00:00Ipswich town had enjoyed an excellent return to English football's top division
00:05and sat in 6th place when they hosted Tottenham Hotspur in late December 2000.
00:10Spurs were having a mixed time of it in 11th
00:13but they had beaten Ipswich 3-1 at White Hart Lane earlier in the season.
00:18The Ipswich manager George Burley had won many plaudits for his team's performances
00:23despite having to rely on one of the smallest squads in the premiership.
00:27One of their heroes was striker Marcus Stewart.
00:30He was the club's leading scorer with 11 goals so far.
00:34Stewart grabbed the equaliser that had seen the Tractor Boys draw 2-2 with Chelsea last time out.
00:40There was one change to that side.
00:42Former Spur Jamie Clapham was replaced by winger Martin Royser in a very attack-minded side.
00:51Tottenham manager George Graham was under mounting pressure.
00:54A 2-0 defeat against Southampton at the Delle a few days earlier had done nothing to ease the situation.
00:59He handed a first start to 20-year-old Irish utility man Gary Doherty who played up front.
01:05There was also a place in the team for Dutch striker Willem Corsten who partnered Doherty in attack.
01:10It meant that Spurs record £11m signing Sergei Rebrov was dropped to the bench along with Chris Armstrong.
01:17Stefan Everson and Les Ferdinand were out injured.
01:21Your match commentator on a sunny winter's day in Suffolk is Alan Parry.
01:51Titus Bramble, big strong central defender will make his presence felt.
02:19Armstrong back on now.
02:25Holland.
02:26And this is Venus, very experienced player.
02:31Holland goes on to the return ball.
02:33Danger here for Tottenham.
02:35Oh, well it was a scrambled effort in the end.
02:38But they all count and Marcus Stewart racks up his 12th goal of the season.
02:44When it really looked as though Ipswich were going to make a mess of a gifted opportunity.
02:50Tottenham's defence, flat-footed.
02:53Matt Holland with a beautifully clipped cross.
02:56It was a mishit, it was definitely a mishit by Stewart.
02:59He'll be honest enough to say that at later I'm sure.
03:03But he won't care.
03:05Because with eight minutes gone, that goal gives Ipswich Town the lead.
03:13Bramble on to Wilnis.
03:17Right takes over.
03:19What a good ball for Scowcroft.
03:22Two in the box again for Ipswich.
03:24And the quality of the crossing from right and left is causing Spurs real problems.
03:32James Scowcroft who can play in a variety of positions going wide right this time.
03:43Bramble and Scowcroft on the near post here.
03:46Holland and Stewart on the far.
03:48And the ball straight into Sullivan's hands.
03:53Ipswich have suffered only two home defeats this season.
03:56Against Derby, I mentioned that earlier, and Aston Villa.
04:13Fifth in the Premiership, or we're at start of play.
04:16With only half a dozen defeats.
04:19Ten victories and four draws.
04:2134 points.
04:31Holland on to the loose ball.
04:34Brilliantly controlled then by Armstrong.
04:36Back on now.
04:38A wonderful save by Sullivan because I think like most of us,
04:42he must have been expecting Roosa to cross rather than shoot in that situation.
04:48Didn't really look on for a shot.
04:50And I thought he was going to try and pick out someone on the far post.
04:53If Sullivan thought the same thing, he did very well to react so quickly.
05:03Ipswich have been much the better team.
05:05Ipswich have been much the better team so far.
05:12The only surprise perhaps is that they haven't been able to build on their early lead.
05:24Roosa went in hard and that was hard enough to win it back.
05:28And the Dutchman takes over again.
05:31Fell well to defend and he's lost him.
05:33What a great run but he's still going.
05:36What a goal that would have been.
05:39Fantastic run by Martin Roosa who was not going to accept the word defeat here.
05:44He just kept going on and on.
05:47Three, four defenders.
05:49Got a little bit of luck with the deflection.
05:56His corner was good.
05:58Anderton was there to clear but he's given it away.
06:04Bramble goes in hard.
06:06Stewart's there to pick up the loose ball.
06:08Tottenham all at sea.
06:10Willness.
06:12In the end, Anderton won it back.
06:16And Doherty caught in possession by Bramble.
06:19You can see why they're so excited about his prospects.
