00:00We are here in British Columbia, Canada, driving the all-new 2025 Can-Am Outlander 1000R and
00:10850.
00:11We're gonna take you around this rig, show you what makes it special, show you what they
00:14changed.
00:15Let's get started.
00:16Now, this feels more like British Columbia, a little bit gray, a little bit overcast.
00:20And today, we've spent the morning riding the Can-Am Outlander 850.
00:24This is the entry-level model, $11,199.
00:29How does it stack up to the big 1000R XTP that we drove yesterday?
00:34Let's walk around and take a look.
00:35I think Can-Am is gonna sell a lot of these rigs.
00:37I think this is gonna be the bulk of the new high-displacement Outlander sales.
00:43And I say that because you don't give up a whole lot when you start with this rig.
00:49Yeah, you got 12-inch wheels, 26-inch tires, which are way smaller than the 14-inch bead
00:53locks that you get on the XTP with its 27-inch tires.
00:57Does that matter?
00:58Mmm, yeah, you feel the difference.
01:00It's easier to roll over big obstacles with the larger tires.
01:03But these things are totally fine.
01:05They work great.
01:06You don't get a front sway bar.
01:07Does that matter?
01:08Only when you're really, really hustling it.
01:11You get Showa shocks instead of the QS3s on the XTP.
01:15Does that matter?
01:16Again, only if you're really, really hustling.
01:18If you were looking for a machine to just do work day in and day out, hard to beat this
01:23thing, especially for the price difference.
01:25We're talking like a $4,500 price difference between this machine and the big XTP.
01:32That's not to say there aren't some drawbacks, starting with the fact that you don't get
01:36things like a winch or those beefy bumpers that you get on the XTP.
01:40We would want both of those.
01:42Those are going to ratchet up your cost just a little bit.
01:44But all the accessories that bolt to the XTP will bolt to this rig.
01:48Speaking of accessories, you can still get the chainsaw holder.
01:51You can still get the gas caddy.
01:53All of that works with the link system here.
01:56You also get these beefy handles.
01:57Those are great.
01:58The controls are pretty much identical.
02:00You don't get the selectable VSCO lock up front.
02:03Again, only if you are really, really, really working this thing does that matter.
02:08You still get the same towing capacity, 1,850 pounds, thanks in part to that big two-inch
02:13receiver back there.
02:14This is a lot of machine for the money, especially when you consider what Can-Am's asking for
02:19the big XTP.
02:20Is it down on power?
02:21Well, in this configuration, this engine, it's the same 999cc V-twin, just detuned with
02:28a different ECU flash.
02:29So you get 82 horsepower and something like 66 pound-feet of torque.
02:32That's down from the 101 horsepower that the big 1000R gets.
02:36Do you feel it?
02:37Yeah, especially on the top end.
02:38If you're trying to pull over 60 miles an hour, you can really feel the difference.
02:42Most people are not going to be riding this rig at those speeds.
02:46This thing is still going to be plenty quick for most riders.
02:50I think this is the buy if you're looking to get into a big Outlander.
02:56Unless your buddies are absolute rippers on the trail, you will have no trouble keeping
03:01up with them if they're on a 1000 and you're on the 850.
03:05The biggest thing is all the improvements that Can-Am made for the 1000 carry over here.
03:10It's crazy quiet.
03:11The suspension is still excellent.
03:13Yeah, you can feel that the shocks are not as nice as the QS3s that are on the 1000.
03:18These are Showa guys, kind of standard run-of-the-mill stuff.
03:21Yeah, you miss the big sway bar up front.
03:23This rides a lot more like what you'd expect from a standard ATV.
03:27Whereas the big 1000, incredibly stable, incredibly planted.
03:31Is that enough to want to pay another $4,500?
03:34I don't know.
03:35I think for most farms, for most job sites, this 850 is more than enough.
03:41So which one would we buy?
03:43I don't know.
03:44I honestly don't.
03:45I love the way the 1000R XTP looks with all those orange accents.
03:49I love the extra body protection.
03:50I love all of those things about that machine.
03:53Honestly though, I think this 850 is the buy.
03:56There's something refreshing about a simple machine, an honest, good working little mule.
04:01Look, we were running this thing around on the same course that we ran yesterday.
04:04It was all rutted, all torn up, and this little billy goat took everything we threw at it.
04:10A lot of people aren't going to be comfortable riding a big displacement class ATV in those
04:15types of conditions anyway.
04:17They'd want something smaller.
04:18So the fact that this machine can hold its own in that sort of terrain is pretty impressive.
04:22All right, let's get back to that 1000.
04:23All right, that starts with an all new frame.
