00:00Liverpool in early February 2002 and were hoping to make it five league wins in a row
00:06Liverpool knew that a win would see them go top of the Premiership
00:09All of this without their manager Gerard Houllier, who was recovering from heart surgery
00:14Striker Marcus Bent had helped Ipswich's climb up the table
00:17He'd scored six goals since signing from Blackburn
00:21Unsurprisingly, there were no changes from the Ipswich starting XI
00:24that had won away at Everton in their previous match
00:27That meant the club's leading scorer for the past two seasons, Marcus Stewart
00:31had to make do with a place on the bench
00:35For Liverpool, there was a first start at right-back for Abel Xavier
00:39following his move from neighbours Everton
00:42Xavier replaced Jamie Carragher, who'd begun a four-game suspension
00:46Steven Wright switched to left-back
00:48and that was the only change acting boss Phil Thompson made from the side
00:51which had beaten Leeds United previously
00:58Liverpool kick off
01:01There is Steven Wright at left-back looking for Heskey
01:04He in turn looks for Michael Owen and it's Jermaine Wright
01:07who gets it back to Andy Marshall
01:12Headed by Ancho
01:14Mark Venus has a look before trying to release
01:19the young player from Argentina, Sixto Peralta
01:23It was first that knowledge of English football
01:26as a boy back in South America
01:28was of the exploits of Liverpool Football Club
01:33He gets a view of them at very close quarters today
01:38Heskey
01:40Space infield for Owen, but not there
01:42It was played behind him
01:43Matt Holland saw the danger
01:46Here's Ryderson
01:56Just a slight change in tactical emphasis for George Burley
02:02A case of reverting to a back four
02:05They did go in with the same eleven players at Everton
02:09A back three, but
02:12It's not a massive difference
02:15but for those of you who like to follow the team patterns
02:24Here's Chris Makin
02:40Venus
02:42Aggression by Herpiot
02:46That was felt by Peralta
02:48who was appealing for a free kick
02:49He wasn't going to get it
02:50Here's Murphy
02:51Heskey
02:53Gerrard, who's certainly back in top form in recent games
02:57Murphy
02:58Looks to chip the goalkeeper
03:00And it very nearly came off for Danny Murphy
03:05Andy Marshall
03:07Andy Marshall
03:11Was reaching up
03:12and in the end just touching it aside
03:28Make it
03:30No from Bent
03:32Armstrong
03:33And it's Clapper making the run
03:35It was Matt Holland who tried to supply the ball through
03:38It could easily have been those two players the other way round
03:40but
03:41they're showing quite a lot of variety when they are getting on the ball in
03:44midfield
03:45Ipswich
03:46has not
03:47been
03:49incessant attacking from the home side
03:51and
03:52indeed Marshall has been the busier goalkeeper
03:55Just been the odd flutter of promise
03:58from the boys in the blue shirts
04:08Murphy had rather gone underneath that
04:11Another chance here
04:13Owen setting off
04:15trying to get behind McGreal
04:17Very nearly came off
04:19for Liverpool
04:20Sammy Herpiot's pass
04:23Michael Owen in hot pursuit
04:28Peralta
04:29Clapper
04:31Not picked up
04:32and getting within range on his left foot
04:34until the
04:36danger was recognised by Herpiot
04:38really threw himself into the line of
04:40Clapper's effort
04:41Counter attack
04:42led by Risa
04:43Heskey
04:44and that's another save
04:46and we're still inside the opening 15 minutes
04:48for Andy Marshall
04:51Liverpool again
04:53looking the more likely side to
04:55get the first goal here
04:57and if they do get in front
04:59they are hard to
05:01take back
05:08Heskey
05:10Owen
05:12Goalkeeper got a touch
05:13There was no one really following in for
05:15Liverpool then
05:16and had they done so
05:17Michael Owen would have presented them
05:19with a
05:20a gilt-edged chance
05:21He did the right thing
05:22Looked for a second as though the chance would be his
05:24but it wasn't from that angle
05:25Anyone who'd
05:26read Owen's thoughts there
05:27could have tapped Liverpool into the loop
05:31Out comes Marshall
05:33Half a hand to it
05:35Xavier
05:37Well the ball's
05:38run on through
05:40The goal
05:41has been coming
05:43It was a
05:44deflected shot
05:46but it's a happy start
05:49for the
05:50signing from Everton
05:51Abel Xavier
05:56Touched
05:57Chris Makin
05:59Marshall didn't claim it originally
06:01Then the first ricochet was fortunate
06:03to reach Xavier
06:08Hit and hope really
06:11and the Marshall really with the
06:14too many players in front of him
06:16masking his view
06:17and one of those Chris Makin
06:18deflected it into the net
06:19and this is where
06:21Liverpool are
06:23so hard to break down
06:24when
06:26they do
06:27get the lead
06:29very organised defensively
06:32A challenge here by Marcus Bent
06:33and
