01:45 and that's where the bear comes in.
01:47 The animal attacks a scientist named Cassie,
01:50 and the two become merged,
01:51 with the bear displaying a human skull and Cassie's voice.
01:55 It's an unbelievable achievement in visual effects and sound design,
02:10 and millions have re-watched the scene to enjoy its many terrifying details.

03:22 about an ex-priest who finds crop circles on his Pennsylvania farm.
03:26 He lives with his younger brother Merrill,
03:28 who in one scene watches a news report about a potential alien sighting.
03:32 The station plays home video footage from a birthday party in Brazil,
03:36 which shows a large green figure emerging from some bushes.
03:40 "It's behind!"
03:40 The alien is only on screen for a fraction of a second,
03:50 which lends a sense of confusion and unease to the scene.
03:54 Perfect for obsessive re-watching.
03:56 Number 26.
03:58 3D TV.
03:59 The Ring.
04:06 The early 2000s was a great time for horror,
04:09 with The Ring being one of its many classics.
04:11 Many of its scenes have become ingrained in the public consciousness,
04:15 including the iconic sequence in which Samara emerges from the TV to attack Noah.
04:20 This scene was everywhere at the time,
04:22 and has been endlessly referenced in parody throughout pop culture.
04:26 Even if you haven't seen The Ring,
04:28 you still know about the scene and how it plays out.
04:30 And if you have seen The Ring,
04:32 you have undoubtedly watched the scene again and again to soak up its brilliance.

04:47 That's Not Norris.
04:48 The Thing.
04:48 John Carpenter's chilly masterpiece is often heralded for its visual effects,
04:58 and those are on full display in this iconic sequence.
05:02 Norris seemingly has a heart attack,
05:03 prompting Dr. Copper to intervene.
05:06 But when he attempts to use the defibrillator,
05:08 Norris's stomach turns into a giant mouth and all hell breaks loose.
05:12 There's a ton of great stuff packed into the scene,
05:15 all of which is goopy and disgusting.
05:17 For the squeamish, watching the scene is a one-and-done deal.
05:21 But for many horror fans,
05:23 savoring every gooey morsel of Rob Bottin's beautiful effects work is a recurring pleasure.
05:29 Though we'll spare you it in its entirety in case you're one of the former.

05:39 Cracking the Whip.
05:40 Ghost Ship.
05:41 For the most part, Ghost Ship is a forgettable affair.
05:51 But it contains a killer opening that some consider one of the best in horror.
05:56 It takes place aboard an ocean liner in the early 1960s,
05:59 with a large group of well-dressed people dancing on a stage.
06:02 An unseen killer then manipulates a wire cord,
06:05 causing it to whip through the group at an incredible speed.
06:09 What results is absolute carnage.
06:11 And let's just say it's definitely not for the faint of heart.
06:15 It's an inventive sequence that starts the film off right,
06:18 and it's probably the only scene from the film that people have sought out or remembered.
06:22 Number 23.
06:30 Monstrous Dream.
06:31 Rosemary's Baby.
06:32 A brilliantly disturbing horror film,
06:41 Rosemary's Baby is an exercise in paranoia,
06:44 preying on fears of abandonment and powerlessness.
06:47 It concerns poor Rosemary Woodhouse,
06:49 who is manipulated by her occult neighbors into birthing the Antichrist.
06:53 In one of the movie's many iconic scenes,
06:56 a sedated Rosemary is overpowered by the devil while she experiences bizarre hallucinations.
07:01 It's a masterfully directed and edited sequence,
07:04 and is one of those unsettling scenes that deeply rewards re-watching,
07:08 as it contains many important details,
07:10 symbols and hidden meanings that are easy to miss on initial viewing.
07:30 Norman Bates is an iconic villain,
07:32 and he ends Psycho with what could be the most famous ending in movie history.
07:36 It's certainly up there.
07:38 Sitting in a jail cell,
07:39 Norman's face shifts from innocence to malice as he smiles knowingly at the camera.