04:26We're talking a high strength steel frame that is 35% lighter than the last generation's
04:34frame.
04:35That's pretty impressive.
04:36And it also allowed Can-Am to use some new trick suspension, including arched A-arms
04:42in the front and these beefy arched A-arms in the rear.
04:47That also helped with suspension design.
04:50The center of gravity is a lot closer to the roll center, which means this thing is more
04:55stable and I can confirm this is a very stable rig.
04:59This is a big machine.
05:00We're talking 1000 pounds of ATV and it doesn't ride like it.
05:05It rides incredibly, incredibly flat.
05:09It's awesome.
05:10It feels smaller than it is.
05:11And of course, the big news is the 101 horsepower, 999 cc parallel twin that sucker's got.
05:20Dual overhead cams.
05:22It is an absolute riot.
05:25But what's most impressive is that it's really, really tractable low in the rev range.
05:29I think this thing makes peak power somewhere around 7700 RPM, somewhere around that.
05:35But below that, it's nice and linear.
05:38This isn't a machine that's going to spook you.
05:40It's got nice, easy power.
05:42You just bleed on the throttle and you don't have to worry about it taking off.
05:46It's a lot smoother than some of the old K&Ms that we're used to.
05:50And I got to say, it makes some competitors feel a little herky jerky.
05:54So K&M got all of that power out of that 1000 by increasing the compression ratio.
06:00I think it's up to like 11.8 to 1.
06:03However, this machine can still run 87 octane.
06:06And when you do, it only hits you with a power penalty of around 3%.
06:11That's pretty good.
06:12Like the 500 and 700, this machine, which is the 1000R, is identical driveline wise
06:17to the 850.
06:18The only difference is an ECU flash.
06:22I say only difference, not exactly.
06:25For one thing, the 1000R gets a much beefier radiator and fans.
06:29It's not like you can just save a little money, buy an 850 and then reflash the thing up to
06:34the horsepower levels that you see on the 1000R.
06:36There are other little bits and pieces that make up that difference.
06:40It's also worth noting that the 1000R gets four wheel disc brakes, while the 850 has
06:46to deal with three.
06:471000R also gets a true locking front differential, while the 850 gets the usual Visco lock, non-selectable.
06:531000R is an absolute ripper.
06:55It makes 11 more horsepower than the Polaris XP 1000, which I'm here to tell you is no
07:01slouch.
07:02Speaking of that monster engine, before we get more into capability, let's talk about
07:07the fact that, like the 500 and 700, this thing is fully enclosed.
07:11NVH is much better noise, vibration, and harshness.
07:15At idle, this thing is incredibly quiet, and even when you're ripping down the trail, you
07:19don't hear a lot of engine clatter.
07:21What you hear is the machine working.
07:23It's good noise.
07:24Can-Am said they spent a lot of time working on making sure riders hear the noises they
07:28want to hear and don't hear the noises they don't want to hear, and man, does it make
07:33a difference.
07:34Back to capability.
07:35Front rack.
07:36You've got storage up here.
07:37You can also haul 130 pounds on this front rack.
07:40You can put 240 pounds on the rear rack.
07:44Tweaks to this machine.
07:45There are rubber bushings throughout the vehicle, which makes it much, much quieter.
07:50Competitors in this segment, and even the outgoing Outlander, were notorious for squeaks
07:55and rattles, and you just don't get that with this machine.
07:58I was ripping through the woods here earlier, and I kept thinking, oh man, they really were
08:02putting us on with all that.
08:03I keep hearing a clunking noise, and then I realized I was hearing the winch.
08:07Ergonomically, this thing is thought out really well.
08:09You have massive tow boxes.
08:12The seat is big and comfy.
08:14The seating position on this XTP is excellent.
08:18You get big, fat aluminum bars that taper down to 7-8ths.
08:22Really reduce vibration.
08:23Can-Am borrowed a lot of tricks from the 500 and 700, and if you remember our review of
08:27that rig, we absolutely loved it.
08:30So, intake for the engine and the CVT is behind the gauge pod, just like in the 500 and 700.
08:36The battery is located behind the engine compartment, but that's not really a big issue, because
08:41you can access charge ports, charging points on top of the seating position, which remove
08:47the seat.
08:48That's excellent.
08:49Serviceability.
08:50You can get to this engine no problem.
08:54It's tool-less to get all the way to check your oil.
08:56It's tool-less to get into your CVT.
08:58Both of those things are excellent.
09:00And I think it's one bolt to get to the oil filter.
09:03Those things are great.
09:04Speaking of your oil filter, let's talk about something truly, truly wild.