06:34he got in front of Stephen Wright
06:35who was a bit annoyed with himself
06:36There wasn't too much pace on the header
06:39Good movement by
06:40Bent
06:42Probably needed
06:43a bit of
06:44a bit of a
06:45bit of a
06:46bit of a
06:48probably needed more
06:50pace on the ball coming in
06:53not to add too much to it
06:56and the header like that
07:00Wright
07:01goes Armstrong
07:02and he's made some space
07:03It was an intelligent run
07:04well fouled
07:08Jermaine Wright
07:09Peralta
07:14Fine stop by Dudek
07:17and the ball went behind him
07:20but not on into the goal
07:21as Peralta would have hoped
07:43Brought out by Owen
07:45It was just too far
07:46Very nearly put Murphy
07:47straight in at goal
07:49It was just a
07:51over hit
07:52Still found Murphy
07:53and he in turn
07:54finds Gerrard
07:57Venus back
07:58where Ipswich need him
08:03Armstrong
08:07Make it
08:10by the chest of Anshar
08:17Gerrard
08:19Oh Heskey
08:20using the pace on the pass
08:21and plenty of power in the shot to
08:24add so much more confidence forward
08:46Murphy
08:48Xavier
08:53That's a Gerrard's pass
08:54for Heskey
08:57Tried to leave his body movement
08:58too late
08:59not to
09:01telegraph it too much
09:02that he was going to have the spin and shot
09:17Steven Wright
09:19Gerrard
09:22Murphy
09:29Armstrong
09:31couldn't react to the roar of the crowd
09:32that told him that
09:34there was a player coming
09:35from behind him
09:47He has got a
09:48very impressive long throw
09:50Yonan Arisa
09:52The Norwegian who settles
09:53so quickly into
09:55life in English football
09:57and a very important player
09:58for Liverpool this season
10:00Stewart
10:01for Holland
10:04Backed up by
10:05Jamie Clapper
10:10directed at Stewart
10:11as he wanted
10:12Oh and Heskey
10:13is behind Maker
10:14Emil Heskey
10:15close to half time
10:17has doubled the lead
10:18for Liverpool
10:24Well his
10:25renaissance
10:26continues
10:29and you can say the same for
10:32Liverpool Football Club as well
10:33after their
10:35mid-winter splutters and
10:38shortage of victories
10:40but
10:41already two up here
10:42in the first half
10:44now that they are back
10:45to winning ways
10:46looking to extend it
10:48at the expense of
10:49it switched out
10:52Stewart
10:57into corner
11:02Heskey comes back
11:03to help defend it
11:13in from
11:15Peralta
11:16very well met by
11:17Herpia
11:18Holland sets the sights
11:21Dudek had a player
11:22on each post
11:23to assist him
11:24if required
11:25none of the three of them
11:26back on that
11:27Liverpool line
11:28were needed
11:43Tottenham Hotspur
11:441-0 Liverpool
11:48Liverpool
11:49Liverpool
11:50Liverpool
11:51Liverpool
11:52Liverpool
11:53Liverpool
11:54Liverpool
11:55Liverpool
11:56Liverpool
11:57Liverpool
11:58Liverpool
12:01Touched by Armstrong
12:02and
12:03Stewart almost made
12:04something of
12:05very little
12:08and that's saved by
12:09Dudek from
12:10Peralta
12:11An important moment in this first half, Ipswich with plenty to do,
12:15they trail Liverpool by two goals to nil.
12:28On with the game, Steven Gerrard certainly an influence in this game
12:32as he has been back in top form for Liverpool recently.
12:36After a bit of a dip following some reaction it's been suggested to all the Ballyhoo
12:43after playing such a big part in England beating Germany, as Owen did of course.
12:50And Michael Owen, oh the goalkeeper hesitated in the end, he's saved from Owen's shot
12:55from the angle, back with Resa, Owen's back in contention again, here he is.
13:00This is Resa, in the end he got so close to Marshall they almost collided.
13:18You talk about the third goal of the game being important and certainly Liverpool still look as
13:24though they're more than capable of getting it for themselves and should they do so the
13:31points would surely be in the bag. This was Owen and Resa a few seconds later.
13:42Well there is the goal and it's Sammy Herpias thumping head up, certainly capable of getting it.
13:49It was but a reprieve for Ibswich and it zipped past the player on the post,
14:01Peralta, and flew via his boot into the roof of the net.
14:20Here's Murphy, Resa's waiting on the left if they can go that way but Armstrong spotted it.
14:27Pollock, strong use of the body by Marcus Buckley, had the ball under control.
14:35Brydersen, now can they shape something here Ibswich to give them a glimmer of hope
14:42in the last quarter of the game.
14:50Harman went spiralling to the ground, he's complaining though that he didn't get a free kick,
14:57he got up to help win the ball back for Liverpool and here they come again with Resa. Gerrard goes
15:02outside him, Resa who packs a real wallop with his left foot, it's Gerrard, here's Michael Owen,
15:09it's 4-0 to Liverpool and Michael Owen adds Ibswich Town to his long list of clubs
15:18that he has personally put to the sword.
