A woman who ditched her corporate career has shared her 'rules' to become a stay-at-home girlfriend - including staying in your best shape, learning to cook and never dating someone for their potential.

Emily de Rean, 37, hadn’t always aspired to be a stay-at-home girlfriend but decided to quit her corporate job as a financial analyst, after her dad passed away from cancer and she realised life was too short 'to be unhappy'.

After finding love with her fiancé, Michael, 40, a business owner, he supported her decision to stop working to pursue her other passions - including writing a book, cooking and social media.

Now she hopes to become an author and can spend her time writing a book and socialising with friends - rather than being structured or 'restricted' by a job.

Emily has shared her tips for young women if they aspire to become a 'stay-at-home girlfriend' and 'create their dream life' - which include dating someone a few years older and someone open minded.

00:00So I've never dated guys that were like financially struggling because it's just not my lifestyle.
00:07I think life's too short really.
00:16Hi there, my name is Emily. I live in Dallas, Texas and for the past two and a half years
00:21I have been a stay-at-home girlfriend and now I've been a stay-at-home fiancé.
00:31We got to know each other within, you know, probably the first six months. He is an entrepreneur
00:35himself. He's a business owner and he said, you know, you have a lot of good ideas, a lot of
00:40things you want to do. So he said, I'm very serious about you and if you're open to it, he's like,
00:44let's just have you not work so you can devote your time to something more productive. That's
00:50the word that he used, something more productive. I've never dated guys that were like financially
00:58struggling because it's just not my lifestyle. You know, if on the first date he doesn't offer
01:11to pick you up, it's the fact that he didn't offer. These are tell-tale signs, you know,
01:15the way that the man acts. You go out to dinner, check comes and, you know, he sends you a Venmo
01:20or a request for money or says, oh, hi, gets the bill and it's like, oh, how do you want to do this?
01:25That's a no-go. People think that, you know, to become a stay-at-home girlfriend you have to be
01:40with a multimillionaire and that is far, far from the truth. You know, there's nothing wrong with a
01:45man who wants to be, let's say, a high school teacher, but if you're a woman whose, you know,
01:50ultimate goal is to be a stay-at-home girlfriend or a stay-at-home wife, somebody who's a teacher
01:56is never going to be able to afford that, you know? Of course, you date and marry for love,
02:01but it's normal to have requirements because men have requirements as to what we look like.
02:06I got a lot of negative comments. He's going to leave you, you're going to be homeless,
02:16you're lazy, you're a leech, you're not very smart. Like some people are robots,
02:22they've been conditioned to think a certain way and they refuse to think outside the box
02:26because I don't look down on women that want to be in 50-50 relationships. I don't look down
02:32on girls that want to work 60 hours a week. Some actually like it. I'm just talking to
02:36girls and telling them, hey, there's other options. It's never too late to create your
02:41dream life and live for yourself and don't live for the expectations of others. I really think
02:47we are the master of our own destiny. If I could do it, so can you.
