00:00Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United is always regarded as one of the great fixtures in the English Premier League
00:06and their meeting at White Hart Lane in September 2001 will be remembered as one of the all-time greats.
00:11Glenn Hoddle was in his first full season as Spurs manager and had the firepower to unsettle United.
00:17Teddy Sheringham captained them against his old team.
00:20Les Ferdinand joined him up front with Gus Poyette operating behind the front too.
00:24Sir Alex Ferguson was scheduled to retire at the end of the season but was only interested in the present.
00:29Lauren Blanc partnered Ronnie Johnson in the centre of defence.
00:32Even without Roy Keane, United's line-up was as usual packed with quality.
00:37Sit back and enjoy this one. Commentary from Martin Tyler.
00:41Jeff Winter gets it going here at White Hart Lane. Tottenham of course in the white shirts.
00:48Manchester United in the FA Barclaycard Premiership away from home have drawn at Blackburn and Aston Villa.
00:55They had that roller coaster ride at Newcastle which ended in a 4-3 defeat.
01:02And here's Poyette straight away.
01:05And Sheringham.
01:07Neither Poyette who had stopped his run or Ferdinand who was moving in the opposite direction were quite on Teddy's wavelength there.
01:18Here's Ziga.
01:20And Veron saw that coming and immediately switching midfield defending to counter-attacking.
01:27Van Nistelrooy, Beckham waiting on the right. Veron trying to get it out there but the ball wasn't an ideal one to his left foot or from his left foot.
01:38But Cole will get it again.
01:42Van Nistelrooy.
01:43Van Nistelrooy.
01:46Well, there's obviously a deflection on the shot and it had Sullivan as scrambling.
01:57But Veron.
01:59Van Nistelrooy.
02:01Nicky Butt from long range and my goodness it swerved and Neil Sullivan
02:07was just hoping and perhaps in the end expecting that it would go wide.
02:14Look at the curve on that.
02:22Ferdinand off the chest.
02:25Off the arm of Butt.
02:28Who then has rolled the ball away behind him and not for that but for the way he reacted to the decision.
02:35Nicky Butt is going to get booked.
02:37Couldn't knock the ball very far but it was certainly an attempt to delay the free kick.
02:45And that's why Jeff Winter having booked the offender allows Tottenham an extra 10 yards forward.
02:54Relatively new law.
02:57Accurately applied.
03:00Seager takes.
03:02So that extra 10 yards changed the angle.
03:06Made it more daunting to defend.
03:10The free kick.
03:12And.
03:14Spurs step by step.
03:17Moving closer to the Manchester United goal with a corner.
03:22And.
03:23Spurs step by step.
03:26Moving closer to the Manchester United goal with a corner.
03:33And they've scored.
03:35From the corner.
03:37And it's a debut goal for Dean Richards.
03:47What a marvellous moment for him.
03:49And not so good for Nicky Butt who started it all by conceding that free kick.
03:54Then conceding some territory.
03:56Irwin conceded the corner which Seager took.
04:01Richards rounded it off.
04:06Ferdinand.
04:08Back to Tirico again.
04:11Now Ferdinand on the move through the middle.
04:14Anderton on the ball.
04:15Quite got the runner from the right angle yet.
04:18Tottenham.
04:20Barthez's kick.
04:22Was not safety first.
04:24He kept it in play.
04:28Not really a safety first character is he?
04:32Tirico.
04:34Ferdinand.
04:36Sheringham can't get there.
04:38A bit of a swing at it and connected more.
04:41With Jonsson.
04:42Jonsson up again.
04:45Seager.
04:49Tirico.
04:52Just hooked it away as he slipped.
04:54Seager.
04:55Poiet.
04:56Not picked up.
04:57Ferdinand.
04:58There's no flag this time.
04:59It's a goal.
05:00Les Ferdinand has drilled it in.
05:022-0 Tottenham.
05:03Two inside the opening 25 minutes.
05:06No marking on Poiet.