09:10Maintenance.
09:11Can-Am says that you will not need to maintain this thing for the first 3,000 kilometers
09:16or around 1,900 miles.
09:19That is ridiculous.
09:20But for most riders, you won't need to service this thing for the first year.
09:24That includes break-in.
09:25It's not like you've got to run this thing for 500 miles, take it back to the dealer,
09:29get it serviced, all the rest of that.
09:31Part of that is because this thing carries a lot of oil.
09:34This big 1,000cc engine carries 2.8 liters of oil.
09:39That's as much as some cars.
09:40All that oil gives you a lot more longevity when it comes to lubricating the engine.
09:44That kind of maintenance interval means that you can save a bunch of money.
09:48Maintenance.
09:49Can-Am says that if you ride 900 miles a year, this rig will save you around 20% compared
09:53to competitors.
09:54We should also take a moment to talk about the transmission.
09:56It is also all new.
09:57It's got a larger secondary pulley, which means it's easier to take off the line, all
10:02the rest of that.
10:03It is crazy easy to shift.
10:04You can shift it with one finger if you need to.
10:09Bonkers.
10:10There's no rocking back and forth.
10:11There's no forcing it into gear like some competitors.
10:14It's a real win for this segment.
10:16We spoke a little bit about the suspension on this rig.
10:19You get greater ground clearance and that redesigned suspension means you get a lot
10:22more wheel travel.
10:23We're talking 10.8 inches up front and 12 inches in the rear.
10:27That's up an inch and a half up front and two inches in the rear.
10:30Despite all that extra wheel travel, Can-Am really worked on the geometry.
10:33There's negative camber built up in the front so that if you're coming off the ground, you
10:38land.
10:39It's a little bit more stable.
10:40If you're coming into a corner, that negative camber straightens up and makes sure that
10:44you have a greater tire contact patch on the ground while you're riding.
10:47And I gotta say, it makes a real difference.
10:50And like the 500 and 700, you can kind of choose your own adventure when it comes to
10:53trim.
10:54It starts with the XT, moves up to the XTP, but then goes on to the Limited and then the
10:59big XMR.
11:00Let's touch on accessories.
11:02There are over 90 accessories that carry over from the previous generation.
11:06The 16 inch link system works great on this machine.
11:09You can use the fuel caddy.
11:10You can use the chainsaw holder.
11:12All of those things come with it.
11:13You can stack coolers on the back of this thing.
11:15You can also outfit it with a Bluetooth stereo that is element resistant.
11:20Let's put it that way.
11:21I mean, you can outfit this rig however you want.
11:23So we've spent a day ripping around on this machine and I think coming in, I was expecting
11:28to ride a rig that felt like an absolute handful.
11:30Oh, those big QS3s just eating it up, bud.
11:34Over 100 horsepower, that's more horsepower than my first car.
11:38But it's not.
11:39It's kind of just a big kitten.
11:40You can really sort of forget what you're on until you get yourself into a little bit
11:45of a dicey situation.
11:46The surprising thing is it sort of soaks those situations up.
11:50There's lots of wheel travel.
11:52It's tough as nails and the brakes are excellent.
11:54They will throw you over the handlebars if you clamp down on them at speed.
11:59Speaking of speed, at one point today, I saw 74 miles an hour on the trail.
12:05This thing is an absolute river.
12:08Woohoo!
12:09Mr. Trim, baby!
12:13If you have to have the biggest and the best and the fastest machine out there, I don't
12:17think you can do any better than this right now.
12:19At least not until Polaris or somebody else catches up.
12:22So how do we sum this up?
12:24Well, it's stiffer.
12:27It's quieter.
12:28It has more power.
12:29There are still a lot of accessories for it.
12:32It's more comfortable to ride, better in every way than the outgoing model, and keeps up
12:36the trim that Can-Am established with the 500 and 700 of really pouring resources into
12:41the ATV segment in a way that a lot of manufacturers just aren't.
12:45And as side-by-sides continue to get more and more expensive, more and more buyers are
12:49looking back at ATVs, and rightly so.
12:52Can't blame them for it.
12:53So how much will the new Outlander cost you?
12:56Well, if you want a 1000R, it starts at $12,499.
13:01The next model up, the XT, starts at $13,649.
13:05This bad boy, the XT-B, is $16,599.
13:08It goes up from there.
13:10You can buy this machine in pretty much whatever configuration you want.
13:15The XMR, the big mud model, is next.
13:17Then the Max models, then the super Gucci limited models, which have a wheelbase that
13:21is eight inches longer than before for a lot more room and a lot more comfort for the family
13:26guys out there.
13:27All right.