15:23But this is vintage Liverpool on the break, it was all about the timing of the passes
15:32and in the end they got that absolutely right and there was no surprise that the
15:37finish was spot on again because it came from a certain Michael Owen.
15:47It's Murphy cropping up on the left, Owen, pesky and
15:59I'm sure I mistimed that, he knew it.
16:19Clapper, here's Peralta, Brydersen,
16:30Xavier gets it away, he's claiming he was bumped in the back by McGreal,
16:38Resa, they have a run against Maked,
16:51Murphy,
16:55Gerrard,
16:59Liverpool totally in control at Portman Road,
17:03Harman, Owen, got the fourth of the four by which they lead.
17:12Two in the first half, two so far in the second for the team wearing the Liverpool
17:18red with their great pride here in Suffolk this afternoon. Heskey, Resa coming in at the back post,
17:29Xavier,
17:33Harman,
17:36Owen, now Heskey, almost like a training exercise this.
17:44Gerrard, trying to get the the deep cross I'm sure towards Resa,
17:49they don't really connect, that's Moncho, it's about as far forward as you'll ever see him really,
17:54you have to be 4-0 up for him to do that.
18:00Murphy, Xavier, who scored the first for Liverpool today on his debut, remember.
18:09Owen, Michael Owen gets past McGreal, it's five.
18:14My goodness, this is quite a romp for Liverpool.
18:21No wonder they're all wreathed in smiles, it's all too easy, George Burley-Wilfield.
18:29No real challenge from Ipswich.
18:46Murphy, now Anelka, Murphy's darted on into the centre, Owen arriving there as well.
18:53Anelka looking to express himself, almost to the feet of Owen.
19:02Good spot by Harman, Venus's attempted pass out.
19:07Still don't over-commit Liverpool, you usually see five or six players behind the ball,
19:24but they've got such outstanding individuals like this, Owen to Anelka,
19:31and his chance of getting a premiership goal for Liverpool thwarted by Andy Marshall.
19:38Well, it's a scoreline that shines brightly from Liverpool's point of view, but
19:45the Ipswich staff here, as soon as they can throw the switch and get those lights off
19:51and contend this to history, the better really. They'll just be hoping
19:57around Portman Road that it doesn't get any worse, easily could.
20:02Heskey, headed by Haradas, I don't know if he got a foot to it. Harman, Anelka,
20:24and Callister, something to the tempo which is fairly leisurely at this stage with this score.
20:32Back to Harman, into the feet of Owen, laid off beautifully for
20:39Callister, and got in behind Ipswich again.
20:42It's wonderful for the goal difference here,
21:02which could yet be a determining factor at the end of the season.
21:06Wonderful from Liverpool's point of view of course, it's made a big dent in Ipswich's.
21:13I think, oh, hope he is free! And Marshall stops it being six.
21:22He's played well.
21:29Clapham.
21:31Liverpool anthem echoing around Portman Road, you'll never walk alone.
21:49Magilton, former Liverpool junior himself, he knows the words.
21:54Not the least inclined to join in.
22:06Peralta, bent. Magilton, make it. On to Holland.
22:16Peralta.
22:19Well, it would have been a glorious goal if a very academic, as far as the scoreline was
22:23concerned, and it was left in the end to Tim Magilton, who did start his career with Liverpool.
22:38We're into the 90th minute and there'll be one minute after that.
22:46Before Ipswich are put out of today's misery.
22:49It hasn't at all reflected the glorious way they've got their season going again.
22:59More in keeping really with their stumbling start, one win in 17 games, but to say it was
23:05just a lapse in Ipswich's form is to not give proper credit to Liverpool.
23:11Holland's cross, it's a good one. Marcus Bent.
23:29Swept away by McAllister. Here's Owen, it's the one last thrust from Liverpool.
23:36Manelka.
23:40Can we find Heskey, he's done that. Heskey! It's six in stoppage time.
23:49And the cake is well and truly iced here with all the trimmings.
23:56Manelka's pass, Heskey's goal.
23:59Six in Suffolk for Liverpool Football Club without reply.
24:09And there's a message to the Uniteds of Manchester and Newcastle.
24:19He's got plenty to be proud of, Phil Thompson, look at the chest being thrust out there.
24:23It's not the biggest chest you'll see in football, it's one of the biggest score lines that you'll see.
24:28A massive away win for Liverpool. Ipswich hit for six at Portman Road today.
24:35Ipswich down nil, Liverpool six. So a comprehensive victory for Liverpool and one that brought Ipswich's
24:43winning run to an alarming halt. It would prove a decisive moment as far as their Premiership
24:49future was concerned too. They managed just one win in their remaining 12 league matches
24:54and were relegated ending the season with a five nil defeat at Anfield. Liverpool went on a strong
25:00run in the league after this victory, they only lost once in their remaining 11 Premiership games.
25:05The Reds finished the season in second place on 80 points,
25:08behind Arsenal but ahead at least of their great rivals Manchester United.