05:10Pass beautifully timed.
05:11And the movement.
05:13From Ferdinand.
05:14And he fired it in.
05:19Sir Alex Ferguson.
05:21Steady in the midfield.
05:23Ferdinand.
05:25Ferdinand.
05:27Ferdinand.
05:29Ferdinand.
05:30Ferdinand.
05:31Ferdinand.
05:32Steady in.
05:35Grim determination.
05:37Tirico's pass.
05:39Also full of craft.
05:40Poiet.
05:41Sheringham.
05:44Blanc-Blanc behind him.
05:45Sweeping Spurs play.
05:50And they looked in difficulties in their own penalty area.
05:53Seager with the corner.
06:03Anderton.
06:13Well applause echoing around White Hart Loan.
06:17They are supporters here.
06:19Who believe in their right to have their say.
06:21And why not?
06:23Haven't always been happy times at White Hart Loan.
06:27Since the start of the Premiership.
06:30They have loved the opening third of this one.
06:32But it is only the opening third.
06:36Poiet.
06:39Beckham trying his luck on the left.
06:44Fedon.
06:49Tottenham forcing errors.
07:00Johnson.
07:02Perry getting in front of Cole.
07:05But.
07:06Veron.
07:07Space for Gary Neville.
07:09On the right.
07:10Seager got sucked in a little bit.
07:13Moved across to try and prevent Manchester United's progress.
07:17And that happens through a mis-kick by Veron.
07:20Anderton.
07:22Anderton.
07:24Anderton.
07:26Anderton.
07:27Anderton.
07:29Ferdinand against Bloch.
07:30Ferdinand with already the boost.
07:33Of being a scorer here for Spurs.
07:36Scherringer.
07:37Nutmeg.
07:39Veron.
07:41He wasn't having any of that.
07:43Van Nistelrooy.
07:45Veron.
07:48Cole.
07:49Taking it very well on the move.
07:51Can he find an angle for a shot?
07:52But.
07:56Richards across to.
07:58Help out Perry.
07:59And he gave.
08:00His new.
08:02Ally a pat on the back.
08:04Perry was beaten.
08:05Richards wasn't.
08:08Torrico.
08:12Spurs happy to keep it short here.
08:14And Anderton.
08:16For Scherringer.
08:17Torrico backing him up.
08:19Ferdinand.
08:20Ferdinand.
08:22Vartes wasn't sure whether to stay or go for it.
08:28But Ferdinand was in the end.
08:30They set it up very well Spurs.
08:33Ferdinand.
08:34Had some company.
08:36It was Gary Neville.
08:37Solskjaer's on.
08:41A couple of years ago it seemed he might sign for Spurs.
08:45Cole.
08:49Irwin.
09:01This is.
09:02Gary Neville.
09:03Andy Cole going in.
09:04But very well watched by.
09:06Chris Perry.
09:07Didn't.
09:09Have to play the ball.
09:10But had to make sure.
09:12Stood his ground.
09:13Promising service from Gary Neville there.
09:17For the frontman.
09:26Fed on.
09:32Angling it to.
09:33Cole.
09:34Solskjaer taking over.
09:36They're on.
09:37Van Nistelrooy.
09:38Well if I need to pull.
09:40Sharing them available again.
09:43Freud.
09:44That's a.
09:45Little overconfident.
09:47Hesitation by Manchester United and.
09:49Not from Ziga.
09:51Poyet.
09:52Could there be a third in this first half for Tottenham Hotspur.
10:01Poyet knew he had a runner to the right.
10:03He used the Freud as a decoy.
10:05Poyet.
10:06Had the site set on.
10:08Cole.
10:17Came up behind.
10:18Van Nistelrooy.
10:19In goes Irwin.
10:20Beaten to it by Poyet.
10:21Well he wasn't in the end.
10:22Irwin didn't give it up.
10:24Anderton.
10:25Sharing him.
10:26Cushing it.
10:27For Freud.
10:28Tottenham supporting him.
10:29Poyet.
