00:00It's no secret the Chinese, with all their military might, hardware and weaponry, have
00:05put fear in the hearts of the fisherfolk who cast their nets in the disputed waters of
00:10Ayungan and Scarborough Shoals for a living and are being eternally harassed and bullied
00:15day in and day out.
00:17A drop of 7,000 metric tons in the first half of this year's catch than in the previous
00:22year tells it all.
00:25Our Claisel Cordelia gets us up to speed on developments.
00:30The tailing of a Chinese missile ship to two vessels from the Bureau of Fisheries and
00:34Aquatic Resources while conducting a maritime patrol in the West Philippine Sea.
00:40The laser targeting of the agency's airplane during a bomb-in awareness fight last week.
00:46These are just a few of the many incidents of illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive
00:50actions by China in the West Philippine Sea.
00:54According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, geopolitical tensions have
00:58impacted fish production in the West Philippine Sea.
01:01Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority show that fish catches in the West Philippine
01:06Sea fell to 101,000 metric tons in the first half of 2024.
01:12This represents a drop of almost 7,000 metric tons compared to 108,392 metric tons during
01:18the same period last year.
01:21Geopolitical situation, which we can say that's one of the reasons.
01:27There are other reasons like the increase in fuel, and the airline that passed by, which
01:35affected the migration pattern of fish.
01:39We don't intend to actually ignore this fact that the contribution of the West Philippine
01:53Sea to the overall production of our national production declined.
01:58So we are taking this seriously.
02:01The B-4 will strengthen its presence in the West Philippine Sea with a planned acquisition
02:07of a 50-meter steel multi-mission offshore vessel and an additional multi-purpose refrigerated
02:13cargo vessel valued at P1.5 billion.
02:17In addition, more than P665 million worth of boats and other fishing equipment is currently
02:24under the beads and procurement process of the B-4, which will eventually be distributed
02:29for the Layag West Philippine Sea program.
02:32This aims to enhance the capacity of fishermen in the West Philippine Sea.
02:36The government has exhausted all the necessary efforts to actually address the issue.
02:46We will not stop implementing programs that will help our fishermen, as far as improving
02:55our capacity in terms of monitoring, control and surveillance.
02:59Despite the situation, the B-4 assures
03:30that the fishing season is expected in Davao Gulf, Palawan, and other areas in the country
03:44to facilitate fish stock reproduction.
03:47While this may temporarily reduce the local supply of fish, the arrival of imported fish
03:52approved by B-4 is anticipated to fill in the gap.
03:56Ge-le-zel-por-de-la for the new and better Philippines!
