00:00Right.
00:01Well, what did you think when you're this guy that you, uh, admired and looked up to
00:09like, you know, I did as a, his prowess on the baseball field was undeniable.
00:15And he was such a great, uh, player and he was such a rock literally rock star.
00:21He was enormous in baseball.
00:23What did you think when it started coming out that he had the problem?
00:29Well, when, when we did how to hit better than everybody, I was spent the week in Cincinnati
00:35with him and I came in one day and, and I'm waiting for him and he comes in and he says,
00:44look at this.
00:45It goes like this.
00:47And what it is, it's about a hundred racetrack horse tickets.
00:52I said, Hey, what's that?
00:55He says, well, today my partner and I are betting the pick six and what you have to
01:01pick the winners of the first six races at whatever racetrack was in Cincinnati.
01:07And he said to me, and I know the trainers and three of the trainers told me that their
01:12horse was going to win in those three races.
01:15And so I bought the tickets of every other horse in the other three races.
01:20I mean, literally there must've been a hundred tickets.
01:23It was, it was acid Pete.
01:25What did you pay for this?
01:26He says, well, we spent a hundred thousand dollars.
01:32I mean, a hundred thousand dollars back in the, in, you know, 1980, whatever it was.
01:38I mean, that's a hell of a lot of money.
01:41Yeah.
01:42So this was something that, that Pete was willing to do.
01:46And the next day he came in and I said, well, how'd you do?
01:51He said, we won.
01:52How much did you win?
01:55Well, we won 50 grand, you know, that's, those are the bets he was willing to take.
02:02So I knew when he got in trouble, the reason he was doing what he was doing was because
02:09he must've owed some of the wrong people a lot of money.
02:14Otherwise, I can't imagine that he would have done what he did.
02:19What did you think of how it got worse from there?
02:24I mean, you knew he, you knew that he had a gambling problem, but then what did you
02:29think of the ensuing downfall of his life?
02:33Like it really became a shambles the last 20 years of his life.
02:37I mean, at least he couldn't, he couldn't get out of it.
02:43This was something he just, he, he, he was lucky.
02:47They didn't break his legs.
02:49I mean, he was, he was in a position where I guess he didn't have much choice would be
02:54my, my, you know, analysis of what was going on.
02:58Um, this is what happens to gambling addicts.
03:01Gambling addicts are like sex addicts and they're like, uh, drug addicts.
03:06Um, things do not end up well for these people.
03:09They just don't.
03:10And they didn't repeat.