10:30That's a.
10:31Little overconfident.
10:32Hesitation by Manchester United and.
10:34Not from Ziga.
10:35Poyet.
10:36Tottenham supporters are loving this.
10:38They.
10:39Want him to receive it from his fellow forward.
10:41Silvestre.
10:42Making good ground down the left.
10:44Veron supporting Scholes in the centre.
10:53Oh and that's.
10:55Another header one in the penalty area.
10:56But not another.
10:57Goal conceded.
10:59By Tottenham.
11:02Beckham picking out Solskjaer.
11:07And there's still time to win this particular race.
11:11But if they do it.
11:13Goodness me what a recovery it will be.
11:16Beckham.
11:19Van Nistelrooy.
11:20Neville seeing so much of the ball.
11:23But.
11:24Very annoyed with himself.
11:25He didn't get it past the first man who was Richards.
11:28Block.
11:30Another corner.
11:38Certainly looks as though.
11:40Richards got the last turn.
11:41And.
11:42He's.
11:43He's.
11:44He's.
11:45He's.
11:46He's.
11:47He's.
11:48He's.
11:49He's.
11:50He's.
11:51He's.
11:52He's.
11:53He's.
11:54He's.
11:55He's.
11:56Richards got the last touch.
12:00Blanc.
12:01They've got another one back.
12:043-2.
12:06And we've only had 12 minutes of the second half.
12:15No change.
12:16Of expression from the manager.
12:19But.
12:21Whatever half time words.
12:22However heated they were.
12:23They've been heated.
12:25Laurent Blanc.
12:27Wherever he's played.
12:28He's been a goal scoring defender.
12:31That's a tremendous reaction.
12:32He won't think that.
12:33Glenn Hoddle.
12:34But.
12:35Manchester United.
12:37Addressing.
12:39What would have been an impossible task.
12:41For most teams in the premiership.
12:43To come back from a 3-0 down.
12:46Tottenham do need their.
12:49Experienced players to.
12:51Try and rebuild the platform again.
12:54Sylvester.
13:03And Manchester United.
13:04A corner.
13:08Tottenham not really reacting to it.
13:09This is Scholes.
13:10Poets.
13:11Sticks out of foot.
13:12Suddenly looking laboured and weary.
13:15Johnson.
13:16Hoping there was.
13:17Some backup behind.
13:18There was.
13:19Eventually from Gary Neville.
13:20Van Nistelrooy.
13:21So adept at.
13:22Turning in the penalty area.
13:23And.
13:24A little lesson for.
13:25Ledley King.
13:26It was only a little lesson.
13:27At the end.
13:28Because the.
13:29Shot didn't draw.
13:30Manchester United level.
13:31But it.
13:32Could easily have done so.
13:34The.
13:35Silent minority.
13:36Of the first period.
13:38Are now.
13:39Making themselves heard.
13:51Block.
13:58Neville.
14:02Scholes.
14:11Van Nistelrooy.
14:12Cole.
14:13It's a bit of a lunge by Perry.
14:14Beckham is quickly on the scene.
14:16Trying to make an angle for his left foot.
14:17There was a deflection on the shot.
14:18It's a corner.
14:20Andy Cole.
14:21Showing.
14:22Magnificent strength.
14:23And balance.
14:24On the challenge.
14:25To allow.
14:26Beckham to.
14:27Move back onto the ball.
14:29Oh.
14:30Johnson.
14:35Well.
14:36Tottenham.
14:37Have been let off the hook here.
14:38Having.
14:39Conceded two goals.
14:40To headers.
14:41Already in this second half.
14:42Ronnie.
14:43Johnson.
14:44Should have made it three.
14:45Boyett.
14:46Picked off.
14:47By the head of.
14:48Ronnie.
14:49Johnson.
14:50Sylvester.
14:51Brought.
14:52Some.
14:53Youthful exuberance.
14:54To the left hand side.
14:55Cole.
14:56Here's.
14:57Sylvester.