06:34Clements.
06:38Well they keep doing that, giving the ball away cheaply.
06:45Now what can they do that has been given back to them?
06:49Perry.
06:52It's a useful ball.
06:54Leonardson.
06:56Claim for handball from the home fans I ought to add.
06:58Here's Thelwell.
06:59Anderton.
07:03Thelwell's cross.
07:05Magnificent defending again by Bramble.
07:07What a player this boy is.
07:10King.
07:12Anderton.
07:14Offside.
07:17Tim Sherwood waves an admonishing finger at the linesman
07:20but it's the waving flag that counts.
07:24Willness.
07:28Turned on by Armstrong.
07:31Away by Clements.
07:32Only as far as James Scowcroft.
07:36Lipswitch get the throw and they can keep some pressure
07:39on the Tottenham goal laid on in the half.
07:42Lipswitch get the throw and they can keep some pressure
07:45on the Tottenham goal laid on in the half.
07:56Willness again.
08:00Wright makes the cross.
08:01Oh beautifully taken down.
08:03Wow what a goal that could have been for Scowcroft.
08:06The skill in controlling what was a difficult ball
08:09was absolutely outstanding here.
08:11Look at that.
08:12One touch.
08:13Set himself up with the second
08:15but couldn't hit the target.
08:19Managed four goals this season.
08:21James Scowcroft he got 15 last season
08:23but in fairness he's often been a sub this season
08:26rather than in the starting line-up.
08:35Foul on Armstrong by Clements
08:37who seemed to hurt himself in the process
08:39just limping away
08:41as the free kick is played quickly.
08:45Still danger for Sullivan here.
08:49Roosa the furthest forward for Lipswitch.
08:54Well Tottenham's attack has looked ineffective.
08:57Their defence shaky
09:00and with the exception of Anderton
09:02their midfield pretty non-existent as well.
09:04That all adds up to a worrying picture for Spurs.
09:07Their only consolation
09:09is that it's still just 1-0.
09:23Just a few seconds of the half remaining now.
09:27And that is the whistle.
09:29Anything could happen in the second half
09:31but the halftime scoreline
09:33is Ipswich Town 1
09:35Tottenham Hotspur 0.
09:40Well there hasn't been any detectable change
09:42in the pattern of this game.
09:51I mentioned earlier
09:54I mentioned the fact that Ipswich will go third
09:56by winning or even drawing today
09:59and they will be having pretty lofty ambitions
10:02for the second half of the season
10:04and that's pretty remarkable when you think
10:06that the winners of the playoffs
10:07have gone straight back down again
10:09in 6 out of the 8 seasons
10:11since the Premiership was formed.
10:13Very little possibility of that fate befalling
10:16Ipswich Town
10:17who would have to take
10:18a catastrophic downturn in their fortunes.
10:24Here's Scowcroft
10:26Holland
10:27and Willness
10:29they're in the mood
10:30to get that second goal
10:31and this could be it!
10:33Well Perry did so well then
10:35to block Armstrong
10:37and deny him what would have been his third goal
10:39as an Ipswich Town player.
