Join REED on location with the Hinged Pipe Cutter as we demo a 6 inch steel drain pipe.

REED Hinged Cutters™ cut steel, stainless steel, cast and ductile iron with only 90° to 110° handle swing. Its four cutter wheel design requires only 4 inches of clearance around the pipe to make the cut. Aptly named, this cutter opens with a hinge to place cutter around the pipe. Then, close the cutter, tighten and cut.

This REED invention has strong guide fingers to ensure perfect wheel alignment for square cuts. A closed 360° frame on the hinged cutter forces all energy into cutting the pipe for maximum efficiency. There is no shower of sparks in this cold cut. REED has the only hinged pipe cutter that tracks every time and the only one recommended for ductile iron, steel, and stainless steel to Schedule 100.

00:00Hey everybody, this is Chris, your dependable host for all things reed, and today we're
00:10here with Ross.
00:11And Ross, what are we doing here?
00:14We're going to demo a six inch roof drain pipe.
00:16We're going to use a hinge pipe cutter with the proper wheels on it for the steel.
00:23This one here is set up for the steel.
00:26This is used for a schedule 40 pipe, which is a normal wall thickness of a pipe.
00:32Now they do have these for doing the schedule 80 and schedule 100 wall thickness.
00:38This is a good tool because it doesn't require anything other than muscle power.
00:44It's not a tool that would make a spark or anything.
00:47You know, you can control what it does in the environment, and you also can use it out
00:53in the field where you, you know, this would be the tool you would want to take out there.
00:57Well, let's wrap this up and go to work.
01:00Let's get her done.
01:01Okay, we're going to unhinge this tool like I got here, wrap it around here, tighten it
01:07up and then start the sequences of cutting it.
01:11You make your first initial cut to mark it.
01:18You got to go both ways on it with one turn.
01:21The first time, there might be paint or something on the pipe, so it might be irregular, so
01:26that's why you do a light touch-up to it.
01:31If it feels hard, you could go a couple times like that before you twist it.
01:36Don't go a whole lot.
01:37You don't have to force the handle because it doesn't do nothing but put too much pressure
01:41on the cutters.
01:42There's four wheels on this cutter, so it's cutting a quarter of a section of the pipe
01:50at a time, so it kind of overlaps, so that's how you get all the way around the pipe.
01:56As you get close to the end of your cut, you'll feel less resistance on the, on the turn and
02:02on the movement of the tool, and you got to start being careful that your section of stuff
02:09you're cutting off, demoing, doesn't fall down on you.
02:14These are the fingers, and the guides are top and bottom that support it to the pipe,
02:20so it shouldn't fall over, but Murphy's Law, you always want to be safe and be ready.
02:27It is a tool that one man can do, but it's a lot easier when you have two people doing
02:32it.
02:33That way you can push and pull.
02:37We are through.
02:50Well, that didn't really take long at all.
02:53I mean, how did you feel it went?
02:55It went okay.
02:56Like I say, the only resistance you have is the scale buildup, so I guess that's a little
03:01better than buying a membership.
03:02Why membership?
03:03I was going to say, does it work your arms and your shoulders?
03:06Yeah.
03:07Want to do another one?
03:08Let's do it.
03:12Got the wheels touched up again.
03:14Remember, when you're setting the tool up, like right here we have piping, you don't
03:19want to have it where we're going to interfere with not being able to get the full cut.
03:26What is your personal favorite part about the tool?
03:30You just grab this tool and go to work.
03:32You don't have to have a whole big toolbox full of stuff to complete the task.
03:41So there you have it.
03:42There's a look at the Reed Hinged Cutter.