07:44 And for a very brief moment,
07:47 the image of a skull is superimposed over his face.
07:50 There are many reasons why people have re-watched this scene.
07:53 It could be to appreciate the beautiful writing of Norma's monologue,
07:57 or the fantastic acting of Anthony Perkins.
08:00 And of course, to catch a glimpse of the skull if they missed it the first time.
08:04 What else is there to say?
08:05 Hitchcock was a master.
08:07 It's hard to craft a great twist,
08:26 but Saw creators Lee Winnell and James Wan pulled off essentially a three-in-one.
08:30 One of the most famous twists of the 2000s,
08:33 Saw ends with Jigsaw rising from the floor and revealing himself to Adam,
08:37 all to the now iconic sounds of Charlie Clouser's "Hello, Zep."
08:41 There are multiple twists packed into these final minutes,
08:44 like, oh, the reveal that Jigsaw is John Kramer and that he was in the room the entire time.
08:49 It's enough to warrant multiple re-watches.
08:52 It's an amazingly cool and well-directed scene.

09:05 Sinking into the floor.
09:06 "Get Out."

09:15 "Why can't I move?"
09:17 Jordan Peele's horror hit "Get Out" has a lot going for it.
09:20 A unique premise, strong performances, and a great visual style.
09:24 An example of the latter was this fan-favorite scene,
09:26 which occurs late in the film's first act,
09:28 when Missy Armitage puts our hero Chris Washington under hypnosis.
09:32 Deep under hypnosis.
09:34 "We do use focal points sometimes to guide someone into a state of heightened suggestibility."
09:41 So deep, in fact, that the film's cinematography gets positively psychedelic
09:45 as it explores Chris's journey into the sunken place.
09:47 "Sink into the floor."
09:49 "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait."
09:50 "Sink."
09:51 "Sink."
09:52 It's one of our first clues that all isn't quite right with the Armitage family,
10:01 since Chris's terrifying fall into darkness seems more than a bit extreme
10:04 for something as comparatively minor as cigarette use.
10:08 You might never feel comfortable around a cup of tea again.
10:10 Number 19.
10:12 Red Face Comes Out of Nowhere.
10:14 "Insidious."
10:15 "I saw something today."
10:19 "I thought it was a little boy. I followed it into Dalton's room,
10:23 but it wasn't a child, it was something else."
10:26 Why do we love being scared?
10:28 We suspect it has a whole lot to do with the adrenaline rush.
10:32 Fans of the Insidious franchise just can't get enough of this scene from the first film,
10:36 in which Joseph Bechara's red-faced demon appears behind Patrick Wilson.
10:39 "I can still hear that voice."
10:47 Sure, it's a cheap scare, and we can't decide whether Bechara looks truly scary
10:50 or more like some sort of demonic Muppet, but we certainly cannot deny its effectiveness.
10:55 Its strength lies in the way it plays on our expectations.
10:57 "There was something in there with him."
11:04 "It was standing there in the corner."
11:11 We expect to see something scary at the end of a dark corridor at night,
11:15 but not in a brightly lit dining room.
11:17 And that's what gives this jump scare enduring appeal.
11:20 The twisted 1981 film Possession may not be a household name,
11:43 but cult horror fans are likely quite familiar with this notably disturbing scene.
11:47 Isabelle Adjani delivers an incredibly physical performance during what can only be described
11:52 as a descent into madness for her character during a horrifying miscarriage.
11:56 The scene of Adjani whirling about and pushing herself to the absolute physical limits may at
12:00 first seem over the top, perhaps even humorous in execution.
12:03 That is, until the character starts to leak and exude fluids from her body.
12:07 As she slumps in the corner of a filthy subway,
12:11 it's clear that the mentally and physically exhausted Anna has forever been changed by the experience.
12:16 It's difficult viewing, but nonetheless mesmerizing.
12:19 Blink and you will miss it.
12:37 Even diehard fans of the Cloverfield franchise can be forgiven for missing this Easter egg,
12:42 which occurs near the end of the film.
