00:00So, um, I was just talking about Pete Rose, Gabe, and, uh, I said to Carver High in the
00:08break over the years, we've talked about Pete Rose a million times on our shows.
00:14And I just thought he was so good.
00:16I hated him.
00:17Like, uh, as a pirate fan growing up, all I ever saw was this guy terrorizing the pirates
00:24with the reds or the Phillies.
00:25Uh, every time I turned around, he was on base.
00:29Uh, the way he hustled, the way he played at the speed he played at, and how he was
00:33always on, on base, the way he was always scoring, uh, the way he, uh, did everything,
00:40the way he hit, the way he played in the field, uh, he, he was so good.
00:44I hated him.
00:46That's how good he was.
00:47He's so good.
00:48You hate him.
00:49And, uh, there is like, you know, I put him top five, clearly, uh, baseball players in
00:54my lifetime that I saw on an everyday basis.
00:57He has to be top five all time.
00:59And the other guy that people hate is bonds.
01:01Like, uh, Barry bonds to me was the best hitter I ever saw on a fastball turn on a baseball.
01:08So two guys that people hate, they both, uh, are vilified by people and bonds isn't in.
01:14And I think they have to put Pete Rose in as a player.
01:17I don't care what he did as a manager.
01:19Yeah.
01:20You get into the, the person, I think it's more than just the manager, uh, Scott, cause
01:25I'm not going to sit here.
01:26I'm not going to die on the Hill defending Pete Rose as, as a great person.
01:31Right.
01:32Let's just be real.
01:33And, you know, when they investigated the, the betting stuff, they found a lot of stuff.
01:39All right.
01:40On a lot of different people that never really fully came to light specifically umpires,
01:45to be honest with you, like Pete Rose was not the only person involved in major league
01:50baseball that was betting, but they also, there was also a lot of other stuff.
01:56So it's a complicated legacy, but I mean, you can't disagree Scott from a player's perspective.
02:02And we're not here.
02:03You can't start judging people's personalities.
02:05It's not about the personalities.
02:07It's not about the things that they did off the field, but it sort of has become that
02:12right before it was just point blank.
02:14It was like, yeah, listen, Ty Cobb was a jerk.
02:16He was a, he was a racist.
02:18He was a horrible person, but you know what?
02:22He was a great player.
02:23Right.
02:24You can sort of separate it.
02:26Look at Curt Schilling right now.
02:28You can't tell me to Curt Schilling is not a hall of famer, bro.
02:31Curt Schilling is a hall of fame pitcher.
02:33Right.
02:34Does he say stupid things?
02:35Yes.
02:36Is he a jerk?
02:37Yes.
02:38Yes.
02:39Yes.
02:40Yes.
02:41Does it erase?
02:42Does it erase all the wins?
02:43Doesn't erase the world series championships.
02:45And so there's a difference here, but you're right Scott from a competitive standpoint,
02:51there's you know, only a few people have it.
02:53You know what I'm saying?
02:54Brady has that Scott.
02:55I'm thinking who else was, you know, sort of had it.
02:57Mario Lemieux had it.
02:58You know what I mean?
02:59That's sort of, I'm not going to lose.
03:02I want to win every game that I play in and I'll do whatever it takes.
03:06Like that's sort of, it's that next tier.
03:09It's almost like a soldier that you can't, you know what I mean?
03:12Like a super soldier.
03:14You can't like imagine if some of modern players had that sort of like that Pete Rose win at
03:20whatever cost in his, in his DNA.
03:23I mean, look, he ran over Ray Fossey in the all-star game.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Right.
03:28He ended the guy's career to win an all-star game.
03:30Yeah.
03:31And you know, there's a, all you need to know about Pete guys to a couple of things too.
03:35I've met him a bunch of times.
03:37I've gotten drunk with, with Dibble before, okay.
03:41And Dibble's a cool dude.
03:42Dibble played for him.
03:44Dibble was on the team when Pete Rose was betting and all that.
03:48And Dibble told me point blank.
03:50He goes, you think for a second, Pete would ever bet against the Reds.
03:54He said he was super aggressive.
03:56He wanted to win.
03:57He bet on them.
03:58He never bet against us.
03:59We wouldn't, you know what I mean?
04:00So he never bet against the Reds, you know, so he didn't compromise the game.
04:05It's not good.
04:06If you're the manager and you're betting on the game, does it affect your decisions that
04:08you're making in the game and all that type of stuff.
04:12But just from, from a competitive standpoint, you're not going to find anyone like them.
04:16And as you talked about growing up and I was growing up in the, in the National League
04:20East as well.
04:21And it was the Phillies and the Pirates, although the Pirates were more likable, Scott, you
04:25know what I mean?
04:26With We Are Family and Pops and Dave Parker was one of my favorite players, the Cobra
04:30growing up.
04:31I hated the effing Phillies, bro.
