00:00Railway enthusiasts turned out on Monday morning as the first of a new set of electric locomotives
00:04officially entered service in Taiwan.
00:07The E-500 locomotive set out from northern Jilong City, bound for Pingdong in the country's

00:14The new engines are built by Japan's Toshiba.
00:16They'll operate intercity passenger and freight services and are more powerful than the older
00:21locomotives they are replacing.
00:23They have also been engineered for local conditions to withstand typhoon winds as well as hot
00:27and humid weather.
00:29The locomotives also have a backup system to limit speeds in case the main system fails.