14:58Well.
14:59Forward again.
15:00Oh.
15:01Van Nistelrooy.
15:02Oh.
15:03Van Nistelrooy.
15:04Oh.
15:05Van Nistelrooy.
15:06Oh.
15:07Van Nistelrooy.
15:08Oh.
15:09Van Nistelrooy.
15:10Oh.
15:11Van Nistelrooy.
15:12Oh.
15:13Van Nistelrooy.
15:14Oh.
15:15Gandhi.
15:16This is it.
15:17Manchester.
15:18United Have turned things around at white art lane.
15:21Quite.
15:22Magnificently.
15:23Certainties at half time it seemed.
15:26To leave here.
15:27Empty-handed.
15:28Now.
15:29It is.
15:30Tottenham.
15:31Three.
15:32United.
15:33Three.
15:34All the goals headed past Neil Sullivan.
15:36And it's.
15:37Rude.
15:38Van Nistelrooy.
15:40Who scores the sixth goal.
15:42but to adventure to say unlikely to be the last goal of this extraordinary game
15:48Manchester United moving in for the kill
15:56a 36,000 capacity crowd have had a switchback ride of emotions here the
16:04Spurs celebrations at halftime premature
16:13Richards, Sheringham, Poyett what Manchester United will be keen to avoid
16:22is having made the sort of recovery an even better recovery than the one at
16:26Newcastle they don't capitulate right at the end of the game I think Sir Alex
16:33Ferguson will be at loss for words if that was to happen here
16:42Silvestre, it's the low route this time, VARON! Hats off to Manchester United
17:05the simple facts say it all and he can smile now from 3-0 down to 4-3 in front
17:16the happiest of half hours in the second half for the team from Old Trafford
17:26Tottenham simply have collapsed at the pinnacle of their game in the first
17:34half and cast aside in the second by Manchester United
17:44glum is the word for Glenn
17:52Ziga, Blanc, Ziga, Jonsson opting not to use the goalkeeper Beckham in the right
18:03back roll, Van Nistelrooy has got beyond Richards he's got Solskjaer with him
18:10he's got Cole with him he gives the chance to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back to
18:14Van Nistelrooy
18:22stayed in for Beckham
18:27Solskjaer
18:31I say it stayed in for Beckham I must say
18:37that was the verdict of the assistant but it was almost after you Claude here
18:43between Ole Gunnar and Rude
18:52Ziga will be representing the other half of that equation in the group of course
18:59for Germany Solskjaer passed to Rico Beckham with time to take a touch a time
19:08to take aim and if you give him that type of time the outcome is inevitable
19:15as now is the result of the match the side that were 3-0 down are going to
19:22take three points away from White Hart Lane
19:2986 minutes and 28 seconds
19:34quite astonishing contrast in the two halves here going home our fans who
19:44thought they'd be staying here to give their team a standing ovation at the end
19:49and certainly did so at halftime and they deserved it
19:55if ever anybody talks to you about that old football cliche the game of two
20:01halves you can refer to the events at White Hart Lane of Saturday the 29th of
20:10September the year 2001
20:17Veron
20:24well marvelous for Manchester United a game that will live long in the memory
20:31even on the catalogue of classics between Tottenham and Manchester United
20:35Teddy Sheringham goes off head bowed but Manchester United stay out to celebrate
20:42with their band of fans and my goodness they deserve these scenes of celebration
20:48they do give the opposition a chance these days their defending is maybe not
20:53as it has been in the past but what a wealth of attacking talent they have and
20:58those riches provided a remarkable result Tottenham three Manchester United
21:05five almost certainly the greatest comeback in the history of the English
21:10Premier League United could no longer dominate English football as they had
21:14done for the last three title-winning years but this was a reminder to
21:18everyone that they were still a potent force it was especially harsh for Glenn
21:22Hoddle and Spurs but United never knew when they were beaten and it was days
21:27like this that helped persuade Sir Alex not to retire at the end of the season
21:31after all
