00:00The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will continue to implement programs
00:05to help increase the production of fisheries in the country.
00:09This is after the data on fishing is decreasing,
00:13particularly in the West Philippine Sea.
00:15Clayzel Pardilla has a report.
00:20The sinking of a Chinese warship
00:23into two ships of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
00:26during maritime patrols in the West Philippine Sea
00:30and the launch of a laser in the agency's airplane
00:33during the Domain Awareness flight last week
00:37are just a few of the incidents of chaos
00:41and invasion of China in the West Philippine Sea.
00:44According to BFAR,
00:46geopolitical tensions have already affected the production of fish in the West Philippine Sea.
00:51According to the Philippine Statistics Authority,
00:54101,000 metric tons of fish were caught in the West Philippine Sea
00:59in the first six months of 2024,
01:02almost 7,000 metric tons less
01:05compared to 108,392 metric tons in the past year at the same time.
01:11Geopolitical situation,
01:13which we can say that's one of the reasons.
01:17There are also other reasons like the increase of fuel,
01:21and the ill-union that happened and affected the migration pattern of the fish.
01:29We don't intend to actually ignore this fact that the contribution of the West Philippine Sea
01:44to the overall production of our national production declined significantly.
01:48So we are taking that seriously.
01:51BFAR will look at the presence of Philippine seabed.
01:56A 50-meter steel multi-mission offshore vessel
02:00and a multi-purpose refrigerated cargo vessel
02:04worth Php 1.5 million will be purchased by BFAR.
02:08More than Php 665 million worth of boats
02:13and other fishing equipment
02:15will be under the Bids and Procurement of BFAR
02:19to be distributed to the Philippine Seabed Program.
02:23This will increase the capacity of fishermen in the West Philippine Sea.
02:28The government has exhausted all the necessary efforts to actually address the issue.
02:38We will not stop implementing programs that will be more helpful for our fishermen
02:44as far as improving our capacity in terms of monitoring, control, and surveillance.
02:50Aside from that, our other floating assets have multi-mission ports.
02:56We also want to use them for lifeboat development.
03:00Despite the situation in the West Philippine Sea,
03:04BFAR will ensure that
03:06the supply here in Metro Manila is sufficient
03:11and that it is not affected by the price.
03:15Taking into account that our country has a lot of fisheries,
03:20not just the marine sources of our fish,
03:26but also from aquaculture.
03:29In the last quarter of the year,
03:32the implementation of the Closed Fishing Season
03:35in Davao Gulf, Palawan, and other places in the country
03:39was expected to improve the number of fish.
03:42Although the local supply will be reduced,
03:46the arrival of imported fish approved by BFAR is expected.
03:52Kalei Zalpardillia for Pambansang TV in the new Philippines.