10:48Clearance by Willness
10:51Campbell heads it away
11:00George Graham evidently still
11:02reasonably satisfied with the way things are going
11:05he hasn't made any changes
11:07Campbell commits a foul here on Scowcroft
11:20There's a lot of aerial power in there
11:22Bramble
11:23Armstrong
11:34Martin Rusak will take the kick
11:36right into that crowd of players
11:39Well Stewart it was
11:40one of the smaller of the
11:42targets
11:43who won the header
11:44Very good header it was too
11:50Venus with a lovely ball
11:52Holland
11:53this is an excellent move by Ipswich
11:55if anything comes of this
11:57it will be worth looking at again
11:59in its entirety
12:01Scowcroft
12:04Well the final shot was disappointing
12:10Doherty
12:12Doherty
12:13held it up well
12:19Clemens tries to spread the play
12:23and a time
12:31and he's worked tirelessly
12:33in the Tottenham cause today Darren Anton
12:35but
12:38those around him
12:39haven't functioned quite so well
12:42and here he is again
12:45lovely turn by Doherty
12:48well he did well to get a shot in
12:49and as I recall
12:51that's the first shot on target
12:53by any Tottenham player today
12:55and we've had 11 minutes of the second half
12:58and that tells its own story
13:01Scowcroft
13:12Whistle
13:23It's a foul
13:42Well I said that
13:44it was Tottenham's first shot on target
13:46their own fans have just picked that up
13:48and with the
13:49sort of gallows humour that you often get
13:51in their situation
13:52we've had a shot on their target
13:54is the chant from the away fans
13:57there could be another shot on their target here
13:59oh what a wonderful effort by Bramble
14:01against the crossbar
14:03Sullivan may have tipped it there
14:05but my word that was as close
14:08as Bramble will get
14:09to a spectacular goal
14:12brilliant effort
14:13by the teenage central defender
14:18wonderful save by Sullivan
14:22he nearly had to make another then from
14:24yet another wicked corner
14:27from that left hand side by Venus
14:34well they might well have unearthed
14:36one of the biggest stars they've ever had
14:38in Titus Bramble
14:52oh lovely move again
14:55Rousset
14:56did well
14:59Holland's cross, brilliant
15:00what a finish
15:01Armstrong
15:02the man
15:03to round off
15:04another splendid Ipswich move
15:07and now they have got their two goal cushion
15:1116 minutes gone in the second half
15:14Ipswich increased their lead
15:15and deservedly so
15:17and almost inevitably
15:19the goal came as a result of some slick interpassing
15:22and equally inevitably
15:24the final delivery came from that left hand side
15:27where they've wreaked so much damage
15:29Stewart who got the first goal
15:31turned provider this time
15:33and it was an easy tap home
15:35for Alan Armstrong
15:36who is proving a big hit with our home fans
15:55Clemens has to dive into the snow to retrieve the ball
15:58just to remind us that although the pitch looks beautiful and green
16:01and the sunshine makes it look almost summery
16:04it's far from that
16:05it's freezing
16:10Causton's long range shot
16:13Van der Tanu turned it goalwards
16:15but it was never going to trouble Richard Wright
16:28and Ipswich burst into life again
16:31and get a free kick
16:36there's just 15 minutes to go
16:38and Ipswich are comfortably in control here
16:42they lead 2-0
16:57well it was a wild shot by Willness
17:00that was going miles off target
17:01until it deflected
17:02kindly this time for Tottenham
17:04Anderton with the long ball
17:05looking for Willem Causton
17:06who seemed to be using his arms
17:09and that's how the referee saw it as well
17:10he's had a disappointing match
17:12the Dutchman
17:16Bramble
17:18just dropped the shoulder there
17:19and lost a few players along the way
17:21and still going
17:23well played Holland
17:25yet again it's that left hand side for Ipswich
17:29Roosa with the cross
17:30and there's a chance here
17:32against the crossbar
17:34when it really looked as though Scowcroft
17:36would have found it easier to score
17:39not like him
17:40normally a better finisher than that
17:45well I've probably been a bit harsh
17:46saying that really
17:47because when you look at it from that angle
17:49there was no routine finish by any means
18:03Scowcroft
18:08Armstrong
18:12and now right
18:14this is Willness
18:25they've played some excellent football
18:28and they're going to be
18:30they've played some excellent football
18:32just given away at the end there by Stewart
18:37Anderton
18:39did well
18:40Causton
18:42take on Mark Venus
18:43and he's got pace to beat him
18:44good save by Richard Wright
18:48well you've got to compliment the Ipswich keeper there
18:50who's been inactive for long long periods in this game
18:54but kept on his toes
18:55kept sharp
18:57and that was a good save
18:58and in fairness to Causton
18:59who's only probably had one other glimmer
19:01of a goal scoring opportunity