12:44 We can see some sort of object fall from the sky during Rob's flashback footage from Coney Island,
12:48 something that lands into the ocean below.
12:50 Fans who followed the film's viral marketing and backstory learned that the object was actually
12:54 a satellite that somehow connected to the destructive events that occur in the film.
12:58 Given how difficult the satellite is to make out, however,
13:01 it's necessary to rewatch the scene carefully in order to catch this tantalizing extra.
13:06 "People are gonna wanna know how it all went down."
13:09 "His name was Jason."
13:14 "I was working the day that it happened, preparing meals."
13:20 It's a delicate tightrope walk when it comes to delivering a good jump scare.
13:24 On the one hand, it's a cheap way of delivering a fright,
13:27 but it can also be an effective storytelling tool.
13:30 This scene most definitely meets the latter definition,
13:32 thanks mainly to how well it was executed by director/producer Shawn S. Cunningham and crew.
13:37 It's the mellow music from Harry Manfredini that elevates the scene.
13:41 Alice is drifting in a boat, mentally exhausted from her fight with Pamela Voorhees.
13:52 Then, with a truly unpredictable lead-in,
13:55 the deformed body of Jason lurches up from the water, pulling her under.
13:59 (screeching)
14:05 It may just be a nightmare, but it's a scene that gets us each and every time.
14:10 "No! No!"
14:12 "I'm in Mother Graham's Valley. It's alright now, Alice."
14:16 "Hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play?"
14:22 "Ahh!"
14:23 It's easy to forget, given how far this franchise has run,
14:27 that the original child's play is actually quite restrained at first with its Chucky effects.
14:31 "I said talk to me, dammit!"
14:32 "Alright, I'm gonna make you talk."
14:36 The doll containing the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray
14:39 is seen moving primarily in shadow and in first person,
14:42 utilizing the old Jaws adage of "less is more."
14:45 That said, when Chucky finally does come alive in Karen Barclay's hands,
14:49 it's not only an effective shock,
14:50 it's also a payoff for all the tension that's been built up beforehand.
14:54 Plus, Chucky voice actor Brad Dorff is just so good at being menacing and threatening,
14:58 even in tiny doll form.
15:00 The world of Japanese horror is known for many things,
15:08 not the least of which is their propensity for truly terrifying visuals.
15:11 Case in point, this supernatural scene from the influential 2002 film "Ju-On! The Grudge,"
15:24 which is something of a J-horror classic.
15:26 Here, a mixture of tension building, first person camera work,
15:32 squishy sound design and dedicated physical acting,
15:35 all come together in a perfect storm.
15:37 In fact, the versions found in both the original "Ju-On! The Grudge"
15:47 and its 2004 American remake are superbly effective even today,
15:51 serving as a perfect jumping off point for those seeking to explore a new world of fright.
15:55 Repulsion may not be your typical hack-and-slash horror fare,
16:09 but this journey into the mind of a disturbed young woman
16:11 takes a startling turn with this otherwise subtle jump scare sequence.
16:15 Catherine Deneuve's Carol is all alone in the flat she shares with her sister,
16:19 or at least she thinks she's alone.
16:21 It's brief, but we can see a mysterious man in a reflection of a mirror,
16:25 who appears when Carol opens her sister's closet.
16:28 The question is, is he really there,
16:35 or is he a product of Carol's increasingly unhinged imagination?
16:38 Now?
16:47 It's one of those unpredictable,
16:49 "no way anyone was expecting that" kind of moments that can only happen in the world of horror.
16:54 The shocking ending of the 1983 slasher classic "Sleepaway Camp"
16:58 revealed that it was the shy and troubled Angela Baker who went on a rampage at Camp Arawak.
17:03 The image of actress Felisa Rose,
17:05 growling with a horrifying expression on her face,
17:08 superimposed upon some very graphic imagery,
17:10 was also something absolutely no one was anticipating back in 1982,
17:15 and truthfully won't see coming today.
