then it can be massive in terms of
17:50Finances pools fans, of course will remember that memorable fourth round trip to Premier League Crystal Palace
17:56Which not only was a big financial boon for the club. It was a fantastic day out
18:01I went to the game with my dad and it was absolutely
18:04Sensational pools gave a really good account of themselves and the atmosphere was beyond belief
18:09I'm not sure. It's a necessarily a great time to be playing an FA Cup tie if I'm honest rich from a pool's perspective
18:14I think you would probably rather carry that momentum that they've started
18:19To pick up into the league and it's one of those when you play in lower league opposition or National League North opposition
18:25So one division down from pools. It's almost like a lose-lose, isn't it fans?
18:30Expect you to win. So if you do win, it's nothing special
18:33But of course if you lose it's the end of the world pools pools lost to National League North opposition in Chester
18:39last year at this stage and that was bitterly disappointing and I think people at the time saw that as a reflection of a
18:45Regime that was really under pressure
18:48Brackley have had a sort of indifferent start to the season, but they do tend to do well in the National League North
18:54I think they've been in the playoffs
18:56In each of the last three or four seasons. They were beaten player finalists last season as well
19:02So certainly it does have the feeling of a potential banana skin, but pool should have more than enough
19:08I think if there was to be a positive it might be another game where Sal can not experiment with his side
19:15but he can feel that second half 11 with the sort of four attacking players and two defensive midfielders rather than
19:22the three defensive midfielders
19:24Without necessarily quite as much weight on his shoulders
19:27He has previously been reluctant even when we've seen pool show signs of how they how good they can be as an attacking force
19:35For instance when they won in midweek at Boston last month
19:39He then sort of reverted back to tight on the Saturday
19:41Hopefully the freedom the potential freedom that the FA Cup gives him he might he might stick with the side that impressed
19:48In the second half song that's a pretty decent history in the FA Cup we were speaking to him about it on Saturday
19:54I think he's reached the third round on three separate occasions. He took woking to play
19:59Reading who at the time were managed by Yap Stam
20:02In previous roles when he's been working in with youth teams and academies. He's got a pretty good Cup record as well
20:08He took Watford to the FA Youth Cup
20:10Semi-final they played at Anfield
20:12So let's hope for another good Cup run for pools because it brings that feel-good factor back to the Northeast to feel good factor
20:18That has been desperately missing in in recent weeks
20:21And of course for a club like who's that the financial benefits can be massive. Yeah, indeed
20:27Yeah
20:27So for the result on Saturday and just want to turn a few of the sort of smaller topics before we
20:32Draw this bots pod to a close. Um, just first you just in terms of the league table itself obviously feels 15th after
20:38Think 13 games now four wins. Yeah
20:41defeats and
20:42Usually the league table settles down after about 10 games or so
20:45So you've probably got a pretty good picture of where pools are currently at. I think given the players and the squad most
20:51People including Sal I'm sure but certainly the fans would deem that this team is, you know underperforming quite significantly. How do you assess?
20:59The 13 teams that you've seen so far in terms of the standard this season
21:03I'm see Barnett flying high at the top but a lot of the big hitters have left the league
21:07So is this going to be a potential missed opportunity for a successful season given the start of the pad?
21:12Or do you think there's still time for for the team to turn it around this campaign?
21:16Well, I think there's still time rich. I think we're only about a quarter of the way
21:21Through the season, but but I do think that some fairly significant changes
21:26Need to be made. I don't think that pools can continue with this
21:30Style of play. I understand that that Sal is a pragmatist that he has built his career on being
21:38Direct in terms of how he plays but the technical quality that pools have in their side
21:43I think there has to be
21:45More of a balance because we've seen players like Adam Campbell who won promotion to League One
21:49With crawling last season started in the player final at Wembley. He's been non-existent really since arriving at pools, but that
21:57As much the fault of the style as it is the fault of the player
22:00But there's he's a diminutive attacking player whose best assets are his speed and his technical skill
22:06But he spends most of the time probably getting a sore neck because the ball is going over his head back and forth
22:11So the style has got to change. I think if pools are serious about
22:16Competing towards the top end. I think you're quite right when you say that this squad should be good enough
22:21We said in the press box when you looked at pools how they performed in the second half that front four
22:26Especially I think that that is a top seven front four at this level
22:31Without a doubt you alluded to the fact that some of the big hitters have left the league. It's a wide-open
22:38Really competitive league. I think Forrest Green who pools took on
22:43Last Saturday and actually gave a reasonably good account of themselves. I think they're probably going to be
22:49up there
22:50Certainly given the sort of pedigree and experience
22:54They've got within their squad Barnett as you say absolutely flying at the moment Dean Brennan's done a fantastic job there
22:59I think turned down the Swindon job in the summer, which just goes to show how serious about the project he is
23:06They Gateshead other than their their huge blip with a 7-1 defeat had been flying
23:11But of course, they've lost manager Rob Elliott pools legend Tony Sweeney as well first-team coach. He's followed him to take over at
