00:30The zombie-inspired apocalypse film sees its protagonist Jim awake from a coma,
00:34only to find that his family has chosen death over the threat of an infection they saw as inevitable.

01:37but its opening scene makes it clear that it can also pack an emotional gut punch.
01:41Following a disappointing audition, actress Amanda Cartwright joins her daughter Max in the car
01:46as they attempt to lift both their spirits with Kim Kahn's Bette Davis eyes.

03:48Audiences in 1986 likely expected The Fly's grotesque body horror,
03:53but were in for a surprise when lead actor Jeff Goldblum began this emotional monologue.

04:07Confronted by his girlfriend, Ronnie,
04:09Seth expresses his desire to be the first insect politician.
04:13"...Compassion. No compromise. We can't trust the insect.
04:23I'd like to become the first insect politician."
04:28It's an imagined position that he believes would set himself apart from the other insects,
04:32who he describes as brutal beings without compassion or compromise.
04:36It may seem silly without context,
04:38but this pivotal dialogue serves as one of the last gasps of humanity left
04:42in the character's rapidly changing body.

04:48By the time Ronnie sees him again, he'll be too far gone to save.
05:086. The Ending – Jacob's Ladder
05:10War is already a harrowing topic to put on film.
05:13Add some psychological horror into the mix,
05:15and you have the equally shocking and emotionally affecting film,
05:19Jacob's Ladder.
05:20"...It's been a long time."
05:22"...Are you alright?"
05:25"...Yeah, I'm okay."
05:27"...Do you want some help? I can call upstairs."
05:30There are clues laid throughout the movie that our protagonist, Jacob,
05:33is actually dead or dying,
05:35but you don't get confirmation of this fact until the film's last act,
05:38when Jacob finds himself back at home.
05:40His son Gabe, who died in a car accident years prior,
05:43is sitting on the steps,
05:44and embraces him before leading them both into a bright white light.
05:48"...Gabe?"
05:50"...Hi, Dad."
05:535. Sokwu is Bitten – Train to Busan
06:03The touching scene is immediately followed by a glimpse at Jacob's grim reality,
06:08laying in a tent surrounded by military doctors.
06:11He is declared dead.
06:15"...He's gone."
06:175. Sokwu is Bitten – Train to Busan
06:20This Korean horror film takes the threat of zombies to the next level
06:23by setting itself in an enclosed space.
06:31Sokwu and his young daughter, Su-An,
06:33are among the passengers on the ill-fated train
06:36and fight to survive throughout the film's runtime.
06:38Almost two hours into the movie,
06:40it appears as if they might make it out alive,
06:42and then they are approached by a slowly deteriorating Yeon-Seok.
06:51This businessman desperately pleads for help
06:55before attacking the protagonist.
07:08Sokwu manages to fight off his attacker,
07:10but he is bitten in the process
07:12and realises he must leave his daughter with the only other survivor.
07:16He reminisces about the day Su-An was born
07:18before letting himself fall off the train.
07:42Sacrificing himself for his only child.
07:444. Charlie's Death – Hereditary
07:47"...I think my throat's getting bigger."
07:49When Peter's younger sister, Charlie, begins to have an allergic reaction,
07:52he does what any good brother would do
07:54and rushes her out to his car,
07:56speeding down the road towards a hospital.
08:02"...It's okay, Charlie, we're almost at the hospital, okay?"
08:04Unfortunately, she died before they could reach their destination,
08:07not because of her allergies,
08:08but because Peter's swerving to avoid a deer
08:10causes a fatal impact.
08:15Shaken by the brutality of her death,
08:16Peter simply returns home
08:18and lies awake until his mother's anguished cries
08:21confirm what he already knew to be true.
08:23"...I just want to die!
08:28No!
08:32Oh, God!
08:35Oh, God!
08:36Peter, do it!
08:38I just..."
08:39The screams echoing throughout the Graham household
08:41are equally haunting and devastating,
08:43perfectly illustrating the enormity of the family's sudden loss.
08:47It's a grief that hangs over the rest of the film,
08:49colouring every interaction.
08:52Number 3.
08:53I Have Always Loved You.
08:54A Quiet Place
08:58Regardless of whether or not you agree with every decision
09:00made by the family at the centre of A Quiet Place,
09:02you have to agree that the adult's love for their children is unmatched.
09:06This is never more true than in the film's last act,
09:09when Lee sees two of his kids trapped inside of a truck
09:12by a death angel.
09:22No!
09:25Knowing that the creatures attack whatever is making the loudest noise,
09:28he realises what he must do.
09:34After signing,
09:35I love you,
09:36I have always loved you,
09:37he lets out a scream that ensures his own death.
09:41AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
09:51But allows his children a chance at safety.
09:53We don't see his death on screen,
09:55but the pained expression of his daughter Regan says it all.
10:08Number 2.
10:09ending, The Mist.
10:15Hindsight is 20-20. That's the lesson of this soul-crushing ending to a Stephen King
10:20horror. Discovering that his home has been destroyed and his car has run out of gas,
10:24David decides, with his fellow adult survivors, that death would be better than facing the
10:28monsters of The Mist.
10:30Well, we gave it a good shot. Nobody can say we didn't.
10:40Nope. Nobody can say that.
10:43He takes on the role of killer, shooting his young son and all of the people they met over
10:47the course of the movie. He's meant to take his own life next, but as he exits his vehicle,
10:51he sees tanks driving out of The Mist towards him.
11:00Help had been minutes away. The film's final moments are positively gut-wrenching as David
11:16falls to his knees and cries out with grief and regret.

11:591. She Saw You Dance – The Sixth Sense

12:04Even if you haven't seen The Sixth Sense, you probably know the scene in which a young boy
12:08named Cole tells Malcolm that he sees dead people.
12:12I see dead people.
12:14One of these dead people is his own grandmother, who he delivers a message for in the film's
12:18most touching scene.
12:20She says she's sorry for taking the bumblebee pendant. She just likes it a lot.
12:24From beyond the grave, the older woman recalls an argument she had with her daughter before
12:28one of her childhood dance recitals.
12:30She wanted me to tell you she saw you dance.
12:34She said when you were little, you and her had a fight right before your dance recital.
12:46Cole's mother, Lynn, had always assumed her mum didn't attend, but he reassures her that
12:50she saw her dance.
12:52You thought she didn't come to see you dance?
13:00She did.
13:01The scene was so moving that it earned actress Toni Collette an Oscar nomination.
13:05Bruce Willis also gives it his all as Malcolm, who realises the truth about his own death
13:09at the film's end.