17:17 That is, if you don't spoil it for them.
17:19 This jump scare can also be counted among the all-time greats.
17:36 This is due to the timing of the shot,
17:38 and how it's never quite telegraphed to the audience exactly when it's going to occur.
17:42 This underrated sequel to "The Exorcist" is an occult crime procedural,
17:46 following a string of murders that appear to be committed by the long-dead Gemini killer.
17:50 "This is impossible."
17:51 One of these attacks occurs in a hospital,
17:53 as a nurse is checking doors on her floor.
17:56 The scene is shot quietly and at a distance,
17:58 ramping up the tension to a delirious degree.
18:01 Then, without any warning,
18:02 the camera zooms into the Gemini attacking the nurse,
18:05 simultaneously giving viewers a heart attack.
18:08 [Heart attack]
18:13 Number 10, "Freddy Cuts In", a nightmare on Elm Street.
18:16 "Kida."
18:17 [Bleep]
18:19 "And watch this."
18:21 There's no arguing that Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger is one of the all-time horror icons.
18:26 "Please, God."
18:27 "This... is God."
18:31 It's easy to forget, given the character's eventual propensity for wisecracks,
18:34 that Freddy was initially a very menacing and merciless killer.
18:38 As evidenced by this first appearance.
18:40 "Kida."
18:44 "Shit."
18:46 [Laughter]
18:49 Tina's death in the film is played completely straight,
18:52 and the sight of her being tossed around the bedroom by Krueger's hand
18:55 is only made all the more shocking for the gratuitous gore.
18:58 Additionally, fans also re-watched the scene,
19:00 just to see how writer-director Wes Craven and co.
19:03 managed to get the effect of Tina's final moments on the ceiling.
19:06 Back in the glory days of practical effects movie magic.
19:09 Number 9.
19:10 Mind. Blown.
19:12 Scanners.
19:13 "I know that you've all been prepared for this, but I thought I'd just remind you just the same."
19:17 Speaking of practical effects,
19:19 is there any other horror head explosion that's as satisfying or insanely over-the-top
19:23 as this one from David Cronenberg's Scanners?
19:25 Horror fans just loved rewinding this scene when a scanner,
19:28 Cronenberg's word for someone with intense mental abilities,
19:31 is put to the ultimate test by one of his own,
19:34 Daryl Revic.
19:35 The psychokinetic abilities of Michael Ironside's Revic are so strong
19:39 that they cause the other scanner's head to explode,
19:41 in a gratuitously awesome way that we can't show you here.
19:45 "Alright, we're gonna do it the scanner way. I'm gonna suck your brain dry."
19:49 "Everything you are is gonna become me."
19:52 "You're gonna be with me, Cameron, no matter what."
19:55 "After all, brothers should be close, don't you think?"
19:59 The effect was achieved by blasting a shotgun through a dummy's head
20:02 filled with, among other things, old hamburgers,
20:05 resulting in a messy yet surprisingly realistic sequence
20:08 that's just as much fun to watch today.
20:11 "I want you to come with me."
20:12 "I didn't do anything."
20:13 "I said I want you to come with me."
20:15 There have been many effective werewolf transformation scenes over the years,
20:23 from Joe Dante's The Howling to Dog Soldiers and The Company of Wolves.
20:27 There's one that nonetheless trumps them all, however,
20:30 and it's from John Landis' Immortal, an American Werewolf in London.
20:34 Fans not only recoiled at just how visceral and painful
20:44 turning into a werewolf seemed to be for poor David Kessler,
20:47 they also studied the scene frame by frame to see how it was filmed.
20:51 Rick Baker's game-changing effects were the star of the show,
20:58 inspiring the next generation of makeup and visual effects artists.
21:02 Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's The Cabin in the Woods
21:15 was simultaneously a great send-up of and a love letter to classic horror movie tropes.

21:28 As such, the film was chock full of Easter eggs and homages to other characters and franchises.