23:18Cruelly, so it's difficult to tell how they're gonna respond to that easily
23:23I've had a really strong start to the season just started to falter ever so slightly
23:27But I think I've said this to you before it it's a wide open league
23:31And I think there is the potential that pools will feel like it's a missed opportunity if they're not able to get themselves
23:37Together and start pushing themselves up the table
23:41But I think there is still a degree of faith that pools can
23:47Turn things around but a lot is gonna depend on team selection and tactics if they're gonna be able to do so
23:52Yeah
23:53And he'd referenced in a week a week or so prior that
23:56He was gonna go back to the tactics at the start of the season
23:59But didn't he and then that sort of started play and then obviously at the weekend second half
24:03They start actually playing football on the deck and the score a few goals. So yeah. Yeah interesting few weeks ahead
24:07We'll see how
24:08See how Saturday goes and yeah two of the other points was gonna touch him on with one was actually Anthony Sweeney and just
24:15He's doing well since leaving pools, which is great to see United legend really good guy as well
24:20and he's obviously headed off to Crawley like you say after a
24:23Short but successful stint at Gateshead with Rob Elliott. So we wish him we wish him well
24:28And I think did you speak to Campbell as well? I think didn't he last week about yes
24:31Yes, we need to move to to Crawley obviously his former club. So yeah, we wish him well and just fine
24:37It's just gonna go keep keep the situation really what your assessment of Brad young has been so far a couple of games in and
24:42And do you think he'll be given, you know, kind of what we said a couple of keepers already three, I think
24:49Right variety of issues, but do you think he'll be given the chance to establish himself as number one at pools now?
24:55Yeah, we're just on a Sweeney. I would just echo what you said
25:00Fantastic man fantastic coach as well. I know some pool supporters
25:05Sort of questioned him as a coach, especially in in recent years
25:09But but I think that you have to look at some of the squads that he's had to work with
25:15and I think you have to bear in mind the fact that the managers are the ones that have
25:19recruited
25:20The players and I think anyone that you speak to
25:24Within Hartlepool United pretty much any player that's been through the door in the last decade or so would tell you how good of a coach
25:31Tony Sweeney is I remember on my first day pretty much at the Hartlepool man
25:35I was uh, I was nervously walking into
25:39Maidencastle and Durham where pools train trying to hide behind the pillars and things waiting for the
25:44Press conference and as soon as Sweeney saw me he jumped up to his feet. He came over
25:48He gave me a big hug. He introduced me to all the other
25:51Staff and that really stuck with me and that was just a sign of the man that he is and not only is he a
25:56Great man, he's obviously had a fantastic playing career and I think he's going to continue to have a really impressive
26:01Coaching career delighted to see him
26:04Get a good move and he's really progressed since since leaving pools, which I'm not surprised at at all
26:10I think cruelly is a difficult job for
26:12Robelia and and and Sweeney's I think they've obviously massively overperformed it in in recent years
26:18It's going to be I think a massive task to keep them in league one in truth
26:22But if anyone can do it, then I think that they can so delighted for Sweeney and on the goalkeepers
26:27I know it's it's incredible rich. I think they spent all summer with a
26:30One goalkeeper on their books
26:32It's hard to believe that they've already used three
26:34So far this season Dixon who struggled last season actually had a pretty good start to the campaign and then has been ruled out with a long
26:40term
26:41Injury, Adam Smith had a had a handful of games. It actually did pretty well to be honest
26:47He lost his place after shipping three at Rochdale, but there wasn't really a lot
26:51He could have done he was he was sort of steady as she goes to be honest rich
26:55No complaints with with Smith, but I think young when he was signed that I think there must have been a an idea
27:02He was gonna be that the number one for the majority of the season. I spoke to him in the week
27:09He's a fantastic young man. He's really mature. He's really impressive physically. He looks great
27:15He's a giant of a man. I don't think he had his best game on on Saturday if I'm honest rich
27:20He obviously came into the team a couple of weeks ago against Forrest Green and I think was probably the outstanding
27:26Performer for pools an excellent save late on so a really good start
27:30I think he'll be disappointed to have conceded three goals
27:33It goes without saying on his on his home debut, of course, he's a he's a Hartlepool lad as well
27:37So it means that much more to him. I think the first goal
27:41He made a bit of a questionable decision to punch the cross
27:44it was actually a decent punch, but it went straight to a Sutton player and Sutton recycled the ball and
27:49Scored it wasn't a glaring error
27:51But I'm not a hundred percent sure whether maybe he might be slightly disappointed with that the other two goals
27:56I don't think he could have done anything anything to be honest. He wasn't given much help by his
28:01defense a couple of

28:30Education at Leicester and now he's here to get his pretty much his first taste of senior football
28:35So I think it's it's worth being patient with him given the fact that he's a he's a local lad
28:40I think supporters will be more inclined to to be patient, but I I see a really bright future for for Brad young
28:46I think he's gonna go on and be a really top goalkeeper and I think he's gonna play at a much higher level than
28:51Than he currently is. So hopefully he's gonna have a really good season for the pools
28:54He's got a good solid back four in front of him, which will will certainly help and yeah big things to come