19:03he hit that well
19:05a Tottenham goal now might change things
19:07right at the end
19:08as Clemens delivers it to the near post
19:10headed away by Hridesen
19:13Campbell
19:15no offside
19:16as Ipswich hesitated
19:18Richard Wright didn't
19:30come on
19:38off goes Marcus Stewart
19:41and it looks like the man who's going to replace him
19:44is the defender and former Tottenham Hotspur player
19:48Jamie Clapham
19:49he only made one appearance in the first team
19:51in his time at Spurs
19:54but he'll be grateful for the opportunity
19:56to face them again here
19:57albeit very briefly
19:59five minutes plus stoppages
20:05Stewart might have just been carrying a little injury
20:07but as I said before
20:08I'm sure that's
20:09as much to do with
20:11preserving his stamina
20:12for the contests ahead
20:14as anything else
20:18very useful long range effort
20:19from Herman Hridesen
20:21who's only got one goal so far
20:23for Ipswich
20:24but has been close
20:25to adding to that total today
20:27more than once
20:30Holland still battling
20:32so is Scowcroft
20:33Johnson's in there as well now
20:35Spurs come out with the ball
20:36Ledley King
20:37and Leonardson
20:38and then turn forward to Rebroff
20:42and that's disappointing
20:47and his confidence
20:49seemingly
20:50shattered at the moment
20:51Rebroff
21:00did brilliantly there
21:01Scowcroft
21:02still got it
21:04and it's onside
21:06everyone hesitating from Tottenham
21:08they could pay for that
21:09David Johnson's there
21:10he's missed it
21:11now does he claim the goal
21:13and indeed was he in an offside position
21:15two interesting questions
21:17the only answer that matters
21:19is that the goal stands
21:20Jamie Clapham claims it
21:22Johnson was right on the line
21:24and almost seemed to apply a touch
21:26in which case he might have been offside
21:28and indeed
21:29that could have been offside
21:31when the ball was first played
21:32down the right hand side
21:34to Martin Rusa
21:35let's have another look here
21:39well you've got to wonder
21:40whether that goal should have been allowed to stand
21:43you really have
21:44I think it had crossed the line
21:46in actual fact when
21:48David Johnson applied his touch
21:50just but only just
21:55well it has now
21:56been as emphatic
21:58as the scoreline suggests
21:59I guess you could say
22:08Scowcroft
22:11sets it up for Rusa
22:12who's been threatening a goal today
22:19certainly
22:20played a big part in the third goal
22:22with that run down the right flank
22:24whether or not he was offside
22:25when he received it
22:26is another matter
22:27and whether the goal should have been ruled out
22:29because Johnson was in an offside position
22:32again is another matter
22:34there'll be two minutes added
22:36and the whistle can't come soon enough
22:38for Tottenham Hotspur
22:49Lipswitch get a free kick
22:52and I think we can say with certainty now
22:54that all three points
22:55is going to take them
22:57to 37 points
22:59from 21 league games
23:01and move them
23:02albeit
23:03it might be temporarily
23:05in view of the rest of the
23:07fixtures coming up later this afternoon
23:09but it will move them up to third place
23:11in the Premiership table
23:13what a satisfying sight
23:14that's going to be
23:16for Lipswitch Town fans
23:17just
23:18back in the Premiership
23:20after so many near misses
23:22trying to get out of the Nationwide First Division
23:24they find themselves right up there
23:26with Manchester United
23:28and Arsenal
23:33is there to be a consolation goal
23:35for Tottenham
23:36not from this attack
23:41I'm not sure it would be any consolation
23:53cheers from the home fans now
23:55every time one of their players
23:57gets a touch on the ball
24:04certainly in festive mood now
24:06the Lipswitch supporters
24:10and in a few seconds time
24:12they'll be able to cheer the final whistle
24:14and another three points
24:16but George Graham
24:18will have to go back to the drawing board
24:20once again
24:21what a bad week for Spurs
24:23having lost 2-0 at Southampton on Wednesday
24:26things have got even worse here today
24:38Clapham
24:39who got the third goal
24:43and that third goal
24:45was enough to clinch
24:47a thoroughly deserved victory
24:49for Ipswich Town
24:51the final score
24:52Ipswich Town 3
24:54Tottenham Hotspur 0
24:56Ipswich moved up to 4th
24:58on the back of that victory
24:59the season was a tremendous success
25:01for the club
25:02who eventually finished in 5th place
25:04guaranteeing a UEFA Cup spot
25:06Suffolk hadn't had it so good
25:08since the early 80s
25:10Tottenham finished a disappointing 12th
25:12on 49 points
25:14the club's real failing was their
25:15dreadful away form
25:16they managed just two league wins
25:18on the road
25:19and lost 13 times
25:21not good enough
25:22and George Graham
25:23paid for that
25:24with his job
25:25three months later