21:34 One particularly great scene sets up a whole bunch of movie monsters
21:38 for the ultimate murderous mash of carnage.
21:40 Beasts of all shapes and sizes terrorize the underground compound
21:45 which sits below the titular cabin,
21:46 from a merman to a certain, shall we say, pinhead-esque tribute to the Hellraiser series.
21:52 You've really got to watch the scene again and again to catch them all.
21:54 Sure, this scene may have been parodied to death in the immediate aftermath of its release,
22:16 but there's no denying the impact Heather Donoghue's close-up monologue scene had on late 90s horror.
22:21 "I love you, Mom."
22:22 "And Dad."
22:25 Let's face it, not much happens on screen during The Blair Witch Project.
22:29 So when the camera cuts to an uncomfortable and unflattering angle of Heather's face,
22:33 we're caught off guard.
22:34 "I insisted on everything."
22:36 Donoghue's fear is palpable as she delivers her lines in a trembling and tearful voice,
22:41 and it's here where The Blair Witch Project truly grabbed hold of its audience and their imaginations.
22:46 "And it's all because of me that we're here now.
22:48 Hungry, cold, and hunted."
22:55 This scene has sparked decades of debate and review.
23:10 Tobey Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn't really bloody by modern standards,
23:14 but achieves its scares via atmosphere and unbelievable tension.
23:18 And so it's easy to misremember the level of gore present.
23:22 Still, this didn't stop fans from swearing they saw poor Pam impaled by Leatherface.
23:27 This was how powerful Hooper's subliminal terror was upon moviegoers,
23:31 as we never see the hooks emerge through Pam's chest,
23:34 just like we don't actually see what Leatherface does to Kirk after he assaults him with a hammer.
23:43 It's all in our minds, which was probably exactly what Hooper wanted in the first place.
23:47 There's no denying that the death of Charlie early on in Hereditary
24:01 comes as a complete shock to the audience.
24:03 However, the reasoning behind our next entry isn't necessarily due to the scene's troubling violence,
24:08 but rather a small, minute detail that you can only see upon further viewings.
24:13 The occult symbol of King Paimon is actually emblazoned upon the telephone pole that decapitates Charlie,
24:18 leading the viewer to believe that all of the film's events have been preordained,
24:22 leading up to Peter's demonic coronation.
24:24 It's quick and only really noticeable if you pause the frame,
24:35 but it adds yet another layer of depth to one of 2018's most frightening films.
24:40 Number 3 - Here's Johnny, The Shining
24:43 Okay, sure, Stephen King himself may have disliked what cinema maverick Stanley Kubrick did
24:49 with his big-screen adaptation of The Shining,
24:51 but there's no denying this scene's place in the pantheon of horror cinema.
24:55 Jack Nicholson is in full unhinged mode at this point in the film,
24:59 with his character Jack Torrance having seemingly lost all grip on reality.
25:03 "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in!"
25:09 The image of Nicholson bursting through a bathroom door as he stalks his wife Wendy
25:15 became the stuff of which nightmares were made,
25:18 rewatched and quoted endlessly by legions of horror fans around the world.

25:24 Number 2 - Chestburster, Alien
25:28 "You should know you know what it's made of!"
25:29 "I know that! I don't wanna talk about what it's made of, I'm eating this!"
25:35 Never have practical movie effects been so effective, or so gross.
25:40 The infamous chestburster scene from Ridley Scott's Alien
25:43 caught everyone by surprise when it first hit screens back in 1979.
25:46 "Hey, what's going on?"
25:47 "Ahh!"
25:48 One might think that time would have lessened the scene's impact by now,
25:57 but horror fans to this day are inspired by the level of skill and artistry it took
26:01 to bring the xenomorphs to life in Scott's film.
26:03 The effect of this embryonic alien as it bursts through Kane's chest cavity
26:07 is as savage as it is strangely satisfying,
26:10 like the memory of our first time being scared at the movies.
26:13 It's a scene that never gets old, even decades since its debut.
